Dies Saturday
RICE, Jan. 13 - David Smith, or Rice, born August 1918 in Englewood, NJ, was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Demarest, NJ Volunteer Fire Department. He was a parish - loner of St. Theresa Catholic Church In Farmville where he volunteered at its food pantry.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jacqueline; his four children, David of Vermont, Deborah Devoursney of Tennessee, Cynthia Goddard of Vermont and Peter of Rice and their spouses and nine grandchildren.
A memorial mass will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Southside SPCA or the Rice Volunteer Fire Department.

MEHERRIN, Jan. 13 - Adolph M. Freitag, 74, of Meherrin, death by his wife, Frances Hughes Freitag.
He is survived by three sons, Kenny Freitag of Blackstone, Steven Freitag of Meherrin and John Freitag of Downingtown, PA; two daughters, Kathy Glover of Remsenburg, Long Island, NY and Laura Kogler of Sinsbury, CT; seven grandchildren, William, Justin and Lauren Glover of Remsenburg, Long Island, NY, Adam and Matthew Freitag of Blackstone and Michael and Meredith Kogler of Sinsbury, CT.
A funeral mass was held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 31 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Meherrin, with cemetery.
Browning Funeral Home, Keysvllle, was in charge of arrangements.
Muriel Horlander, 76

Dies Monday
MEHERRIN, Jan. 13 - Muriel Jones Horlander, 76, of Meherrin, born March 27, 1927 In Meherrin. She was the widow of Frank J. Horlander, Jr.
She is survived by one daughter, Connie Horlander Wood and her husband, Joe; two grandchildren, Joseph Ryan Wood and Cathryn Elizabeth Wood all of Meherrin and one sister, Ruby J. Boaz of Martinsville.
Mrs. Horlander was a retired Postmaster having served 31 years with the Postal Service. She was a member of the National Association of Postmasters, National League of Postmasters and the Retired Postmasters Association. She was a lifetime member of Meherrin Presbyterian Church and served as pianist/organist for many years.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Browning Funeral Home, Keysville, with Cemetery at Sacred Heart Catholic Church In Meherrin. Pastor Shawn Reyburn will officiate.
The family will receive friends this evening (Tuesday) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Meherrin Volunteer Fire and Rescue, the American Heart Association or the Leukemia Foundation.
Robert I. King
NEW CANTON, Jan. 8 - Robert I. King, of New Canton, died Monday, January 5, 2004 at her home.
She was death by her brothers, Harold and Arthur Ritz Kingdon and her sister, Kathryn Frampton.
Mrs. Shields attended State Teacher's College (Longwood) and had been associated with various Women's Clubs, Garden Clubs, Junior League, and hospital volunteer activities in Bluefield and Huntington, WV and Farmville and Virginia Beach. For many years she sang in the choir and assisted with altar duty at Galilee Episcopal Church.
A church service will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in Galilee Episcopal Church by the Rev. Dr. Coleman Tyler.

FOREST, Jan. 8 - Robert Estes Spencer, Jr., 51, of Forest, Born In Lynchburg, June 20, 1952, he was a son of Lucy Ore Spencer Bailey of Farmville and the late Robert Estes Spencer, Sr. He was a 1970 graduate of Brookville High School and James Madison University In 1974.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 26 years, Vicki Deal Spencer; a son, Robert Travis Spencer and his girlfriend, Tara Maiewski of Forest; his maternal grandmother, Mamie Bowling Spencer of Lynchburg: paternal mother and father - in - law, Raymond and Mary Lee Deal of Madison Heights; stepfather, William R. Bailey, Jr. of Farmville; two stepbrothers, William R. Bailey, III and his wife, Melissa of Farmville and Dwayne Alien Bailey and his wife. Dawn of Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
A funeral service, by Dr. Tim N. Madison and the Rev. Steve Tyree. Burial followed in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

GRIMES, Billie Lewis, 66

Died Saturday, January 3, 2004. Funeral services were held 1 p.m. today (Tuesday) at Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, with died Sunday, January 4, 2004 at his home.
Mr. Kerns retired and moved to Prospect in 1976, He was an avid outdoorsman, a master angler and played baseball for the Rockingham County League and was a veteran of the Korean War,
He is survived by three children, William Lee Kerns, Steven Ray Kerns and Karen Steward; a sister, Audrey K. McKeel; three brothers, Wilmer Kerns, Jack Kerns and Dennis Kerns and two grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in Clover Hill United Methodist Church died Saturday, January 3, 2004.
The widow of John W. Dorrier, she was the daughter of the late James H. Forbes and Julia Gilliam Forbes.
She is survived by her sister - in - law, Mrs. J. Branch Forbes of Andersonville; her nieces, Sandra F. Moss of Dillwyn, Susan F. Bomar of Andersonville and Nan F. Bradley of Midlothian; her great - nephew, Billy Moss and great - nieces, Melanie Farrish, Robin Alien and Amy Lawhorne all of Dillwyn. Members of her extended family were Bea and Phil Keaton of Lake Montlcello. Bea was her companion and friend for many years.
Mrs. Dorrier received her formal education at the School for the Deaf at Staunton. She was active in the deaf community and was a member of the Blue Ridge Senior Deaf Group. In later years, she came to regard Brookview as her home and enjoyed her excursions with Mrs. Keaton. During 2003 she received additional care from two very special people, Leigh Ann Brown and Peggy Borum.

He is survived by two sons and daughters - in - law, Frank and Martha Lyles of Mechanicsville and Gene and Elizabeth Lyles of Keysvllle; two daughters and a son - in - law, Rosa and Edward Gittman of Farmville and Judy Ann Lyles of South Hill; six grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and four great - great - grandchildren.
