Ruby Shorter Wiggins
PELHAM, N.C. - Mrs. Ruby Shorter Wiggins of 120 Whippoorwill Lane, Pelham, N.C., went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, October 6, 2002, the day her church, True Gospel Baptist Church, celebrated Homecoming.
Born October 14, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, she was the daughter of Peter Benjamin Shorter and Minnie Gay Webb Shorter.
She lived in Danville prior to moving to Pelham, N.C. in 1974. She attended Brosville High School. She was married to Jesse Richard Wiggins, who predeceased her February 28, 1989.
She is survived by a daughter, Joyce Wray and her husband, Curtis, of Pelham, N.C.; a son, Charles Wiggins and his wife, Lynn, of Columbia, S.C.; a granddaughter, Amy Wray; grandsons, Richard Crowder and wife, Susan, Robert Crowder and wife, Chris, Brian Wray and wife, Lisa, Travis Wiggins and Taylor Wiggins. She had seven great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by five sisters, Lorrain Starr of Billings, Montana, Hattie Reese, Goldie Morris, Beulah Webb and Francis Talley, all of Danville, Va. and four brothers, Robert Shorter of Virginia Beach, Va., Oscar Shorter, Edward Shorter and Paul Shorter, all of Danville, Va.; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home chapel with The Rev. Hubert Inman and The Rev. Mike Kent officiating.
Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence of her daughter, Joyce Wray, 2766 Chandler Mill Road, Pelham, N.C.

Cecelia Allen
PENHOOK, Va. - Cecelia Elizabeth Witcher Allen, 93, of 301 Country Oak Road, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at the residence.
Born Sept. 26, 1908, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Abner and Mary Magdaline May Witcher.
She was married to Hartwell Allen, who predeceased her. She was a member of Sandy Hill Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include five daughters, Lovelace Evangeline Allen Turner of Martinsville, Mae Allen Poindexter of Penhook, Elizabeth Moore of Danville, Brenda Patterson of Wheaton, Md., and Delcie Webb of Hopewell; three sons, Hartwell Allen Jr. of Afton, Tenn., Gene Allen of Mechanicsville, Md., and Cyrus McAuthur Allen of Penhook; two sisters, Nonie Smith of Capitol Heights, Md., and Christine Edwards of Sandy Level; 22 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Evelyn White and Lola Langley; and three brothers, Lovelace Witcher, John Edward Witcher, and William Henderson Witcher.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Miller Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Taylor Tolliver officiating. Interment will follow at Witcher Family cemetery.

Dorothy Blackwell
REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Dorothy Martin Blackwell, 82, formerly of North Woodleigh Circle, died Friday, June 21, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home in Danville.
A native of Danville, she was the daughter of Erie A. and Edna Jones Martin.
She was married to Walter H. "Goat" Blackwell, who predeceased her. She had lived in Reidsville for most of her life and was a member of Reidsville Christian Church. She was a retired employee of the American Tobacco Company.
She was predeceased by four brothers, Wallace Martin, Robert Martin, Erie Martin Jr., and Fred "Kissie" Martin.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Reidlawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Citty Funeral Home in Reidsville.

Pearl Boyette
DANVILLE, Va. - Pearl Berry Simpson Boyette, of 1664 Maple Drive, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at the residence.
Born Sept. 13, 1927, in Harlingen, Texas, she was the daughter of James Mace Berry and Maude Labar Berry.
She was first married to Charles A. Simpson, who predeceased her, and later married Amos M. Boyette, who also predeceased her. She was a 1944 graduate of the Corpus Christie High School in Corpus Christie, Texas. She was a member of the Keen Street Baptist Church and Degree of Pocahontas. She was the Great Pocahontas of Virginia from 1987-1988. She was associated with the Piedmont Hardware Company for 22 years. She later worked at Associated Services Corporation from 1970-1990.
Survivors include one son, James A. Simpson of Danville; one daughter, Loretta S. Nichols of Danville; one sister, Evelyn B. King of Gonzalez, Texas; two grandsons and one granddaughter.
She was predeceased by four sisters and three brothers.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Townes Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Tom Brown and the Rev. Tom Wright officiating.

Irene Henderson
KEELING, Va. - Irene Setliff Henderson, 74, of 8676 Old Richmond Road, died Friday, June 21, 2002, at her residence. She had been in declining health for eight years.
Born Oct. 7, 1927, in Danville, she was the daughter of Robert M. Setliff and Lola Setliff Setliff.
She was married Jan. 25, 1953, to Curtis Howard Henderson, who died Dec. 3, 1990. She had lived all of her life in Danville and had retired from C & P Telephone Co. where she had worked as a secretary for more than 40 years. She was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church and a member of the Pheaben Sunday School Class and a long time member of the Pioneer Club of the telephone company.
She is survived by one daughter, Barbara Henderson Mustain of Keeling; and two grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one brother.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Keen Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Brown and the Rev. Tom Wright officiating. Interment will be at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Bruce Love
DANVILLE, Va. - Edward Bruce Love, 78, of 124 Westhampton Ave. died Friday, June 21, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, where he had been a resident since May.
Born Dec. 28, 1923, in Kenbridge, he was the son of Norman Neblette Love Sr. and Lillian Bell Love.
He was married to Rose Bennett Love, who survives.
He was a graduate of George Washington High School and attended VPI in Blacksburg. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a flight instructor and received a commission of second lieutenant.
He worked on the tobacco markets as a ticket marker in Danville and Whiteville, N.C., and later worked as a real estate broker for Southwood Realty Co. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include three daughters, Gale Scott and Jeannette Napier, both of Danville, and Susan Absher of Dillwyn; one son, Grady Love of Charlotte, N.C.; and seven grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Norman Neblette Love Jr. and Harold Gray Love; and two sisters, Gertrude Love and Virginia Love.
A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Gary Milstead officiating.
The family received friends 7 p.m to 8 p.m. Saturday at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Tim Arnold
DANVILLE, Va. - Timothy "Tim" Leon Arnold, 38, of 120 Wesley Drive, died suddenly Saturday, April 13, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 31, 1963 in Danville, he was a son of Garnett Leon Arnold, who survives, and Patricia Robinette Arnold, who predeceased him.
He was married to Janet Leigh Mustain Arnold, who survives. He lived his entire life in Danville and was employed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in the Banbury department. He attended Riverview Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his father and wife of the residence, include one son, Brandyn Arnold of the residence; one stepmother, Sandra Thomas Arnold of Danville; and one half-brother, Wesley F. Worley of Danville.
He was predeceased, in addition to his mother, by one brother, Duane Kevin Arnold; and four grandparents, Garnett and Mary Martin Arnold and Carolyn and J.B. Robinette.
The memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Michael Stephenson officiating.
The family will receive friends Wednesday following the memorial service and at other times at the residence.

James Calos
DANVILLE, Va. - James Efstratios Calos, 78, of 448 Barkshire Drive, died Friday, April 12, 2002, at the residence, following 10 months of declining health.
Born July 10, 1923, in Danville, he was a son of Steve Gus Calos and Ann Maurakis Calos.
He was married May 31, 1970, to Shirley Anne Weaver, who survives. He was of the Greek Orthodox faith and was a lifelong member of the YMCA and Goodyear Retiree's Club. He lived his entire life in Danville and attended Danville Public Schools. He was retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., where he worked as a supervisor. Prior to working for Goodyear he worked with his father and brother for many years at the Coney Island Cafe. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one daughter, Anna Ruth Calos Fisher of Ringgold; three brothers, Gus E. Calos and Stavros E. Calos, both of Danville, and Pete E. Calos of Hopewell; and one sister, Stella C. Morris of Richmond.
The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with Father Cleon M. Ross and the Rev. Freddy Vicks officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery with military honors performed by the American Legion Post 1097.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and other times will be at the residence.

Bessie Fitzgerald
JAVA, Va. - Bessie McLaughlin Fitzgerald, 87, of Henry Mill Road, died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at the residence.
Born Dec. 10, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of John P. McLaughlin and Carrie Mayo McLaughlin.
She was married to William T. Fitzgerald, who predeceased her. She was a member of Shockoe Baptist Church.
Survivors include five daughters, Margret Dixon-Daniel and Carrie Womack, both of Halifax, Clara Vaden of Chatham, Mable Guy of Java and Carolyn King of Philadelphia; one son, William I. Fitzgerald of Vernon Hill; one sister, Hattie M. Thompson of Ringgold; 35 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Monday at Shockoe Baptist Church with the Rev. Kevin McNeill officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and other times will be at the residence, 1157 Henry Mill Road.

Coy Frith
GRETNA, Va. - Coy Bernard Frith, Sr., age 84, of Gretna, died Saturday, April 13, 2002 at Gretna Health Care Center.
Born, February 2, 1918 in Henry County, he was a son of Jacob Ewell Frith and Sally Ada Nunn Frith. He and Mary Lillian Ramsey Frith were married in August, 1942. Mr. Frith was educated in Henry County and worked in Martinsville in his early years as a meat cutter at Prillaman's Meats and as a laborer at DuPont. He was drafted in the United States Army in May 1941 into the 3459th Ordinance and worked his way up to the rank of Master Sergeant. His Army service included stations in Maryland, California, North and South Carolina. In March, 1944, he was sent over seas and served in North Africa and Italy spending considerable time at Monte Cassino and Anzio Beach. It was at Anzio Beach that he came closest to the front lines and was shaken by the devastation and death he saw there. Upon returning to Virginia after the war, he said, "If I never leave Virginia again, it would be fine with me." After his return, he worked with his father in the livestock trade under the business name, J.E. Frith & Son. After the death of his father in 1948, he carried on that business independently with his son. He operated livestock farms in Henry, Franklin, Patrick, Pittsylvania, Floyd, and Wythe counties and was respected throughout the south central and southwestern Virginia for his knowledge of livestock and served as a mentor to many in the business.
He was active in the Baptist faith and was a charter member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and had also been a member of Oak Level and Fontaine Baptist Churches in Henry County and the First Baptist Church of Gretna. At the time of his death, he was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church. He was a member of numerous civic organizations and served appointments to the Virginia Highway Safety Commission and the Henry and Pittsylvania County Planning Commissions. He was active in the Farm Bureaus of Henry and Pittsylvania counties. He was a lifelong member of the Republican Party and an active contributor.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by a son, Coy B. Frith, Jr. and his wife Betsy of Martinsville; four daughters, Janette Riggan and her husband Wayne of High Point, NC, Laura Susan Hale of Burlington, NC, Marsha Fernandez and her husband, Adolfo of Martinsville, and Kim Umstadter and her husband, Michael of Crozet; six grandchildren, Phillip Riggan, James Thomas Riggan, Megan Washburn, Francisco Fernandez, Alicia Fernandez and Anna Paige Umstadter; two great-grandchildren, Chayce and Avery; two brothers, F. Earl Frith of Floyd and Douglas Kyle Frith of Martinsville and a large extended family. He was predeceased by a brother, James Burness Frith.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2002 at Mill Creek Baptist Church by Rev. James Bullock, Jr., Rev. Charles Swanson and Dick Hensley. Interment will follow at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday at Roselawn Burial Park, Martinsville.
The family will receive friends Monday 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 8245 Climax Road, Gretna.

Garland Glass
LYNCHBURG, Va. - Garland Winford Glass, 75, of Lynchburg, died Saturday, April 13, 2002 at his residence.
Born Jan. 23, 1927 in Halifax County, he was a son of Noel Glass and Ruth Blanks Glass.
He was married to Lois Woodson Glass, who survives. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, having served in WWII, and was retired from General Electrics. He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one son, Eugene Garland Glass of Lynchburg; one daughter, Brenda Glass Brumback of Manassas; one brother, James Henry Glass of Halifax; one sister, Jane McBride of Halifax; and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by three sisters, Rebecca Stanley, Mildred Davis, and Virginia Garber.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Heritage Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Maurice T. McCarthy officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Mildred Hanks
DANVILLE, Va. - Mildred Weatherford Hanks, 83, of 4180 Westover Drive, died Saturday, April 13, 2002, at the residence, following two weeks of declining health.
Born Sept. 30, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Harry Thomas Weatherford and Beulah Dix Weatherford.
She was married June 29, 1938, to Harry Curtis Hanks, who predeceased her. She lived most of her life in Danville and Pittsylvania County and owned and operated Hanks Grocery on Westover Drive for more than 40 years. She was a member of Dan River Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Brantley Reid Hanks of Suffolk; three daughters, Martha H. Cooper of Charlottesville and LaVerne H. Campbell and Nicole H. Garrison, both of Danville; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Dan River Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Kenneth Key officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will be at the residence.
