Thelma Winstead
DANVILLE, Va. - Thelma Miles Winstead, 90, of 1625 Piney Forest Road, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center following two months of declining health and three days in the hospital.
Born June 3, 1912, in Henry County, she was the daughter of Rufus Miles and Lucy Seay Miles.
She was married Sept. 3, 1938, to Keith Lea Winstead, who predeceased her Aug. 15, 2001. She was a member of Grace Design United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Faith Circle and the Fellowship Sunday School Class. She lived her life in Danville. She was retired from Dan River Mills, Inc. where she worked as a Lab Technician.
Survivors include one son, Richard L. Winstead of Fort Smith, Ark.; one daughter, Beth Winstead Gentry of Danville; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Design United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom Shepherd and the Rev. Carolyn Winstead officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and other times will be at the residence of Beth W. Gentry, 132 Northridge Drive in Danville.

Betty Armstrong
DANVILLE, Va. - Betty Jean Lyons Armstrong, 71, of 304 Hickory Forest Road, died June 16, 2002, at Piney Forest Health Care following several years of declining health.
Born January 3, 1931, in Staunton, she was the daughter of the late Achilles Finney (Doc) Lyons and the late Mary Freed Lyons.
She was married on October 28, 1948, to Willard Browning Armstrong, who survives. Mrs. Armstrong had lived most of her life in Danville. She had retired from Fieldcrest Mills in Eden where she had worked in the Maintenance Dept. after several years of service and she had worked at the former S.S. Kresge Five & Dime Store at the Food Counter. Mrs. Armstrong was a member of the Shermont Baptist Church and a member of the Royal Gems Senior Citizens Group.
Survivors include her husband, Willard Browning Armstrong of the residence; her son, Michael Wayne Armstrong and his wife, Judy Armstrong of Danville, Va.; her son, Richard Browning Armstrong and his wife, Barbara Armstrong of Dry Fork, Va.; her brother, Charles Lyons of Chester, Va.; her sister, Ruth L. Myrtle of Staunton, Va.; five grandchildren, Christopher Armstrong, Richie Armstrong, Thomas Armstrong, Jennifer Armstrong, and Jordan Armstrong; and two great-grandchildren, P.J. Armstrong and Ryan Armstrong.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 19th from the graveside in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Reverend Bill Soyars. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times will be at the residence of her son Mike and Judy Armstrong, 1906 Allen Place.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Mount Cross Volunteer Fire and Rescue, 4812 Mount Cross Road, Danville, Virginia 24540.

Robert Davis
LONG ISLAND, Va. - Robert Deshay Davis, 21, of 268 Wyatt Road, died Sunday morning, June 16, 2002, in the Renan community as the result of an automobile accident.
Born March 20, 1981, in Lynchburg, he was the son of Robert and Dorothy Davis, who survive.
He was employed by Dollar General in South Boston and was a member of Miracle Revival Fellowship Holiness Church.
In addition to his parents, survivors include one daughter, Shaqur Graves of Gretna; two brothers, Antonia Lamont Davis of the residence, and Wayne Davis of the U.S. Navy stationed in Hawaii; and three sisters, Pearline Glass, Paulette Davis and Pamela Davis, all of Long Island.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Miracle Revival Fellowship Holiness Church with Bishop Milton Waller officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The viewing will be held from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home in Gretna.

Martha Dickerson
CHATHAM, Va. - Martha Viccellio Dickerson died Sunday, June 16, 2002 at her home in Chatham, Virginia, in the same house she was born 89 years ago on December 13, 1912. She was the daughter of the late Asa William Viccellio, Sr., and Annie Hardy Viccelio.
As a young wife and mother she moved to Stuart, Virginia where her husband was assigned by the United States Department of Agriculture. She taught in the Stuart and Patrick County Schools and served as the volunteer organist of the Stuart United Methodist Church for more than 20 years. After returning to Chatham in 1969, she taught in the Pittsylvania County Schools until retirement. She was a member of Watson Memorial United Methodist Church, the Chatham Garden Club and was past regent of the William Pitt Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.
Her husband William Edward Dickerson, Jr., predeceased her. She is survived by her three children William E. Dickerson, III, Martha D. Hamilton, and Anne Morriss Dickerson, her daughter-in-law, Cheryl Dickerson, her son-in-law, Charles Ronald Hamilton, as well as by two grandchildren, Paul Robertson and Kathryn Montgomery, and one great-grandchild, Elizabeth Hill Montgomery.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday June 19, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. from the Watson Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Charles Wickham. Interment will be in the Chatham Burial Park in Chatham, VA. The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 18, 2002 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Scott Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence, 702 S. Main Street, Chatham. Lula Franks
DANVILLE, Va. - Lula Sumpter Smith Franks, 100, of 211 Hampton Drive, died June 16, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home following several years of declining health and three weeks at Roman Eagle.
Born Sept. 10, 1901, in Danville, she was the daughter of Ellis Y. Smith and Daisey Whittaker Smith Harper.
She was married May 19, 1918, to Robert Luther Franks, who predeceased her April 13, 1952. She lived all of her life in Danville. She had worked for the former Danville Knitting Mill and Dan River Mills Inc. for a number of years prior to becoming a full time homemaker. She was a member of the Mosley Memorial United Methodist Church and a member of the former Nora Mosley Bible Class.
Survivors include three daughters, Ruth F. Seiple and Evelyn F. Evans, both of Danville, and Patricia F. Childress of High Point, N.C.; two brothers, Russell L. Franks of Danville, and Phillip E. Franks of Ringgold; 12 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters.
The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park.

Robin Graves
GRETNA, Va. - Robin Lena Graves, 20, of 237 Glade Road, died Sunday morning, June 16, 2002, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 16, 1981, in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of Henry Lewis and Edith Graves, who survive.
She was last employed by Parker Co. in Lynchburg and was a member of Staunton Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, survivors include one daughter, Shaqur Graves of the residence; two sisters, Lashanda Graves of the residence and Tilly Waller of Hurt; four brothers, Gregory Graves and Andrea Crews, both of Altavista, Timothy Waller of Brookneal and Jerry Graves of Halifax; a maternal great-grandmother, Mollie Graves of Lynch Station; and a paternal great-grandmother, Gracie Stone of Gretna.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Miracle Revival Fellowship Holiness Church with Bishop Milton Waller officiating. Interment will follow at Staunton Baptist Church cemetery in Long Island.

William Martin
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - William Thomas Martin, 80, of 309 Merritt St., died June 17, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Feb. 12, 1922, in Halifax County, he was the son of Felix D. Martin and Mary Powell Martin.
He was married to Chrystine Coates Martin, who survives. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Millstone, was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II, was a POW in Normandy, a survivor of the Grostychow Death March, received four bronze stars, a POW Medal and an Air Medal. He was a member of the American Legion Post 8.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sisters, Essie M. Wade of South Boston, and Hallie M. Puckett of Nathalie; and one granddaughter.
He was predeceased by one daughter, Lois M. Stone.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Watts officiating. Interment will follow at First Baptist Church of Millstone cemetery with military rites.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.

Early ‘Jack' Moss
DANVILLE, Va. - Early "Jack" Moss Sr., 73, of 3767 Vandola Road, died Saturday, June 15, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born September 21, 1928 in Pittsylvania County in the Vandola community, he was a son of Charlie Lamberth Moss and Annie Calvert Moss, who both predeceased him.
He was married to Margaret Hall Moss, who survives. Mr. Moss was a well known farmer in the Vandola community and later retired from Maola Dairy Company.
He attended Brosville School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He served in Germany during the Korean conflict.
He was a member of Vandola Baptist Church where he was a deacon and sung in the choir. He was a past president of Westover Ruritan Club.
Mr. Moss had been in declining health for two years and was in the hospital one month.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Cynthia Moss Parker of Keeling, Va. and Susan Moss Harville of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one son, Early Jackson Moss, Jr. of Chatham, Va.; three sisters, Mildred Gammon and Pencie Soyars, both of the Vandola community, and Eva Mae Stratton of Danville, Va.; and five grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Charles E. Moss and Garland Moss, five sisters, Emma Moss, Ollie Lynskey, Doris Pilson, Virgie Hylton and Eula Moss, and one grandchild, Joshua Hardison.
The funeral will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at Vandola Baptist Church with the Rev. Rick Lancaster, the Rev. Dr. LeRoy Clack and the Rev. Bill Owsley officiating. Interment will follow at the Moss family cemetery with military honors by American Legion Dan River Post #1097 honor guard.

Henry ‘Ham' Myers
GRETNA, Va. - Henry "Ham" Myers, 79, of 2161 Cotton Patch Road, died Sunday morning, June 16, 2002, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 14, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Luther and Fannie Stone Myers.
He was married Dec. 2, 1947, to Louise Witcher, who predeceased him. He joined Union Baptist Church at an early age, later moving his membership to Elba Baptist Church. He farmed most of his life with R.B. and Cletta, and William Farmer.
Survivors include five children, Boggie Cecil "B.C.", Henry C. "H.C.", Christine, George Benjamin "Pee Wee", and Willie Lee "Mickey"; one brother, Clyde Myers of Gretna; one sister, Sally Hicks of Lynchburg; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by four brothers, Christopher Myers, Francis Myers, Newton Myers and Joe Myers; and four sisters, Tossie Tyree, Louise Berger, Judith Howard and Effie Ford.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Elba Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. B.I. Baize officiating. Interment will follow at Witcher-Johnson Family Cemetery in Pittsville.
The viewing will be held from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday and the family will be at the residence of Henry C. Myers, 1829 Hodnetts Road in Gretna.

DANVILLE, Va. - Iola Logan Hall Spinner, 66, of 152 New St., died Saturday, June 15, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 31, 1935, in Danville, she was the daughter of James Smith Logan and Hassie Miller Logan.
She was married to Lloyd E. Spinner. She was a member of Union Street Baptist Church and was employed by Piedmont Medical Center.
Survivors include one son, Darrell Hall of Danville; one brother, Herbert Logan of Danville; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Union Street Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Griffith officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
The viewing will be held from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday and the family will be at the residence.

Rev. Lewis Stewart
DANVILLE, Va. - The Rev. Lewis John William Stewart, 78, of 432 Heritage Drive, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after three years of declining health.
Born June 15, 1924, he was the son of Thomas Stewart and Sylvia Spinger Stewart.
He was married to Evelyn Fuller Stewart, who survives. He had lived in Florida for a number of years before moving to Danville nine years ago. He was the hospital chaplain for a number of years and had served as pastor at Rivermont Baptist Church and Willis Memorial Baptist Church in Cascade. He was a member of Keeling Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Mark Stewart and Scott Stewart, both of Danville; one sister, Helen James of Phoenix, Ariz.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

DANVILLE, Va. - Sylvia Lee Towell Thornton, 59, of 2228 Windridge Court, died Sunday, June 16, 2002 at her residence.
Born June 21, 1942 in Lexington, N.C. she was a daughter of John Towell and Beatrice McKnight Towell.
She was married to Larry William Thornton, who survives. She lived most of her life in the Danville area and was a homemaker and retired as a beautician due to declining health. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three daughters, Tina Luketic and Terri Luketic Totherow, both of Danville, and Debbie Meade Anderson of Dry Fork; four sisters, Carolyn Austin and Lillie Mae Gauldin, both of Dry Fork, Linda Shumate of Danville and Lou Ella Parker of Colonial Heights; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Westover Baptist Church with the Revs. Dr. Doug Barber and J.B. Baldridge officiating. Interment will be private.

Curtis Turner
DANVILLE, Va. - Curtis Deroy Turner, 88, formerly of 1721 Aspen St., died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born April 18, 1914, in Danville, he was the son of Otis Lambert Turner Sr. and Dora Hughes Turner.
He was married April 18, 1936, to Avo Cates Turner, who survives. He lived most of his life in Danville and retired from the city of Danville where he worked in maintenance with the Public Works Department and the City of Danville Electric Department. He was of the Holiness faith and attended the First Pentecostal Holiness Church.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Garnett L. Turner of Vienna, Ga., and Rodger D. Turner of Blairs; one daughter, Joyce Perkins Gibbs of Danville; two sisters, Sadie Corn of Williamston, S.C., and Lottie Samuels of Danville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, Otis L. "Billy" Turner Jr. and two sisters, Dorothy Allen and Geraldine Hill.
The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Steve Lamb officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 p.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence of his daughter, 408 Pinecrest Drive.
