Robert ‘Buddy' Webb
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Lewis "Buddy" Webb, 54, of 121 South Hunter St., died Monday, June 17, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 3, 1947, in Danville, he was the son of Junus Webb, who survives, and the late Valetta Harvell Webb.
He was married to Jean Adkins Webb, who survives. He lived all of his life in Danville and was of the Baptist faith. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, two Purple Hearts, Bronze Star Medal, Navy Commendation Medal and Combat Action Ribbon. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1969 due to permanent disability.
In addition to his wife of the residence and father of Danville, survivors include one daughter, Joy Tolley of Arizona; and two sisters, Shirley Rhodes and Nancy Harmon, both of Danville.
The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Richard Markham officiating. Interment will follow with military honors performed by American Legion Post 1097 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.

Mamie Lee Allen Dabbs
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Mamie Lee Allen Dabbs, formerly of 5759 N.C. Highway 62 South, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at White Oak Manor Home of Burlington.
Born Oct. 5, 1923, in Person County, she was the daughter of Hal and Hattie Whitt Allen.
She worked in textiles and was a homemaker. She was educated in the Orange County schools, a long time member of Oakview Presbyterian Church and a former elder, a member of the choir and a Sunday school teacher.
She was married to W.B. "Pete" Dabbs, who predeceased her Sept. 7, 1972.
She is survived by two daughters, Linda D. Wilson of Burlington and Patricia Suttcliffe of Reidsville; two sisters, Rachael Murphy of Mebane and Leithe Childrey of Hillsborough; four grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, J.W. Allen.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Oakview Presbyterian Church with Bob Hillman officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Robert Edward Eanes Jr.
RICHMOND, Va. - Robert Edwards Eanes Jr., 65, of Richmond, died Dec. 19, 2002.
Survivors include his five children, Ryan, Josh, Robert, Michael and Theresa and several grandchildren.
His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Road, where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday. Interment will be in Dale Memorial Park.
Sarah Catherine Clutter Fitzpatrick
DANVILLE, Va. - Sarah Catherine Clutter Fitzpatrick, formerly of Danville, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Frederick Villa Nursing Home in Catonsville, Md.
Born June 24, 1916, in Danville, she was the daughter of Eugene Clutter and Bertha Clutter.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.
She was married to Leo F. Fitzpatrick, who predeceased her on March 12, 1992.
She is survived by a son, Michael Douglas Fitzpatrick of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Gladys James of Danville and Meryle Simmons of Greensboro, N.C. and four grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Veronica Lee Brady.
The graveside funeral will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Mountain View Cemetery with Father Charles L. Breindel officiating.

Rev. Dr. Woodrow A. Giles
DANVILLE, Va. - The Rev. Dr. Woodrow A. Giles, of 148 Dublin Court, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 18, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Mumford Bland Giles and Nettie Adams Giles.
He was a graduate of La Crosse High School in 1931. He joined the Methodist Church at the age of 15. He was a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service from 1935. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1945 during World War II. After the service, he returned to Danville and worked at the Danville Post Office.
In 1952, at the age of 40, he answered a call to the ministry. He left his job at the post office and enrolled in Averett College where he received his Junior College Literacy Diploma in 1954. He went on to receive a B.A. from Lynchburg College. He graduated Cum Laude and was a member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. He then received his Bachelor of Divinity and Master of Divinity from Duke University. He earned a Doctorate of Divinity in 1977 from Berean Graduate School of Divinity.
During over four decades as a Methodist minister, he served many churches, including Park Place in Norfolk, and in this area, Piney Forest (now St. Luke's) Stokesland, Harmony and Cascade. For eight years, he served Moseley Memorial Methodist Church where he was named Pastor Emeritus.
He was also a thirty-second degree Mason in the Danville Virginia Scottish Rite Body. He served seven years on the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross in Danville.
He is survived by a brother, Oscar Champ Giles of Ringgold.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary Milstead officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Townes Funeral Home.

Ronald Wayne Hancock
DANVILLE, Va. - Ronald Wayne Hancock, 68, of 233 Wooding Ave., died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at his residence. He had been in declining health for the past seven years.
Born June 28, 1934, in Danville, he was the son of Leo J. Hancock, who predeceased him and Gladys Jean Edwards Hancock, who survives.
He lived most of his life in Danville and was a retired welder and motel manager. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a former member of American Legion Memorial Post #325. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was married to Pat Scearce Hancock, who survives.
In addition to his mother and wife, he is survived by a daughter, Tracy Hancock Largen of Danville; two stepsons, Joseph M. Purnell of Danville and David F. Purnell of Tampa, Fla.; a sister, Donna Tilbury of Greensboro, N.C.; one grandchild and two step grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, David Hancock.

Sallie G. Mabin
DANVILLE, Va. - Sallie G. Mabin, 89, of 146 Smith St., died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at the University Hospital in Augusta, Ga.
She was born Aug. 23, 1913, in South Boston, to the late Wayman and Margaret Farmer Garrett.
She was married to Willard Mabin, who preceded her in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Florene M. Jeffries of Bronx, N.Y. and Margaret Smith of Hephzibah, Ga.; a sister, Amanda McLaughlin of Danville; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her daughter, Laverne Bethel.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Beulah Baptist Church with Dr. Frankie Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memory Garden.

Mary Thompson Newton
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Thompson Newton, 92, 509 Woodlawn Drive, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a year of declining health and three days in the hospital.
Born May 21, 1910, in Reidsville, N.C., she was the daughter of Albert Mayfield Thompson and Golden Newcomb Thompson.
She had lived in Danville since 1960 and worked in the weave room at Dan River Mills. She was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church. She was the last surviving member of her generation.
She married Wellington Newton in 1936. He predeceased her on Feb. 5, 1990.
She is survived by six daughters, Loretta Howerton of Danville, Linda Love of Ridgeway, Carolyn Cadd of Pelham, N.C., Barbara Wells of Richmond, Belinda Jones and Virginia Atkinson, both of Danville; three sons, Ronnie Newton of Martinsville, Wayne Newton and Rickey Newton, both of the residence; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Clifton Vernon Owen
CHATHAM, Va. - Clifton Vernon Owen, 87, of 1928 Riddle Road, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center in Danville.
Born Sept. 5, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Henry Wise Owen and Flossie Lee Bailey Owen.
He was a member of Concord United Methodist Church and a retired farmer. He was a World War II combat veteran and served in Italy and the Africa campaign.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred Harrison Owen of the residence; three daughters, Joan O. Crews of Dry Fork, May O. Earles and Frances O. Haley, both of Chatham; three sons, Clifton E. Owen of Griffin, Ga., Steven Owen of Huddleston and Christopher Owen of Dry Fork; four sisters, Estelle Parsons, Ila Haley, both of Danville, Doris Slayton of Virginia Beach and Violet Moore of Chatham; a brother, Arthur Owen of Lynchburg; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by five brothers, Kermit Owen, Herman Owen, Elmo Owen, Sanford Owen and Zenus Owen.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Concord United Methodist Church with the Rev. Darrell Campbell and the Rev. Michael Hearp officiating. Military rites will be given by American Legion Post 1097, Danville.

Lilian Crossley Thomason
DANVILLE, Va. - Lilian Crossley Thomason, of Edgewood Drive, passed away Dec. 20, 2002, at the home of her daughter, Kathleen Murphy, Chesapeake, Va.
She was born in Rochdale, England and came to this country as a young girl and became an American citizen. She lived in Danville most of her life. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
She was predeceased by her husband, Theodore Thomason.
She is survived by two daughters, June Schwartz of Los Angeles, Calif. and Kathleen Murphy of Chesapeake, Va. Also surviving are three sons, Neil Thomason of Sonora, Calif., James Thomason and Brian Thomason, both of Danville; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was a loving grandmother to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. To them she was "Gommie."
The funeral will be conducted Monday morning, Dec. 23, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Swicegood Funeral Chapel by the Rev. J. Richard Markham. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery.

Ulysses Totten
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Ulysses Totten, 88, formerly of Yanceyville, N.C., died Dec. 18, 2002, in the Seven Day Adventist Hospital in Maryland.
A native of Caswell County, he was the son of Tommy and Lema Johnson Totten.
He was a member of Blackwell Missionary Baptist Church and attended Mt. Harden Baptist Church in Washington. He was an employee of John Hopkins University in the security department before his retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Graves Totten of the residence; a sister, Thelma Wright of Yanceyville, N.C.; and four brothers, Otis Totten, Robert Totten, both of Yanceyville, N.C., Henry Totten and Sherman Totten, both of Reidsville, N.C.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Blackwell Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Everett Dickerson officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Ada Betterton Yeatts
HURT, Va. - Ada Betterton Yeatts, 82, of 348 Jasper Wood Road, Lot 13, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 24, 1920, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of William Betterton and Sadie Murphy Betterton.
She was a member of Zion United Methodist Church and was a homemaker.
She was first married to Woodrow Payne, who predeceased her. She later married Charles Anderson Yeatts.
She is survived by a son, John "Sam" Payne of Hurt; two daughters, Mattie Brumitt of Roanoke and Debra Davis of Danville; a stepson, Maurice Yeatts of Altavista; two stepdaughters, Carolyn Towler of Gretna and Linda Gromley of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three brothers, James Betterton of Nathalie, Junior Betterton and Paul Betterton, both of Gretna; four sisters, Louise Meadows of Chatham, Mildred Reaves of South Boston, Juanita Bush of South Boston and Peggy Tickle of Danville; six grandchildren; five step grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and eight step great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Nellie Jones and three brothers, J.W. Betterton, Rufus Betterton and Ben Betterton.
