Bernard Seymore Boaze
DANVILLE, Va. - Bernard Seymore Boaze, 89, of 17 Schoolfield Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at his residence. He had been in declining health for the past two years.
Born June 14, 1913, in the Bachelors Hall community of Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Roy Boaze and Bessie Gammon Boaze.
He lived most of his life in Danville and was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church. He was retired from Dan River Mills. He was the last surviving member of his generation.
He was married to Mary Stallings Boaze.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Hubert G. Boaze of Virginia Beach; two daughters, Linda Long and Shelby Burnett, both of Danville; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Ronald Neal Boaze, one brother, four sisters and one half-sister.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Schoolfield Baptist Church with the Rev. David R. Turbyfill and the Rev. Dr. John H. LaRue officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Schoolfield Baptist Church and at other times at the residence.

Jimmy Boggs Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - James Hamilton "Jimmy" Boggs Jr., 54, of 125 Robin Drive, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 2, 1948, in Danville, he was the son of James H. Boggs Sr. and Patsy Cook Boggs, who survive.
He was a 1970 graduate of Virginia Tech and then entered the U.S. Air Force, where he was a 1st Lt.
He was in management with Fas Mart, Inc. He was a member of Moseley Memorial Methodist Church.
He was married to Susan Foster Boggs.
In addition to his parents and wife, he is survived by two daughters, Amy Dianne Boggs of Lake Worth, Fla. and Trina Lynn Boggs of Danville; one brother, Richard W. Boggs of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Lynn B. Hudson and Melissa B. Watson, both of Danville; one granddaughter and one grandson.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Gary Milstead officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery with full military honors given by the Honor Guard of the American Legion Post #1097.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Townes Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the father's residence, 139 Kenmore Drive.
The family suggests that memorials may be sent to the American Diabetes Association.

John Acey Grubbs
DANVILLE, Va. - John Acey Grubbs went to be with the Lord on Jan. 5, 2003 (just three days shy of his 91st birthday).
He was a native of Danville.
His surviving wife is Juanita Sizer Grubbs and late wife was Gladys South Grubbs, both of Danville.
He was a son of the late Charlie Monroe and Emma Tuck Grubbs.
He was a member of the Church of God Prophecy for over 70 years, a member of Eastern District Council of Carpenters Union #1402 for over 50 years and a retired millwright.
He was preceded in death by sons, Willard Anthony and Delano Edison Grubbs; sisters, Ethel East, Mary Fox and Annie Collins; brothers, Russell, David, William, Aaron and Claude Grubbs.
He is survived by a sister, Elsie Haskins of Martinsville; a stepdaughter, Frances Gwynn; daughters, Chesley Jacqueline Poteat of Danville, Elizabeth Nettles Fender of McCalla, Ala., Marsha Pinnick of Damascus, Va. and Sheila Sickinger of Church Road, Va.; sons, Rodger Grubbs and David Grubbs of Petersburg and Robert Grubbs of Sutherlin, as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at 812 Holland Road in Danville.
A tribute service will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday night, Jan. 8, at Swicegood Funeral Home, West Main St., Danville.
Belva Compton Hall
DANVILLE, Va. - Belva Compton Hall, 94, formerly of 134 Westmoreland Court, Apt. 2C, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at Abington Place. She had been in declining health for three years and had been a resident of Abington Place for the past two years.
Born July 8, 1908, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Willie Compton and Sue Slayton Compton.
She lived her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. She was retired from Thalhimers Department Store where she worked as a salesperson. She was an active member of Kentuck Baptist Church and the Philathea Sunday School class until her health began to fail.
She married Harry L. Hall on Dec. 28, 1927. He predeceased her Oct. 13, 1977.
She is survived by two brothers, Lacy Compton and Johnnie Compton and two sisters, Alma C. Adams and Margaret C. Hogan, all of Danville.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Lynwood Compton and Homer Compton and two sisters, Beatrice C. Adams and Thelma C. Wiles.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Dr. A.C. Smith and Dr. Jim Gosney officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Margaret C. Hogan, 143 Locust Lane.

Konrad Lautenbach
CALLANDS, Va. - Konrad Lautenbach, 74, of Chatham, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at Duke University Medical Center.
He was the son of Josef Lautenbach Sr. and Marie Messner Lautenbach, who predeceased him.
He lived in Baptistown, N.J. before moving to Callands.
He owned and operated a barber shop in Clifton, N.J. and retired from Lipton Tea in Flemington, N.J. He was of the Christian faith.
He was married to Theresia Strammer Lautenbach.
In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by one daughter, Rosemarie L. Dipple of Baptistown, N.J.; two sons, Roland Lautenbach of Raleigh, N.C. and Roy Lautenbach of Callands; and seven grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Josef Lautenbach Jr.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Scott Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment will be at Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham.

Herman William Lewis
DANVILLE, Va. - Herman William Lewis, 83, a resident of Piney Forest Health Care, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003. He had lived at the center for the past three years.
Born June 25, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Henry W. Lewis and Nettie Hughes Lewis.
He worked as a pressman for the U.S. government at the Bureau of Printing and Engraving for 23 years. He completed his pressman's apprenticeship at the V.P.I. extension in Danville. He worked in Washington, D.C. until his retirement in 1984, then moved to Lake Placid, Fla. In 1998, he returned to Danville.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Marine Corp in the Pacific.
He was married to Christine Virginia Hall Lewis, who predeceased him.
He is survived by four daughters, Patricia Lewis Stubbles, Sandra Lewis Williams, Judy Lewis Lumpkin and Sharon Darlene Lewis White, all of Danville; a son, Keith Darryl Lewis of Pelham, N.C.; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three brothers and one sister.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Lester Peters officiating. American Legion Post #1097 will conduct military honors.

Nellie Rice Mahaley
PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Nellie Rice Mahaley, 78, of 96 Easy St., died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003 in Durham Regional Hospital, after being in declining health for the past seven months.
Born Feb. 25, 1924, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of James Franklin Rice and Ossie Massey Rice.
She lived most of her life in Caswell County and had resided in Providence since 1942.
She retired from Dan River Mills.
She was a member of Shady Oak Baptist Church and active with the choir.
She was married to Robert Lee Mahaley.
In addition to her husband, of the residence, she is survived by three sons, George Lee Mahaley of Pelham, James Robert Mahaley of Providence and Wayne Thomas Mahaley of Yanceyville; three sisters, Edna McAdams of Burlington, Lena Mahaley of Yanceyville and Thelma Farrington of Burlington; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Avery Marshall officiating. Interment will follow in Shady Oak Baptist Church Cemetery, Walters Mill Road, Providence.

Clara Rowland Hood McMann
DANVILLE, Va. - Clara Rowland Hood McMann, 88, formerly of 46 Baltimore Ave., died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home. She had been a patient at the home for the past seven years.
Born Feb. 19, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Henry David Rowland and Mattie Lovelace Rowland.
She lived most of her life in Danville and was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church. She had worked at Dan River Mills for 43 years. She was the last surviving member of her generation.
She was married to Coy C. Hood. He predeceased her on April 30, 1945.
She is survived by a son, James Baxter Hood of Danville.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Rebecca Rowland.
The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Greenfield Baptist Church Cemetery, Gretna, with the Rev. David R. Turbyfill and the Rev. R.G. Rowland officiating.
The family will be at the residence of her son, 46 Baltimore Ave.

Helen Holt Rice
DANVILLE, Va. - Helen Holt Rice, 75, of 431 Gay St., died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 13, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Leonard Thomas and Catherine Holt Thomas.
She was employed with Lorillard prior to her retirement.
She was married to Charlie Rice.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by three daughters, Patricia Diane Keene of the residence, Nancy Rice and Linda Rice, both of Danville; a son, Bruce Rice of Danville; three sisters, Mary Ann Giles of Woodbridge, Nancy Adams and Brenda Thomas, both of Danville; two brothers, Leonard Thomas of Ontario, Canada and Wayne Thomas of Mechanicsville; a grandmother, Minnie Hairston of Danville and numerous grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Charlie Rice Jr. and seven siblings.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Missionary Church with the Rev. James Murrell officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens Cemetery.

George Scheuerman
SUTHERLIN, Va. - George Scheuerman, 89, of 297 Slayton Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, in Piney Forest Health Care, after being a resident there and in declining health for the past seven years.
Born June 25, 1913, in Baltimore, Md., he was the son of George Scheuerman Sr. and Elizabeth Scheuerman.
He lived in Miami, Fla. prior to moving to Danville in 1971 and, prior to his retirement, he was a cabinet maker for the Peninsula Casket Company.
He was married to Louise M. Scheuerman on Nov. 18, 1933. She predeceased him on August 28, 1995.
He is survived by one daughter and her husband, Susie S. Merricks and Larry J. Merricks of Sutherlin; one sister, Leona S. Vencil of Maryland; two grandchildren, John C. Merricks of Keeling and Kenneth H. Merricks of Danville; four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
The graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Wayne Reese officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel. At other times they will be at the residence.

DANVILLE, Va. - Mamie Hairston Seal, 80, of 320 Williams Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003 at the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Blackstone.
Born Oct. 2, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Sammy and Virginia Oliver Hairston.
She was married to Junior Seal.
In addition to her husband, of the residence, she is survived by one daughter, Gloria Jones of Georgia; three sons, Johnny Seal of the residence, Robert Seal of Richmond and Raymond Seal of Greensboro, N.C.; and one sister, Elizabeth Davis of Danville.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Mount Sinai Glorious Church of God with Bishop Arthur Linder officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.
