Elizabeth Tucker Jennings
LONG ISLAND, Va. - Elizabeth Tucker Jennings, 74, of 1941 Hubbard Road, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at her residence.
Born Dec. 25, 1928, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Phillip William Tucker and Arie Word Tucker.
She was a member of New Second Buffalo Baptist Church where she was the president of the Ladies Fellowship and a member of the Deaconess Board.
She is survived by her husband, Paul Jennings of the residence; four daughters, Pauline Pannell of Hurt, Margaret Miller of Long Island, Lois Jennings of Naruna and Cynthia Evans of Hurt; two sons, Paul D. Jennings of Hurt and Dale Jennings of the residence; four sisters, Lillie Boyd of Nathalie, Fannie Madison, Della Gilliam and Ella Minor, all of Roanoke; three brothers, Charlie Tucker of Nathalie, Samuel Tucker and Steven Tucker, both of Roanoke; 19 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Word; her stepmother, Ella Mazzie Tucker and a foster mother and father, Maulde and Frank Jennings.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at New Second Buffalo Baptist Church with the Rev. William Yancey officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Mary Lee Martin
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Lee Martin, 87, formerly of 230 North Woodberry Ave., died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, in Piedmont Geriatric Hospital in Burkeville.
Born Jan. 11, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Claude Hunter Martin and Lottie Collins Martin.
She attended Pittsylvania County schools and was a graduate of Averett College and Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia. She taught in the public schools of Virginia for a number of years. She also taught one year at Ferrum College and seven years at Averett College.
She was a former member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, where she was a pianist for a number of years. She also was a member and past president of the Mt. Hermon Woman's Club.
At the time of her death and for a number of years, she was a member of the Lighthouse Independent Methodist Church on Woodberry Drive, Danville. She was a member and past regular of the Joseph Gravely Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the Anne Eliza Johns Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
She is survived by one sister, Frances Martin Taylor of Danville; one brother, Claude H. Martin Jr. of Danville; one niece; three nephews; two great nieces and one great nephew.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by one brother, John C. Martin.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Joey Faucette officiating.
The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday in the Azalea Room at the Stratford House. At other times they will be at the residence of Frances M. Taylor, Stratford House, Apt. 304.

Eugene R. Motley
DANVILLE, Va. - Eugene R. Motley, 68, of 1000 Westover Drive, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after one month of declining health.
Born Feb. 23, 1934, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Murry Motley and Lucy Shelton Motley.
Mr. Motley had lived his entire life in Danville and Pittsylvania County and was a graduate of Chatham High School. He worked in the meat department at A&P Supermarket for many years and at his retirement in 1999 was a partner in the Old Dutch Supermarket chain.
Mr. Motley was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and taught Sunday school for many years. He was an active participant of the Piedmont Mall Walker's Club.
He was married to Nancye Jean Bigger Motley. In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by a son, Michael A. Motley and his wife, Pam C. Motley, of South Boston; a daughter, Terri Lynn Motley of Dry Fork; two sisters, Vickie M. Gwaltney of Eden, N.C. and Effie M. Giles of Johnson City, Tenn. and a brother, Dale Motley of Chatham.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Ross Range Sr. officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence of his mother-in-law, Maude Bigger, 206 Ruskin Street.

Mabel Reed Nelson
DANVILLE, Va. - Mabel Reed Nelson, 87, of 928 Old Mayfield Road, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, in Piney Forest Health Care Center, after being in declining health for the past two years and in the nursing home for the past year.
Born July 26, 1915, in Galax, she was the daughter of James Allen Reed and Ally Sturgall Reed, who predeceased her.
She lived in Pelham, N.C. for most of her life and lived on Old Mayfield Road for one year. She worked for Dan River, Inc. in the #2 Spinning Room. She was a member of Gatewood Baptist Church, sang in the choir and was a member of the Lady's Circle.
She married Lee Nelson on June 6, 1946. He predeceased her May 13, 1990.
She is survived by one daughter, Lois N. Hatcher of Danville; two sons, Lester "Dickie" Smathers of Colonial Heights and Joel "Butch" Smathers of Greensboro, N.C.; one sister, Norma Reed Smith of Danville; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by one grandson, three brothers and seven sisters.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. David Hatcher and the Rev. Johnny Gentry officiating. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Helen Payne
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - It is with profound sorrow we announce the death of Ms. Helen Payne, 82, of 261 Dillard School Drive, who died Sunday morning, Jan. 19, 2003, at 9:45 a.m., in the Sentra Nursing Facility in Barco, N.C.
She was a native of Campbell County, Va., the daughter of the late Robert Baldwin Payne and the late Mary Lou Morgan Payne, born Dec. 5, 1920. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Danville, Va., where she was a member of the Catholic Women's Club. She was a graduate of Campbell County High School and furthered her education at North Carolina Central University with a B.S. degree in home economics. She furthered her studies at New York University in New York, North Carolina State University in Raleigh and the University of North Carolina Greensboro, Greensboro, N.C.
She was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Epsilon Phi Honorary Extension Fraternity, NAACP, Friend Li-Lettes, the American Home Economics Association, District State and National Association of Home Economists. She was also a member and served on the following committees: Civic Center committee, Council on Aging committee, State Health Coordinating Council committee, Piedmont Health Systems Agency committee, Family Medical Board, the Caswell Division Rural Senior Employment Program, Caswell's Art Council and the Community Development Program.
She retired from Caswell County as home demonstration agent after 33 years of service.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys P. Griffin and Mitchell Payne.
She is survived by two nephews, Vinton A. Griffin (Pamela V.) of Chesapeake, Va. and Robert S. Griffin (Patricia) of Chicago, Ill.; one sister, Mrs. Bettie A. Sullivan (Rodney) of Columbia, South Carolina; one God child, Cecelia (CC) Moore; a devoted friend, Mrs. Erma Jones of Burlington, N.C. and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Ms. Helen Payne will be Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, 10 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Danville, Va., with burial in the Payne Family Cemetery in Gladys, Va.
The family visitation and rosary wake will be Tuesday evening from 7-8 p.m. at Fulton Funeral Home Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Caswell County Cancer Society.

Merritt 'Phil' Saunders
DANVILLE, Va. - Merritt "Phil" Saunders, 73, of 269 Hairston St., died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for the past three years, was a patient at Piney Forest Health Care Center for one month and in the hospital for one day.
Born May 20, 1929, in Halifax County, he was the son of John Saunders and Ethel McCormick Saunders.
He lived most of his life in Danville and was a member of Arlington Baptist Church. He was a gas truck driver for Hunter Oil Company and served five years in Korea with the U.S. Army.
He was married to Barbara Scearce Saunders, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Michael Jason Saunders of Danville.
The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Greeson officiating. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Dan River Post #1097 Honor Guard.

Sarah P. Warren
IVOR, Va. - On Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, in Danville Regional Hospital, God called home to rest from labor to reward, Mrs. Sarah P. Warren.
Sarah was born on April 3, 1917, in Southhampton County, Va. to the late Frank and Elizabeth Parker.
She attended Hayden High School in Franklin, Va. She pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education at Virginia State University, Petersburg, Va.
Sarah accepted Christ at a very early age and joined the St. Luke United Church of Christ. She faithfully served her church in the capacity of Sunday School teacher, choir member, church clerk and member of the missionary circle.
She served as an educator with Southhampton and Surry counties. Sarah was known as a dedicated teacher. She loved working with young children and will be remembered by her colleagues. She later retired from the Surry County Public Schools.
She was joined in holy matrimony to the late William H. Warren and to this union one child was born. Sarah was a loving and devoted wife and mother. After her marriage, she transferred her membership to Gilfield Baptist Church, Ivor, Va., where her husband was a member. She served in many capacities there. Shortly following her husband's death, she reunited with St. Luke where she remained faithful until she moved out of the area.
She is survived by one daughter, Vernetta W. Hairston of Cascade; one son-in-law, Edward Hairston of Cascade; two grandsons, Jerond Hairston of Vero Beach, Fla. and Jarrett Hairston of Cascade; one great-granddaughter, Angela B. Murray of Lumberton, N.C. and one sister, Mary P. Johnson of Washington, D.C.; one brother-in-law, Robert Johnson of Washington, D.C. and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Gilfield Baptist Church in Ivor, Va. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Delphine Payne Womack
DANVILLE, Va. - Delphine Payne Womack, 43, of 341 Little Creek Court, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
Born July 7, 1959, in Danville, she was a daughter of Mary Frances Keen Payne, who predeceased her and Samuel Payne, who survives.
In addition to her father, she is survived by two daughters, Deliane Womack and Jelisa T. Womack; four sisters, Rosa Adams, Ethel Hutcherson, Gladiona Jones and Geraldine Morton and two brothers, Bishop E.L. Payne and Michael Lewis Payne, all of Danville.
The memorial will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with Bishop John Morton officiating.

Hazel Hedrick Brown
GRETNA, Va. - Hazel Hedrick Brown, age 69, of 2681 Cotton Patch Road, Gretna, died Monday, December 23, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 16, 1933, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Ernest A. Hedrick and Annie Short Hedrick. She was predeceased by her first husband, Harold Doss, her second husband, Clyde Brown, a son, Gerald Doss, a brother, Henry Hedrick, two sisters, Mary Newman and Vernell Barbour. Mrs. Brown was a member of Greenfield Baptist Church and was a former bus driver with the Pittsylvania County School System.
She is survived by two sons, Mike Doss and Dwight Brown, both of Gretna; a daughter, Janice Arthur of Sandy Level; three brothers, Shirley Hedrick of Hurt, John Hedrick of Gretna and Giles Hedrick of Fieldale; two sisters, Helen Walker of Danville and Annie Bell Vasser of Gretna; three grandchildren, Jamie Lee Brown, Jade Nicole Doss and Kasey Lynn Brown.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 26, 2002 at Greenfield Baptist Church by the Rev. R.G. Rowland. Burial will follow in Gretna Burial Park.

Phyllis 'Phedot' Lewis
DANVILLE, Va. - Phyllis "Phedot" Lewis, 46, of 2101 Kentuck Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002 at her residence.
Born April 12, 1956, in Arcadia, Fl., she was the daughter of David Yarnall, who survives, and Helen Godfrey Seifring.
She had been living in the Danville area for the past 11 years and was a member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church.
She was married to Terry Lee Lewis.
In addition to her husband, of the residence, and her father, she is survived by one daughter, Erica Waller of Ringgold; one son, Robert Lewis of Sioux Falls, S.D.; three brothers, David Yarnall of Louisville, KY, Thomas Yarnall of Canarillo, CA and Steven Yarnall of Melbourne,Fl; one sister, Dorrie Rickett of Melbourne, FL; and seven grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service 11 a.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Phillip Duckett and the Rev. Roger Ewing officiating. Interment will be private.

Johnathan Edward Neal
HURT, Va. - Johnathan Edward Neal, 30, of 133 Perdue Drive, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at Quarry Road.
Born June 20, 1972, in Danville, he was the son of Jerry Edward Neal and Susan Hamlett Neal Buckner.
He lived most of his life in the Danville area and graduated from George Washington High School. He was employed with Burton Roofing Company of Evington. He attended Motley Baptist Church.
In addition to his father of Ringgold and his mother of Eden, N.C., he is survived by a stepfather, Bill Buckner of Eden; a stepmother, Vicki H. Neal, a maternal grandmother, Louise R. Hamlett of Hurt; a paternal grandmother, Mattie G. Neal of Blairs; four stepsisters, Ann Buckner, Jeanne B. Penn, both of Eden, N.C., June Beth Buckner of Blanch, N.C. and Karyn Preston of Danville and three stepbrothers, Jay Buckner, James Buckner, both of Danville and Eric Gunnell of Henderson, Nev.

Thelma Phelps Ray
DANVILLE, Va. - Thelma Phelps Ray, 74, of 48 Oak Ridge Avenue, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002 in Danville Regional Medical Center, after being in declining health for nine years and in the hospital for three weeks.
Born July 11, 1928, in the Mt. Cross community, she was the daughter of Albert Lee Phelps and Irene Elizabeth Turner Phelps. She lived in Danville on Oak Ridge Avenue for 28 years and had worked in the spinning room at Dan River Mills for 15 years.
She was married to George Warner Ray Sr., who predeceased her March 4, 1997.
She is survived by one daughter, Brenda Ray, of the residence; one son, George W. Ray Jr. of Ringgold; six sisters, Lillie Krawetz of Chesapeake, Va, Betty Minter of Cascade, Ruby Dillard of Blairs, Clara Ketchum of Danville, Shirley Moorefield of Brosville and Marie Dillion of Whitmell; three brothers, Howard Phelps of Danville, Bud Phelps of the Mt. Cross community and William Phelps of Brosville; and two grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Gilmore Hundley officiating. Interment will follow.
