Forrest H. Rodden
WILMINGTON, DE - Forrest H. Rodden, 84, of Wilmington, DE died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002 at Lutheran Home of Moorestown, N.J. after a brief illness.
Mr. Rodden was originally from Danville, VA. He moved to Wilmington in 1946 after he married the former Doris Lee Guill, who was from Ringgold, VA. Forrest worked at the DuPont Co. Textile Research Lab in Wilmington until his retirement in 1982. He was a World War II veteran and Pearl Harbor survivor. He was a Purple Heart recipient and had attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer before the end of World War II. He continued to serve his country in the Naval Reserve.
Forrest was an active member of Bethany Baptist Church in Newport, DE, teaching Sunday School and helping to maintain the facilities at Camp Wometo. He and his late wife Doris volunteered at Meals on Wheels.
Forrest was an avid gardener and bird watcher. He was an expert on World War II naval history. Forrest will be remembered as a loving husband and father. He was generous to his friends and relatives,both in Wilmington and Danville.
Forrest was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Doris Lee Guill Rodden, who died August 2, 2001. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law Forrest David and Julie Rodden of Cherry Hill, N.J.; two brothers, Nevin Rodden of Pinch, WV and Darden Rodden of Hockessin, DE; and one granddaughter, Laura Alison Frank of Discover Bay, CA.
Funeral services will be 11:45 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 27, at the chapel at Gracelawn Memorial Park, North DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE, where visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. The interment will be in the adjoining Memorial Park.

Allie Shue Stansbury
PELHAM, N.C. - Allie Shue Stansbury, 85, of 484 Red Marshall Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002 at her home, after being in declining health for two years.
Born Feb. 20, 1917, in Alamance County, N.C., she was the daughter of Lucy Shue.
She was of the Baptist faith. She lived most of her life in Danville, Va. and had been a resident of Pelham for the past eight years.
She was retired as a sitter.
She is survived by one son, Sherman Watts of Danville; one daughter, Deborah Carol Wells of Pelham; one sister, Mary Strickland of Northern Virginia; and two grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, David L. Stansbury, who died September 2, 2000; two brothers, A.B. Shue and Ed Shue; and four sisters, Lillie Couch, Susie Knott, Nora Hemp and Alma Ball.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time. The family will be at the residence.

Garland Wayne Vaden
DANVILLE, Va. - Mr. Garland Wayne Vaden, age 56, of 82 Hylton Avenue, died Monday, December 23, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been a patient since Friday and was retired on disability since 1998.
Mr. Vaden was born in Danville, Va., October 31, 1946, a son of Iris Francis Hankins of Danville and the late Roger Herman Vaden. He was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Vaden was predeceased by a daughter, Lisa K. Finney.
Besides his mother, Mr. Vaden is survived by his wife of the home, Betty Collins Vaden. One daughter and son-in-law, Angela Vaden Hamlett and Richard Bryan Hamlett of Danville. Three grandchildren, Joseph Lee Finney, Samantha K. Finney and Alivia Marie Vaden.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2002, at 2 p.m. from the Townes Funeral Home Memorial Chapel by Bishop Jeffery Hopkins. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home on Friday, December 27, 2002, from 7-8:30 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence, 82 Hylton Avenue.
Lillian Wilborn Bagwell
HALIFAX, Va. - Lillian Wilborn Bagwell, 93, of 765 Mountain Road, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Feb. 16, 1909, in South Boston, she was the daughter of James Bailey Wilborn Sr. and Zulene Shanks Wilborn.
She was married to Robert Poindexter Bagwell. She was a member of Beth Car Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Lillian Bagwell Evans and Ann Gordon Bagwell Hunt, both of Halifax, and Robin Bagwell Young of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; one sister, Frances Wilborn Bennett of South Boston; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two brothers, James Bailey Wilborn and Shanks Mitchell Wilborn Sr.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Halifax cemetery with Don Bagwell officiating.
The family received friends Friday at the residence.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Beth Car Baptist Church building fund.

Mildred "Dot" H. Edwards
GRETNA, Va. - Mildred "Dot" Hutcherson Edwards, 77, of 10720 East Gretna Road, died Friday, July 26, 2002, at Westminster-Canterbury.
Born Jan. 23, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Willie Coleman Hutcherson and Effie Farthing Hutcherson.
She was married to Leonard Lawson Edwards. Prior to retirement, she worked at the Renan Cannery. She was also a member of the St. Andrews United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her stepmother, Willie Roach Hutcherson of Gretna; two sons, Roger Edwards and Jimmy Edwards, both of Gretna; two daughters, Brenda Walton of Richmond, and Connie Edwards of Charlottesville; two sisters, Lucy Jennings of Gladys, and Jean Shelton of Gretna; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by one brother, Reese Coleman Hutcherson.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Andrews United Methodist Church with Pastor Bob Newcomb and Rev. Sam Caldwell officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Geneva Coleman
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Geneva Allen Coleman, 75, of Martinsville, died Monday, August 12, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 17, 1927, in Welch, West Virginia, she was a daughter of Cecil Allen and Sessie Blankenship Allen.
She was married to Brice Coleman, who predeceased her. She was retired from Ranzo's Heating and Cooling and Bassett-Walker Co. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one daughter, Cathy Marlowe of Danville; two sons, Tom Ranzo and Ed Ranzo, both of Martinsville; two sisters, Betty Robinson of Parkersburg, W.V. and Lillian Winter of Bulter, Tenn.; one brother, Doug Allen of Ohio; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Norris Funeral Services Chapel. Interment will follow at a mausoleum in Roselawn Burial Park.

DANVILLE, Va. - Pearl Fielder Crews, 82, of 501 Jefferson Street, died Sunday, August 11, 2002, at her residence.
Born May 8, 1920, she was a daughter of Harry Fielder and Alice Hammock Fielder.
She was married to Cabell Crews Sr., who predeceased her. She was a member of Round Pond Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
She is survived by three sons, Cabell Crews Jr. of Danville, Aubrey Lee Crews of Sebastian, Fla. and Richard Lee Crews of Danville; one daughter, Barbara Crews Haskins of Gretna; three brothers, Homer Fielder and David Fielder, both of Antioch, Ill. and Edward Fielder of Hurt; two sisters, Sarah Crews of Sandy Level and Betty Short of Gretna; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Crews Family Cemetery in Sandy Level with the Rev. A.A. Blanks officiating.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Barbara Haskins, 1161 Weatherford Drive in Gretna.

Garland Gammon
HIGH POINT, N.C. - Garland S. Gammon, 69, a resident of 116 Edgeworth Avenue died Saturday, August 10, 2002, at High Point Regional Hospital.
Born January 17, 1933, in High Point, he was a son of William (Bill) Gammon and Helen Steed Gammon.
He graduated from High Point High School and attended High Point College. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a graduate of the Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. He had served as a Methodist minister in Asheboro, Reidsville and in Wilmington, Delaware. He had served as chaplain of the Wilmington, Delaware Fire Department. He later left the ministry to become probation-parole officer with the state of Delaware. In 1989 he retired and returned to High Point. He had served on the Guilford County Board of Mental Health.
Surviving are cousins, nieces and nephews.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Floral Garden Park Cemetery with Dr. C.M. Worthy officiating.

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Marie Graves, 65, of 156 Wall Street, died Saturday, August 10, 2002, at the U.N.C. Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Born April 21, 1937, in Caswell County, she was a daughter of Mattie Louise Graves.
She was a member of Yanceyville Missionary Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
She is survived by one sister, Annie R. Murray of Washington, D.C.; and one brother, James Graves of Yanceyville.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Yanceyville Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. A. N. Grier officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Marie Hardy
DANVILLE, Va. - Recie Marie Lewis Hardy, 83, of 1108 Franklin Turnpike died Sunday, August 11, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home. She had been in declining health for the past two years.
Born Sept. 5, 1918, in Surry, N.C., she was the daughter of Danvis Sexton Lewis and Della Lewis.
She was married to Jabe Andrew Hardy, who predeceased her. She lived her life in Danville and Pittsylvania County areas and worked for 18 years at Dan River Inc. until retirement. She was a member of Evangel Assembly of God Church.
She is survived by three sons, Wayne Andrew Hardy, Edward Milton Hardy and Danny Arthur Hardy, all of Danville; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three step grandchildren; and 21 step great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Delores Diane Hardy and several brothers and sisters.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. William Mizelle and the Rev. J. Brian Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in Schoolfield Cemetery.

Louis Prete
LANCASTER, S.C. - Louis Prete, 73, of 521 Rock Spring Road, died Sunday, August 11, 2002, at his residence.
Born Oct. 8, 1928, in Morgantown, W.V., he was the son of Salvatore Prete and Sarah Belcastro Prete.
He was married to Betty Mohl Prete, who survives. He was a retired General Manager for General Tire in Mayfield, Ky., a member of Lancaster Moose Lodge and was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include four sons, Louis A. Prete of Lancaster, Philip J. Prete of Chapel Hill, N.C., Mark C. Prete of Danville, Va. and Michael J. Prete of Austin, Texas; one brother, James A. Prete of Morgantown, W.V.; four sisters, Virginia Straface, Giovanna Prudnick and Matilda Ferrise, all of Morgantown, W.V. and Mary Hintz of Sterling Heights, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by one brother, Philip John Prete.
The funeral will be held 10 a.m. Friday at Davidson-Mancinelli Funeral Home Chapel in Morgantown, W.V. Interment will follow at East Oak Grove Cemetery.

MILTON, N.C. - Lloyd Harvey Vernon, 69, of 8457 N.C. Hwy. 62 North, Milton, N.C. died Sunday, August 11, 2002, at Hospice House of Alamance, Burlington, N.C. following a lengthy illness.
He was born March 31, 1933, in Caswell County, North Carolina, the son of Clay Hester Vernon, Sr. and Rebecca Bass Vernon.
He was owner of L. H. Vernon Company, Inc. from which he was retired, served in the United States Air Force during the Korean war. He was of the Methodist faith.
He was predeceased by his parents and a son, Ronald Bass Vernon. Survivors include three daughters, Rebecca Vernon Pugh and husband, Richard of High Point, N.C., Penelope Vernon Cooper and husband, Sam of Wytheville, Va. and Nancey Vernon Bradsher and husband, Preston of Milton, N.C.; one brother, Marshall Bryd Vernon of Brunswick, Ga. and seven grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be held Wednesday, August 14, 2002, at New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery, at 1:00 p.m. by Vernon Massingill.

Alice Withers
RUFFIN, N.C. - Alice Elizabeth Williamson Withers, of 136 Big Oak Farm Road, died Saturday, August 10, 2002, in the Brian Center Nursing Home.
Born Feb. 13, 1914, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Albert Williamson and Edith Bell Graves Williamson.
She was married to George Alfred Withers, who predeceased her. She was a member of New Ephesus Baptist Church in Ruffin where she was in the missionary circle. She was a former employee of Burlington Industries prior to retirement and was a homemaker.
She is survived by two sons, Alfred Withers of Ruffin and Milton Withers of Milton; three daughters, Dorothy Benton of Wardoff, Md., Gladys Williamson of Reidsville and Edith Bowe of Yanceyville; two brothers, Norman Williamson of Yonkers, N.Y. and Willie Onza Williamson of Yanceyville; two sisters, Edith Martin of Ruffin and Matoka Withers of Washington, D.C.; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at New Ephesus Baptist Church with the Rev. William Lee officiating. Interment will follow at Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Pelham.
