Nathaniel Wooding
BRADENTON, Fla. - Col. Nathaniel H. Wooding Jr., U.S. Army (Ret.), 81, died August 4, 2002, at Blake Medical Center.
Born in Chalk Level, Va., he was the son of Nathaniel H. and Gabriel Wooding, Sr.
He was married to Ann Wooding, who survives. He was a professor of Agricultural Engineering at Penn State University for 32 years before retiring. He served for 30 years in the U.S. Army where he attained the rank of Colonel and fought in Korea in WWII. He was a member of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers, Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Society, Alpha Epsilon Honor Society in Agricultural Engineering, Epsilon Sigma Phi National Honor Extension Fraternity and Extension Professional Association. He was of the Protestant faith.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two daughters, Diane Juncker of Maple Glen, Penn. and Pamela Wooding of Wasilla, Alaska; one son, Henry L. Wooding of Pittsburg, Penn.; one sister, Margaret Woolwine of Christiansburg, Va.; and four grandchildren.
The funeral and interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery.

Cornelia (Connie) Wright
CHATHAM, Va. - Cornelia (Connie) Wright, 70, of 20 Kemper Street, died Friday at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Andrew Lea Bennett.
Born January 27, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Percy and Rosetta Miller Younger.
She was married to Jimmie L. Wright, who predeceased her. She was a member of Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church where she was a member of the Usher Board and Missionary Circle #1. She was also a member of Clarkstown Community Club.
She is survived by five sons, Jimmie L. Wright Jr., Arthur L. Wright, Hugh L. Wright of Ray A. Wright, all of Chatham and Tony V. Wright of Keeling; three daughters, Bernetha W. Saunders, Connie M. Wright and Lisa W. Bennett, all of Chatham; two brothers, Arthur Younger, of Akron, Ohio and Merriwell Dodson of Chatham; five sisters, Mary F. Clark, of Akron, Ohio, Maddie Younger of Gretna, Emma Wilson, Florence Hodnett and Darlene Pritchett, all of Chatham; and 22 grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Greater Triumph Missionary Church with the Rev. Floyd O. Jones officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The viewing will be held 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Chapel of Howerton Funeral Home.

J Bailey
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - J Chalmers DaCosta Bailey age 70, died Monday April 29, 2002. He was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, May 25, 1931, son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Clarence W. Bailey. He graduated from Georgia Military Academy in 1949 and graduated from Wake Forest University in 1954 with a BBA degree. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Order.
He founded and was chief executive officer of Southeastern Advertising, Franchise Enterprises and Bailey Marketing Group and was involved in many other business activities.
He was actively involved in many political activities, notably the gubernatorial campaign of I. Beverly Lake and the senatorial campaigns of Jesse Helms.
He served political appointments as director of the N.C. State Ports Authority, Governor's Business Council on the Arts and Humanities, N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, Nash County F.H.A. Finance Committee, and the regional S.B.A. Commission.
From 1970-1991 he was active in Ducks Unlimited serving on a regional, state and national level. From 1975-1982 he served as director of Ducks Unlimited Canada.
He was an active member of the Rocky Mount Jaycees and Rotary Club for many years and was an active member and fund raiser of the YMCA. He was a supporter of the Rocky Mount and Nash County Cancer Society, United Fund, and Jesse Helms Center. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout and throughout his life continued his support of Boy Scout activities. He was also active in founding and raising funds for Rocky Mount Academy.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Duncan Neal Bailey of the home; daughters, Susan Wooding Bailey Bailey and husband George Tillman Bailey, III of Rocky Mount; Sara Camden Bailey Hodges and husband Fred Murchison Hodges, III of Rocky Mount and Anne Duncan Bailey Weaver and husband John Dewey Weaver, III of Raleigh, NC. Grandchildren; Elizabeth Wooding Bailey and Sallie Tillman Bailey of Rocky Mount, Sara Worth Hodges of Rocky Mount, John Dewey Weaver, IV, Anne Duncan Weaver and Benjamin Holland Weaver of Raleigh, NC; brother, Dr. Lloyd Whitfield Bailey and wife Sarah Patterson Bailey of Rocky Mount, NC; sister Anne Bailey Lewis and husband John William Lewis of Rocky Mount, NC.
He was an active member of Lakeside Baptist Church where memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2002. Services will be conducted by Dr. Jody Wright. Charles Coleman
RINGGOLD, Va. - Professor Charles Kenneth Coleman Sr., 95, of 621 Milton Highway, died Saturday, April 27, 2002 at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born April 15, 1907 in Danville, he was a son of Charles Coleman and Beta Brown Coleman.
He was first married to Margaret Thomas Coleman, who predeceased him, and then later married to Sally White Coleman, who survives. He was a graduate of Howard University, a former candidate for Danville City Council and a lifetime member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He was also active in supporting voting rights for blacks.
Survivors, in addition to his second wife of the residence, include one son, Charles Kenneth Coleman Jr. of Danville; two stepdaughters, Phyllis Younger of Manhattan, N.Y. and Patricia Price of Bronx, N.Y.; and three stepsons, Henry Younger of California, Edward Younger of Queens, N.Y. and Joseph Younger of Brooklyn, N.Y.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one brother, Carl Coleman.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

DRY FORK, Va. - Virginia Willis Davis, 89, of 6008 Dry Fork Road, died Monday, April 29, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center in Danville.
Born May 25, 1912 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Joel Willis and Valeria Harris Willis.
She was married Dec. 27, 1930 to William Edmond Davis, who predeceased her. She lived in Pittsylvania County for all of her life and in the Dry Fork community for more than 60 years. She was retired from Norge Village Laundry and Cleaners in Chatham, where she was manager. She was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church and was active in the Ladies Bible Class and United Methodist Women.
Survivors include three sons, J.W. Davis of Dry Fork and Nelson Davis and Andy Davis, both of Danville; one sister, Ann W. Gauldin of Dry Fork; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by seven brothers and one sister.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hopewell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Clay Knick officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

WOODSTOCK, Ga. - Gladys Marie Stallings Payne Duncan, died April 28, 2002 at North Fulton Hospital in Roswell, Ga.
Born June 22, 1926 in Caswell County, N.C., she was a daughter of Alexander David "Nick" Stallings and Lottie Belle Durham Stallings.
She was first married to Ezra Payne, who predeceased her, and then to Willis J. Duncan, who survives. She was retired from Dan River Mills #3 Dress. She attended Timothy Lutheran Church in Woodstock, Ga.
Survivors, in addition to her second husband, include one daughter, Patricia Anne Payne Keller and her husband Karl of the residence; three sisters, Ethel Edmonds and Mary Boaze, both of Danville, Va. and Mabel Olivia "Libby" Thompson of Martinsville, Va.; six brothers, Percy Stallings, Leonard Stallings and James Otis Stallings, all of Danville, Va., Curtis "Joe" Stallings of Axton, Va., Fred Stallings of Yanceyville, N.C. and Ted Stallings of Blairs, Va.; one grandson, Don Keller and his wife Jami of Woodstock, Ga.; two granddaughters, Pamela Weishaar and her husband Bret of Woodstock, Ga. and Dawn Keller of the residence; and five great-grandchildren, Chelsey Hylton, Michael Weishaar, Bryan Weishaar, Alyson Keller, and Mathew Keller, all of Woodstock.

Born May 26, 1932 in Person County, N.C., she was the daughter of Dee Smith and Manie Daye Smith.
She was married to Henry Goods, who survives. She was a member of the Church of God in Christ Holiness Church in Roxboro, N.C. She was a homemaker.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include five sons, Clifton Leon Goods and Dennis Goods, both of Alton, Dallas M. Goods of Boca Raton, Fla., Charles S. Goods of West Palm Beach, Fla. and Ronnie Goods of Columbus, Ga.; four daughters, Sylvia F. He was married to Nellie Riddle Lynch, who predeceased him. He was retired from Dan River Inc. and was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Mahaley of Providence, N.C. and Janet Griffith of North Kingstown, R.I.; one sister, Nancy Glass of Danville; and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his wife and parents, by two sisters, Kate Graft and Lorine Edmonds.

Born March 17, 1929 in Hurt, she was a daughter of Anderson Parker Short and Florence Brizenbine Short.
She was married to Bennie Thomas Moore, who survives. She was a member of Full Gospel Fellowship Church, and a member of the Senior Citizens Group at Stonewall Jackson Recreational Center. She graduated from Gretna High School in 1947 and was a homemaker.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include three sisters, Roxanna Short of Hurt, Rachel S. Morris of Altavista and Frances S. Dockery of Danville, and two brothers, Dick Short of Hurt and Johnny Short of Gadsden, Ala.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by five brothers and one sister.

She lived most of her life in Danville and was employed as a cardiac technician in the critical care unit of Danville Regional Medical Center.
