Louise Walker Scearce

DANVILLE, Va. - Louise Walker Scearce, 91, formerly of 1016 West Stokes St., died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.

Born Oct. 11, 1911, in Mayfield in Rockingham County, N.C., she was the daughter of William T. Walker and Annie Ferguson Walker.

She was of the Christian faith. She lived in Danville prior to living in Fredericksburg from 1931-1951. She then returned to Danville before going to Blue Ridge Nursing Home in Martinsville six years ago. She retired in 1975 as a sales lady at Southern Department stores.

She was married to Beaumont W. Scearce, who predeceased her June 7, 1973.

She is survived by two daughters, Naydean S. Hayden of Fredericksburg and Dorothy S. Lowe of Danville; a sister, Peggy Hawley of Danville; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Charles B. Scearce officiating.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charles Edwin Swann Sr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Charles Edwin Swann Sr., 56, of 445 Hermitage Drive, Apt. C, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, in the emergency room of Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born April 2, 1946, in Danville, he was a son of Earnest Richardson, who survives, and Clara Swann Richardson.

He was presently employed by Goodyear and was a 1964 graduate of John M. Langston High School.

He was a retired Master Sgt. in the U.S. Air Force, having served 27 years.

In addition to his father, of Danville, he is survived by one daughter, Jessica Flowers of Italy; one son, Charles E. Swann of Greensboro, N.C.; one sister, Ernestine Payne of Danville; one uncle, Charlie Swann of Pittsburgh, Pa. and one aunt, Fatima Alhaqq of Sacramento, Calif.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Carmel Baptist Church with the Rev. James Stewart officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens with full military rites by American Legion Post #29.

Viewing will be held 4-8 p.m. Thursday.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his father, 150 Grace Street.

Janie Barker

SEMORA, N.C. - Janie Talley Barker, 85, of Semora, died Saturday, April 20, 2002 in the Person Memorial Hospital in Roxboro.

Born in Halifax County, Va., she was a daughter of E.E. Talley and Thirza Wilkerson Talley.

She was married to Willie Greenwood Barker, who predeceased her.

Survivors include two sons, W. G. "Bill" Barker of Danville, Va. and Maurice Barker of Milton; one brother, Claude Talley of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one son, Cecil Barker Sr.

The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Person Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Jeanne Neal officiating.

The family will receive friends from 1-8:30 p.m. Monday at the home of a granddaughter, Jennifer Barker Cox, 8141 Ridgeville Road, Leasburg.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Semora United Methodist Church, 12683 N.C. Highway 119 North, Semora, N.C. 27343.

Bobby Denkins

OCALA, Fla. - Bobby Ray Denkins, 68, of 1631 N.E. 71st Street, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at Malcolme Randall Veterans' Administration Medical Center in Gainesville, Fla.

He was born in Danville, Va.

He was married to Norma Matherly Denkins, who survives. He was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church in Danville, Va. He was in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a Korean War veteran.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of Ocala, include one daughter, Sandra Burgner of Citra; two sons, Danny Denkins of Germany and Tony Denkins of Winterhaven; one brother, John Denkins of Cooks, Mich.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The graveside service will be held Monday at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, with full military honors.

Linda Farrell

DANVILLE, Va. - Linda Lee Jones Caywood Farrell, 55, of 129 Campbell Street, died Thursday, April 18, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born November 11, 1946 in Danville, she was a daughter of Raymond Jones, who predeceased her, and Mildred Fallen Jones, who survives.

She was married June 11, 1988 to Charles Farrell, who survives. She taught English at Hargrave Military Academy and was also a drama instructor. She spent several years teaching at Piedmont Community College. She was a member of the National Education Association. She was a member of the Phi-Theta Kappa Sorority. She was an avid reader and had a poetic spirit. "Do not go gently into that good night, rage, rage against the dying of the light." This exemplifies her zest for life. She was to have received the "Teacher of the Year" award on Saturday, April 20, 2002.

Survivors, in addition to her mother of Danville and husband, include two sons, John Henderson Jr. and Charles A. Farrell, both of Danville; two daughters, Laura Lee Haley of Danville and Cathy Nenninger of Penn.; two sisters, Betty Jean White of Danville and Faith Marie Jones-Brown of Reidsville, N.C.; and seven grandchildren.

She was predeceased, in addition to her father, by one brother, Raymond Jones Jr.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rayd Forder officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home and at other times at 413 Jeannette Drive, Danville.

Hugh Flynn

DANVILLE, Va. - Hugh Flynn, Jr., 76, of 1111 Main Street, died Saturday, April 20, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been a resident of the Stratford House for the past year.

Born January 31, 1926 in New York, New York, he was the son of Hugh and Catherine Flynn and married Jeanne McNamara in November of 1947 and she predeceased him.

Survivors include a daughter, Susan Flynn Fischer and her husband Jerry of Danville, and a son, Donald P. Flynn and his wife Laureen of Essex, CT., five grandchildren, Sarah Fischer, Laura Fischer, Andrew Fischer, Matthew Fischer and Zachary Flynn. One brother also survives, Ronald Flynn of Seekonk, MA.

A veteran of WWII, he retired from United Airlines. After retirement, he worked for Comair Airlines for several years. An avid traveler, he had a sense of humor that will be missed. He appreciated his many friends and the loving care he received at the Stratford House.

Memorial services are pending and will be held at Madonna Cemetery in New Jersey.

Eddie Gunnell

DANVILLE, Va. - Eddie Lee Gunnell, 79, of 1460 Blair Loop Road, died Saturday, April 20, 2002 at Piney Forest Health Care Center.

Born Oct. 4, 1922 in Georgia, he was a son of James Gunnell and Eliza Kidd Gunnell.

He was married to Nannie Martin Gunnell, who survives. He lived in Danville for most of his life and worked for Dan River Mills #5 Finish Room for 38 years until retiring. He was a U.S. Army veteran and had been in the nursing home since 1999. He was a member of Westover Baptist Church.

He was predeceased by three sisters and three brothers.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Doug Barber officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home. and at other times at the residence.

Virginia Hooker

PELHAM, N.C. - Virginia Lawson Hooker, 96, of 1102 Holland Road, died Friday, April 19, 2002 at the residence.

Born March 1, 1906 in Ararat, Va., she was a daughter of Doc Lawson and Eveline Goins Lawson.

She was married to Ezra L. Hooker, who predeceased her. She lived most of her life in Pittsylvania and Caswell counties. She was a homemaker and employed by Dan River Mills. She was a member of State Line Baptist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Thelma F. Hooker of the residence, Margie H. McNichols of Blairs, Va. and Maxine H. Martin of Forest, Va.; one sister, Geneva L. Barker of Sardinia, Ohio; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park with the Revs. Wayne Wallace and Leonard Watlington officiating.

The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and will receive friends at other times at the residence.

George Hylton

DANVILLE, Va. - George Coleman Hylton, 87, of 5533 Mount Cross Road, died Thursday, April 18, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 20, 1914 in Lunenburg County, he was a son of G. Lee Hylton and Cordie Cox Hylton.

He was married Jan. 13, 1945 to Mary Coleman Hylton, who survives. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater. He was employed with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Tobacco Division for 30 years until retirement. He was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church and the Danville Kiwanis Club.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include three sons, Charles Coleman Hylton of Danville, G. Hartwell Hylton of Darien, Conn. and Richard Lee Hylton of Danville; two brothers, Albert Hylton of Greensboro, N.C. and William Hylton of Valdosta, Ga.; four sisters, Ciolet Hylton Gochenour of Roanoke, Molly Hylton Wilson of Rushsylvania, Ohio, Jean Hylton Brown of Fairfax and Cordie Hylton Bass of Durham, N.C.; and six grandchildren.

He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one brother, G.L. Hylton.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jonathan Bennett officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Townes Funeral Home and will receive friends at other times at the residence.

The family suggests that memorials be made to Mount Vernon United Methodist Church or to a charity of choice.

Mary Link

ALTON, Va. - Mary Lee Guill Link, 69, of 1034 Alton Post Office Road, died Friday, April 19, 2002 at the residence.

Born May 9, 1932 in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Archie Guill and Nora Hodges Guill Wilson.

She was married to Joseph L. Link, who predeceased her. She was a member of the Alton Homemakers Club and a member of Alton Baptist Church, where she was president of her Sunday School class and vice president of the WMU.

Survivors include two sons, Ray L. Link of Alton and J. Nelson Link of Richmond; one daughter, Cheryl L. Throckmorton of Mechanicsville; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Alton Baptist Church with the Rev. Phillip Ellenburg officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Brooks Funeral Home.

The family suggests that memorials be made to Alton Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 11, Alton, or to the American Cancer Society.

Richie Moore

RINGGOLD, Va. - Richard "Richie" David Moore, 39, of 416 Cedar Road, died April 14, 2002, at the residence of a friend on Major Court in Danville.

Born Dec. 13, 1962, in Danville, he was a son of David Irvin Moore, who survives, and Ennis Crockett Moore.

He lived all of his life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. He was employed by Allen's Pools and Repairs. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors, in addition to his father of Ringgold, include one sister, Brenda Moore Warren.

The graveside service will be announced at a later date.

The family will be at the residence of his father, 416 Cedar Road in the Mountain Hill community.

Jeffrey Pritchett

DANVILLE, Va. - Jeffrey Dean Pritchett, 39, of 364 Willow Briar Lane, died Thursday, April 18, 2002 in Danville.

Born Sept. 22, 1962 in Danville, he was a son of Ray Harvey Pritchett, who predeceased him, and Ocie Pritchett Wadford, who survives.

He lived most of his life in Danville and owned and operated a vinyl siding business. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors, in addition to his mother of Danville, include two stepfathers, Wayne Wadford of Danville and Tony Adkins of Eden, N.C.; one stepmother, Gayle Adkins of Eden, N.C.; three sons, Holden Wayne Pritchett and Michael Ray Pritchett, both of Danville, and Journy Snead of Pelham, N.C.; one brother, Michael Wayne Pritchett of Danville; and one sister, Donna Pritchett Craddock of Danville.

He was predeceased, in addition to his father, by two sisters, Sherry Pritchett and Vicky Pritchett.

The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Harold Kistler officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his mother and stepfather, 28 Oak Ridge Ave.

Tiffany Williams

SUTHERLIN, Va. - Tiffany Nicole Williams, 26, of 3055 Hackberry Road, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born March 16, 1976 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Leonard C. Williams and Virginia L. Oliver Williams, who survive.

She was a member of White Stone Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include four sisters, Cordelia V. Jeffers, Tonya L. Williams and Tracey Bethel, all of Danville, and Demetrius R. Williams of Sutherlin.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at White Stone Pentecostal Holiness Church with Evangelist Gloria Cameron officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

A viewing was held from 4-8 p.m. Saturday at Beavers Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence.
