Lester ‘Simon' Campbell
DANVILLE, Va. - Lester Otis "Simon" Campbell, 80, of 521 Woodlawn Drive, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at the residence.
Born Feb. 20, 1922 in Danville, he was the son of Willie M. Campbell and Mable New Campbell.
He was married July 3, 1954, to Eloise "Lois" Walker Campbell, who survives. He lived all of his life in Danville where he worked for Dan River Mills in the Maintenance Department and the carpenter shop for 30 years. He was a hunter, gardener, and veteran of the U.S. Army. He attended Forest Lawn Baptist Church and had been in declining health since December 2001.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one daughter, Anita Campbell Jones of Danville; three sisters, Rachel C. Emerson of Dry Fork, Dorothy C. Dickerson of Virginia Beach and Gloria C. White of Fitchburg, Mass.; one brother, William Ray Campbell of Blairs; and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one sister, Lois Campbell Stierwalt, and two brothers, Richard Andrew Campbell and Walter Douglas Campbell.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens where taps will be played and a flag will be folded by American Legion Post 325.
The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Chapel and will receive friends at other times at the residence.

Nellie Devine
DANVILLE, Va. - Nellie Inman Devine, 68, of 1647 Maple Drive, died Friday, May 24, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 23, 1934 in Danville, she was a daughter of William Henry Inman and Mary Eunice McVey Inman.
She was married to Joseph Devine, who predeceased her. She was a member of True Gospel Baptist Church and had been in declining health for the past five years. She formerly lived at Outlook Point and worked at Home Health Care as a sitter.
Survivors include one daughter, Glenda O. Carsone of Danville; two sons, Wayne Inman of Lynchburg and Curtis Inman of Brosville; one sister, Choloe Eanes of Brosville; two brothers, the Rev. Hubert E. Inman of Pelham, N.C. and Phillip Inman of Brosville; and seven grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one daughter, Janice Kay Yearty, and three brothers, William Inman, Vincent Inman, and Julian Inman.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the Scarce-Inman Family Cemetery in Whitmell with the Rev. Hubert Inman officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her daughter, 1647 Maple Drive.

Lucy Lewis
HALIFAX, Va. - Lucy Margaret Schofield Lewis, 93, of Oak Level Road, died May 24, 2002 at Piney Forest Health Care.
Born April 22, 1909 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Schofield and Victoria Bohannon Schofield.
She was married to Frank Satterfield Lewis and was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter-in-law, Warnelia Whitlow Lewis of Greensboro, N.C.; one son-in-law, Gilbert Powell of Lexington, N.C.; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a number of great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Wilkins officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ethel Milam
DANVILLE, Va. - Ethel D. Milam, 97, died Friday, May 24, 2002 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Feb. 15, 1905 in Laurel Grove community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Richard Thomas Milam and Mary Frances Davis Milam.
She was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church and First Baptist Church. She was a retired teacher, having taught at Wytheville, Emporia, and Richmond public school systems. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors include a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the graveside at Mountain View Cemetery with the Rev. Susan Hannah officiating.
The family will receive friends at the graveside after the service.

DANVILLE, Va. - Carolyn Harvey Porter, 62, of 937 N. Main Street, died Friday, May 24, 2002 at the residence.
Born April 16, 1940 in Danville, she was a daughter of James Oakey Harvey and Iva Louise Stephens Harvey.
Survivors include one son, Calvin Porter of Danville; two daughters, Melissa P. Martin and Beverly Porter, both of Danville; two brothers, Calvin W. Harvey of New Jersey and Ralph Harvey of Danville; one sister, Velma Barbour of Danville; and two grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by one brother, Melvin Harvey and one sister, June Rembold.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Freddy Vicks officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Elizabeth Porter
DANVILLE, Va. - Elizabeth Johnson Porter, 88, of 103 Hayes Court in the Westover Hills Community, died Friday, May 24, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 8, 1913 in Winside, Neb., she was a daughter of Robert H. Johnson and Anna Sophie Johnson Johnson.
She was married on May 28, 1937 to Arnold Brown Porter, who survives. She attended Fairview United Methodist Church and was retired from Dan River Inc.
She is survived, in addition to her husband of the residence, by one sister, Bernice Philby of Danville.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by two brothers, Milton R. Johnson and Clarence Johnson.
A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Linwood Daniel officiating.

Elsie Farthing Wells
DANVILLE, Va. - Elsie Farthing Wells, 77, of 206 Meadowbrook Drive, died May 25, 2002 in Roman Eagle Memorial Home. She had been in declining health for over four years and had been in Roman Eagle for seven months.
Born January 23, 1925 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Jim Parrish Wells and the late Edna Gourley Wells.
She was married November 18, 1944 to John A. Wells, who predeceased her on June 19, 1994. Mrs. Wells had lived most of her life in Danville where she had retired from Dan River Inc. as a Sheet Hemmer in the #5 Sewing Room of the Schoolfield Division after 41 years of service. She was an active member of Keen Street Baptist Church and a member of the Ruth Sunday School Class as long as her health permitted.
Survivors include one daughter, Shirley W. Collins and her husband, Melvin James Collins of the residence; two sisters, Empress F. Richardson of Danville, and Nina F. Yeager of Dothan, Ala.; one granddaughter, Priscilla C. Harris, and her husband Randy E. Harris of Ringgold; and two great-grandchildren, Casey and Zachary Harris, both of Ringgold.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday, May 27, 2002 at Keen Street Baptist Church with the Revs. Thomas Brown, George Rumney and Steve Carlton officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Ida Elizabeth Turner White, 93, of 9028 Old Highway 86 North, died 5:40 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2002 at the Senior Citizen's Nursing Home in Henderson.
Born Aug. 6, 1908 in Caswell County, she was the daughter of George and Mamie Crawley Turner.
She was married to Eugene Franklin White, who predeceased her June 9, 1991. She worked for Danville Knitting Mills for 56 years and was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son, George W. White of Henderson; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Matthews officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park in Danville, Va.

Gather Hedrick Adams
DANVILLE, Va. - Gather Hedrick Adams, 85, of Roman Eagle Memorial Home, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, after several years of declining health. She had been a resident of the home for six years.
Born Nov. 25, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Sam Hedrick and Esther Towler Hedrick.
She lived her entire life in Pittsylvania County. She was a homemaker and employed at Dan River, Inc. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was married to Jimmie D. Adams, who predeceased her on Jan. 29, 2002.
She is survived by two stepdaughters, Patricia Ferris and Linda Hairfield, both of Danville and two sisters, Dorothy Guill and Hilda Payne, both of Chatham.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Avery Hedrick.
The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park with James Ayers officiating.

GRETNA, Va. - Mary Berger, 79, of 1605 Pittsville Road, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002 at Lynchburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born July 31, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of James Irvin and Maggie Ward Irvin.
She was a retired cook from the Crossroads Restaurant in Gretna. She was a member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church and the Senior Choir.
She was married to Clem Berger, who predeceased her.
She is survived by two daughters, Easter Wilson of Altavista and Margaret Richardson of Asbury, N.J.; two sons, Clem Berger Jr of Red Bank, NJ and Frankie Berger of Gretna; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
She was predeceased by two daughters, Corene Callands and Argatha Poole; two sons, James Berger and Herman Berger; and three brothers, James Ervin, John Ervin and Dan Ervin.
The funeral will be held 12 noon Tuesday at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Tarpley officiating. Interment will follow in the Mount Olive Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family is at the residence of a daughter, Easter Wilson, 1807 Avondale Drive, Altavista.

Beatrice Royster Cunningham
SEMORA, N.C. - Beatrice Royster Cunningham, 85, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 3, 1917, she was a daughter of Walter and Gracie Royster.
She was a native of Caswell County and attended the public schools of Caswell. She was a member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons, David Cunningham of Danville and Herbert Cunningham of Semora, N.C.; seven daughters, Dorothy Graves of Danville, Isabelle Bailey of Milton, N.C., Iola Cunningham of the home,Mable McCain, Leona Person, Queen Rose and Carolina Cunningham, all of Maryland; three sisters, Rose Mae Williams of Burlington, N.C. and Cora Bumpass and Mae Fannie Crowley, both of Roxboro, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church with the Rev. P.D. Medley officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
There will be a viewing 12-8 p.m. Monday at the Plenty Funeral Home Chapel.

DANVILLE, Va. - Larry Garland, 50, of 103 Pleasant View Avenue, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002 at his residence.
Born Nov. 15, 1952, in South Boston, Va., he was the son of Robert David Traynham and Margaret Yvonne Garland.
He was a member of the Temple of Faith Apostolic Church.
He was married to Senora J. Garland.
In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by one daughter, Bernice Ann Jackson and one son, Ralpheal D. Jackson, both of Danville; six sisters, Barbara Jean Brown of Danville, Carolyn Clark, Evelyn Diane Clark and Deborah D. Lovelace, all of South Boston, Peggy Collazo of Germany and Cheryl Garland of Richmond, Va.; and one brother, Robert Lee Garland of Kenbridge, Va.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Jeffress Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Arthur Crews officiating. Interment will follow in the Rose Garden Cemetery.
Public viewing of the remains will be 1-5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Aubrey Willis Gourley
DANVILLE, Va. - Mr. Aubrey Willis Gourley of 227 Hamlin Avenue died Sunday, December 22, 2002 at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Before being admitted to the hospital he was a resident at Piney Forest Health Care Center and Outlook Pointe at Danville.
Mr. Gourley was born in Danville, Va. November 21, 1918, a son of the late Frederick Hamilton Gourley and Mary Hodges Gourley.
He was a member of the College Park Baptist Church since 1930 and former Intermediate Sunday School teacher, Secretary-Treasurer of The Allgood Class and Deacon Emeritus.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Navy in the fleet post office in Miami, FL and San Francisco, CA. Mr Gourley was a member of the American Legion Memorial Post #325 and was retired from Rush Wholesale as a bookkeeper. Mr. Gourley was married to Catherine Walton Gourley on August 23, 1940. Mrs. Gourley died January 26, 2002.
Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Alice Gourley of Danville; one granddaughter, Jennifer Gourley, Danville; one brother, Claude P. Gourley, Blairs;and two sisters, Agnes G. Conway, Painter, Va and Bernice G. Hardy, Ashland, Va.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 24, 2002 at 11 a.m. from College Park Baptist Church by the Reverend Dr. Gary Tucker and the Reverend Carl Berger. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park with full military honors being conducted by the American Legion Memorial Post #325.
The family will receive friends at College Park Baptist Church on Monday, December 23, 2002 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence of his son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Alice Gourley, 3106 Douglas Court, Blairmont Acres.
