Bessie Lemons Richardson
DANVILLE, Va. - Bessie Lemons Richardson, 92, formerly of 130 Howeland Circle, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born May 25, 1910, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of Issac Lemons and Annie Nolen Lemons.
She resided in Richmond for 40 years and had been a resident of Danville for the past 20 years. She was retired from Friedman and Marks Clothier in 1972. She was of the Presbyterian faith.
She was the last surviving member of her generation.She is survived by five nieces, Polly P. Fitts, Helen G. Ware, Virginia P. Martin, all of Danville, Nordis P. Ebel of Ferrum and Diane P. Kiser of Rocky Mount; and a nephew, Wray Ware of Danville.
She was predeceased by a son, Darrell Kent Richardson; three sisters, Lelia Golden, Ada Parris and Myrtle Prillaman; and five brothers, Leeland Lemons, Flemon Lemons, Charles Lemons, Tyler Lemons and George Lemons.
The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Prillaman Family Cemetery, Henry County, with the Rev. Ralph McCormack officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Friday at Townes Funeral Home.

Viola Owen Shelton
RINGGOLD, Va. - Viola Owen Shelton, 99, formerly of Tom Fork Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home in Danville.
Born June 10, 1903, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Jim Owen and Georgie Anna Crane Owen.
She was a homemaker and a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.
She was married to Elison Butler Shelton, who predeceased her Dec. 7, 1991.
She is survived by a son, Bernard B. Shelton Sr. of Danville; a brother, Richard Owen of Danville; four sisters, Irene O. Yeatts, Anna O. Hayden, both of Danville, Selma Murphy of Lynchburg and Janie Shields of Danville; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Alise S. Rowland; an infant son; four brothers and two sisters.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joe Bradford officiating. Interment will be in Oakland United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Barker Funeral Home and will at other times be at the residence of her granddaughter, Deborah Powell, 741 Melrose Ave., Danville.

Douglas Leon Thompson
DANVILLE, Va. - Douglas Leon Thompson, 87, of 116 Wimbish Place, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born July 26, 1915, in South Boston, he was the son of Ernest Thompson and Louise Farmer Thompson.
Prior to retirement, he was employed at Tultex, Inc.
He is survived by two daughters, Priscilla Majors and Sharon Adams, both of Danville; a son, Gregory Green of Danville; two sisters, Lillian Thompson of Jamaica Queens, N.Y. and Malinda Thompson of New York City, N.Y.; two brothers, James Thompson and Leroy Thompson, both of South Boston; three grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, South Boston, with the Rev. Haywood Jennings officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Garden Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his son, Gregory Greene, 116 Wimbish Place.

Mable Brown Turner
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Mable Brown Turner, of 6199 Badgett Sisters Parkway, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 14, 1925, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Scott Brown and Neve Moore Brown.
She was a member of Holy Faith Apostolic Holiness Church in Danville, Va. and was a former member of Graves Chapel Baptist Church in Yanceyville. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, James David Turner of the residence; two sons, David Turner and Douglas Turner, both of Yanceyville; a sister, Elizabeth Byrd of Columbus, Ohio; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Fulton Funeral Home with the Rev. Odell Walker officiating. Interment will be in Graves Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mary Lee Perkins Moore Yeatts
REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Mary Lee Perkins Moore Yeatts, 84, formerly of Narrow Gauge Road, left this earth to be with God on Wednesday, November 20, 2002. She had been in declining health for five years and had been a resident of Reidsville Rehabilitation and Care Center for the last four years.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, November 23, 2002 at Wilkerson Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Happy Home Congregational Christian Church Cemetery.
A native of Rockingham County, she had lived on Narrow Gauge Road most of her life. She was the daughter of the late John W. and Myrtle Evans Perkins. She retired from Blue Bell of Greensboro and was a member of Happy Home Congregational Christian Church. Before her debilitating strokes, she enjoyed good conversation, good food and the open road. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Jessie James "Deacon" Moore and Willard Aaron Yeatts; daughter, Shirley Moore; son, Jessie Lee "J.L." Moore; brother, Carl Perkins; sister, Frances Sapaugh; grandson, James Curtis Moore.
She is survived by daughters, Nita Dove of Reidsville and Virginia Adkins of Danville, VA; daughter-in-law, Marie Moore of Ruffin; brothers, Glen Perkins of Reidsville, Elvin Perkins and wife, Dara of Greensboro; sisters, Bessie Neighbors and husband Jack of Winston-Salem, Inez Phillips of Elon, NC, and Ruth McKinney of Roanoke, VA; grandchildren, Michelle Dove, Tasha Dove, David Moore, Donna Moore, Robin Seaman, Greg Adkins, Chris Adkins and Lisa Stewart, eleven great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home on Friday, Nov. 22, from 7 to 9 p.m. Other times the family will be at the respective homes.

WOODSTOCK, Ga. - Gladys Marie Stallings Payne Duncan, died April 28, 2002 at North Fulton Hospital in Roswell, Ga.
Born June 22, 1926 in Caswell County, N.C., she was a daughter of Alexander David "Nick" Stallings and Lottie Belle Durham Stallings.
She was first married to Ezra Payne, who predeceased her, and then to Willis J. Duncan, who survives. She was retired from Dan River Mills #3 Dress. She attended Timothy Lutheran Church in Woodstock, Ga.
Survivors, in addition to her second husband, include one daughter, Patricia Anne Payne Keller and her husband Karl of the residence; three sisters, Ethel Edmonds and Mary Boaze, both of Danville, Va. and Mabel Olivia "Libby" Thompson of Martinsville, Va.; six brothers, Percy Stallings, Leonard Stallings and James Otis Stallings, all of Danville, Va., Curtis "Joe" Stallings of Axton, Va., Fred Stallings of Yanceyville, N.C. and Ted Stallings of Blairs, Va.; one grandson, Don Keller and his wife Jami of Woodstock, Ga.; two granddaughters, Pamela Weishaar and her husband Bret of Woodstock, Ga. and Dawn Keller of the residence; and five great-grandchildren, Chelsey Hylton, Michael Weishaar, Bryan Weishaar, Alyson Keller, and Mathew Keller, all of Woodstock.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and first husband, by one daughter, Doris Marie Payne, one son, Anthony Ezra Payne, two sisters, Sadie Thompson and Stona Reid, and four brothers, Glenn Stallings, John Stallings, Clinton Stallings, and Luther Stallings.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, May 2, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. from the Swicegood Chapel by Pastor Joseph Polzin. Interment will be in Schoolfield Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday night from 7:30 until 8:30 p.m. and at other times at the residence of Mrs. Duncan's niece, Betty Jean and Donald Campbell, 472 Conifer Drive, Danville, Va.

RINGGOLD, Va. – Karen Sue Wilson Foster, 49, of 212 Mountain Hill Road, died Sunday morning, April 28, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for several months.
Born May 29, 1952 in Martinsville, Va., she was a daughter of Early Melvin Wilson, who predeceased her, and Eva Wilson Holt, who survives.
She was married on July 28, 1979 to Horace Lee Foster, who survives. She was a relief worker at Piedmont Mills, Memorial Drive Division.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence and mother, include one son, Jason Dane Farmer of Axton, Va.; one daughter, Danielle Foster of Danville, Va.; one daughter-in-law, Amy Farmer of Axton, Va.; one sister, Shirley Wilson of Collinsville, Va.; one niece, Terri Lynn Hansen of Powell, Tenn.; one stepfather, Rakin Holt of Ridgeway, Va.; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, 2002 at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Darryl Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

DANVILLE, Va. - Alonza MacArthur "Butch" Jones, 58, of 500 Bradley Road, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002 at the Health and Rehabilitation Center in Salem.
Born January 2, 1944 in Danville, he was a son of Issac and Lillie Tunstall Jones.
He was a member of Pentecostal United Holiness Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Phyllis Jane Dixon of Danville; one sister, Evangelist Shirley Bobbitt of Danville; and five brothers, Roy Jones, George Jones, Burnell Jones and the Rev. William Jones, all of Danville, and Issac Jones Jr. of Troy, N.Y.
The funeral was held at 1 p.m. Monday at L.H. Brooks & Bros with the Rev. Stanley White officiating. Interment followed at Oak Hill Cemetery.
The viewing was held from 2-8 p.m. Sunday at L.H. Brooks & Bros. Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 2117 N. Main St.

Lee Manning
DANVILLE, Va. – Lee R. Manning, of 115 Fairmont Circle, died Sunday morning, April 28, 2002, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
He was born on June 28, 1921, in Bethel, N.C. a son of the late Jesse L. Manning and Lydia Smith Manning.
Mr. Manning was married to the former Miss Lois Tetterton, who survives.
He was a graduate of Duke University, and was a United States Army Veteran of World War II.
Mr. Manning was a member of the First Baptist Church. He was a retired Certified Public Accountant with Manning, Perkinson and Floyd.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Vernon Manning and Charles Manning.
Mr. Manning is survived by his wife, Lois Tetterton Manning of the home; a son, William D. Manning of Ringgold, Va.; a daughter, Shirley M. Powell and her husband, J. C. of Brosville, Va.; three grandchildren, Drew Dillon of Brosville, Va., Justin Manning and Kaitlyn Manning, both of Ringgold, Va.; a brother, Carl Manning of Bethel, N.C.; three sisters, Earline Knox of Robersonville, N.C., Jessie Mae Shephard of Tallahassee, Fla. and Joyce Rouse of Bethel, N.C.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday morning, April 30, 2002 at 11:00 o'clock at Highland Burial Park with Joey Faucette officiating and Mack Stewart, soloist.

DANVILLE, Va. - Elizabeth "Liz" Jennings Presley, 46, of 21 Glen Oak Drive, died Sunday, April 28, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 20, 1956 in Danville, she was a daughter of Perry W. Jennings and Clara Hughes Jennings, who both survive.
She lived most of her life in Danville and was employed as a unit secretary in the critical care unit of Danville Regional Medical Center.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include one son, Wayne Presley Jr. of the residence; two daughters, Alicia Ann Presley and Audrey Renee Presley, both of the residence; and two sisters, Lynette Jennings Fernatt of Roanoke and Sarah Jennings Appelt of Montpelier.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Michael Pressley officiating. Interment will follow at Schoolfield Cemetery.

DANVILLE, Va. - Jerle Junior Wilson, 69, of 1888 Fall Creek Drive, died Friday, April 26, 2002 at the Riverside Health Care Center.
Born July 7, 1932 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Charlie Wilson and Ester Mae Wilson.
He was married to Alberta Wilson, who survives. He was a shipper at Goodyear Tire Company until his retirement.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Leroy J. Wilson of Dale City and Ricky L. Wilson of Danville; three daughters, Nancy Logan, Patsy Pritchett and Jacqueline Stephens, all of Danville; four brothers, Jack Wilson of Blairs, Clarence Wilson and Ernest Wilson, both of Danville, and Wilmer Wilson of Manassas; four sisters, Dorothy Craig of Pittsburgh, Pa., Irene Fitzgerald of Danville, Carolyn Bradshaw of Collinsville, and Pearl Pannell of Salem; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bibleway Cathedral on Grant Street with Apostle L. G. Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

Roy Lee Atkinson
CHATHAM, Va. - Roy Lee Atkinson, 79, of 14329 U.S. Hwy. 29, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at his residence.
Born March 25, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Ernest B. and Maude Keesee Atkinson.
He retired from Hertz Penske with 20 years of service. He was a member and Deacon of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church and served on various committees. He was a charter member of Mt. Hermon Volunteer Fire Department and served in the army during World War II.
On Jan. 6, 1945, he married Helen A. Atkinson, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Phyllis A. Robinson of Charleston, S.C.; three sons, Charles W. Atkinson of Spring Garden, Johnny D. Atkinson of Danville and Larry T. Atkinson of Ringgold; a sister, Jean A. Chamblin of Chatham; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Doris A. Harris and a brother, E.B. Atkinson.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Davidson officiating. Interment will be at Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors by American Legion Post 1097.
The family received friends 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Herman Baptist Church and at other times will be at the residence.

Phillip 'Fred' Loyad Inman
CASCADE, Va. - Phillip "Fred" Loyad Inman, 60, of 611 Long Circle, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 20, 1942, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of William Henry Inman and Mary Eunice McVey Inman.
He was born in the Brosville community of Pittsylvania County, where he lived most of his life. He attended Brosville High School and worked at Dan River, Inc. in the Reed Dept. for a number of years until he retired on disability in 1995. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was married to Deborah Dalton Inman, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by a daughter, Dianne Inman Jackson of Ringgold; a sister, Choloe Inman Eanes of Brosville; a brother, the Rev. Hubert Inman of Pelham, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Phillip Loyad Inman Jr., three brothers and one sister.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Hubert Inman and the Rev. Gilmore Hundley officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
