Charlie Townes

JAVA, Va. - Charlie L. Townes, 79, of 1000 Java Road, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at the residence.

Born June 2, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Jim and Pearlena Townes.

He was married to Helen Luck Townes, who predeceased him. He was a member of Shockoe Baptist Church, the Male Chorus, Deacon Board, Usher Board, and Senior Choir. He was a member of Shockoe Masonic Lodge 244, a lifetime member of the NAACP, a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a retired farmer.

Survivors include three sons, John Townes, Daniel Townes, and David Townes, all of Java; three daughers, Ella T. Miller, Delois T. Guy, and Lorine T. Stone, all of Java; three sisters, Durcilla Kates of Chatham, Josephine Kates, and Margaret Stewart, both of Newark, N.J.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Shockoe Baptist Church with the Rev. Kevin McNeill officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

The viewing will be held 4-7 p.m. Friday at Howerton Funeral Home and the family will be at the residence.

Howerton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jalvia Vaughn

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Jalvia Bigelow Vaughn, 54, of 94 Henry T. Graves Road, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center in Danville, Va.

Born Nov. 24, 1947, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Tom Bigelow Jr., who survives, and Bettie M. Graves.

She was married to James Edward Vaughn, who survives. She was a member of Graves Chapel Baptist Church where she was a member of the Missionary Circle, Gospel Choir, Pastors Aid Committee, and Sunday School teacher. She was employed at Alamance Community College as an instructor in early childhood development prior to her disability.

Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence and father of Yanceyville; include one daughter, Shelia Vaughn Graves of Reidsville; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; five brothers, Guaterricker Bill Bigelow of Green Level, Tubby Bigelow of Mebane, Thaddeus Bigelow, Alvin Leon Bigelow, and Donnie Bigelow, all of Yanceyville; four sisters, Gloria Turner, Annie Wiley, and Cecil Sellars, all of Yanceyville, and Sallie Watlington of Elon.

She was predeceased by one son, James Leroy Vaughn; and one brother, Eddie Jr. Bigelow.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Graves Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Walker officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Graves Chapel and other times will be at the residence.

Sherman Williamson Jr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Sherman Williamson Jr., 50, of 1111 N. Main St. is survived by two brothers, Frederick Williamson of Danville, and Wendell Williamson of Washington, D.C.; and one sister, Delores Robinson of Danville.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Cunningham and Hughes Memorial chapel with the Rev. Henry Anderson officiating. Interment will follow at Crooktown Cemetery.

The viewing will be held 4-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and the family will be at 142 Delta Road.

Cunningham and Hughes Funeral directors are in charge of arrangements.

Irene Brown Clay

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Irene Brown Clay, 87, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at The Woodview.

Born Feb. 10, 1915, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of James Robert Brown and Carie Peade Brown.

She was married to Howard C. Clay and was a member of Centerville Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sons, Artie Clay of Danville and Emmett Clay of Alton; two daughters, Annie Mae Bowen of Virgilina and Jean C. Dunnaway of South Boston; two sisters, Clarkie Henderson of Burlington, N.C. and Adell Gainey of Mebane, N.C.; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Oak Ridge Cemetery with Rev. Richard Saunders officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home.

Margie Lovelace Doss

PENHOOK, Va. - Margie Lovelace Doss, age 73, of 469 Locust Lane, Penhook, died after a long illness, Tuesday, August 20, 2002 at Lewis-Gale Medical Center, Salem.

Born November 2, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was a daughter of the late David Nathaniel Lovelace and Doherta Pickeral Lovelace. Margie was predeceased by her loving husband Wallace E. Doss. She was a member of Penhook United Methodist Church, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, a fifty year member of Gretna Chapter 118 Order of the Easter Star and was the former owner of Doss Tax Service.

She is survived by three sons, Carlton Doss and his fiancee, Anita Kirkey of Aiken, S.C., Randy Doss and his wife Debra of Cascade, Calvin "Bunky" Doss and his wife Terri of Gretna; three brothers, Richard "Dick" Lovelace and his wife Ruby of Penhook, David Lovelace and his wife Jeanette of Gretna and Randall Lovelace and his wife Darlene of Wallace, S.C.; two sisters, Frances Tunkel of Lynchburg and Alice Brumfield of Altavista; three grandsons, Jared Doss, Nathan Doss and Pearson Doss; a step-granddaughter, Michelle Whitley; a special friend, John Hart.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 22, 2002, at the Colbert-Moran Chapel by Rev. R.G. Rowland and Rev. Judith Short. Interment will follow in Gretna Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence of her son and daughter-in-law, Bunky and Terri Doss, 106 West Watts Street, Gretna.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to their favorite charity.

Franklin Leon Haywood Sr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Franklin Leon Haywood Sr., 82, of 4209 Horseshoe Road, died Sunday, August 18, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center after being hospitalized for twelve days.

Born October 25, 1919, in Danville, he was the son of the late William Franklin Haywood and Berta Jane Scearce Haywood.

He was married to Janice McNeely Haywood on February 6, 1943.

He was a member of West End Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where he was a member of the New Hope Bible Class. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, a member of the Air Force Association, a former member of the American Legion, a member of the Puritans Club and a member of the 246 Coast Artillery Breakfast Club.

His legal address was Danville, Va. but his career in the Air Force led him all over the United States and abroad. He was retired from the United States Air Force as a Senior Master Sergeant. He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Air Force in WWII and the Vietnam War. He served in Iwo Jima, French Morocco, Africa, Germany, England, Goosebay, Laborador, Bangkok, Thailand, where he was a Contract Maintenance Officer, and Vietnam. He was a very patriotic man that loved and served his God and Country.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by one daughter, Brenda Carole H. Parrott and her husband, John of Danville; one son, Franklin Leon Haywood Jr. and his wife, Alpha Dean of Danville; seven grandchildren, Jimmy Arnold, Bart Arnold, Matthew Arnold, John Fortner Jr., Franklin Fortner, Vanessa Haywood and Rebecca Jones; and one great-grandchild, Elizabeth Fisher Jones.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Garland L. Haywood and Raymond L. Haywood; and one sister, Eleanor L. Abernathy.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 21 at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with Reverend June Haislip and Reverend Dana Hunt officiating. Interment will follow in the McNeely Family Cemetery in Callands with military honors by Seymore-Johnson Air Force Base Honor Guard.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence.

William Burnett Hazelwood

SOUTH HILL, Va. - William Burnett Hazelwood, 71, of Northview Adult Home, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002 at Community Memorial Healthcenter.

Born Oct. 17, 1930, in Halifax County, he was the son of Thomas Watkins Hazelwood and Christine Powell Hazelwood.

He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by two sisters, Catherine H. Smith of Virgilina and Frances H. Conner of Glen Allen.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Rev. Jeff Jones officiating.

The family received friends 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home.

Jerry Wayne Mims

KEELING, Va. - Jerry Wayne Mims, 46, of 380 Blair Lane, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at his residence.

Born Dec. 7, 1955, in Danville, he was the son of George Wesley Mims Sr. and Myrtle Gregory Mims.

He lived in Keeling for the past twenty five years and had served three years with the U.S. Navy. He was shop foreman for Jarrett Welding Company where he worked for fifteen years. He was a member of Keeling Baptist church and also a member of American Legion Post 325.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Robin Walker Mims; one daughter, Carey Hancock of Danville; three sisters, Shirley M. Pleasant of Danville, Donna Giles of Chatham and Brenda M. Self of Greensboro, N.C.; two brothers, George Ray Mims of Germany and George Wesley Mims Jr. of Danville; and two grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one brother, Calvin Mims.

The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with Rev. Tom Bailey officiating. Interment will follow with military honors by American Legion Memorial Post 325 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Irvin N. Prunty

DANVILLE, Va. - Irvin N. Prunty, 73, of 620 Sugar Tree Church Road, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, in Riverside Health Care Center.

Born July 10, 1929, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John H. Prunty, who predeceased him, and Mary Witcher Prunty.

He was employed by Stanley Furniture Company, Stanleytown, as a yardsman and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Myrtle G. Prunty of Lynchburg; three daughters, Dalphine Minter, Gwendolyn Davis, both of Gretna and Connie Carter of Chatham; five sons, Robert Carter of Chatham, Andy Carter of Martinsville, Dwight Carter of Bassett, Dennis Carter of Waverly and Andrew Carter of Maryland; four sisters, Barbara Wilson of Danville, Gracie Frances Adkins of Cascade, Margaret Day of Callands and Stella Louise Prunty of Charlottesville; three brothers, Willie Lee Prunty, Frank Prunty and Thurmond Prunty, all of Chatham; eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Watson Level Baptist Church with Rev. Katie L. McKenzie officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 3-7 p.m. Friday at Miller Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Mary Louise Rhodes

RINGGOLD, Va. - Mary Louise Rhodes, 83, of 3710 Tom Fork Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center after declining in health for eighteen months.

Born Jan. 26, 1919, in Mangola, Ill., she was the daughter of Edward C. Rhodes and Mary Sprague Rhodes.

She lived in Bradenton, Fla. prior to moving to Danville. She was graduate of the Practical Bible Training School and served as a missionary with the Baptist Mid Missions in Grethel, Kentucky, Liberia, Africa and Washington, D.C. She last served in Madison, Ga. with the Source of Light Ministries until her retirement. She was a member of North Main Baptist Church.

She is survived by three sisters, Marlee Bowen of N.Y., Noi Schrekengost of Ga. and Mildred Blumenstock of Fla.; and one brother, Russell Rhodes of Fla.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Honor Sleight, Blanche Sleight and Ruby Rhodes; and one brother, Norris Rhodes.

The graveside funeral will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with Rev. Jack Noble officiating. Interment will follow.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Jack and Rhonda Noble, 3710 Tom Fork Road.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Good News Jail Ministries.

Barbara Ann Aiken Hale

DANVILLE, Va. - Barbara Ann Aiken Hale, 68, of 92 Bishop Ave., died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003 in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born July 16, 1934, in Greenville, S.C., she was the daughter of Frances J. Aiken Sr. and Evelyn Aiken Byers.

She was active in childcare and was a member of North Main Baptist Church.

She was married to William Ray Hale.

In addition to her husband, of the residence, she is survived by three daughters, Luanne Chalmers of Greenwood, S.C., Susan Portwood of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Toni Moye of Danville; three sons, Danny Hale, Larry Hale and Bobby Hale, all of Woolwine; three brothers, William Robert Aiken of Anderson, S.C., Thomas Henry Aiken and Daniel Arthur Aiken, both of Danville; one sister, Frances Aiken Martti of Greensboro, N.C.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by her stepmother, Fannie Bell Turner Aiken and one brother, Frances James Aiken Jr.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday from Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Ted Manning officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Monday at Townes Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the residence.

Essie Smith Haraway

DANVILLE, Va. - Essie Smith Haraway, 55, of 1317B Jones Road, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003 as the result of an automobile accident.

Born June 27, 1947, in Danville, she was the daughter of Wheeler Smith, who is deceased, and Lucille Southern Smith, who survives.

She attended Christian Fellowship Assembly. She was manager of GNC in Piedmont Mall.

She was married to Kenneth W. Haraway on Aug. 7, 1971.

In addition to her husband, of the residence, and her mother, she is survived by one son, Jonathan Haraway of the residence; three daughters, Joy Haraway of the residence, Hope Wells of Danville and Charity Haraway of St. Louis, MO; two sisters, Blondie Dix of Gibsonville, N.C. and Jolanda Clayton of Danville; and one grandchild.

The graveside service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. View Cemetery with the Rev. Bruce Morgan officiating.

The family will receive friends at the home of W. B. Bridgen Jr., 1720 Buckhorn Road.

Mary Lee Martin

DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Lee Martin, 87, formerly of 230 North Woodberry Ave., died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003 in Piedmont Geriatric Hospital in Burkeville.

Born Jan. 11, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Claude Hunter Martin and Lottie Collins Martin, who both predeceased her.

She attended Pittsylvania County schools and was a graduate of Averett College and Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia. She taught in the public schools of Virginia for a number of years. She also taught one year at Ferrum College and seven years at Averett College.

She was a former member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, where she was a pianist for a number of years. She also was a member and past president of the Mt. Hermon Woman's Club.

At the time of her death and for a number of years, she was a member of the Lighthouse Independent Methodist Church on Woodberry Drive, Danville. She was a member and past regular of the Joseph Gravely Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the Anne Eliza Johns Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

She is survived by one sister, Frances Martin Taylor of Danville; one brother, Claude H. Martin Jr. of Danville; one niece, three nephews, two great nieces and one great nephew.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by one brother, John C. Martin.

The graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Joey Faucette officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday in the Azalea Room at the Stratford House. At other times they will be at the residence of Frances M. Taylor, Stratford House, Apt. 304.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541 or the American Bible Society, 1865 Broadway, New York, NY 10023-7505.
