Mabel Reed Nelson
DANVILLE, Va. - Mabel Reed Nelson, 87, of 928 Old Mayfield Road, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003 in Piney Forest Health Care Center, after being in declining health for the past two years and in the nursing home for the past year.
Born July 26, 1915, in Galax, she was the daughter of James Allen Reed and Ally Sturgall Reed, who predeceased her.
She lived in Pelham, N.C. for most of her life and lived on Old Mayfield Road for one year.
She worked for Dan River, Inc. in the #2 Spinning Room.
She was a member of Gatewood Baptist Church, sang in the choir and was a member of the Lady's Circle.
She married Lee Nelson on June 6, 1946. He predeceased her May 13, 1990.
She is survived by one daughter, Lois N. Hatcher of Danville; two sons, Lester "Dickie" Smathers of Colonial Heights and Joel "Butch" Smathers of Greensboro, N.C.; one sister, Norma Reed Smith of Danville; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by one grandson, three brothers and seven sisters.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. David Hatcher and the Rev. Johnny Gentry officiating. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the residence.

Sarah P. Warren
IVOR, Va. - Sister Sarah P. Warren, 85, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003 in Danville Regional Hospital.
Born April 3, 1916, in Southhampton County, she was the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth Parker.
She attended Hayden High School in Franklin.
She pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education at Virginia State University, Petersburg.
She was a member of the St. Luke United Church of Christ. She was a Sunday School teacher, choir member, church clerk, and member of the missionary circle. She later joined Gilfield Baptist Church.
She was an educator with Southhampton and Surry counties. She was known as a dedicated teacher. She loved working with young children and later retired from the Surry County Public Schools.
She was married to William H. Warren, who predeceased her.
She is survived by one daughter, Vernetta W. Hairston of Cascade; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild and one sister, Mary P. Johnson of Washington, D.C.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Gilfield Baptist Church in Ivor. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Lola Jones Bowes
LEASBURG, N.C. - Lola Jones Bowes, 53, of 3425 N.C. Hwy. 119 North, Leasburg, N.C., died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at Raleigh Community Hospital, Raleigh, N.C.
She was born May 17, 1949, in Spartanburg, S.C., the daughter of Blanche E. Jones and Allen Earl Jones.
Lola was a faithful and active member of Beulah Baptist Church in Leasburg, N.C. She loved working in her church and community. She was also an active supporter of the American Cancer Drive. Lola was retired from Crown Craft.
Lola is survived by her husband, William Lonnie Bowes of the home. Other survivors include: two daughters, Karen Elaine Bowes of the residence and Jennifer B. Potter of Garner, N.C.; one brother, Pat Jones and spouse, Vicki; a sister-in-law, Karen Curl and spouse, Mike; one brother-in-law, Neal Bowes and spouse, Phyllis; three grandchildren, Rebekah Potter, Joseph Potter and David Potter.
Lola was predeceased by a brother, Mike Jones.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Beulah Baptist Church with the Rev. Doug Jones and Buddy Hall officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday from 6-8 p.m. at Beulah Baptist Church, at other times the family will be at the residence.

James Garfield Brown
MORRISTOWN, N.J. - James Garfield Brown, 64, of 15 Hazel St., died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003.
Born June 27, 1938, in Caswell County, N.C., he was the son of Wilson Brown and Matoka Williamson Brown.
He joined Blackwell Missionary Baptist Church at an early age.
He is survived by a son, James Gregory Brown of Florida; a daughter, Lisa Brown of Wilmington, Del.; two sisters, Mae Francis Mayo of Morristown and Susie B. Withers of Yanceyville, N.C. and five grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Beverly Brown; a brother, Eddie Brown and a sister, Elizabeth Harris.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Blackwell Baptist Church with the Rev. Everett Dickerson officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Fulton Funeral Home Chapel.

Renee Marvine Dodson
IRVINGTON, N.J. - Renee Marvine Dodson, 27, of 52-A Paine Ave., Apt. 7, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, as a result of complications from surgery.
Born Jan. 12, 1976, in Orange, N.J., she was a daughter of Sarah Rodgers-Dodson, who survives. She was the granddaughter of Willie and Louise Rodgers.
She attended St. Joseph Grammar School of East Orange and Union Catholic High School of Scotch Plains and was employed with the East Orange Veterans Administration. She graduated from Essex County College and the McEllis Training Institute of Orange and was employed at Valley National Bank as a Customer Service Representative for four years. In August 2002, she was employed as an Operations Administrator with Mellon Financial Corporation.
In addition to her mother and father, Frank, of Irvington, N.J., she is survived by a brother, Russ and a sister, Yakisha.
The funeral will be held noon Monday at the Chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home, Danville, Va. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens, Danville, Va.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral at the chapel.

Marjorie Jones Elder
DANVILLE, Va. - Marjorie Jones Elder, 69, of 500 North Pointe Lane, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 10, 1933, in Danville, she was the daughter of Ethel Jones.
She was a retired employee of Dimon Tobacco Company. She attended Christian Life Baptist Church.
She was married to Cornelius Elder, who predeceased her.
She is survived by a daughter, Audrey Trent of Danville; four grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Christian Life Baptist Church with the Rev. Cecil Bridgeforth Sr. officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Josephine Ingram Elliott
DANVILLE, Va. - Josephine Ingram Elliott, 88, of 135 Clarkson St., died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health and one week in the hospital.
Born Feb. 20, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Green Monroe Ingram and Martha Elizabeth Hopkins Ingram.
She lived her entire life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County areas. She was a charter member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was a homemaker and provided child care in her home for over 30 years.
She was the last surviving member of her generation.
She married Eggleston Carlyle Elliott Sr. on Oct. 19, 1935. He predeceased her in February 1952.
She is survived by two sons, Eggleston Carlyle "E.C." Elliott Jr. of Danville and Jerry Lea Elliott Sr. of Sanford, N.C.; a daughter, LaVera Elliott Emerson of Dry Fork; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three step grandchildren and one step great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by a son, Paul T. Elliott; a stepson, Calvin Elliott; two stepdaughters, Florence Betterton and Marie Cox; four sisters, Bessie Ingram Ricketts, Margaret Ingram Herndon, Hattie Ingram Gilbert and Susan Alice Ingram and five brothers, Homer Ingram, Everett W. Ingram, G. Carroll Ingram, James Monroe Ingram and Ernest Ingram.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with Pastor James Ward Jr. and the Rev. Earl Cox Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Annie B. Long Jeffreys Freeman
CHESTER, Pa. - Annie B. Long Jeffreys Freeman, 80, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Taylor Hospital.
Born Nov. 12, 1923, she was a daughter of Henry Clay Long and Lillie Long.
She is survived by her husband, Raphael Freeman of Chester; two sons, Richard W. Jeffreys of Danville, Va. and Leroy Jeffreys of Axton, Va.; five stepsons, Larry Freeman, Gregory Freeman, Marion Freeman, Michael Freeman and Mark Freeman, all of Chester; a stepdaughter, Teresa F. Nowell of Chester; five grandchildren and 10 step grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at High Street Baptist Church, Milton, N.C., with the Rev. Kitty Blackwell officiating. Interment will be in Macedonia A.M.E. Church Cemetery.

Charles E. Groff
COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. - Charles E. Groff, 64, of Church Road, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg.
He was the son of the late Charles Wade Groff.
He was a retired Special Agent with the Virginia State Police and was a member of the Virginia State Police Association and Alumni. Mr. Groff was a member of the Living Stone Baptist Church in Dinwiddie.
He is survived by his wife, Betty C. Groff of Colonial Heights; children, Michael Groff and his wife, Beth, of Colonial Heights, Sharon King and husband, Tracy, of Dinwiddie; five grandchildren, Nicholas, Trevor, Christopher, Megan and Kerry. Mr. Groff is also survived by his mother, Garnett Groff, brothers and sisters-in-law, Ronald and Loretta Groff of Washington State, Matthew and Joyce Groff of North Carolina, along with numerous nieces, nephews and special friends.
A funeral service will be held 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, in the chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights with the Rev. Carl (Charlie) Weaver officiating. Interment to follow at Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George.

Elizabeth Schreutelkamp Huyser
CHATHAM, Va. - Elizabeth Schreutelkamp Huyser, 66, of 11576 Franklin Turnpike, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center after nine months of declining health.
Born June 9, 1936, in Rotterdam, Holland, she was a daughter of Johannes Schreutelkamp and Elizabeth Berendrecht Schreutelkamp, both deceased.
Mrs. Huyser moved to the Chatham area with her family from New Jersey in the early 1990s. Mrs. Huyser was a dedicated homemaker and was employed for a period of time as a lab inspector at Continental Can Company and she served as president of the international Union AFL-CIO-CLC Local GMP, Piscataway New Jersey.
She married Stephanus Wilhelmus Huyser Sr. on Nov. 7, 1956.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Eleonora "Ellen" Handerhan and her husband, Dennis R. Handerhan, of Florida and Barbara "Diane" Lucia and her husband, Kim A. Lucia, of Danville; two sons, Robert William Huyser of California and Stephanus Huyser Jr. of New Hampshire; three brothers, Karel L. Schreutelkamp of Belgium, Herman L. Rozing III and Everardes Rozing, both of New Jersey; two sisters, Gertrude Van Vliet of New Jersey and Francisca P. Higson of Florida; and five grandchildren, Jeremy M. Lucia, Joshua K. Lucia, Sean R. Handerhan, Shannon A. Lucia and Kelly E. Handerhan.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb 1, 2003, at the home of her daughter, Barbara "Diane" Lucia, 813 Corn Tassle Road, Danville, with the Reverend Louis F. Emerson officiating.
The family will receive friends Friday at the residence and will also be at the residence at other times.

George Everett Jones Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - George Everett Jones Sr., 76, of 800 Westview Drive, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at Riverside Health Care Center after six months of declining health. He had lived at the center since Nov. 11, 2002.
Born March 11, 1926, in Salem, he was a son of William Lee Jones and Nora Burton Jones.
He moved to Danville from Roanoke in 1969. He retired from Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company after 44 years of service where he worked as a Production Manager. After his retirement, he worked part time with Bryant Restaurant Equipment Company and with Commodore Homes. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II. He was of the Christian faith.
He married Bettie Robertson Jones on Sept. 3, 1949.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by a son, George E. Jones Jr. of Danville; two daughters, Sherry J. Bullington of Ringgold and Leslie J. Fisher of Danville; two brothers, Roy Jones and Robert Jones, both of Salem; a sister, Leslie J. Harris of Norfolk; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The graveside funeral will be held 4 p.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Lewis Harris officiating.
