GRETNA, Va. - Ruth Lewis Coles, 88, died Thursday, May 2, 2002, at Roman Eagle Nursing Home.
Born July 13, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Charlie Walton and Lillie Ward Walton.
She was first married to Eddie Lewis, who predeceased her, and later married Henry Coles, who also predeceased her. She was employed at Cross Roads Restaurant and by Mr. and Mrs. Edward Edmunds of Gretna, prior to her retirement. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she was a member of the senior choir and was a member of the former Northside Home Demonstration Club and Eastern Star.
Survivors include one son, Wayne Lewis of Hurt; one sister, Adele Moon of Roanoke; one brother, Monroe Walton of Maryland; ten stepdaughters, Nannie Hughes of Washington, D.C., Frances Wagstaff of Roxboro, N.C., Pearl Greene, Lillian Greene, and Gracie Thompson, all of Norwalk, Conn., Marie Thomas, and Frances Hester, both of Washington, D.C., Lorraine Simpson and Delores Brown, both of Suitlane, Md., and Jeraldine Coles of Los Angeles; three stepsons, Richard Lewis of Philadelphia, Lafayette Coles of New Jersey, and Edward Coles of Charlotte, N.C.; one grandson; and one great-granddaughter.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Frances Carter, and Emma Gilbert; and four brothers, Gene, Charlie, Raleigh, and William Walton.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Burnett Clark officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Baptist Church cemetery.
The viewing will be held 3-7 p.m. Sunday at Miller Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence of Nancy Miller, 114 Terry Lane in Hurt.

John Daniel
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - John Leigh Daniel, 40, died at 2:02 p.m. May 2, 2002, at Fruit of the Loom.
Born in Danville, he was the son of Charles Leigh Daniel, of Martinsville, and Alice W. Dunn, of Tampa, Fla., who survive.
He was married to Terry Smith Daniel, of Bowling Green, who survives. He was the director of contract business for Fruit of the Loom. He was a member of Hillvue Heights Church and Virginia Tech Alumni.
Survivors include one son, Charles Blake Daniel of Bowling Green; two daughters, Ashley Nicole Daniel, and Victoria Bailey Daniel, both of Bowling Green; three sisters, Theresa Norton of Collinsville, Va., Sherri Coleman, and Susan Koger, both of Martinsville; and one half-brother, Steven Todd Ramsey of Roanoke.
He was predeceased by one daughter, Leigh Ann Daniel.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at J.C. Kirby and Son Lovers Lane Chapel in Bowling Green and 2 p.m. Tuesday at McCabe Baptist Church in Martinsville. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Ridgeway, Va.

Frances Lewis
DANVILLE, Va. - Frances Hall Lewis, 73, of Piney Forest Health Care Center, formerly of Ireson Street, died Thursday, May 2, 2002, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Sept. 4, 1928, in Eden, N.C., she was the daughter of Robert Daniel Hall and Lucy Saunders Hall.
She was married to Ernest C. Lewis, who predeceased her May 10, 1991. She lived most of her life in Danville where she worked as a cook at the Chicken Cafe. She was a resident of Piney Forest Health Care for the past three months and prior to that she had lived 15 months with her daughter in Richmond.
Survivors include one son, Robert Carl Lewis of North Carolina; one daughter, Brenda Kaye Lewis Batkins of Richmond; six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 4 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Chapel with Pastor Steve Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

Irene Lumpkins
GRETNA, Va. - Irene Brumfield Lumpkins, 91, of 460 Summersett Road, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 19, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of James Morgan Brumfield and Cecil Vereka Dove Brumfield.
She was married to George Alexander "Landon" Lumpkins, who predeceased her. She was a retired clerk with Peoples Drug and was a member of Summersett Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Nathan W. Lumpkins of Danville and Rodger S. Lumpkins of Phoenix; two daughters, Joan Knowles of Martinsville and Carol Boan of Upper Marlboro, Md.; one brother, Carson Brumfield of Pittsville; two sisters, Mable Adams and Doris Adams, both of Gretna; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by two sons, Donald R. Lumpkins and George Alexander Lumpkins Jr.; seven brothers, Elmo Brumfield, George Brumfield, John Brumfield, Otis Brumfield, Bernard Brumfield, Ira Brumfield and Paul Brumfield; and two sisters, Liona Adams and Ruby Shelton.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Summersett Baptist Church with the Rev. Bert Johnson and the Rev. Lynn E. Lloyd officiating. Interment will follow at Weatherford Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

George Gibbs
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - George Morgan Gibbs, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002.
Born Nov. 9, 1923, in Danville, he was the son of George W. Gibbs and Irma T. Brashear.
He was married to Nancy Hall Gibbs, who survives, and later married Marian C. Gibbs, who survives. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as radarman on the Sam Clemente, flagship of the 7th fleet. He graduated from the College of William and Mary, Class of 1949. He received his Masters in Education from the University of Virginia.
He moved to Williamsburg after retiring in 1979 after 33 years with the Virginia public school system as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal coordinator of curriculum K-12, adult education director and supervisor of special projects.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one daughter, Cheryl Gibbs; one son, Randolph M. Gibbs; one stepson, Gary L. Cowling; one granddaughter; and two great-grandsons.
He was predeceased, in addition to his first wife and parents, by his stepfather, Alfred Brashear.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Williamsburg Memorial Park.

Virginia Perry
DANVILLE, Va. - Virginia Dillon Perry, 91, of 1473 Myrtle Ave., died 11:10 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born May 23, 1911, in North Carolina, she was the daughter of George Dillon and Sarah Miller Dillon.
She was married to Ralph Lee Perry, who predeceased her. She was a member of Third Avenue Christian Church and had worked for Danville Knitting Mills.
Survivors include one daughter, Jean P. Lovelace of Richmond; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by two brothers, Harold T. Dillon and Frank S. Dillon; and one sister, Mildred D. Hanks.
The graveside service will be held noon Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Freddy Vicks officiating.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home, 2025 North Main St. and at other times will be at the residence.

Susan Anderson
AMHURST, Va. - Susan Hughes Anderson, 39, of 173 Brockman Park Drive, died June 27, 2002, at Lynchburg General Hospital following five years of declining health and four weeks in the hospital.
Born Aug. 9, 1962, in Danville, she was the daughter of George Alfred Anderson, who survives, and the late Dorothy Hundley Anderson.
She had lived in Danville prior to moving to Lynchburg in 1983. She taught in the Campbell County school system for 10 years prior to her decline in health. She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her father of Sutherlin, survivors include her stepmother, Sandra S. Anderson of Sutherlin; two sisters, Cynthia G. Anderson and Lisa A. Moore, both of Lynchburg; and one brother, A. Michael Wilson of Nashville, Tenn.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Phill Duckett officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Harold Brogden
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Harold Bradcher Brogden, 72, of 1404 Moore St., died Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at VA Hospital in Salem.
Born March 27, 1930, in Granville County, N.C., he was the son of Early P. Brogden and Mary Bell Cash Brogden.
He was married to Ophelia Wilson Brogden, who survives. He was a retired truck driver for A.E. Morris and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of Florence Avenue Baptist Church. He was a member of American Legion Post 8, Disabled Veterans, a former member of Virgilina Volunteer Fire Department and the South Boston-Halifax County Museum.
In addition to his wife of South Boston, survivors include one daughter, Joy Brogden Butler of South Boston; one son, Ricky A. Brogden of South Boston; one sister, Margaret Humphries of Oxford, N.C.; and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Florence Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. John Eure and the Rev. Leslie Puryear officiating. Interment will follow at Virgilina Cemetery.

Barbara B. Bryant
GRETNA, Va. - Barbara Boaze Bryant, age 74, of Gretna died Thursday, June 27, 2002 at Gretna Health Care Center.
Born November 10, 1927 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Russell S. Boaze and Mary Payne Boaze.
She was married to Melvin R. Bryant, who predeceased her. She was retired from the Pittsylvania County Schools and was a member of Greenbay Christian Church.
She is survived by two sons, Mark Bryant of Dry Fork and Marvin Bryant of Chatham; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Greenbay Christian Church with Minister Rudy A. Hearn officiating. Interment will follow at Gretna Burial Park.

Delores Lester Hogan
MADISON HEIGHTS, Va. - Delores Lester Hogan, 58, died Thursday, June 27, 2002 at her residence. She was the wife of Ryland Bland Hogan. Born April 5, 1944 in Java, VA she was a daughter of the late Walter Aubrey and Virginia Wyatt Lester, Jr. She was a retired rural mail carrier from the Madison Heights Post Office and a member of Temple Baptist Church.
She is also survived by a son Marty B. Hogan and wife Kathi of Lynchburg, a daughter Janet Hogan Harris and husband Mike of Madison Heights, a sister Dale Lester Cooper and husband Charles of Halifax, a brother Walter Aubrey Lester, III and wife Alice of Salem, VA, three grandchildren Amanda Michelle Hogan, Stephanie Brooke Hogan and Austin Michael Harris and a special friend Debra Peters.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, June 29, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at Driskill Funeral Chapel with Rev. J.D. Surbaugh officiating. Burial will follow in Meade Cemetery.

Humphrey Morton
DANVILLE, Va. - Humphrey Morton, 86, beloved husband and father, of 581 Elizabeth Street Extension, (Tuck Away Lake Road), died Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born December 17, 1915, in Jacksonville, NC, he was the son of Jacob Morton and Mattie Kellum Morton, both deceased.
He was married June 30, 1949, to Pauline Jeffries Morton, living of the residence. He was a veteran of the United States Army, Tech. Sgt. during World War II. Born in Jacksonville, NC, he had been living in the Danville area and worked for Dan River, Inc. as an Engineer Technician, Supervisor for 53 years and retired at age 65. Member of Schoolfield Baptist Church, taught Sunday School, Deacon and member of Bray Bible Class. He graduated first in his class of Electronics at Danville Technical Institute.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law: Carolyn Morton Rogers and the Rev. Tim Rogers of Danville; son and daughter-in-law: Victor Wayne Morton and Cathy Morton of Danville; sister: Isabelle Morton of Jacksonville, NC; 5 brothers: June Morton and Ulysses Morton, both of Philadelphia, PA, Wilson Morton of Maryland, Edwin Morton of Wilmington, NC, and Lewis Morton of Jacksonville, NC; 3 grandchildren: David Morton, Lisa Morton and Daniel Rogers.
He was predeceased by 2 brothers: Leven Morton and Victor Morton.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, June 29, 2002, at Schoolfield Baptist Church by the Rev. David Turbyfill and the Rev. Tim Rogers. Burial will follow at Highland Burial Park with military honors performed by Dan River Post 1097 American Legion.

Ethel Ramsey
DANVILLE, Va. - Ethel Dalton Ramsey, 97, formerly of 212 Mountain Hill Road, died Thursday, June 27, 2002, at Piney Forest Health Care Center following declining health for over two years and three years at Piney Forest.
Born Aug. 8, 1904, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William Douglas Dalton and Lucy Goad Dalton.
She was married to Otis Harold Ramsey, who predeceased her. She had lived in Pittsylvania County prior to moving to Milton, N.C. to live for several years and then moving back to Danville. She attended Baptist Tabernacle for a number of years.
Survivors include one grandson, Horace Lea Foster of Danville; two additional grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one daughter, Margaret A. Foster.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Darrell Campbell officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

DANVILLE, Va. - Nelson Thomas "Hoot" Woods, 72, of 2708 Lawless Creek Road, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 26, 1929, he was the son of Lacy L. and Mary Flippen Woods.
He was married to Leona J. Wood, who predeceased him April 29, 2002.
Survivors include two sons, Jason Woods and Darrell Woods, both of Danville; one daughter, Rona Ellis of Washington, D.C.; one sister, Sarah Sydnor of Danville; two brothers, Junious Woods and Wallace Woods, both of Danville; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two step grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Friday at Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Thomas Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
