GREENSBORO, N.C. - Aubrey Arthur, widower, passed away at Moses Cone Hospital on Monday, Dec. 8, 2002 at the age of 86.
A mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002 at St. Pius the 10th Catholic Church. There will be an interment in New St. Mary's Cemetery in Bellmawr, N.J.
Mr. Arthur was a member of St. Pius the 10th Catholic Church. He was a 3rd degree Knight of Columbus in the St. Pius Council, also a 4th degree Knight in the Patrick Henry Assembly of Danville, Va. He was a professed member of the Secular Order of St. Francis of Assisi, the Franciscan family in Greensboro.
Preceded in death by his son-in-law, Thomas Townsend.
Mr. Arthur is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Townsend and husband Thomas of Gloucester, N.J.; son, David and wife Norma of Randleman, N.C.; brother, Walter and wife Dee of Denver, Colo.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren and eight step great-grandchildren.

Estelle Hiatt Bolden
DANVILLE, Va. - Estelle Hiatt Bolden, 76, of 112 Mitchell St., Apt. 1, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 12, 1925, in Mt. Airy, N.C., she was the daughter of Joseph A. Hiatt and Margie Bell Bennett Hiatt.
She lived most of her life in Danville and was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church.
She was married to John Henry Bolden Jr., who predeceased her June 28, 1986.
She is survived by a son, Steve Bolden of the residence; a daughter, Carolyn Powell of Bedford; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, James Andy Bolden and a brother, Pete Hiatt.
The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Tom Bernard officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her granddaughter, Amy Moore, 1988 Orphange Road.

Robert Daniel 'Jimmy' Booth Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Daniel "Jimmy" Booth Jr., 54, of 227 Locust Lane, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002.
Born Jan. 8, 1948, in Danville, he was the son of Robert D. Booth and Geneva Toler Booth.
He was employed by the state of New Jersey in Trenton. He attended John M. Langston High School and attended Vance St. Baptist Church.
He is survived by a son, Antonio King of Danville; a sister, Loretta B. Howerton of Danville; a brother, Purcell Booth of Richmond and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Vance St. Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. H. L. Dickerson officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Audrey Carson
DANVILLE, Va. - Audrey Scearce Riddle Carson, 79, 2860 Mount Cross Road, died Dec. 8, 2002 in Riverside Health Care Center after a decline in health for the past seven years.
Born Sept. 6, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Charles B. Scearce and Elsie Shumate Scearce.
She had lived all of her life in the Westover Community of Pittsylvania County and Danville. She had retired from Barbee Fabrics, where she worked as a sales clerk.
She was a member of Westover Baptist Church, where she was a former choir member and teacher.
She was married to her first husband, Albert B. Riddle, on Dec. 25, 1940. He predeceased her on March 3, 1988.
In addition, she was married to her second husband, D.T. Carson, on June 18, 1994. He predeceased her on May 7, 1996.
She is survived by one daughter, Janet Riddle Payne, of Danville; two sons, Richard Scearce Riddle and Michael G. Riddle, both of Danville; two sisters, Winnie S. Owen and Nona S. Hyler, both of Danville; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands, she was predeceased by one daughter, Margaret Riddle Hardy, in 1966.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Doug Barber and the Rev. Robert Vermillion officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Carolyn Covington Franklin
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Carolyn Covington Franklin, 55, of 820 Greenway Drive, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born March 14, 1947, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Charles Clyde Covington and Martha Keesee Covington.
She was owner and operator of Annie's Hearts.
She is survived by her husband, Dennis Franklin of South Boston; a daughter, Kim B. Conner of South Boston; a sister, Phyllis C. Bishop of Richmond and two granddaughters.
A memorial will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Saunders officiating.

Pearlie Holley Gibson
DANVILLE, Va. - Pearlie Holley Gibson, 81, of 600 Main St., Apt. 809, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 20, 1921, in Henry County, she was the daughter of Jyles Henry Holley and Addie Keaton Holley.
She worked as a waitress in Martinsville for a number of years prior to moving to Danville, where she worked at Dan River Mills.
She was of the Baptist faith.
She first married James Edward Cobbler, who predeceased her, and later married Percy Gibson, who also predeceased her.
She is survived by one daughter, Lucille Wilson Wyatt of Pelham, N.C. and one son, Larry Cobbler of Ashboro, N.C.; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands, she was predeceased by one son, Willie Leon Cobbler; one sister, Betty Jane Cobbler and two brothers, Kearfott Green Holley and Robert Lee Holley.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Johnny Dyer officiating. Interment will be in the Mayfield Baptist Church Cemetery on Route 700.

Mildred Graves Tennant Griffin
DANVILLE, Va. - Mildred Graves Tennant Griffin, 89, of 119 Belaire Drive, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002.
Born Dec. 29, 1912 in Chester, S.C., she was the daughter of Sidney Graves and Anna Lee Young Graves.
She had resided in Walterboro, S.C. and in Danville since 1997. She owned and operated Tennant Children Ware and Gift Shop before retiring. She was of the Baptist faith.
She married John B. Tennant, who predeceased her in 1974.
She later married James O. Griffin, who also predeceased her.
She is survived by one daughter, Martha T. Bratton of Danville; one son, Dr. John B. Tennant Jr. of Walterboro, S.C.; one sister, Helen Ann Graves of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Walterboro, S.C., with the Rev. Posey Belcher officiating.
The family received friends 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Fred Parker Funeral Home, Walterboro, S.C. At other times they will be at the Danville residence until Wednesday morning.

Ida L. Lowery
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Ida L. Lowery, age 79, of 4160 Lowery Rd., Virgilina, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at her home.
She was the daughter of Leonard L. Lowery and Mary Cole Lowery and was married to the late Monroe J. Lowery.
Surviving are a son, Lindy A. Lowery and his wife Patsy of Danville; a sister, Alice Clark of South Boston; a sister-in-law, Elsie Lowery, also of South Boston; five grandchildren, Candace Gravitt, Jessica Lowery, Amy Pearson, Scott Davis and Kevin Davis; and by two great-grandchildren, Mariah Davis and Austin Pearson.
Mrs. Lowery was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Shady Grove United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

Frances Gauldin Jones Meeks
REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Frances Gauldin Jones Meeks, 70, of 6593 Old U.S. Highway 29 North, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at her residence after six months of declining health.
Born Oct. 10, 1932, in Danville, Va., she was a daughter of Jesse Ernest Gauldin and Minnie Mae Walker Gauldin.
She lived in Danville, Va. and worked at Dan River Mills for 10 years prior to moving to Reidsville in 1985. She was a member of Rock of Ages Baptist Church of Reidsville and a member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post #1097.
She was married to Robert I. Jones, who predeceased her.
She is survived by three sons, Robert Michael Jones of Winston-Salem, Jerry W. Jones and David N. Jones, both of Danville, Va.; two daughters, Sherry J. Majors of Reidsville and Karen J. Griffin of Siler City; seven sisters, Pauline G. Ketchum of Danville, Va., Mamie G. New of Ruffin, Gladys G. Sparks of Providence, Delores G. Crabb of Danville, Va., Gloria G. Hampton of Danville, Va., Carolyn G. Ware of Ringgold, Va. and Linda G. Gauldin of Welcome; three brothers, Irvin W. Gauldin of Danville, Va., Leonard A. Gauldin of Roxboro and Kenneth W. Gauldin of Pelham; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Rock of Ages Baptist Church, King St., with the Rev. Cletus E. Grubbs officiating. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery in Danville, Va.

Howard R. Scarboro
DANVILLE, Va. - Mr. Howard R. Scarboro, age 81, of 124 Cumberland Drive, died Monday, December 9, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for the past year.
Mr. Scarboro was born in the Schoolfield community, February 3, 1921, a son of the late Rufus Samuel Scarboro and Henrietta Odell Scarboro.
He was an active member of the Schoolfield United Methodist Church and was a graduate of Schoolfield High School. Mr. Scarboro was an active member and past Commander of the American Legion Post #1097 and member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a veteran of World War II, serving the United States Army Air Corps in the Pacific Theatre of operations. He had retired from Dan River, Inc. and also worked at CIT as a consultant after retiring from Dan River.
Mr. Scarboro was preceded in death by six brothers, Elgin Scarboro, Stuart Scarboro, Raymond Scarboro, Parker Scarboro, Claude Scarboro and James Scarboro.
Surviving are his wife of the home, Naomi Alderman Scarboro; one son, Howard L. Scarboro and his wife Beverly of Amherst, Va.; one grandson, Lee Scarboro and his wife Christine of Wilton, Iowa; three great-grandchildren, Amanda Scarboro, Phillip Scarboro and Regan Scarboro, all of Wilton, Iowa; one brother, Rufus O. Scarboro of Danville; and one sister, Mary Alice Ives of Rockledge, Florida.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002 at 2 p.m. from the graveside at Mountain View Cemetery by the Rev. Dr. Roy Creech. Full military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #1097.
The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002 from 7-8:30, and at other times will be at the residence.

Shirley Briggs Solomon
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Shirley Briggs Solomon, 78, of 6265 N.C. Hwy. 119 North, Leasburg, N.C., died Dec. 10, 2002, at Person County Hospital, Roxboro, N.C.
She was a native of Caswell County, N.C. and the daughter of the late Oscar Thurman Briggs and Annie Rivers Briggs. She was the wife of Robert E. Solomon, who survives. She was a homemaker and a member of Union United Methodist Church.
Other than her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Kitty Madren and husband Wayne of Burlington, N.C., Gail Richardson and husband Ritchie of Leasburg, N.C. and June Aherron of Providence, N.C.; three sons, Brent Solomon and wife Deborah of Mebane, N.C. Barry Solomon and wife Mary of Greensboro, N.C. and Greg Solomon and wife Kim of Lexington, N.C.; a sister, Ruth Kimbro of Martinsville, Va.; a brother, Hulon Briggs of Graham, N.C.; five grandchildren and six step grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Union United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jeff Tallent with interment in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends after the service in the church fellowship hall and at other times at the residence of a daughter, Gail Richardson, 8057 N.C. Hwy. 119 North, Leasburg, N.C.

Roy Lee Atkinson
CHATHAM, Va. - Roy Lee Atkinson, 79, of 14329 U.S. Hwy. 29, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at his residence.
Born March 25, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Ernest B. and Maude Keesee Atkinson.
He retired from Hertz Penske with 20 years of service. He was a member and Deacon of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church and served on various committees. He was a charter member of Mt. Hermon Volunteer Fire Department and served in the army during World War II.
On Jan. 6, 1945, he married Helen A. Atkinson, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Phyllis A. Robinson of Charleston, S.C.; three sons, Charles W. Atkinson of Spring Garden, Johnny D. Atkinson of Danville and Larry T. Atkinson of Ringgold; a sister, Jean A. Chamblin of Chatham; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Doris A. Harris and a brother, E.B. Atkinson.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Davidson officiating. Interment will be at Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors by American Legion Post 1097.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church and at other times will be at the residence.
