Jud Dexter Buchanan Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Jud Dexter Buchanan Sr., 81, formerly of Georgetown, S.C., died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center after three years of declining health and two years in the Brian Center in Yanceyville, N.C.
Born March 8, 1921, in Kings Mountain, N.C., he was the son of Coy Lee Buchanan and Lona Gammon Bible Buchanan.
He lived his life in Georgetown, S.C. where he was self-employed as a seafood wholesaler. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and was a 32nd degree mason. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II. He was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by three sons, Jud Dexter Buchanan Jr. of Chatham, Steven N. Buchanan of Stuarts Draft and Dennis J. Buchanan of Georgetown, S.C.; a daughter, Marie B. Vaughn of Danville; two half brothers, Otis Buchanan of Lexington, N.C. and Cecil Buchanan of Greensboro, N.C.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Carl Douglas Buchanan and a brother, Herbert Nelson Buchanan. The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with the Rev. Wayne Prillaman officiating and military rights by American Legend Post #1097.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.

Helen Moss Clifton
FAIRFAX, Va. - Helen Moss Clifton, 74, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, in Fairfax Hospital.
Born Dec. 20, 1928, in Danville, she was a daughter of Olive and Oscar Moss.
She had lived most of her life in Fairfax and was a teacher for Arlington County Schools for 12 years. She was a graduate of Brosville High School in Pittsylvania County, and a graduate of Radford College.
She married Henry Grant Clifton on March 23, 1951.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Lisa Clifton Hailer of Sherborn, Mass. and Jan Clifton Abart of Manassas; a sister, Oneida Moss Walters of Coral Gables, Fla.; two brothers, Richard D. Moss and Marvin L. Moss, both of Danville; and two grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a brother, Norman R. Moss, of Danville.
A memorial will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Alban's Episcopal Church.

CUMBERLAND, Va. - William "W.D." Dodson, 72, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002.
He is survived by three sons, Dennis Dodson of Richmond, Michael Dodson of Cumberland and Billy Dodson of Danville; two sisters, Addie Dodson Oaks of Florida and Kitty Dodson Thompson of Danville; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Grove Methodist Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Adrian Forrest Ferguson Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Adrian Forrest Ferguson Sr., 48, of 2172 Old Richmond Road, died Dec. 30, 2002, at his residence.
Born Aug. 28, 1954, in Danville, he was the son of Lillian G. Ferguson, who predeceased him and George J. Ferguson, who survives.
He recently became a member of Bibleway World Wide Cathedral. He was employed by Mason Nite Industries.
He was married to Shirley Ann Venable Ferguson, who survives.
In addition to his father and wife, he is survived by a daughter, Chaquita D. Reed of Danville; two sons, Adrian Forrest Ferguson Jr. of Salisbury, N.C. and Erick Duane Ferguson of Danville and two sisters, Brenda Diane Ferguson of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Trudie Lorraine Logan of Bedford, Texas.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Johnson officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Beavers Funeral Home.

Richard Edward Hopkins
DANVILLE, Va. - Richard Edward Hopkins, 54, of 825 Livestock Road, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Sept. 23, 1948, in Martinsville, he was the son of Carl Hopkins and Lorene Stegall Hopkins.
He was employed with Hopkins Roofing and Sheet Metal. He was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by a son, Michael Hopper of Reidsville, N.C.; three brothers, Steve Hopkins of Danville, Roy Hopkins of Collinsville and Sherman Hopkins of Danville; two sisters, Martha Hunt and Barbara Prillaman, both of Collinsville and one grandchild.
He was predeceased by his wife, Nancy Hopkins.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. J.D. Harmon officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

Emily C. Ogburn
RICHMOND, Va. - Emily C. Ogburn died Dec. 29, 2002 at St. Mary's Hospital after a period of declining health.
Born Dec. 15, 1917, in Danville, she was a daughter of Emily Goetz and Claud E. Clark.
She served as the Executive Director of the Catawba County Chapter of the American Red Cross for over 25 years. She was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hickory, N.C.
She is survived by two daughters, Emily (Leigh) Crown of Richmond and Linda Nachtigall of Broadway; a brother, Ernest A. Clark of Marietta, Ga.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by a brother, Claud and a sister, Ruth Penn.
A memorial will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Hickory, N.C.

Gladys Rice Pugh
LECANTO, Fla. - Gladys Rice Pugh, 88, of 2730 West Marc-Knighton Court, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at Surrey Place Convalescent Home.
Born Feb. 17, 1914, in Carter County, Tenn., she was the daughter of Gabriel Rice and Dossie Bowen Rice.
She was of the Baptist faith. She lived most of her life in California and for the past 15 years, she lived in Florida.
She retired as an assembly specialist from North American Aircraft Company where she worked on computer boards for the space shuttle program.
She was married to Harry Raymond Pugh, who predeceased her Nov. 22, 1998.
She is survived by a daughter, Naomi Rose of Winchester, Calif.; a son, Stanley R. Pugh of Conroe, Texas; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by four brothers and six sisters.
The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens, Danville, Va., with the Rev. Dr. Charles B. Scearce officiating.

Magdalene 'Mag' Ratliffe Donnell
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Magdalene "Mag" Ratliffe Donnell, of 1111 Benjamin Benson St., died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Moses Cone Hospital.
She is survived by her mother, Ellen Y. Ratliffe; a son, Frank D. Ratliffe II and a granddaughter, all of Danville, Va.
The memorial will be held noon Tuesday at McLaurin Memorial Chapel.

Aubrey Willis Gourley
DANVILLE, Va. - Mr. Aubrey Willis Gourley of 227 Hamlin Avenue died Sunday, December 22, 2002 at the Danville Regional Medical Center. Before being admitted to the hospital he was a resident at Piney Forest Health Care Center and Outlook Pointe at Danville.
Mr. Gourley was born in Danville, Va. November 21, 1918, a son of the late Frederick Hamilton Gourley and Mary Hodges Gourley.
He was a member of the College Park Baptist Church since 1930 and former Intermediate Sunday School teacher, Secretary-Treasurer of The Allgood Class and Deacon Emeritus. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Navy in the fleet post office in Miami, FL and San Francisco, CA. Mr Gourley was a member of the American Legion Memorial Post #325 and was retired from Rush Wholesale as a bookkeeper. Mr. Gourley was married to Catherine Walton Gourley on August 23, 1940. Mrs. Gourley died January 26, 2002.
Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Alice Gourley of Danville; one granddaughter, Jennifer Gourley, Danville; one brother, Claude P. Gourley, Blairs; and two sisters, Agnes G. Conway, Painter, Va. and Bernice G. Hardy, Ashland, Va.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 24, 2002 at 11 a.m. from College Park Baptist Church by the Reverend Dr. Gary Tucker and the Reverend Carl Burger. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park with full military honors being conducted by the American Legion Memorial Post #325.
The family received friends at College Park Baptist Church on Monday, December 23, 2002 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence of his son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Alice Gourley, 3106 Douglas Court, Blairmont Acres.

Alice Harris Humphrey
DANVILLE, Va. - Alice Harris Humphrey, age 84, formerly of 181 Sunset Drive, died Sunday, December 22, 2002 in the Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
She was born on September 16, 1918, in Inman, S.C., a daughter of Andy Harris and Lillian Evington Harris.
She was married to Henry Hilliard Humphrey who died March 4, 1989. She had lived most of her life in Danville and was of the Methodist faith.
Mrs. Humphrey is survived by her daughter, Margaret H. Motley and her husband, Philip of Danville; a son, C.H. Humphrey and his wife, Polly, of Danville; a sister, Helen H. Williams of LaGrange, Ga.; three grandchildren, Keith Motley, Gwen Motley and Allen Humphrey, all of Danville; and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, December 24, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. from the Mausoleum Chapel at Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Freddie Vicks.

HALIFAX, Va. - Shirley Irene Hurda, 66, of 1200 Sweeney Trail, died Dec. 23, 2002, at her residence.
Born Jan. 23, 1936, in Ormond Beach, Fla., she was the daughter of John Calvin Lowe and Jeanette Lowe.
She was married to Donald J. Hurda.
In addition to her husband of Halifax, she is survived by a daughter, Sherri Gizara of Chesapeake; a son, Donald C. Hurda of Richmond, Ind.; two brothers, Joe Lowe of St. Augustine, Fla. and Hugh Lowe of Ore City, Texas and four grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Norma Rontree and Geraldine Lowe.

DANVILLE, Va. - Jesse Frank Kellam, 73, of 223 Kenmore Drive, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, in Piney Forest Health Care Center after a decline in health for the last 10 years and being in Piney Forest Health Care Center for the last three years.
Born May 25, 1929, in Danville, he was a son of Martin Luther Kellam and Mary Poff Kellam.
He lived in Danville all of his life. In his early life he worked for Dan River, Inc. as a supervisor and later was in business with his wife's father, Grapette Bottling Company.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of American Legion Dan River Post #1097.
He was of the Baptist faith and also a graduate of Schoolfield High School.
He was married to Jean Myers Kellam.
In addition to his wife, of the home, he is survived by one daughter, Joyce K. McMahon of Apex, N.C.; one son, Jay M. Kellam of Danville; two sisters, Abagail Remmington of Virginia Beach and Bonnie Gilbert of Raleigh, N.C. and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. W.L. Wade officiating. Interment will follow.
