HURT, Va. - Johnathan Edward Neal, 30, of 133 Perdue Drive, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at Quarry Road.
Born June 20, 1972, in Danville, he was the son of Jerry Edward Neal and Susan Hamlett Neal Buckner.
He lived most of his life in the Danville area and graduated from George Washington High School. He was employed with Burton Roofing Company of Evington. He attended Motley Baptist Church.
In addition to his father of Ringgold and his mother of Eden, N.C., he is survived by a stepfather, Bill Buckner of Eden, N.C. ; a maternal grandmother, Louise R. Hamlett of Hurt; a paternal grandmother, Mattie G. Neal of Blairs; four stepsisters, Ann Buckner, Jeanne B. Penn, both of Eden, N.C., June Beth Buckner of Blanch, N.C. and Karyn Preston of Danville and three stepbrothers, Jay Buckner, James Buckner, both of Danville and Eric Gunnell of Henderson, Nev.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Roy Creech officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his aunt, Ramona Neal Fletcher, 120 Old Piney Forest Road, Lot 83, Danville Mobile Home Park.

Gladys Gauldin Sparks
PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Gladys Gauldin Sparks, 66, of 10547 Highway 86 North, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 23, 1936, in Danville, she was the daughter of Jessie E. Gauldin and Minnie Walker Gauldin Blanks.
Most of her life was lived in the Danville and Pelham, N.C. area.
She was a member of the Goodyear Ladies Golf League and served as past President.
She was of the Baptist faith and was a homemaker.
She was married to Rayford Garland Sparks, who predeceased her January 7, 2002.
She is survived by one daughter, Cynthia Sparks Wharton of Ruffin; two sons, William E. Sparks of Morrisville and Jon M. Sparks of Providence; six sisters, Pauline G. Ketchum of Danville, Va., Mamie G. New of Ruffin, Delores G. Crabb and Gloria G. Adkins, both of Dry Fork, Va., Carolyn G. Ware of Ringgold, Va. and Linda G. Gauldin of Welcome; three brothers, Irvin G. Gauldin of Danville, Va., Leonard A. Gauldin of Roxboro and Kenneth W. Gauldin of Pelham; and three grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one sister, Frances J. Meeks and four brothers, Hubert, Luther, Jessie and Ernest Gauldin.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David R. Turbyfill officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

Garland Wayne Vaden
DANVILLE, Va. - Mr. Garland Wayne Vaden, age 56, of 82 Hylton Avenue, died Monday, December 23, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been a patient since Friday and was retired on disability since 1998.
Mr. Vaden was born in Richmond, Va., October 31, 1946, a son of Iris Francis Hankins of Danville and the late Roger Herman Vaden. He was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Vaden was predeceased by a daughter, Lisa K. Finney.
Besides his mother, Mr. Vaden is survived by his wife of the home, Betty Collins Vaden. One daughter and son-in-law, Angela Vaden Hamlett and Richard Bryan Hamlett of Danville. Three grandchildren, Joseph Lee Finney, Samantha K. Finney and Alivia Marie Vaden.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2002, at 2 p.m. from the Townes Funeral Home Memorial Chapel by Bishop Jeffery Hopkins. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home on Friday, December 27, 2002, from 7-8:30 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence, 82 Hylton Avenue.
Irvin White
DANVILLE, Va. - James Irvin White, 76, of 5280 Mount Cross Road, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center, after being in declining health the last six months and in the hospital the last five days.
Born June 15, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Conway White and Mamie Breedlove White, who predeceased him.
He had lived all of his life in Pittsylvania County. He had retired from Barkhouser Ford where he had worked for a number of years as parts manager.
Prior to becoming employed by Barkhouser Ford he worked with the former Crowell Long Motor Company of Danville for about 10 years.
He was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, a member of the Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge and a member of the Danville Scottish Rite Bodies.
He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II on the Destroyer U.S.S. Phillsbury.
He married Ellen Scearce White on Jan. 5, 1949.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two sons, Irvin Keith White and Mark Steven White, both of Danville; three daughters, Sandra W. Hylton and Shelia W. Smith, both of Danville and Patricia W. Jones of Ashburn and 13 grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Leland C. White and one sister, Cecil W. Benson.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday from the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Don Davidson officiating. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors by Dan River American Legion Post 1097.
The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times will be at the residence.

RALEIGH, N.C. - Nathaniel James Bethel, 51, died unexpectedly at his home.
Born Dec. 14, 1950, he was the son of Nathaniel H. and Ruth Fulton Bethel. He was a graduate of George Washington High School and Duke University.
He is survived by a sister, Joyce B. Goode of Greensboro.
The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will meet 45 minutes prior to the service at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.

Brenda Diane Dix Dalton
RINGGOLD, Va. - Brenda Diane Dix Dalton, 55, of 2841 Ringgold Depot Road, Lot 15, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 5, 1947, in Danville, she was the daughter of James Dix Sr. and Grace Vernon Dix.
She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
She married Roger D. Dalton on Dec. 21, 1972.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Charles Rudder Jr and Steven Alan Rudder, both of Danville; two daughters, Linda Kay R. Laws of Gretna and Kim Polley of Kentucky; two brothers, Robert L. Dix of Danville and James Dix Jr. of Texas; and five grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a sister, Vera Dalton.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hylton Lawrence officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Ruthie Gammon Dillard
DANVILLE, Va. - Ruthie Mae Gammon Dillard, 62, formerly of 1152 Franklin Turnpike, Apt. D, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital, South Boston.
Born Sept. 16, 1940, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Levi D. Gammon, who predeceased her and Ruthie Dean Hamlett Gammon Adkins, who survives.
She was of the Baptist faith. She had been disabled for some time.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by a son, Drewery Gauldin of Danville; a daughter, Ellen Diane Talalak of Spencer; a brother, Michael Adkins Jr. of Danville; a sister, Carol Combs of Ringgold; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her father, she was predeceased by a brother, James P. Adkins.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Vermillion officiating. Interment will be in Union Methodist Church Cemetery in Yanceyville, N.C.

Hannibal Jefferson Dye
EDEN, N.C. - Hannibal Jefferson "Ham" Dye, 92, of 600 Riverside Circle, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at Annie Penn Skilled Care Facility in Reidsville.
He was born in Rockingham County and was a member of Leaksville United Methodist Church. He is also a member of Mason's Lodge 387. During World War II, he served in the US Merchant Marines in the Atlantic and Mediterranean Theatres. He then worked for the N.C. Natural Gas Company until retiring in 1972.
He is survived by a daughter, Cathy Aaron of Cornelius and two grandsons.
He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Lelia Cobb Dye.
The funeral will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at Leaksville United Methodist Church. Entombment will follow at Overlook Mausoleum. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Fair Funeral Home and at other times at 1022 West Avenue.

Peggie Miller Elliott
DANVILLE, Va. - Peggie Miller Elliott, 64, of 203 Haraway Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a battle with cancer for the past year and one week in the hospital.
Born April 6, 1938, in Washington County, she was the daughter of Harry Lee Miller and Cletus Nester Miller Dalton.
She had resided in Danville most of her life. She was employed by the Virginia Health Department in the Danville and Pittsylvania County office for many years prior to her retirement. She was an active member of North Main Baptist Church, serving on numerous committees, taught the Sonshine Sunday School class, was a worker with the church annual retreat program and a member of the choir.
She married B.C. Elliott Jr. on Feb. 28, 1976.
In addition to her husband of Danville, she is survived by six daughters, Cynthia Melton and husband, Sherwood of Hurdle Mills, N.C., Cathy Cieslak and husband, Joseph of Louisville, Ky., Kelly Peterson and husband, Roy of Keeling, Christy Cain of Chilhowie, Carla Perkins and husband, Jeff of Gretna and Carter Rae Tarwater and husband, Scott of Houston, Texas; and nine grandchildren, Justin and Tyler Melton; Daniel, Elizabeth and Emily Cieslak; Isaac Peterson; Tucker Roark Cain; and Jesika and Casey Perkins.
The memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at North Main Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Deryl Holliday and the Rev. Dr. J. Leroy Clack officiating. The graveside service will be private. The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at North Main Baptist Church and will at other times be at the residence.

Doc Harris
BLAIRS, Va. - Parrish Justus "Doc" Harris, 85, of Blairs, VA died at the Danville Regional Medical Center on Friday, November 22, 2002. He had been a resident of Roman Eagle Memorial Home for 26 months.
He was born on Friday, February 23, 1917, in Pittsylvania County. He was the son of the late Hattie Easley Harris and William J. Harris. He was the husband of the late Minnie Shields Harris.
He is survived by one sister, Julia H. Overstreet of Brenard, N.C; four brothers, Harry F. Harris, William J. Harris and his wife Mary, Nathan A. Harris, and Ennett E. Harris and his wife Ann, all of Chatham. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Elizabeth S. Davis of Blairs. He was predeceased by three sisters, Lois H. Swann, Virginia H. Elliott and Nora H. Haymes; and one brother, Eben B. Harris.
He was a long time member of Oakland United Methodist Church, having served on the administration board of trustees and was a lay speaker. He was a member of the fisherman's club and a Sunday school teacher for 30 plus years. After his retirement from Dan River Mills, he raised vegetables and fruit for his friends and neighbors and was a beekeeper and an avid sportsman. He gave his time visiting the shut-ins.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Oakland United Methodist Church Monday, November 25, 2002 at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Steve Lewis. Interment will be at Highland Burial Park in Danville. The family will receive friends Sunday, November 24, 2002 from 4 to 7 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence of his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Davis, 3996 Snakepath Road, Blairs.

Harry Marshall Heath
CHATHAM, Va. - Harry Marshall Heath, 81, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at his residence.
Born Jan. 31, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James M. Heath and Maggie Lester Wright Heath. Mr. Heath was a member of the Salem Church of Christ and was a retired sawmill operator and farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Annie Austin Heath, of the residence. He is also survived by one daughter, Patricia Ann Heath of Chatham; one son, Harry Lee Heath of Chatham; four sisters, Dorothy H. Bryant of Blairs, Mary H. Bubb of Washington, D.C., Gladys H. Adams of Gretna and Rachel H. Miller of Roanoke; and one granddaughter.
The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Heath Family Cemetery by the Rev. Hershel Stone and the Rev. Larry Owen. Military honors will be conducted by the Russell Morris Chapter DAV/VFW Post 4165 of Altavista.

Raymell Williams Hicks
DANVILLE, Va. - Raymell Virginia Williams Hicks, 85, of 240 Bennett St., died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after seven months of declining health. She was a resident of the home for 13 months.
Born Sept. 13, 1917, in Lexington, N.C., she was the daughter of Robert Baxter Williams and Lottie Mae Ferrell Williams.
She had lived her entire life in the Vandola community and prior to her retirement, she worked in the No. 8 spin at Dan River Mills. She was a member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church and the Dan River Retiree Club.
She was married to Howard Eugene Hicks, who predeceased her Feb. 7, 1986. She is survived by two sons, William Eugene Hicks of Danville and James Ray Hicks of Axton; two daughters, Patricia Hicks Taylor of Union Hall and Alice Hicks Greene of Blairs; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Ronald Baxter Hicks.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
