Estelle Mitchell
DANVILLE, Va. - Estelle Ferguson Mitchell, 84, formerly of 419 Airport Drive, died Friday, June 14, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center following five years of declining health and 2 1/2 years as a resident of Riverside Health Care.
Born Nov. 24, 1917, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of H. Raymond Ferguson and Fannie Collie Ferguson.
She was married to Joshua Lewis Mitchell, who predeceased her Nov. 6, 1984. She had lived her entire life in Danville, Halifax County, and Pittsylvania County and was a member of the Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Donald P. Mitchell of Ringgold; one daughter, Patsy Ingram of Oregon City, Ore.; one sister, Ida Gillenwater of Martinsville; three brothers, James T. Ferguson of Gatewood, N.C., William B. Ferguson of Pennsylvania and Stylis N. Ferguson of Danville; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, a twin sister, Elsierine Owen, and a brother, Robert H. Ferguson predecease her.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Rick Lancaster officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends from 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and will receive friends at other times at the residence of her son, 857 Homestead Trail in Ringgold.

Zelma Morris
PELHAM, N.C. - Zelma McKinney Morris, 90, of 217 Nunnally Road, died Saturday, June 15, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at Pelham United Methodist Church and the burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Morris was a native of Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late John and Laura Durham McKinney. She was a homemaker and a faithful member of Pelham United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Mae Gerringer Bible Class and the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Home Demonstration Club and the Golden Girls. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Morris, Sr.
She is survived by her son, Charlie N. Morris, Jr. and wife, Adele of Pelham; daughter Jane Morris Jefferson and husband, Don of Florida; 6 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Monday, June 17, at Pelham United Methodist Church from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and other times at her home.

Early ‘Jack' Moss
DANVILLE, Va. - Early "Jack" Moss Sr., 73, of 3767 Vandola Road, died Saturday, June 15, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born September 21, 1928 in Pittsylvania County in the Vandola community, he was a son of Charlie Lamberth Moss and Annie Calvert Moss, who both predeceased him.
He was married to Margaret Hall Moss, who survives. Mr. Moss was a well known farmer in the Vandola community and later retired from Maola Dairy Company.
He attended Brosville School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He served in Germany during the Korean conflict.
He was a member of Vandola Baptist Church where he was a deacon and sang in the choir. He was a past president of Westover Ruritan Club.
Mr. Moss had been in declining health for two years and was in the hospital one month.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Cynthia Moss Parker of Keeling, Va. and Susan Moss Harville of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one son, Early Jackson Moss, Jr. of Chatham, Va.; three sisters, Mildred Gammon and Pencie Soyars, both of the Vandola community, and Eva Mae Stratton of Danville, Va.; and five grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Charles E. Moss and Garland Moss, five sisters, Emma Moss, Ollie Lynskey, Doris Pilson, Virgie Hylton and Eula Moss, and one grandchild, Joshua Hardison.
The funeral will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at Vandola Baptist Church with the Rev. Rick Lancaster, the Rev. Dr. LeRoy Clack and the Rev. Bill Owsley officiating. Interment will follow at the Moss family cemetery with military honors by American Legion Dan River Post #1097 honor guard.

Naomi Rodgers
SUTHERLIN, Va. - Naomi Catherine Rodgers, 65, of 3077 Hackberry Road, died Thursday, June 13, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 27, 1937, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of James Williams and Pauline Brandon Williams.
She was married to the Rev. Elroy Rodgers, who survives. She was a certified nursing assistant for Commonwealth Health Care and was retired from Roman Eagle Memorial Home. She was a member of Hackberry Baptist Church in Sutherlin.
In addition to her husband of Ringgold, survivors include three daughters, Paulette Rodgers Simington of Martinsville, Rosalyn Scott of Danville, and Karen Rodgers Long of Durham, N.C.; six sisters, Annie Pritchett and Joyce Ward, both of Philadelphia, Pa., LaVerne McClary of Stoneville, N.C., Mary Lois Graves of Milton, N.C., Hilda Withers and Jeraline Williams, both of Danville; one brother, Gene Elbers Williams of Blairs; and five grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by one son, Kelvin Rodgers and one brother, Ralph Williams.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Hackberry Baptist Church in Sutherlin with the Rev. Ronnie Walker officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Sylvia Thornton
DANVILLE, Va. - Sylvia Lee Towell Thornton, 59, of 2228 Windridge Court, died Sunday, June 16, 2002 at her residence.
Born June 21, 1942 in Lexington, N.C. she was a daughter of John Towell and Beatrice McKnight Towell.
She was married to Larry William Thornton, who survives. She lived most of her life in the Danville area and was a homemaker and retired as a beautician due to declining health. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three daughters, Tina Luketic and Terri Luketic Totherow, both of Danville, and Debbie Meade Anderson of Dry Fork; four sisters, Carolyn Austin and Lillie Mae Gauldin, both of Dry Fork, Linda Shumate of Danville and Lou Ella Parker of Colonial Heights; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Westover Baptist Church with the Revs. Dr. Doug Barber and J.B. Baldridge officiating. Interment will be private.

Leanester Walton
CHATHAM, Va. - Leanester Stephens Walton, 76, of 2528 Strawberry Road, died Saturday, June 15, 2002 at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
She was born March 24, 1926 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, a daughter of the late Patrick Stephens and the late Martha Thompson Stephens.
She was married to Harry B. Walton, who survives and was retired from Dan River Mills, Inc. She was a member of New Mine Creek Progressive Primitive Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by one daughter, Jacqueline Hunt of the residence, one son, Azad Dawan of the residence, one sister, Martha S. White of Danville, VA, two granddaughters, Kelice Diane Hunt and Erin Leanester Hunt, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and close friends. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by one daughter, Loard Esther Walton.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 2528 Strawberry Road, Chatham, Virginia.
Funeral services for Mrs. Leanester S. Walton will be conducted on Tuesday, June 18, 2002 from the Chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home with Elder Keith Shuler officiating. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Melchior Ash Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Melchior Ash Jr., 82, of 143 Water St., died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 23, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Melchior Ash Sr. and Lucy Cunningham Ash.
He was married to Alice Clements Ash, who predeceased him. He was the owner and operator of Ash Radio and T.V. Service.
Survivors include two sons, W. Howard Ash of Danville and Melchior Ash III of Baltimore, Md.; and a number of grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, June 27, at Mount Carmel Baptist Church with the Rev. James E. Stewart officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Post 29 Honor Guard.

Mattie Blair
DANVILLE, Va. - Mattie Dixon Blair, 93, of 2526 North Main St., died Monday, June 24, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home following five years of declining health and three years at Roman Eagle.
Born March 30, 1909, in Gibson, S.C., she was the daughter of John Martin Dixon and Lydia Jane Dixon.
She was married to George Dewey Blair, who predeceased her. She was a member of the Tabernacle. She lived in Hinesville before moving to Danville in 1970. She was retired from Dan River Mills Inc. where she worked for 32 years in the draw in room.
Survivors include one son, James Y. Blair of Danville; one stepson, William Blair of Danville; and two step grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by one stepdaughter, Lorraine B. Dunn and one brother, John Dixon.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Cleo Hundley officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Minor S. Cheek Jr.
ALEXANDRIA, La. - Minor S. "Sonny" Cheek Jr. died Wednesday, June 19, 2002, after a lengthy illness.
Born March 20, 1936, in Danville, Va., he was the son of Texie S. Cheek, who survives, and the late Minor S. Cheek.
He was married to Phyllis Cheek, who survives. He was the owner of Cheek's accounting and was active in the Catholic church.
In addition to his mother of Danville, Va., and wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Kenneth Cheek of Louisiana; one daughter, Cynthia Fallon of Louisiana; five brothers, Bob Cheek of Aberdeen, Md., Billy Cheek, Ray Cheek and Jack Cheek, all of Danville, Va., and Jimmy Cheek of Morehead City, N.C.; one sister, Patsy Johnson of Sykesville, Md.; and six grandchildren.
He was buried
Saturday in Alexandria.
Elaine Gregory
SUTHERLIN, Va. - Elaine Eleanor Vanderbeck Gregory, 78, died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at Halifax Regional Medical Center following two years of declining health and 10 days in the hospital.
Born Sept. 13, 1923, in South Amboy, N.J., she was the daughter of John Jack Vanderbeck and Edna E. Williams Vanderbeck.
She was married March 21, 1942, to Paul McKinlen Gregory Sr., who predeceased her Aug. 31, 1992. She moved to the Danville area in 1950 prior to residing in Jersey City. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a retired homemaker.
Survivors include two sons, Paul McKinley Gregory Jr. and Robert Lee Gregory, both of Danville; one daughter, Mary Ellen Vaden of Stockbridge, Ga.; four sisters; two brothers; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by one son, Richard Dennis Gregory.
The funeral will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with Father Charles Breindel officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Billie Myers
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Billie Dodson Myers, 79, of 412 Ellyson Ave., died Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at the residence.
Born Oct. 23, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Roy Wister Dodson and Myrtie Owen Dodson.
She was a retired cloth grader for J.P. Stevens and was a member of Seven Oaks Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Wayne Myers of Forest and David Raye Myers of South Boston; one daughter, Linda M. Burgett of South Boston; two sisters, Cecil Blair of Danville and Mary Ola Marshall of Crownsville, Md.; three brothers, Mitchell Dodson of Semora, N.C., Glen Dodson and Vernon Dodson, both of Yanceyville, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two sisters, Pattie Clark and Nelsie Taylor; and four brothers, Buster Dodson, Alexander Dodson, Roger Dodson and Newman Dodson.

MILTON, N.C. - Fannie Case Owen, 68, of 2936 Yarborough Mill Road, Milton, NC, died Monday, June 24, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. at her daughter's residence in Roxboro, NC.
Born December 4, 1933 in Caswell County, NC, she was the daughter of John Jesse Case and Fannie Susan Moorefield Case, both deceased.
She was married to Richard Herman Owen, who predeceased her. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Milton, NC. She had worked at Royal Textile Mills of Yanceyville, NC.
Survivors include daughters: Vickie Roycroft and husband Willard R. Roycroft of Roxboro, NC, Betty O. Pierce and husband Ronnie L. Pierce of Danville, VA, Sandra Lynn O. Robinson and husband Steve Robinson of Prospect Hill, NC; grandchildren: Jason Roycroft, Susan Wilson, Michael S. Owen, Scotty L. Owen, Christopher Wiles and Steven G. Robinson; one grandchild on the way and one great-grandchild on the way.
She was predeceased by one brother: John D. Case; and sisters: Mary Lefler, Irene Weadon, Ruby Hamlett, and Alma Case.

Edna Riddle
DANVILLE, Va. - Edna Ingram Riddle, 77, formerly of Heritage Towers, died Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home following declining health since July 1999.
Born June 16, 1925, in Keeling, she was the daughter of Hugh Henry Ingram and Gennie Lester Ingram.
She was married June 6, 1956, to David Loyd Riddle, who survives. She was a member of Community Baptist Church and lived most of her life in Danville. She was retired from Woolworth's Department Store where she worked as a salesperson.
In addition to her husband of Danville, survivors include one sister, Frances Ingram Sides of Danville; and one brother, Hugh Henry Ingram of Winston-Salem, N.C.
The funeral will be held 4 p.m. Thursday at Community Baptist Church with the Rev. James Albert officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.
