The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Gary Milstead officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and other times will be at the residence.
Billie Joyce Sparrow
WALDORF, Md. - Billie Joyce ‘Billie Jo' Sparrow, 69, died June 24, 2002, in Waldorf, Md.
Born October 31, 1932, in Virginia, she was the daughter of Charles Frank Sams and Ella Ruth LaProud.
She was married to the late Ira Troy Sparrow. She was a bus driver for Keller's Bus Service of Waldorf, Md. from 1969-2002.
Survivors include two sons, Ira C. Sparrow of Waldorf, Md. and Timothy T. Sparrow of Baltimore, Md.; daughters-in-law, June & Tara Sparrow; grandchildren, April Connell and Kelly DelRio, both of Waldorf, Md., Joshua Troy Sparrow, Justin Sparrow and Jareth Sparrow, all of Baltimore, Md.; and great-grandchildren, Zachary Connell, Joshua Connell and Shane Connell, all of Waldorf, Md.
The funeral will be held Thursday, June 27, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church-Piney Parish, Waldorf, Md. Interment will take place at Highland Burial Park in Danville, Va. Friday, June 28, 2002 at 1:00 p.m.
The visitation will be held at Huntt Funeral Home, 3035 Old Washington Rd., Waldorf, Md. 20604, on Wednesday, June 26, 2002 from 5-8 p.m.

Paula Stanley
MACON, Ga. - Paula Terrell Stanley, 88, formerly of Danville, Va., died Tuesday, June 25, 2002.
Born April 12, 1914, in Greenville, she was the daughter of Judge J. Render Terrell and Mamie Harrison Terrell.
She was married to Cash M. Stanley Jr., who predeceased her.
Survivors include three sons, Cash M. Stanley III, MD, and Terrell Stanley, both of Macon, Ga., and David Stanley of Marietta, Ga.; two sisters, Hope Terrell of Greenville and Jessie Terrell Doughtie of Columbus, Ga.; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Greenville Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Greenville Cemetery.

Veronica Thompson
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Mrs. Veronica Newton Thompson of 2809 St. Regis Road died Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at her residence.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 28, 2002 at Starmount Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Thompson was born in Manchester, England. She came to the United States in 1946 as a war bride and became a naturalized citizen in 1957. She and her husband, John lived in Danville, Virginia from 1952 to 1966. Mrs. Thompson was a member of Starmount Presbyterian Church and Circle No. 4. She was a homemaker and enjoyed golf, knitting, needlepoint and reading.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, John W. Thompson, Jr. of the home; daughter, Susan Thompson Wrazen and husband, Rich of Durham; sons, John W. Thompson III and wife, Kathy of Greensboro, David Bryan Thompson of N. Myrtle Beach, SC, Brentley Newton Thompson of Liberty; grandchild, Elizabeth Paige Thompson Cline; step-grandchildren, Ashley Purcell, Amy Wrazen Clark, Ashley Wrazen Kransdorf and four step great grandchildren.

DANVILLE, Va. - Ida M. Bradshaw, 69, of 528 Keen St., died July 12, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 17, 1932, in Nashville, NC, she was the daughter of Bill Cooper Sr., who predeceased her, and Ola Cooper, who survives.
She attended Smyrna Missionary Baptist Church in New Jersey and was a retired state employee of New Jersey.
Survivors, in addition to her mother of Danville, include one daughter, Ava R. Thomas of Washington, DC; two sons, Larry Cooper of Danville and Dennis Cooper of Newark, N.J.; five sisters, Madeline Brake and Louise Burke, both of Danville, Nancy McKinney of Lompue, Calif., Lucindy McKinney of Forest Heights, Md. and Marie Harris of Washington, DC; five brothers, James H. Cooper of Irvington, N.J., Bill Cooper Jr. of Ft. Washington, Md., Wilson Cooper of Danville, David Cooper of Oxon Hill, Md., Robert Lee Cooper of Rocky Mount, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one brother, Vederick Cooper.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Beavers Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Doris L. Morrison officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park Cemetery.

CALLANDS, Va. - Cameron James Dabbs, 1 month 3 days, of 2868 Union Hall School Road, died July 15, 2002, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born June 12, 2002, in Danville, he was the son of Raymond Dabbs and Michelle Moore Dabbs, who survive.
Survivors in addition to his parents of Callands, include one sister, Ashley Dabbs of Callands; one brother, Jonathan Dabbs of Danville; grandparents, Quain and Gale Moore, both of Callands; grandmother, Connie Owens of Danville; grandfather, Raymond K. Dabbs of Danville; great-grandparents, Henry and Claudine Owen of Alton; and great-grandmother, Ruth M. Gauldin of Danville.

Madie Dodd
DRY FORK, Va. - Madie Reynolds Dodd, 89, formerly of 13608 Franklin Turnpike, died July 17, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home. She had been in declining health for two years.
Born Feb. 7, 1913 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Johnnie Namon Reynolds and Lucy Jones Reynolds.
She was married Dec. 6, 1932, to Perry Thomas Dodd, who predeceased her Feb. 14, 1976. She lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County and had retired from the former Central Apparel Company.
She was a member of the Oakes Memorial Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for several years.
She is survived by two sons, Perry Thomas Dodd Jr. and Johnnie Wayne Dodd, both of Danville; two daughters, Jean Marie Reynolds of Lynchburg and Vernona Joyce Reid of Glenn Allen; one sister, Mary R. LaPrade of Danville; one half brother, Johnnie Ray Reynolds of Axton; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by one son, Harry Ronald Dodd.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Gregory officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

J.W. Edwards, Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Joseph Walker "J.W." Edwards, Jr., 77, of 101 Forest Road Drive died Monday, July 15, 2002 at the Roman Eagle Memorial Home. He had been in declining health for nine years.
Mr. Edwards was born March 13, 1925 in Danville the son of Joseph Walker Edwards, Sr. and Annie Payne Edwards. He worked for the Virginia Highway Department as an Inspector and an Assistant Resident Engineer until 1959 and then worked for the Vulcan Materials Company in the sales department before retiring in 1990. He was a graduate of the Turbeville High School and attended Virginia Tech for two years.
Mr. Edwards was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church. He had been a member of the Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge since 1950. Survivors in addition to his mother, of Danville, include his wife, Violet Austin Edwards of the residence; two sons, Jerome C. Edwards and his wife, Nanette T. Edwards of Louisville, CO and Stewart W. Edwards and his wife, Terry L. Edwards of Fairfax; two granddaughters, Holland Edwards and Colleen Edwards of Louisville, CO and a grandson, Ryan Walker Edwards of Fairfax.
The Reverend James Gravely will conduct funeral services Friday, July 19, 2002 at 1:00 P.M. from the graveside at Highland Burial Park.

Garnett Haskins
CASCADE, Va. - Garnett Haskins, 67, of 5616 Whispering Pines Road, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at his residence.
Born June 5, 1935, in Franklin County, he was the son of Millard Haskins and Ellen Hammock Haskins.
He lived all of his life in Pittsylvania County and was the owner and operator of Haskins Well Drilling Company prior to retirement. He attended Welcome Baptist Church.
He is survived by one daughter, Gay Adkins of Cascade; two brothers, Clinton Haskins of Chatham and Raymond Haskins of Danville; three sisters, Vera H. Oakes of Keeling, Thelma H. Davis and Mary Alice H. Phelps, both of Danville; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

DANVILLE, Va. - Loretta Mae Jordan Hedrick, 71, of 141 Fuller St., died 6 p.m. Sunday, July 14, 2002, at Avis B. Adams Christian Convalescent Center in Emporia.
Born Feb. 19, 1931, in Augusta County, she was the daughter of Roy Denton Jordan and Edith Elizabeth Jackson Jordan.
She was married to Ray Kermit Hedrick Sr., who predeceased her.
She retired as a shipping clerk for Durham Hosiery in 1998 due to declining health. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include four sons, Ray Kermit Hedrick II of Petersburg, Bruce E. Miller of Gordonsville, Greg Henninger of Virginia Beach, and Terry Lea Sears of Germany; three daughters, Rose Marie Adams of Pelham, N.C., Gail Colie of Gordonsville, and Pamela Jean Anthony of Yanceyville, N.C.; one brother, Denton K. Jordan of Bonita, Calif.; one sister, Shirley Boehmer of Richland, Pa.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one son, David Allen Miller, one grandson and two sisters, Evelyn Muessie and Clarice Breeden.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Robertson officiating. Interment will follow at Lively Stones Baptist Church Cemetery in Pelham, N.C.

Lucy Marlowe
AXTON, Va. - Mary Lucy Haskins Marlowe, age 80 of 12837 Chatham Rd. Axton, Virginia, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at her residence. Mrs. Marlowe was born June 11, 1922, in Pittsylvania County.
She was the daughter of the late Jasper Haskins and Nannie Bowles Haskins. She was predeceased by her husband Cecil Anzley Marlowe.
She is survived by two daughters; Cecelia M. Donavant and her husband Billy of Martinsville and Ardie M. Prater and her husband Sherman of Axton; two sons, Lloyd A. Marlowe and his wife Jeanne of Sedona, Arizona and Ernest Cecil Marlowe and his wife Peggy of Axton; one brother, Irvin Haskins of Eden, NC and one sister, Marie H. King of Fries, VA; thirteen grandchildren, thirty great grandchildren and ten great great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one brother and one sister, Joe Haskins and Leona H. Adams, she was also predeceased by one great grandchild, Kyle Helton. She was a member of County Line Christian Church.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday July 19, 2002, at 11:00 A.M. from the County Line Christian Church by Dean Ashby, Minister and Tim Mannes, Minister.
Interment will be in the County Line Christian Church Cemetery in Axton, VA. Pallbearers are Troy, James, and Billy Donavant, Jr. Scott, Allen, Gary, Ricky, and Matt Marlowe. Honorary Pallbearers are Lee and Brandon Robbins.

SEMORA, N.C. - Lois Wade Mason, 85, of Glennie Irvin Road, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at Durham Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 21, 1917, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of James and Violet Wade.
She was married to Earnest Mason, who predeceased her, and she was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Carlease Mason of Semora; two sons, Jerome Mason of Yanceyville and Bernard Mason of Owing Mill, Md.; one sister, Jewel Cunningham of Semora; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at New Bethel Baptist Church in Alton, Va. with the Rev. Harvey Bigelow officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

DANVILLE, Va. - -Jake Samuel Nelson, 74, of 408 Cedarbrook Drive, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
Born Feb. 28, 1928, in Prospect Hill, N.C., he was the son of Arch Nelson and Mary Brooks Nelson.
He was married to Deana Jackson Nelson, who survives. He retired after 20 years in the U.S. Air Force where he served during the Korean War. He had lived in Danville since 1967 and was bookkeeper for Jamerson White Land Developer. He was a member of Stokesland Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and treasurer, and he was also a member of the Air Force Association.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one daughter, Jackie Gambrell of Danville; one stepdaughter, Bonnie Purnell of Mass.; one brother, John Nelson of Wilmington, N.C.; two sisters, Christine Straughn and Lucille Nelson, both of Burlington, N.C.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Stokesland Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Pittman and the Rev. J. C. Raper officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors by American Legion Dan River Post #1097 honor guard.

Richard Stegall
DANVILLE, Va. - Richard Lee Stegall, 82, of 965 Orphanage Road, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at UVA Hospital in Charlottesville following two weeks of declining health and two weeks in the hospital.
Born July 11, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Clarence G. Stegall and Hattie Holley Stegall, who predeceased him.
He was married April 8, 1944, to Gladys Holley Stegall, who survives. Mr. Stegall lived his life in the Pittsylvania County and Danville area where prior to his retirement he was employed with Pet Dairy as a refrigeration mechanic. Mr. Stegall was a member of Malmaison Primitive Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon. He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II and served in the 13th Infantry division.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include daughter and husband, Rachel S. Wimmer and Mike Wimmer of Danville; granddaughter and husband, Michelle W. Dison and Shawn Dison of Kernersville, NC; granddaughter, Amy Wimmer of Henderson, NC; great granddaughter, Kiera Nicole Dison of Kernersville, NC; two brothers, Charlie Stegall of Whitmell and William Stegall of Danville; and two sisters, Janie S. Wyatt of Danville, and Irene S. Oakes of Museville.
He was predeceased by one son, Ricky Wayne Stegall; one brother, Percy Stegall; and one sister, Virginia S. Turner.
The funeral will be held Thursday, July 18, 2002, at 2:00 PM at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by Elder Marvin Brumfield, Elder C.B. Davis and Elder Raymond Goad.
Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.
