Sara Price Graham

GRETNA, Va. - Sara Price Graham, 81, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at Gretna Health Care Center.

Born July 13, 1921, in Tams, W.Va., she was a daughter of Clyde Powell Price Sr. and Bessie Gay Price.

She was a homemaker and a former Precinct worker in Romney, W.Va. She was a member of Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a son, Samuel M. Graham Jr. of Fredericksburg; a daughter, Susan G. Powell of Houston, Texas; three brothers, James G. Price of Akron, Ohio, Douglas S. Price Sr. and Clyde P. Price Jr., both of Gretna; a sister, Dorothy P. Dalton of Gretna; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by a brother, Ray Price.

The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Gretna Burial Park with the Rev. Charles Haley officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her brother, Douglas S. Price Sr., 104 Gay St.

Vance Lee Hudson

DANVILLE, Va. - Vance Lee Hudson, 85, of 331 Norwood Drive, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002 at the University of Virginia Medical Center after being in declining health for several weeks.

Born Jan. 28, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Edward Hudson and Louvanna Collins Hudson.

He had lived in the Danville area for the last 20 years, and prior to his retirement worked for Associated Transport. He was a member of the Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church.

He was a World War II veteran.

He was married to Irene Carter Hudson, who predeceased him.

He is survived by one daughter, Vanglia Spears of Clearwater, Fla. and one grandchild.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by three brothers, Clyde F. Hudson, Elwood S. Hudson and Wilton B. Hudson and two sisters, Edna Ruth Hudson and Ruby Hudson McDowell.

The chapel service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.

Stella Deboe Mobley

DANVILLE, Va. - Stella Deboe Mobley, 81, of 568 Elizabeth St. Ext., died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for two months and in the hospital since Nov. 30.

Born May 21, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Haywood Cook, stepfather, and Hettie Deboe Cook.

She was of the Baptist faith. She lived most of her life in Danville.

She was retired from Dan River Mills, Inc., where she worked in No. 4 Gray as an inspector.

She married Garland Dove Mobley on Oct. 12, 1940. He predeceased her Aug. 31, 2002.

She is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Rebecca Mobley, of the residence; one brother, Howard Hoskins of Halifax; three sisters, Neva H. Davis of Danville, Ruby C. Wilkerson of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Margie C. Marshall of Freemont, Calif.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by three brothers and four sisters.

The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Gilmer Setliff officiating.

The family will be at the residence.

Luther Earl Philpott Sr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Luther Earl Philpott Sr., 65, of 61 Shumate St., died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center after three weeks of declining health and one week in the hospital.

Born March 26, 1937, in Penhook, he was the son of Benjamin Harrison Philpott and Noradell Adkins Philpott.

He moved to the Danville area in 1969, where prior to his retirement in 1992, he was employed with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. He was a member of the U.R.W. #831 and was of the Baptist faith.

He married Nancy Louise Ray Philpott on March 10, 1956.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by three sons, Luther Earl Philpott Jr. of Danville, Benny J. Philpott of Callands and Gerald Wayne Philpott of the residence; a daughter, Debbie P. Dew of Brosville; three brothers, Glenn T. Philpott of Danville, Saford W. Philpott of Dry Fork and Clayton G. Philpott of Callands; four sisters, Levita P. Reynolds of Martinsville, Ruby P. Robertson of Penhook, Margaret P. Hines of Providence, N.C. and Patsy P. Tankersley of Hardy; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth M. Philpott.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Rick Lancaster and the Rev. Gil Hawks officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Earnest W. Trammell

DANVILLE, Va. - Earnest W. Trammell, 57, of 127 Franklin Turnpike, died Sunday. Dec. 29, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center after one week in the hospital. He had been in declining health since August.

Born Nov. 9, 1945, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Edward W. Trammell and Cora Phelps Trammell.

He was born in the Mount Cross community of Pittsylvania County, where he lived most of his life. He was a custodian for Dan River, Inc. for 30 years and retired on disability Aug. 24, 2002. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was married to Shirley Walker Trammell, who predeceased him Aug. 29, 1992.

He is survived by a sister, Bonnie Trammell Wilson of Whitmell; two brothers, Edward Clifton Trammell of Keeling and Harry Eugene Trammell of Ringgold and a number of nieces and nephews.

The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Gilmore Hundley officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his sister, Bonnie T. Wilson, 564 Bowl Drive, Whitmell.

Master Samuel Whitfield III

DANVILLE, Va. - Master Samuel B. Whitfield III, affectionately known as "Lil Sammy," 1, of 1106 Wiley Ave., died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002 at the Danville Regional Medical Center Emergency Room.

Born July 5, 2001, in Danville, he was the son of Samuel B. Whitfield Jr. and Wanda Harris Whitfield, who both survive.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by three sisters, Davielle Johnson and Dakoiya Ross, both of Danville and Sharica Whitfield of New Rochelle, N.Y.; one brother, Donald Ross of Danville; and grandparents, Gloria and James Taylor of New Rochelle, N.Y. and Vanderbilt "Bill" Dawson of Wilson, N.C. and Marguerite Whitfield of Mount Vernon, N.Y.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with Bishop John L. Morton officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Franklin Delanore Whitt

BOYDTON, Va. - Franklin Delanore Whitt, 69, of 370 Madison St., died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at Melody Manor Rest Home.

Born April 24, 1933, in Halifax County, he was a son of Johnny Whitt and Willie Ida Ford Whitt.

He was a retired farmer and a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church.

He is survived by two brothers, John Whitt of South Boston and Talmadge Whitt of Vernon Hill; and four sisters, Hazel Whitt, Alma Terry and Gladys Lewis, all of South Boston and Bobbie Jean Lunsford of Stem, N.C.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Rufus Whitt, William Whitt and Levi Whitt.

The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Shady Grove U.M.C. Cemetery with the Rev. Don Davidson officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Brooks Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. John Whitt, 1941 Eastover Drive, South Boston.

Edna Beggarly

DANVILLE, Va. - Edna Reaves Wood Beggarly, 84, of 2526 North Main St., died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home following two years of declining health.

Born Feb. 21, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Henry Wood and Eva Carter Wood.

She had lived her entire life in Danville and Pittsylvania County and was a homemaker.

She is survived by three daughters, Janie B. Kendrick of Danville, Connie B. Somoza of Marietta, Ga. and Glenda B. Hardison of Gretna; two sons, Ernest W. Beggarly Jr. of Martinsville and Samuel F. Beggarly of Danville; one sister, Frances W. Coward of Crestline, Calif.; one brother, Julian E. Wood of Dry Fork; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two daughters, Ann Jacqueline Beggarly and Sara B. Payne.

The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Danville Memorial Gardens with Mr. John Searcy and Mr. Garland Walker officiating.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence of her daughter, 111 Robinwood Place in Shadowwood.

Cameron Dabbs

CALLANDS, Va. - Cameron James Dabbs, 1 month 3 days, of 3868 Union Hall School Road, died July 15, 2002, at Duke University Medical Center.

Born June 12, 2002, in Danville, he was the son of Raymond Dabbs and Michelle Moore Dabbs, who survive.

Survivors in addition to his parents of Callands, include one sister, Ashley Dabbs of Callands; grandparents, Quain and Gale Moore, both of Callands; grandfather, Raymond K. Dabbs of Danville; great-grandparents, Henry and Claudine Owen of Alton; and great-grandmother, Ruth M. Gauldin of Danville.

The graveside service was held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mountain View Cemetery with the Rev. Randy Williams officiating.

Loren Dalton

PULASKI, Va. - Loren Adrian (L.A.) Dalton, age 79, of Pulaski, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, in a Pulaski Hospital. He was a retired employee of The Allegheany Bookstore, and was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Surviving are a brother, Thomas Lee Dalton, Axton; a special niece, Janice Rakes, Providence, N.C. along with other nieces, nephews and many friends. Special friends, Paul and Linda Smith, his godchildren Susan Rodgers and Chris Smith also survive.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20, 2002, at the DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the hour of the service Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

Madie Dodd

DRY FORK, Va. - Madie Reynolds Dodd, 89, of 13608 Franklin Turnpike, died July 17, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home. She had been in declining health for two years.

Born Feb. 7, 1913 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Johnnie Namon Reynolds and Lucy Jones Reynolds.

She was married Dec. 6, 1932, to Perry Thomas Dodd, who predeceased her Feb. 14, 1976. She lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County and had retired from the former Central Apparel Company. She was a member of the Oakes Memorial Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for several years.

She is survived by two sons, Perry Thomas Dodd Jr. and Johnnie Wayne Dodd, both of Danville; two daughters, Jean Marie Reynolds of Lynchburg and Vernona Joyce Reid of Glenn Allen; one sister, Mary R. LaPrade of Danville; one half brother, Johnnie Ray Reynolds of Axton; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by one son, Harry Ronald Dodd.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Gregory officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

The family received friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and will receive friends at other times at the residence of her son, Perry Dodd, 6661 Whitmell School Road, Danville.

Coneva Gibson

CHATHAM, Va. - Coneva Rigney Gibson, age 85 of 10365 Anderson Mill Road, Chatham, Virginia, died Thursday, July 17, 2002, at the Riverside Health Care Center. Mrs. Gibson was born August 26, 1916, in Pittsylvania County. She was the daughter of the late Roley Rigney and Mollie Gibson Rigney. She was predeceased by her husband General Gibson. She is survived by one son, Austin Gibson and his wife, Doris Marie Gibson of Chatham; two daughters, Daisy G. Atkins of Martinsville, and Evelina G. Ratcliff and her husband Harvey W. Ratcliff of Martinsville; one sister, Irene R. Scearce of Dry Fork; ten grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and eleven great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sons, Oakley J. Gibson, and Roley Junior Gibson; she was also predeceased by one daughter, Leonia Gibson and was predeceased by one granddaughter, Betty Adkins and her son-in-law Harold Adkins. She was a member of Oak Ridge Christian Church.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, July 20, 2002, at 11:00 A.M. From the Scott Funeral Home Chapel by J. D. Hunt, III, Minister. Interment will be in the Gibson Family Cemetery in Chatham, Virginia. The family will receive friends Friday, July 20, 2002, from 7 to 8 P.M. at Scott Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence of her son, Austin Gibson, 10365 Anderson Mill Road, Chatham, VA. Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Garnett Haskins

CASCADE, Va. - Garnett Haskins, 67, of 5616 Whispering Pines Road, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at his residence.

Born June 5, 1935, in Franklin County, he was the son of Millard Haskins and Ellen Hammock Haskins.

He lived all of his life in Pittsylvania County and was the owner and operator of Haskins Well Drilling Company prior to retirement. He attended Welcome Baptist Church.

He is survived by one daughter, Gay Adkins of Cascade; two brothers, Clinton Haskins of Chatham and Raymond Haskins of Danville; three sisters, Vera H. Oakes of Keeling, Thelma H. Davis and Mary Alice H. Phelps, both of Danville; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Huffey officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence of his brother, 1089 Sandy Creek Road.

Lillie Lee

CHATHAM, Va. - Lillie Carter Lee, 75, of 329 Hickory Road, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, N.C.

Born Jan. 26, 1927, in Philadelphia, Penn., she was the daughter of James L. and Isabelle Carter.

She was married to Pastor William H. Lee Jr., who survives. She was a member of House of Prayer Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three daughters, Jewel Ramsey and Cecelia Younger, both of Chatham, and Isabelle Wright of Danville; six sons, James H. Carter of Chatham, H. Glenn Carter of Delaware, Henry L. Carter of Killeen, Texas, Steven L. Wilson of the residence, Bishop John Morton of Danville, and James W. Carter of Highpoint, N.C.; 23 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Saturday at Green Rock Pentecostal Faith Church with the Rev. William H. Lee Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Burial Park.

A viewing will be held 7-8 p.m. Friday at Howerton Funeral Home Chapel. The family is at the residence of Donald Younger, 349 Huntstown Road, Chatham.
