GRETNA, Va. - Samuel Glenn Shelhorse, 48, of 213 Leftwich St., died Saturday, May 4, 2002, at the residence.
Born Nov. 7, 1953, in Lynchburg, he was a son of Mary Johnson Shelhorse, who survives, and Hugh Daniel Shelhorse, who predeceased him.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Gretna, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and a former aviation technician with Chevron Oil Co.
Survivors, in addition to his mother of the residence, include two sons, Andrew Shelton and Brandon Shelton, both of Gretna; four brothers, Daniel Shelhorse, Kenneth Shelhorse and Barney Shelhorse, all of Gretna, and Michael Shelhorse of Kingsport, Tenn.; and two sisters, Shelba Shelhorse of Atlanta and Mary Alice Barber of Glenview, Ill.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Charles Ellis officiating. Interment will follow at Gretna Burial Park.

Cora Stephens
DANVILLE, Va. - Cora Loretta Stephens, 73, of 10 Cardwell St., died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 28, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Minnie Stephens and Arlove Giggetts Stephens.
Survivors include five daughters, Pamela Stephens, Joyce Wimbush, Deborah Stephens, Delbra Averette and Valerie Stephens, all of Danville; four sons, Percy Stephens of Dallas, Tyrone Stephens and Curtis Stephens, both of Danville, and Carl Stephens of Johnson City, Tenn.; three sisters, Geraldine Logan of Ringgold, Lelia Plunkett of Chatham and Gladys Brown of Danville; three brothers, Patrick Stephens of South Boston, Johnnie Stephens of Johnson City, Tenn. and Willie Neal Stephens of Danville.
The funeral will be held Monday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerome Morris officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Anne Sink Bell
DANVILLE, Va. - Anne S. Bell, 89, passed away peacefully on Tuesday afternoon, April 23, 2002 of natural causes.
She had been a member of the Mt. Cross Road community for over fifty years. Mrs. Bell served Dan River, Inc., for thirty-five years and completed her career as secretary to the Director of Personnel. She was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church for over fifty years and served as the Treasurer of the United Methodist Women for a number of years. Mrs. Bell was a charter member of ABWA the Danville Chapter.
She was born, January 8, 1913 in Salisbury, NC to the late George Ernest Sink and Lucy Brandon Sink. Her brother George Gilbert Sink preceded her in death. She was the wife of William Taft Bell of Danville, for sixty-five years, who survives. She is also survived by her children, Frances Anne Bell Simms of Arlington, and George Robert Bell of Danville; her brother, CDR. Robert Elwood Sink of San Diego, CA. Her Legacy includes four grandchildren: Melissa Dee Bell of Danville, George Robert Bell, Jr. and William Frederick Bell both of Providence, NC and Shannon Lara Simms of Arlington.
The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home, 215 West Main Street on Friday evening, April 26 from 6-8 p.m. The funeral will be conducted at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, Mt. Cross Road, on Saturday morning, April 27 at 11:00 a.m. by the Rev. Wayne Crews. Interment of the remains will follow at the family plot in Salisbury, N.C. on Monday.

Elizabeth Briggs
LEASBURG, N.C. - Elizabeth Daniel Briggs 80, died Tuesday April 23, 2002 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home in Danville following several years of declining health.
She was born in Person County on December 31, 1921 to Ralph Thomas and Mary Sue Daniel. She grew up in the Pelham Community of Caswell County and moved to Leasburg after her marriage to Clyde Curtis Briggs. She graduated from Cobb Memorial School and attended Averett College. She was a homemaker and partner in the family owned business of Briggs General Merchandise, a country store in Leasburg. She was an active member of Leasburg United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Caswell County Historical Society, Caswell County Homemakers Club, and Caswell County Senior Citizens.
Funeral services will be Friday 3 p.m. at Leasburg United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jeanne Neal officiating. Interment will follow in Leasburg Cemetery.
Elizabeth is survived by two daughters, Betty B. Schledorn and her husband Richard A. Schledorn of Danville, Ann B. Taube and her husband Larry R. Taube of Greensboro, one sister Mary Ethel Sakellaris of Danville; four grandchildren, Jennifer S. Toney of Panama City, Florida, Beth S. Hicks of Lexington and Allison D. Taube and Ryan S. Taube, both of Greensboro; and two great-grandchildren Stefen and Casey Toney.
Mrs. Briggs was predeceased by her husband of 36 years Clyde Curtis Briggs and one brother Robert Howard Daniel.
The family will receive friends Thursday 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home, Yanceyville.

Mamie Bustard
RICHMOND, Va. - Mamie Patterson Bustard, 82, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002 in Richmond.
She was a daughter of Richard R. and Mamie Thames Patterson.
She was married to Clarke A. Bustard Jr., who predeceased her. She attended Stratford College in Danville. In Richmond she was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church and had been a volunteer at Retreat Hospital.
She is survived by a daughter, Sally Bustard Crowell of Richmond; a son, Clarke A. Bustard III of Ashland; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Richmond.

Sarah Dickerson
GRETNA, Va. - Sarah Jane Carter Dickerson, 92, of Kings Court Apt. 17, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at the residence.
Born June 18, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Lovell R. Carter and Clementine Hubard Carter.
She was married to Ocie Dickerson, who predeceased her.
Survivors include three daughters, Florine Callands of Upper Marlboro, Md., Sharon Gilbert of Germantown, Md. and Deloris Dickerson of Mitchelville, Md.; three sons, Odell Dickerson of Baltimore, William Dickerson of Lanham, Md. and Troy Dickerson of Englewood, N.J.; one granddaughter; and 15 great grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Burnett Clark officiating. Interment will follow at Carter-Logan Family Cemetery in Gretna.

Gladys Hodges
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Gladys Yancey Bracey Hodges died at her residence at The Colonnades in Charlottesville on April 21, 2002.
She was born on August 30, 1904 in South Hill, Va. to the late Robert Edward Yancey and Otelia Harris Yancey. She was the widow of Dr. Lucius H. Bracey and then of Y. Melvin Hodges, both of South Hill. Her brother, Robert Yancey, and six sisters, Willie Yancey, Olive Vassar, Grace Pleasants, Mary Allen, Louise Dugger, and Frances Poffenberger preceded her in death.
Mrs. Hodges was a graduate of Virginia Intermont College and Roanoke College. She was an accomplished musician and studied piano and voice with Quincy Cole in Richmond.
Mrs. Hodges is survived by one daughter, Jean B. Read of Danville; one son, Lucius H. Bracey Jr. and his wife Pamela of Charlottesville; three grandchildren, L. Gregory Read of Danville, Keturah Hart Bracey of San Francisco, and Daniel Lucius Edward Bracey of Charlottesville. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and special friends.

Sandra ‘Sandy' McDowell
ELON COLLEGE, N.C. - Sandra "Sandy" Turpin McDowell, 51, of 241 Milesville Road, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at the residence.
Born June 3, 1950, in Danville, she was a daughter of Irvin Turpin and Ruby Collins Stratton.
She lived most of her life in Danville and worked as a nurse before becoming disabled. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Denise Yarbrough of Fayetteville and Stephanie Wallace of Danville, Va.; one son, Jason McDowell of Thomasville; two sisters, Kathy Combe of Elon College and Lisa Stratton of Rock Hill, S.C.; and three grandchildren.
The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne Hall officiating. Interment will be private.
The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and other times will be at the residence of Videl Pizzino, 202 Motley Ave.

Richie Moore
RINGGOLD, Va. - Richard "Richie" David Moore, 39, of 416 Cedar Road, died Sunday, April 14, 2002 at the residence of a friend on Major Court.
Born December 13, 1962 in Danville, he was a son of David Irvin Moore, who survives, and Ennis Crockett Moore, who predeceased him.
He had lived all of his life in Pittsylvania County and Danville and was employed by Allen's Pools & Repairs. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to his father of Ringgold, include one sister, Brenda Moore Warren of Providence, N.C.; and one daughter, Kayla Moore.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Moore Family Cemetery on Cedar Road in the Mountain Hill community with the Rev. Herschel Stone officiating.

Virginia Motley
DANVILLE, Va. - Virginia Henderson Motley, 95, of 238 Crossland Avenue, died on April 23, 2002, in Stratford Health Care following several years of declining health and 12 days in the hospital.
Born on Sept. 9, 1906, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Webster Henderson and the late Sarah Myer Henderson.
She was married on July 14, 1928, to the late Zenas Timothy Motley, who died on April 5, 1997. Mrs. Motley had lived all of her life in the Blairs Community of Pittsylvania County and in Danville where she was a homemaker. Mrs. Motley was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Carroll H. Motley & wife Irene of Lynchburg, Va., and Philip D. Motley & wife Margaret of Danville, Va.; one daughter, Virginia M. Blair & husband Bobby of Danville, Va.; daughter in law, Nancy F. Motley of Danville, Va.; one sister, Louise H. Blankenship of Danville, Va.; 8 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.
She was predeceased in addition to her parents and husband by one son Donald J. Motley and one granddaughter Martha Frances Motley, seven sisters Lillie H. Hill, Elizabeth H. Cassada, Bertha H. Compton, Ethel Henderson, Myrtle H. Mylum, Mary H. Blankenship and Evelyn H. Wiles and by four brothers Ellis Henderson, Sumpter Henderson, Lawrence Henderson and Frank Henderson.
The funeral will be held Friday, April 26th at 2:00 p.m. from the graveside in Highland Burial Park by the Reverend Dr. A.C. Smith & Reverend Rick Lancaster. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

Lillie Robinette
DANVILLE, Va. - Lillie Mae Thompson Robinette, age 95, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002 at the Roman Eagle Memorial Home. She had been a resident there for the past three years.
She was born in Pittsylvania County, Va. November 19, 1906, a daughter of the late George Eddie Thompson and Ada Lee Thompson.
Mrs. Robinette was the oldest surviving member of The College Park Baptist Church. She was retired from Thalhimer's and Southern Department Store as a sales associate. She was married to the late Arthur F. Robinette who died September 10, 1973.
Surviving are two sons: A. F. "Bobby" Robinette and George L. Robinette, both of Danville. Six grandchildren: Susan R. Owen, Steve Robinette, Sherry R. Howard, Cynthia "Cindy" R. Moshenek, Sarah Lee R. Michaels and Ruth Lee R. Spivey. Twelve great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Mrs. Robinette was predeceased by four brothers and five sisters.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 25, 2002 at 11 a.m. from the graveside at Highland Burial Park by the Reverend James Hewitt.

DANVILLE, Va. - Cleonia Thomas Graves, 78, of 1248 West Stokes Street, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at her residence.
Born in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Randolph and Pearl Davis Thomas.
She was married to Felix Graves, who predeceased her. She was a retired employee of Dimon Inc.
Survivors include one adopted son, Robert Graves of Danville; and one granddaughter.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday July 23, 2002, at Loyal Baptist Church with the Rev. Lovell Maxwell officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Herman Keen
DANVILLE, Va. - Herman Burnell Keen, 80, of 261 Belmede Court, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 1, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Henry and Fliney Adams Keen.
He was married to Janie F. Keen, who predeceased him.
He is survived by six daughters, Mary Keen, Donna Reynolds, Martha White, Kathy Hightower, and Holly Glass, all of Danville and Selma Thomas of Milton, N.C.; two sons, Costa Keen and George Keen, both of Danville; and one brother, George Keen of Pittsburgh, Penn.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at Camp Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie Sherman officiating. Interment will follow in the Floral Hills Memory Garden Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 29 honor guard.

DANVILLE, Va. - Bernice Johnson Philby, 93, of 103 Hayes Court, died July 20, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born on February 6, 1909, in Sioux City, Iowa, she was a daughter of Robert H. Johnson and Anna S. Johnson.
She was predeceased by her husband, Loran Philby. She attended Fairview United Methodist Church.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Porter and two brothers, Milton Johnson and Clarence Johnson.
The graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Linwood Daniel officiating.
