Susan Anderson
AMHURST, Va. - Susan Hughes Anderson, 39, of 173 Brockman Park Drive, died June 27, 2002, at Lynchburg General Hospital following five years of declining health.
Born Aug. 9, 1962, in Danville, she was the daughter of George Alfred Anderson, who survives, and the late Dorothy Hundley Anderson.
She had lived in Danville prior to moving to Lynchburg in 1983. She taught in the Campbell County school system for 10 years prior to her decline in health. She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her father of Sutherlin, survivors include her stepmother, Sandra S. Anderson of Sutherlin; two sisters, Cynthia G. Anderson and Lisa A. Moore, both of Lynchburg; and one brother, A. Michael Wilson of Nashville, Tenn.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with Dr. Phill Duckett officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Roy Atwater
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Roy Vincent Atwater, 85, of 2512 County Home Road, died Friday, June 28, 2002, at Duke University Medical Center following a period of declining health.
Born July 11, 1916, in Chatham County, he was the son of David M. and Isma Andrews Atwater.
He was a member of Yanceyville Presbyterian Church, a past Rotarian, a member of the Lions Club of Siler City and co-founder of Royal Hosiery Mill of Yanceyville. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II.
Survivors include two sons, W. David "Chip" Atwater and Mark V. Atwater, both of Yanceyville; four grandchildren; one brother, Walter M. Atwater of Chapel Hill; and former wife, Louise M. Atwater of Yanceyville.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Bill and Al Atwater, and one sister, Eugenia Humphries.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Harrelson Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Yanceyville Presbyterian Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 6-7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

RICHMOND, Va. - Jerry Wayne Dean, 46, of 207B East 10th St., died at the residence.
Born Aug. 8, 1955, in Elwood, Ind., he was the son of Patricia "Patty" Baugher Dean, who survives, and the late Alva Wayne Dean.
He was a retired computer technician for the Richmond Times-Dispatch and was a member of Community Baptist Church in Richmond and was a volunteer with Good Samaritan of Richmond.
In addition to his mother of South Boston, survivors include two daughters, Tara Gretchen Dean and Melissa Opal Dean, both of Richmond; three sisters, Cindy Throckmorton of Scottsburg, Diana Cole of Virgilina, and Jennie Knutti of South Boston; and one brother, Tommy Dean of Scottsburg.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Grace Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack Stewart officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Rev. Albert Ray Miller
BOONES MILL, Va. - Rev. Albert Ray Miller, 74, died Friday, June 28, 2002, at his residence.
He was married to Goldia Miller, who survives. He was a retired United Methodist minister, pastoring at Red Valley Rehobeth and Fork Mountain Churches in Franklin County. He also pastored Concord United Methodist Church in Chatham and Westover Hills in Danville.
In addition to his wife, survivors include daughters, Janet Stepp of Melbourne, Fla., Deborah Vaughan of Roanoke, and Rebecca Altice of Rocky Mount; one son, Lloyd "Butch" Miller of Rocky Mount; ten grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Burton Miller of Lansing, N.C.; sisters, Pauline Ours of York, Pa., and Geneva Stamper of New Port Richey, Fla.
He was predeceased by one son, Albert Ray Miller Jr.
The funeral will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at Flora Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dr. J. Wesley Inge and the Rev. Ho J. Lee officiating. Interment will follow at Red Valley United Methodist Church cemetery.

David C. Moore
GRETNA, Va. - David Crockett Moore, 88, of 5901 Rockford School Road, died Friday, June 28, 2002, at Gretna Health Care Center.
Born March 2, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Ike Moore and Vera Gibson Moore.
He was married to Missouri Bowen Moore, who survives. He was a retired employee of the Lane Company and a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Gretna.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, David Lee Moore of Gretna and Paul Leslie Moore of Hurt; two sisters, Ann Roach and Nannie Belle Roach, both of Gretna; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by seven brothers, Edward Moore, Chillie Moore, Norwood Moore, Raleigh Moore, Richard Moore, Stiley Moore and Clarence Moore; and two sisters, Isabelle Lumpkin and Edith Tucker.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clyde Crowder and the Rev. Bert Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Greenpond Baptist Church cemetery.

Ethel Ramsey
DANVILLE, Va. - Ethel Dalton Ramsey, 97, formerly of 212 Mountain Hill Road, died Thursday, June 27, 2002, at Piney Forest Health Care Center following declining health for over two years and three years at Piney Forest.
Born Aug. 8, 1904, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William Douglas Dalton and Lucy Goad Dalton.
She was married to Otis Harold Ramsey, who predeceased her. She had lived in Pittsylvania County prior to moving to Milton, N.C. to live for several years and then moving back to Danville. She attended Baptist Tabernacle for a number of years.
Survivors include two grandsons, Horace Lea Foster of Danville and John Steven Foster of North Carolina; one granddaughter, Margaret Foster Hudgins of Herndon; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one daughter, Margaret A. Foster.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Darrell Campbell officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

DANVILLE, Va. - Laura Ray, 66, of 320 Williams Drive, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born April 28, 1936, in Mount Airy, N.C., she was the daughter of Willie Williams and Nonnie Flippen Williams.
She was a registered nurse prior to her retirement.
Survivors include one brother, Olander Williams of Philadelphia.

Larry S. Rogers
DRY FORK, Va. - Larry S. Rogers, 53, of 1081 Hill Creek Road, died unexpectedly Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 10, 1948, in Danville, he was the son of Booker Rogers and Helen Oliver Rogers.
He was married to Linda Dixon Rogers, who survives. He was employed for many years at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Plant prior to his retirement on disability and was a retired veteran of the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Dedric T. Rogers of Germany, Derrick N. Rogers and Jason D. Rogers, both of the residence; three sisters, Annie Inge of Danville, Clarice Mitchell of Philadelphia, and Camilla Curry of East End Richmond.
He was predeceased by one sister, Bernice McCullough.
The funeral will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Bethel United Way of the Cross Church on Mount Cross Road with the Rev. H. Donald Coletrane of the St. Matthews Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow at Dixon Family cemetery with military honors performed by American Legion Post 29 Honor Guard.

CULPEPER, Va. - Talitha Grubb Blair, 95, formerly of Chatham, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community.
Born May 28, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Walker Grubb and Maggie Reynolds Grubb.
She was married to Britain Blair, who predeceased her. She was a member of Hollywood Baptist Church. She worked for a number of years with the Women's Missionaries Union of Virginia.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hollywood Baptist Church, with the Rev. Larry Davis and the Rev. Haywood J. Alcorn officiating. Interment will follow at Grubb Family Cemetery in Chatham.

Otway Edward Hatcher
GOOCHLAND COUNTY, Va. - Otway Edward Hatcher passed away at his residence, Midway Farm, in Goochland County at the age of 92.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Altice Hatcher.
Mr. Hatcher is survived by his daughters, Michaelle Taylor and her husband Robert (North Carolina); Donna Scott and her husband, Jim (Goochland County); and son Ned Hatcher and his wife, Jennifer (Richmond); a granddaughter, Leigh Strawderman and two grandsons, Ryan and Shannon Hatcher; and Ryan and Shannon's mother, Brenda Hatcher.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, July 2, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. in Mountain View Cemetery by the Rev. David Abernathy.

RUFFIN, N.C. - Jimmy Graves Johnston, 54, of 10278 Highway 158 West died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at his residence following a short period of declining health.
Born April 23, 1948, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was a son of Esther Johnston Farabow, who survives, and James P. Johnston, who predeceased him.
He was married to Vivian D. Johnston, who survives. He was a loom fixer for the past six years at Reidsville Weaving (Burlington Industries) in Reidsville. He was a graduate of Chatham High School and was of the Jehovah Witness faith.
Survivors, in addition to his mother and his wife of the residence, include one daughter Jennifer L. Stevens of Danville, Va.; one son, Brian K. Johnston of Dry Fork, Va.; one sister, Irene W. Lynch of Danville; and one brother, Larry W. Johnston of Winston-Salem; and two grandchildren.

DANVILLE, Va. - Joshua Wayne Powell, 16, of 499 Corning Drive, died Saturday night, June 29, 2002, at the Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C. He had been in declining health for two years.
Born Sept. 7, 1985, in Portsmouth, he was a son of Mark A. Powell and Angela Rigney Wilkerson, who both survive.
He had lived in Danville most of his life and was a 10th grade student at George Washington High School and an active member of the J.R.O.T.C.
Survivors, in addition to his father of Philadelphia and his mother of the residence, include one stepfather, Butch Wilkerson of the residence; one stepmother, Cindy Powell of Philadelphia; one maternal grandmother, Beulah Rigney of Brosville; and paternal grandparents, Phil and Gloria Shelton of Blairs; one brother, Tony R. Powell of Danville; three stepbrothers, Joey Wilkerson and Timmy Wilkerson, both of Danville, and Allen Wilkerson of the residence; one stepsister, Michelle Wilkerson of New York; one half sister, Miriam Powell of Philadelphia; and one half brother, Sammy Powell of Philadelphia.

Ethel Hopkins Adams
DANVILLE, Va. - Ethel Hopkins Adams, 85, of 1948 River Ridge Road, died Nov. 15, 2002, at Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge.
Born Oct. 3, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William Henry Hopkins and Mary Susie Gravely Hopkins.
She was employed at American Furniture Company - Red Level Plant for many years prior to her retirement. She was a member of Mt. Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church where she served as one of the Church Mothers.
She was married to Zechariah T. Adams, who predeceased her.
She is survived by four daughters, Lottie Hayes of the residence, Rosylind Fitz of Danville, the Rev. Pauline Couch and Barbara Spence, both of Pleasantville, N.J.; two sons, Andrew Adams of Dale City and Ronald Adams of Columbia, S.C.; a sister, Eva H. Thomas of Charlottesville; two brothers, Daniel G. Hopkins of Danville and Robert E. Hopkins of Perris, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by eight brothers and sisters.
