Carroll Scruggs
BURLINGTON, N.C. - Carroll Vernon Scruggs, 69, of 812 Isley School Road, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at Duke University Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
A native of Gretna, VA, he was the husband of Mrs. Elna Mayhew Scruggs who survives and the son of the late Wade Crawford and Effie Shelton Scruggs.
He retired from Burlington Industries as a supervisor of the Pioneer Plant. He was a member of Glencoe Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife of the home along with three sons, Tom Scruggs and his wife, Terry, of Raleigh, Jim Scruggs and his wife, Beth, of Elon, and John Scruggs and his wife, Diana, of Burlington; five grandchildren, Kelly Klick, Kristin Scruggs, Erin Scruggs, Hanna Scruggs, and Sara Scruggs; two sisters, Mrs. Betty Frances Toler of Columbia, SC and Mrs. Deborah Jefferson of Gretna, VA; and a brother, W.C. Scruggs of Gretna, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Berkley Lee Scruggs.
The funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, July 13, 2002 at Glencoe Baptist Church by the Rev. Darrell Massey and the Rev. Felton Massey.
A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Gretna Burial Park in Gretna, Va. The family will receive friends at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday and at other times at the home.

George Tickle Sr.
PROVIDENCE, N.C. - George William Tickle Sr., 78, of 1508 Walters Mill Road, died Thursday, July 11, 2002, at VA Hospital in Durham.
Born April 19, 1924, in Draper, he was the son of John Tickle and Hattie Lee Jones Tickle.
He was married to Flora Wilson Tickle, who survives. He lived most of his life in Florida and the Danville, Va. area. He retired from the City of Lakeland, Fla., as groundskeeper. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II and the Korean War. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Fraternal Order of Redmen, Poquoson Tribe #124.
He had been in declining health for several years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, George William Tickle Jr. of Pelham, David "Tony" Tickle of Blanch, and Carl Tickle of Brosville, Va.; two daughters, Candace Moore of Ruffin, and Vellanie "Suzi" Kirkland of Auburndale, Fla.; two brothers, Thomas Tickle of Danville, Va., and Lawrence Tickle of Reidsville; two sisters, Frances Hodges of Ringgold, Va. and Margie Moore of Danville, Va.; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, Robert Tickle; two brothers, Carl Tickle and Howard Tickle.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Community Baptist Church in Caswell County with the Rev. Mark Smith officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence of Tony Tickle, 2996 Culver Road in Blanch.

Willie Elmore Fitzgerald
RINGGOLD, Va. - Willie Elmore Fitzgerald, 95, of 1757 Ringgold Depot Road died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 14, 1907 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Walter Fitzgerald and Nancy Adams Fitzgerald.
Prior to his retirement, he worked as a farmer and also at Swicegood Funeral Home for numerous years.
He was married to Julia Fitzgerald, who survives. In addition, he is survived by two daughters, Barbara Williams of Ringgold, Annie Mae Davis of Washington, D.C. and two sons, James Saunders of Ringgold and Clarence Saunders of Dry Fork.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Howard Graves officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Robert W. Huckabee
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert W. Huckabee, age 89, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born on March 14, 1913, in Idabell, Okla., he was the son of William Huckabee and Elizabeth Cornelias Huckabee.
He owned and operated a farm. He was a member of West Main Baptist Church.
He was married to Alice E. Huckabee, who survives. He is also survived by a son, Malcolm Huckabee of Danville, two brothers, Charles Huckabee of Bruster, Wash. and Cecil Huckabee of Goddey, Texas; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Laquita Kirkland and a son, Ronald Lee Huckabee.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at West Main Baptist Church with the Rev. Bruce Wilson officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will be at the son's residence, 121 Ginger Drive.
The family suggests that memorials be made to Danville Mental Health-Alzheimer's Support Groups.

Jean Fuchs Kushner
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Jean Fuchs Kushner, 85, of Daytona Beach, formerly of Danville, died November 24 after declining health for years. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26 at Ormond Funeral Home, Ormond Beach, Florida. She will then be laid to rest beside her husband in Danville.
Mrs. Kushner was born on November 22, 1917 in Atlanta, Ga. She was the daughter of Ben B. Fuchs and Florence F. Fuchs and she was raised in Atlanta. She graduated from Girls' High School, Atlanta in 1935 and corresponded with members of her class until the last days of her life.
She went to work as a dental assistant for Dr. Robert L. Kushner in 1936 for $8 per week and in 1938 she married Dr. Kushner. He entered the Army in 1940 and was posted to Hawaii. She was there on December 7, 1941 and was a Pearl Harbor survivor.
During WW II while her husband was in the Pacific and in Europe, she lived in Danville and she donated over three gallons of blood, despite never weighing over 100 pounds. She was of the Greatest Generation.
She lived in Danville, her husband's home town from 1945 until 1981. She raised their three sons and managed their dental office until he retired in 1977.
She was a member of Temple Beth Shalom, PTA, Danville Garden Club, and the Wednesday Club. She volunteered at Memorial Hospital in Danville.
After her husband died in 1979, she moved to Daytona Beach in 1981 to be close to her family. She volunteered at the Red Cross, and the Library, and she was an active member of Temple Beth El. She was a Master Bridge player and enjoyed television, difficult crossword puzzles, politics and theater. She was predeceased by her parents in the early 1940's, her husband, Bob, in 1979, her only brother, Lou Fuchs, in 1994. She is survived by her three sons, Robert L. of Atlanta, F. Harold of Daytona Beach,and Ben Fox of Apharetta, Ga. She had seven grandchildren, Robert, Jeff, George, Jennie and Henry of Atlanta, Toni K. Nee of Tallahassee, Fla, and Mike Kushner of Orlando, Fla. She had seven great grandchildren.
Jasper P. Lewis
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Jasper P. Lewis, Ph.D. died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002 at the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home.
He was the son of Joe Cephas Lewis and Ollie Phelps Lewis.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Laramore Lewis, and a sister, Josie Lewis.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Callie Lewis Hamilton and Elzie Lewis Beaton.

Mary Louise Litten
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Louise Litten, of 334 Maple Grove Ave., died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 8, 1919, in Keyser, W.Va., she was the daughter of Horace and Mary Emma Menefee.
She was a mother and homemaker. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Florence, Ala.
She is survived by five children, Margo Judy of Danville, Tinker Burkhardt of Hurt, Lee Roy Litten II of Greensboro, N.C., Michael Litten of Brandon, Fla. and Frances G. Clark of Harrisonburg.
She was predeceased by a daughter, LeeAnn Polantz and two brothers, William G. Menefee and Horace F. Menefee.
The funeral was Nov. 7 at Greenville Memorial Gardens in Florence, Ala. The Rev. Leonard McDowell officiated.
A celebration of her life will be held 4-6 p.m. Thursday at the residence of Charles and Margo Judy, 334 Maple Grove Ave.
Hampton Lee Martin Jr.
MAMARONCK, N.Y. - Hampton "Spud" Lee Martin Jr., 54, of 156 West Boston Post Road, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, in New York.
Born in Pittsylvania Co., October 19, 1948, he was a son of Hampton Martin Sr. and Ruth R. Martin.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in the Airborne Infantry. He was a retired culinary artist from United Hospital in Portchester and he also was a self-employed painter.
He joined the Piney Grove Baptist Church at an early age and after moving to New York he attended the First Baptist Church in Spring Valley.
He was preceded in death by one brother, William Sherman Martin, paternal grandparents, Charlie and Missy Martin, a maternal grandmother, Louise Ross Barksdale and a maternal grandfather, William Ross.
In addition to his parents, Mr and Mrs. Hampton Martin, Sr. of Gretna, Va., he is survived by one son, Hampton Lee Martin III, one daughter, Courtney Martin of Teaneck, N.J.; four brothers, Charles Martin of Chestnut Ridge, N.Y., Mark Martin of Las Vegas, Nev., Paul Martin and the Rev. Phillip Martin, both of Greensboro, N.C.; two sisters, Patricia Marze of Chestnut Ridge, N.Y. and Carolyn Pritchett of Blairs, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday from the Miller Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Phillip Martin and the Rev. Issac Monroe officiating. Interment will follow in the Piney Grove Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will be at the residence of his parents, 3321 West Gretna Road, Gretna, Va.

Olyer Wagoner Turner
DANVILLE, Va. - Olyer Wagoner Turner, 93, formerly of Rte. 1, Box 1422 in the Brosville Community, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002 at the Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born March 28, 1909, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of Jennie Wagoner Leffue.
Mrs. Turner was a member of Peoples Church of the Living God in Bassett. She lived most of her life in Franklin County and moved to the Brosville community in 1989. She and her husband owned and operated Turner Grocery Store in Bassett Heights.
She was predeceased by her husband, John M. Turner, who died in 1962.
She is survived by three daughters, Irene Hall Mitchell of Baltimore, Md., Martha Turner Hyler of Brosville, and Mary Turner of Carolina Beach, N.C., three sons, Edgar Mitchell Turner of Martinsville, Joseph D. Turner of Bachelor's Hall and David Turner, Oklahoma City, Ok., and one sister, Sara Hunt of North Carolina; 26 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jasper Wagoner and the Rev. Bud Nichols officiating. Interment will be in Shady Rest Cemetery, Bassett.

James Russell Barksdale Jr.
JAVA, Va. - James Russell Barksdale Jr., 73, of 15375 Halifax Road, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 16, 1929 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Russell Barksdale Sr. and Lucy Talbott Barksdale.
He is survived by a sister, Ruby B. Shelton of Halifax.
The graveside funeral will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery with the Rev. John S. Ruff officiating.
The family will receive friends 2-3 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Bernard Seymore Boaze
DANVILLE, Va. - Bernard Seymore Boaze, 89, of 17 Schoolfield Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at his residence. He had been in declining health for the past two years.
Born June 14, 1913, in the Bachelors Hall community of Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Roy Boaze and Bessie Gammon Boaze.
He lived most of his life in Danville and was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church. He was retired from Dan River Mills. He was the last surviving member of his generation.
He was married to Mary Stallings Boaze.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Hubert G. Boaze of Virginia Beach; two daughters, Linda Long and Shelby Burnett, both of Danville; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Ronald Neal Boaze, one brother, four sisters and one half-sister.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Schoolfield Baptist Church with the Rev. David R. Turbyfill and the Rev. Dr. John H. LaRue officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Thelma Chitwood Carswell
DANVILLE, Va. - Thelma Chitwood Carswell, 86, formerly of 248 Hamlin Ave., died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center after being in declining health for five years and in Roman Eagle Memorial Home since October 2001.
Born April 9, 1916, in Rocky Mount, she was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson Chitwood and Faye Belle Thurman Chitwood, who predeceased her.
She lived most of her life in Danville. She was retired from Corning Glass where she worked in the Quality Control Department. She was of the Methodist faith.
She is survived by one daughter, Judy C. Pruitt of Danville; two brothers, Thomas Dorie Chitwood of Rocky Mount and Giles Burke Chitwood of Vinton; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a son, Thomas Edward Carswell and a daughter, Sandra C. Walker.
The graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Highland Burial Park with the Rev. John C. Gentry officiating.
The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts, North Main Chapel. At other times they will be at the residence of Judy C. Pruitt, 2480 Golf Club Road, Danville, Va.

John Acey Grubbs
DANVILLE, Va. - John Acey Grubbs went to be with the Lord on Jan. 5, 2003 (just three days shy of his 91st birthday).
He was a native of Danville.
His surviving wife is Juanita Sizer Grubbs and late wife was Gladys South Grubbs, both of Danville.
He was a son of the late Charlie Monroe and Emma Tuck Grubbs.
He was a member of the Church of God Prophecy for over 70 years, a member of Eastern District Council of Carpenters Union #1402 for over 50 years and a retired millwright.
He was preceded in death by sons, Willard Anthony and Delano Edison Grubbs; sisters, Ethel East, Mary Fox and Annie Collins; brothers, Russell, David, William, Aaron and Claude Grubbs.
He is survived by a sister, Elsie Haskins of Martinsville; a stepdaughter, Frances Gwynn; daughters, Chesley Jacqueline Poteat of Danville, Elizabeth Nettles Fender of McCalla, Ala., Marsha Pinnick of Damascus, Va. and Sheila Sickinger of Church Road, Va.; sons, Rodger Grubbs and David Grubbs of Petersburg and Robert Grubbs of Sutherlin, as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at 812 Holland Road in Danville.
