Belva Compton Hall
DANVILLE, Va. - Belva Compton Hall, 94, formerly of 134 Westmoreland Court, Apt. 2C, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at Abington Place. She had been in declining health for three years and had been a resident of Abington Place for the past two years.
Born July 8, 1908, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Willie Compton and Sue Slayton Compton.
She lived her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. She was retired from Thalhimers Department Store where she worked as a salesperson. She was an active member of Kentuck Baptist Church and the Philathea Sunday School class until her health began to fail.
She married Harry L. Hall on Dec. 28, 1927. He predeceased her Oct. 13, 1977.
She is survived by two brothers, Lacy Compton and Johnnie Compton and two sisters, Alma C. Adams and Margaret C. Hogan, all of Danville.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Lynwood Compton and Homer Compton and two sisters, Beatrice C. Adams and Thelma C. Wiles.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Dr. A.C. Smith and Dr. Jim Gosney officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Margaret C. Hogan, 143 Locust Lane.

Frances Gill Hawkins
HOPEWELL, Va. - Francis Gill Hawkins of Hopewell, born July 24, 1940, died Jan. 3, 2003. She is survived by her husband of 19 years, George Thomas Hawkins Jr.; one brother, Donald Gill; her children, Donna Duncan and Gary Gauldin, G.T. Hawkins III, Linda Millham and Sandra Smith; grandchildren, Abigail Frances, Gabrielle, Alexis and Ashley, Jessica and Carrie, Ashley and Lauren, Kyle and Zachary; and her cousin, Janet McCormack.
Mrs. Hawkins was a registered nurse. She practiced at Richmond Memorial Hospital and most recently with Family Practice Specialists of Richmond, PC.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., where services will be held Wednesday 1 p.m. Interment 2:30 p.m. at Washington Memorial Park. Homie Massie Keesee
GRETNA, Va. - Homie Massie Keesee, 81, of 220 Squirrel Road, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden, N.C.
Born Aug. 26, 1921, in Bedford County, she was a daughter of Clarence Henry Massie and Annie Homie Layne Massie.
She was a member of Greenfield Baptist Church and a retired employee of Burlington Industries.
She was married to Gilmer G. Keesee, who predeceased her.
She is survived by two sons, Stephen Keesee of Washington, D.C. and Philip Keesee of Hurt; two daughters, Janet Vercellino of Eden, N.C. and Nancy Oakley of Ringgold; two brothers, Herman Massie and Robert Massie, both of Bedford; two sisters, Lucy Pinion and Nellie Arrington, both of Bedford; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by three brothers, Jake Massie, Walter Massie and Harry Massie.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Greenfield Baptist Church with the Rev. R.G. Rowland officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Herman William Lewis
DANVILLE, Va. - Herman William Lewis, 83, a resident of Piney Forest Health Care, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003. He had lived at the center for the past three years.
Born June 25, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Henry W. Lewis and Nettie Hughes Lewis.
He worked as a pressman for the U.S. government at the Bureau of Printing and Engraving for 23 years. He completed his pressman's apprenticeship at the V.P.I. extension in Danville. He worked in Washington, D.C. until his retirement in 1984, then moved to Lake Placid, Fla. In 1998, he returned to Danville.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Marine Corp in the Pacific.
He was married to Christine Virginia Hall Lewis, who predeceased him.
He is survived by four daughters, Patricia Lewis Stubbles, Sandra Lewis Williams, Judy Lewis Lumpkin and Sharon Lewis White, all of Danville; a son, Keith Daryl Lewis of Pelham, N.C.; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three brothers and one sister.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Lester Peters officiating. American Legion Post #1097 will conduct military honors.

Corbett William Lyons
DANVILLE, Va. - Corbett William Lyons, 87, of 167 Martindale Drive, died suddenly Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center after four days in the hospital.
Born July 26, 1915, in Fries, he was the son of Albert Lyons and Deliah Harrell Lyons.
He moved to the Danville area in 1978, where prior to his retirement, he was employed in the maintenance department with Lynch Brothers Real Estate and Rentals in Springfield. He was of the Baptist faith. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.
He married Mary Billings Lyons on July 21, 1933.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by a son, Edgar W. Lyons of Mount Clair; a daughter, Patricia L. Boyd of Mt. Airy, N.C.; a sister, Mamie Stone of Stuart; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Thurman Lyons, Herman Lyons and William Lyons and a sister, Hazel Adkins.
The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. William Blalock officiating. Interment will follow.

Clara Rowland Hood McMann
DANVILLE, Va. - Clara Rowland Hood McMann, 88, formerly of 46 Baltimore Ave., died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home. She had been a patient at the home for the past seven years.
Born Feb. 19, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Henry David Rowland and Mattie Lovelace Rowland.
She lived most of her life in Danville and was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church. She had worked at Dan River Mills for 43 years. She was the last surviving member of her generation.
She was married to Coy C. Hood. He predeceased her on April 30, 1945.
She is survived by a son, James Baxter Hood of Danville.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Rebecca Rowland.
The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Greenfield Baptist Church Cemetery, Gretna, with the Rev. David R. Turbyfill and the Rev. R.G. Rowland officiating.
The family will be at the residence of her son, 46 Baltimore Ave.

Helen Holt Rice
DANVILLE, Va. - Helen Holt Rice, 75, of 431 Gay St., died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 13, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Leonard Thomas and Catherine Holt Thomas.
She was employed with Lorillard prior to her retirement.
She was married to Charlie Rice.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by three daughters, Patricia Diane Keen of the residence, Nancy Rice and Linda Rice, both of Danville; a son, Bruce Rice of Danville; three sisters, Mary Ann Giles of Woodbridge, Nancy Adams and Brenda Thomas, both of Danville; two brothers, Leonard Thomas of Ontario, Canada and Wayne Thomas of Mechanicsville; a grandmother, Minnie Hairston of Danville and numerous grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Charlie Rice and eight brothers and sisters.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Missionary Church with the Rev. James Murrill officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens Cemetery.

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Louvenia Robertson, of Sunvail Apartments, Apt. 2D, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 31, 1925, in Person County, she was the daughter of Robert "Bob" Robertson and Hattie Mae McGhee Robertson.
She was a homemaker and a member of Beulah Baptist Church in Leasburg.
She is survived by two sons, Woodrow Wilson Robertson of Milton and Willie Percell Robertson of Leasburg; two daughters, Carrie Robertson of Greensboro and Betty Lou Robertson of Yanceyville; a brother, Robert Jake Robertson of Yanceyville; three sisters, Leola Pulliam of Burlington, Nancy Hightower of Milton and Gracie Robertson of Yanceyville; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Burton Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Wilson officiating. Interment will be in Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery.

Lillian Gray Stephens
PELHAM, N.C. - Lillian Gray Stephens, 77, of 7411 Allison Road, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 7, 1925, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of John W. Murphy and Elnora Hensley Murphy.
She was a homemaker and a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church.
She was married to Thomas Stephens.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Ola Enoch of Pelham, Dolly Claiborne and Peggy Long, both of Yanceyville; three sons, Thomas W. Stephens, John M. Stephens and Leroy Stephens, all of Providence; three sisters, Ida Belle Adams of Providence, Frances Murphy and Arlene Jackson, both of Pelham; a brother, Daniel Murphy of Ruffin and numerous grandchildren.

Felix Ward Stout
CASCADE, Va. - Felix Ward Stout, 66, of 333 Cascade Road, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, in Moorehead Memorial Hospital, Eden, N.C., after having been in declining health the past two years and in the hospital for two weeks.
Born Feb. 9, 1936, in Floyd County, he was the son of Noah Richard Stout and Alma Weddle Stout, who predeceased him.
He lived most of his life in the West Fork community of Pittsylvania County.
He was employed for 22 years in the maintenance department at Bassett Walker, Martinsville. He was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.
He was married to Virginia McDaniel Stout for 45 years.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by one daughter, Pamela Stout Snead of Cascade; three brothers, Willie P. Stout and Phillip E. Stout, both of Cascade, and Douglas Wayne Stout of Rocky Mount, N.C. and two grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Chapel, with the Rev. Jack Coe officiating. Interment will follow in the Cross McDaniel Cemetery in Axton.

Beulah Hudson Ball
EDEN, N.C. - Mrs. Beulah Hudson Ball celebrated 99 years on this Earth and for her 100th birthday her Lord called her home to celebrate with Him. Mrs. Ball, 100, a native of Yadkin County, died Saturday at her home.
Mrs. Ball's service will be held Tuesday, 2 p.m. at the Trinity Wesleyan Church; burial to follow at Overlook Cemetery. Visitation will be 7 p.m. til 9 p.m. Monday at Fair Funeral Home and at other times at the home at 709 Camelia Lane in Eden.
Mrs. Ball was a lifetime member of Trinity Wesleyan Church and was also a teacher there for over 29 years.
Mrs. Ball is survived by her daughters, Faye Ball Light and husband, Rudy of Eden, Sylvia Ball and Ann Marcum of the home; sons, Gary Ball and wife, Kathryn of Danville, Va., the Rev. Vernon Ball and wife, RcElla of Elkin; daughter-in-law, Patricia Ball of Elkin; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Ball was preceded in death by her husband, John V. Ball and son, Cecil D. Ball; two infant children and two brothers and two sisters.

DANVILLE, Va. - Dera Gibson Bond, 86, of 220 Fagan St., died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for several years.
Born Jan. 22, 1916, in Callands, she was the daughter of Rossey Addison Gibson and Lily Adkins Gibson.
She had lived most of her life in Danville, where she was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Lukes United Methodist Church
She married Loyd M. Bond, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by a daughter, Donna Pierce of Chesapeake; a brother, Henry Clay Gibson of Culpepper; a sister, Laura Perdue of Danville; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randy Duncan officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
