Marvin Buckner
DANVILLE, Va. - SSG Marvin Deloy Buckner, U.S. Army Ret., 77, of 812 Westview Drive, died Friday, October 4, 2002 at the Riverside Health Care Center. He had been in declining health for several years.
Mr. Buckner was born September 20, 1925 in Morningburg, LA a son of Sterling Price Buckner and Jimmie Eula Sample Buckner. He had lived in Danville for the past 30 years.
Mr. Buckner proudly served in the United States Army, for God and Country, for 25 years, retiring as a Staff Sergeant. During World War II, he was posted to the European Theatre, the Philippines and Okinawa and served in Korea during the Korean War. He received several medals including the Good Conduct Medal with six loops.
After his retirement from the Army, Mr. Buckner worked for AT&T in Greensboro and for Burn's Security at the Lorillard Tobacco Company-Danville Plant. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Petersburg and the Danville Sertoma Club.
He was first married to Virginia Brown Buckner and after her death was married to Mildred Ricketts Buckner, who survives.
Survivors in addition to his wife of the home, include one son, Marvin D. Buckner Jr. and his wife, Carol of Darien, GA; a stepdaughter, Cathy P. Lavinder and her husband, Randy of Danville; a stepson, Ronald Boyter and his wife, Suzie of Satellite Beach, FL; two brothers, Charles Buckner of Tulare, CA and Thomas Buckner of Paris, TX; two sisters, Nell Portero of Shreveport, LA and Ann L. Stubblefield of Fresno, CA; a special friend, Curtis Brown of Miami, FL; ten grandchildren, Robert, Christopher and Dustin Boyter, all of Orlando, FL; Lisa B. Duncan of Atlanta, GA; Stephen, Ryan and Mark Lavinder, all of Danville; Brad Lavinder of Cary, NC; Vanessa Dodson of Carthage, TX and Glenn Buckner of Darien, TX and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Melvin Earl Buckner, who was MIA 1945 in Germany; and a sister, Sonia Sterl Elsner.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, October 7, 2002 at 3:00 P.M. from the graveside at Floral Hills Memory Gardens by the Rev. Dr. Leroy Clack with military honors by American Legion Post #1097 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends Sunday, October 6, 2002 from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and other times at the residence.

Hubert Lee Galpin Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Hubert Lee Galpin Sr., 88, of 10156 Martinsville Highway, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at his residence.
Born Sept. 25, 1914, in Salt Lake City, Utah, he was the son of Arthur John Galpin and Olive Priestley Galpin.
Mr. Galpin lived most of his life in Utah and attended the University of Utah. He was employed as a mechanic for Greyhound Bus Company for 34 years, retiring at age 62. He was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Mr. Galpin loved his family. He also enjoyed the game of golf, where he had seven holes in one. He played football in high school. He was the Utah horse shoe pitching champion on 1953 and was an avid fisherman.
He had been in declining health for the past two months and living with his two daughters for 1 1/2 years.
He was married to Henrietta Reese Galpin, who predeceased him.
He is survived by two daughters, Diane Galpin Harris and her husband, Harold L. Harris, of Brosville and Marsha Galpin Moore and her husband, Charlie Wayne Moore, of Axton; a son, Hubert Lee Galpin Jr. and his wife, LuAnne Galpin, of Salt Lake City, Utah; three sisters, Katherine Carman, Hazel Jeffs and Emily Johnson, all of Salt Lake City, Utah; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Joys Webster and a brother, John Galpin.
The funeral service will be held at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, Salt Lake City, Utah. Burial will be in Wasatch Lawn Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends Sunday, Oct. 6 at 7 until 8 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times the family will be at the daughter's residence, 10156 Martinsville Highway.

Margie Ramsey Johnson
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Margie Ramsey Johnson, 76, of 3332 Hwy. 86 North, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at Brian Nursing Center following a period of declining health.
Born Jan. 12, 1926, in Chattanooga, Tenn., she was the daughter of Nathan and Pauline Metcalf Ramsey.
She worked in textiles for 30 years, and was formerly employed at Flexlon Fabrics in Graham. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Sandra J. Blanton of Raleigh; four sons, Joe Johnson Jr. of Collinsville, Va., Paul Johnson of Greensboro, Steve Johnson of Pelham and Tim Johnson of Yanceyville; two sisters, Pat Smith of St. Louis, Mo. and Kathleen Creason of Orlando, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph W. Johnson Sr. on May 27, 1983. He had served for many years as pastor of Grace Baptist Church.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Harrelson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Underwood officiating. Interment will be held at Grace Baptist Church in Anderson.

Roy H. Thompson
DANVILLE, Va. - Roy H. Thompson, 81, formerly of Rosemary Lane, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home. He had been in declining health for six months.
Born June 5, 1921, in Damascas, he was the son of Glenn Thompson and Vina Parton Thompson Irvine.
He lived most of his life in Danville and was a resident of Abington Place before moving to Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
He was retired from the City of Danville, where he worked as a surveyor for the Department of Gas & Water. He was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church, where he was a member of the church choir, served as Treasurer, worked with the youth and helped prepare the chrismon tree. He was an avid runner, loved working with woodcrafts and loved animals, especially birds.
He was a veteran, having serving in the U.S. Army in World War II as a Paratrooper.
He was married to Elizabeth Maddox Thompson, who predeceased him in 1999.
He is survived by two brothers, Paul Thompson of Orange and Glenn Thompson of Richmond; a half sister, Patricia Irvine Powell of Danville; and a half brother, John Irvine Jr. of Houston, Texas.
The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jonathan Hamman officiating and military honors by American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence of Patricia I. Powell, 1470 Blair Loop Road.

Leonard Turner
DANVILLE, Va. - Leonard Turner, 95, formerly of 723 Hughes Street, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center where he has resided for 15 months. He had been in declining health for several years.
Born May 11, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James M. Turner and Fannie Phelps Turner.
He had lived his entire life in the Danville area and was retired from Dan River Mills where he had worked as a machinist in the No. 3 card room. He was a member of Arlington Baptist Church.
He was married to Ilar Harrison Turner, who predeceased him in 1982.
He is survived by a daughter, Lilian Gravely; two sisters, Dolly Shumate and Nellie Mayes, all of Danville; and 12 grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by two sons, James Turner and Jack Turner; a daughter, Gladys Hile; three sisters, Nannie Kennedy, Rosa Ingram and Mary "Mamie" Turner; and five brothers, Charlie Turner, Aubrey Turner, William "Bill" Turner, Moses Turner and Robert "Bob" Turner.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Arlington Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Greeson officiating. Interment will be in Schoolfield Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence of his sister, Dolly Shumate, 180 Riverbend Road, off Old Mayfield Road.

Artie Mae Taylor Warren
DURHAM, N.C. - Artie Mae Taylor Warren, highly loved and most precious daughter, mother and wife, left this life to share eternity with Jesus on Thursday, October 3, 2002. She joins her wonderful family and many friends who went before her.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 7, 2002 at 2 pm at Howerton-Bryan Funeral Home in Durham, NC, with visitation being held on Sunday evening from 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will be held 2 pm Tuesday, October 8 at St. Mark PH Church in Danville, Rev. Roger Collins officiating. A graveside service will immediately follow, with Townes Funeral Home assisting the family.
Preceding her departure were her grandparents Rev. Dewey Yeatts, Dr. Div., Artie Watlington Yeatts, David Taylor and Lena Guill Taylor, brother George Dewey "Little Henry" Taylor and cousin Stanley Lewis.
Those who are left to survive her passing are husband Gerald David Warren Sr., with whom she had just celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary, cherished son Gerald "Gerry" David Warren Jr. and his wife Tara Dawn Warren, father and mother Rev. Henry Wilson Taylor and Faye Yeatts Taylor, brother and sister-in-law Michael Wilson Taylor and Becky Taylor and nephews that were considered as sons, Michael Brandon Taylor and Preston Daniel Taylor.
Artie had an infectious energy and smile, and constantly shared and displayed her love of Jesus with all that she came in contact with. She was an accomplished pianist and vocalist, and diligently worked in numerous capacities to better the lives of children and adults alike that needed assistance. Regardless of a person's background or belief, Artie's wish was that all who came in contact with her would feel her love and genuine compassion and be inspired to achieve greater heights. Her true sense of adventure and love of life will be sorely missed.
A native of Danville, Virginia, Artie lived and worked in Durham, NC for most of her adult life, and was presently employed in the Finance and Administration office for the Graduate school at Duke University. Artie was a graduate of Dan River High School and the Danville Community College branch of Virginia Tech. She was a member of the Cary Church of God where she volunteered and served in various positions in church and in other community organizations.

Annie Ruth Zimmerman
DANVILLE, Va. - Annie Ruth Zimmerman, 80, of 750 Vicar Road, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at Piney Forest Health Care Center after several months of declining health.
Born June 6, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of George Payne and Mazie Boaze Payne.
Most of her life was spent in Danville and prior to her retirement, she was employed by Dan River Mills. She was a graduate of Callands High School and was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church.
She was married to Ned A. Zimmerman, who predeceased her.
She is survived by a son, Michael (Mike) Osborne of Danville; a daughter, Dianne Franklin of Richmond; two stepdaughters, Nedda Yothers and Linda Oesterle, both of Florida; a sister, Ella Mae Haas of Chatham; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and seven step grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Ross Range officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and will at other times at the residence of her nephew, Lynn Powell, 130 Greenwood Lane.

Althea Wilson Bragg
HAMPTON, Va. - Althea Wilson Bragg, 88, of 36A DoLittle Road, died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at Sentra Hospital after two weeks of declining health and two weeks in the hospital.
Born Sept. 21, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Charlie Wilson and Sally Ingram Wilson.
She was married to Fletcher T. Bragg, who predeceased her. She lived on Holland Road in Danville for a number of years and was a former member of Holland Road Baptist Church. While living in Danville, she was employed at Dan River Mills. She had lived in Hampton for the past nine months.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Snead of Hampton; a sister, Daisy Collins Cumbo of Danville; a brother, Claude Wilson of Bristol, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Schoolfield Cemetery. The Rev. Roger Ewing officiated.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Daisy Cumbo, 767 Holland Road, Danville.

Perry O. Howerton
DANVILLE, Va. - Perry O. Howerton, 69, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 20, 1933, in Halifax County, he was the son of Samuel and Edna Lee Howerton.
He was married to Mary Louise Logan Howerton, who survives.
He was a member of North New Hope Baptist Church, where he served as the chairman of the Deacon Board, pass chairman of the Trustee Board and a member of the Male Chorus.
He was also a member of Danville and Vicinity Deacons Union, Cherrystone Missionary Baptist Association Division of Laymen, Nehemiah Lodge no. 26, Danville British Car Club and Friday Morning Breakfast Club.
He was retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, and had been employed at ARA Food Service and Womack Radio. He was owner of Perry O. Catering Service and Perry O. Landscaping and Garden Service.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two sons, Perry LaConda Howerton of Palos Verdes, Calif. and Rodney Nigel Howerton of Los Angeles, Calif.; two daughters, Jennifer A. Howerton-Wharton of Fort Washington, Md. and Mia Dawn Howerton of Forestville, Md.; two brothers, Frank A. Howerton of Danville and John D. Howerton of Bay Shore, N.Y.; two sisters, Myrtle A. Fitzgerald of Danville and Johnsie V. Reid of Long Island, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at North New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Willard B. Smith officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
Viewing will be 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Howerton Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence.

Bartlett Kyle Jones Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Bartlett Kyle Jones, Jr., age 79, of 208 Shamrock Drive, died Monday, September 16, 2002 at his home.
Born September 4, 1923, in Danville, Virginia, he was the son of Thelma Speer Jones and Bartlett Kyle Jones.
Mr. Jones is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty McLachlan Jones, one son, Bartlett Kyle Jones, III and his wife, Deborah Jones of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, one daughter, Michelle Jones Spencer and her husband, Sidney Walker Spencer of Mount Airy, North Carolina, and two grandchildren, Kathryn M. Spencer and Sidney W. Spencer, Jr.
Mr. Jones was a life long member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany where he was a former member of the Vestry and Sponsor of Episcopal Young Churchmen. A graduate of Woodberry Forest and Choate School, he was a buyer for Leggett-Myers until disabled in a car wreck in 1965.
Mr. Jones served six years in the U.S. Marine Corps, including two years and four months in the Pacific during World War II. He received the Asiatic-Pacific ribbon with nine battle stars, the Philippine Liberation ribbon with two battle stars, the Atlantic theater ribbon, the presidential unit citation, the naval unit citation, the Japan occupation ribbon, the good conduct ribbon and the victory ribbon.
In 1984, he was awarded the Cross of Military Service from the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The cross is awarded to individuals with distinguished military records. Mr. Jones was a charter member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
Always active in the Republican Party, Mr. Jones was also a member of the Danville Historical Society, V.F.W. Post 647, the Danville Golf Club, and a Little League coach for several years.
Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. James W. Mathieson, Rector, and the Rev. Thom Lewis, at the Church of the Epiphany, Thursday, September 19, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park. Military Graveside Honors will be given by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post No. 1097.
The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 18, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence, 208 Shamrock Drive.

Carl E. Taylor Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Mr. Carl E. Taylor, Jr. of 149 Locust Lane died Tuesday, September 17, 2002 at The Stratford Health Care Center after a decline in health.
Mr. Taylor was born the 24th day of June, 1924 at State Road, North Carolina in Wilkes County, a son of the late Carl Evert Taylor, Sr. and Emma Stanley Taylor.
Carl lived on a farm at the foot of the Blue Ridge Wilkes County, North Carolina with his family until he was nine years old, moving to Danville in 1993 where he attended the public school at Schoolfield, Va. He worked for Dan River Mills as a weaver for two years before going into the U.S. Air Force in April of 1943 during World War II. After being discharged in October of 1945, Mr. Taylor returned to Dan River Mills where he worked for the next two years as a loomfixer and later as an overseer. In 1958 he became Superintendent of Weaving in the sheeting division and for the next fifteen years served in that capacity, retiring in April of 1973.
After retirement from Dan River Mills in 1973, Mr. Taylor was employed by J.C. Penney Company in Danville as a sales associate in the automotive department and later in electronics until he retired in 1989.
A charter member of The North Main Baptist Church, he has served on The Board of Trustees for the past thirty years. Mr. Taylor has served on The Zoning Board, Planning Commission and The Welfare Board of the City of Danville. A member of The Veterans of Foreign Wars and The American Legion Post no. 325. Mr. Taylor had authored two books concerning family genealogy.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Margie Mae Creasy.
Mr. Taylor married Christine Lois Williams of Danville on the 22nd of August, 1943, who survives of the home.
In addition to his wife of 59 years, he is survived by one son, Carl Reid Taylor and his wife, Ann, of Danville; one grandson, Carl Reid "C.R." Taylor, Jr. and his wife, Amy, of Medford, Ore.; and one granddaughter, Beth Ann Taylor of Lynchburg.
