John B. Williamson
MILTON, N.C. - John B. Williamson, 76, of 136 Broad Street, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2002 at his residence. He had been in declining health for the past two years.
Born Jan. 8, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Green Allen Williamson and Lucy Anne Booth Williamson, both deceased.
He was a member of Milton Baptist Church and lived most of his life in Milton. He retired as a truck driver for J.P. Stevens in 1977.
In addition to his wife, Alice "Jean" Luttrell Williamson, he is survived by two sons, John B. Williamson, Jr. of Spartanburg, S.C. and Danny L. Williamson, Sr. of Danville, Va.; two daughters, Cynthia W. Diehm of Spartanburg, S.C. and Wanda W. Scruggs of Providence; two brothers, Jimmy Williamson of Morristown, Tenn. and Freddie Williamson of Halifax, Va.; eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Priscilla Barber; a brother, Conroe Williamson; and a grandson.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clyde Everett and Rev. W.F. McMahan officiating. Graveside military honors will be conducted by American Legion Dan River Post 1097 Honor Guard. Interment will be at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family received friends Tuesday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home and will at other times at the residence.

Robert Douglas Yeatts
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Douglas Yeatts, 82, of 1468 Mill Creek Road, died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for four months.
Born Nov. 4, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Joseph Morris Yeatts and Ollie Firesheet Yeatts, both deceased. He married Myrtle Moon Yeatts on Feb. 8, 1940.
He lived his entire life in Pittsylvania County and was retired from Dan River Mills, Inc. after 45 years of service as a Dye House Operator.
He was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church; and as an avid outdoorsman, he loved to hunt and fish.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in Europe during WWII.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two daughters, Alice Y. Oakes of Dry Fork and Connie Allen of Blairs; a son, David Ray Yeatts of Danville; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Linwood Yeatts of Danville.
He was predeceased by a son, Robert Dale Yeatts; and a sister, Cossie Buntin.
The graveside funeral was held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Darrell Campbell officiating. Military honors were provided by the American Legion Post 325.
The family received friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and will at other times at the residence.

Charlie Jessie Ferrell
DANVILLE, Va. - Charlie Jessie Ferrell, 86, of 1109 Maison Drive, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, at his residence.
Born April 16, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Henry Ferrell and Anna Skipper Ferrell.
He was self-employed as a farmer and was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church.
He was married to Susie D. Ferrell, who predeceased him.
He is survived by five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held noon Thursday at Laurel Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. James Cabell officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence.

James Thomas 'Jimmy' Graham Jr.
HALIFAX, Va. - James Thomas "Jimmy" Graham Jr., 68, of 46 Snead Lane, died Nov. 4, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Nov. 26, 1933, in Lee County, he was the son of James Thomas Graham Sr. and Annie Carter Graham.
He was a member of Beth Car Baptist Church and the Sportsman's Club.
He was married to Joyce Fletcher Graham.
In addition to his wife of Halifax, he is survived by a number of cousins.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Lewis Wall, Dr. Melvin Bradshaw and Liz Spencer officiating. Interment will be in Virgilina Cemetery.

Virginia Mabe Hutcherson
SAVANNAH, Ga. - Virginia Mabe Hutcherson, 86, died Nov. 4, 2002, at Riverview Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born in Fries, Va., and moved to Savannah in 1985 after living in Danville, Va. She was a member of Brush Arbor Baptist Church in Danville, Va.
She was married to Samuel E. Hutcherson, who predeceased her Dec. 22, 1980.
She is survived by four sons, Robert Hutcherson of Savannah, Ronald Hutcherson of Atlanta, Samuel Hutcherson and Jack Hutcherson, both of College Park, Md; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Stephen R. Lamb officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Franklin 'Mack' Pleasant
DANVILLE, Va. - Franklin "Mack" Pleasant, 58, of 507 Elizabeth St. Ext., died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at his residence, following a lengthy illness.
Born April 4, 1944, in Leasburg, N.C., he was the son of Doug Pleasant and Carrie Solomon Pleasant.
Prior to his illness, he was employed by Adams Electric in Reidsville, N.C.
He is survived by a daughter, Sherry Lewter of Georgia; two sons, Stevie Pleasant of Stoneville, N.C. and Mackie Pleasant of Fort Bragg, N.C.; a sister, Eunice Wall of Greensboro, N.C.; two brothers, Fletcher Pleasant of Altavista and Larry Pleasant of Yanceyville, N.C.; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Community Baptist Church, Yanceyville, N.C., with Wayne Jones officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Margaret 'Peggy' Farmer Tate
LORTON, Va. - Margaret "Peggy" Farmer Tate, 90, of Sunrise Assisted Living, died Monday, November 4, 2002, at her residence.
Born November 18, 1911, in the Renan Community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Abner J. Farmer and Lucy Ferguson Farmer, both deceased.
Mrs. Tate lived most of her life in Danville where she was employed for 25 years with the Danville Register & Bee. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
She was married to John Will Tate, who predeceased her April 11, 1992.
She is survived by four nieces, Eloise Carter and her husband, Ralph Carter of Lorton, Inez Elliott and her husband, Eddie Elliott of Altavista, Betty Siviter of Swannanoa, N.C. and Jean Tate of Haw River, N.C.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by four sisters and a brother.
The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 6, 2002, at Highland Burial Park with The Rev. Allen Blanks officiating.

W. Claude Adkins
DANVILLE, Va. - W. Claude Adkins, 86, formerly of Blairs, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born March 11, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Johnny Will Adkins and Nannie Bett Hall Adkins.
He was of the Baptist faith. He lived his life in Blairs before moving to Danville. He was a retired farmer and a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was married to Lois Willis Adkins who predeceased him on March 9, 1981.
He is survived by one sister, Melissa Adkins Starr, of Danville.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Johnny Adkins officiating.

Aubrey Vann Ferguson
RUSTBURG, Va. - Aubrey Vann Ferguson, 78, of 563 Knollwoods Drive, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at his residence after three years of declining health.
Born Jan. 8, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Abner Ferguson and Janie Mae Lewis.
He attended Christian Heritage Church. He lived his life in Danville before moving to Rustburg. He was retired from Dan River Mills, Inc., where he worked in the Schoolfield Division in the warp room.
He married Kathleen Smith Ferguson on May 15, 1942. She predeceased him Dec. 31, 2001.
He is survived by two daughters, Audrey Jean Ferguson Bernard of Greensboro, N.C. and Kathy Marie Ferguson Weaver of Danville; a son, Keith Vann Ferguson of Rustburg; two brothers, Abner Conrad Ferguson and Eston Thomas Ferguson, both of Danville; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a sister, Emma Elizabeth Ferguson Horsley.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with Pastor Stephen White officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

George Hagiwara
DANVILLE, Va. - George Hagiwara, 87, of 118 Wendin Lane, died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 1, 1915, in Honolulu, Hawaii, he was the son of Kenzuchi Hagiwara and Yone Tamura Hagiwara.
Mr. Hagiwara had lived in Hawaii prior to moving to Danville in 1994. He was a graduate of Logan State University and was a civil service worker. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Danville.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart.
He was married to Hazel Yoshino Hagiwara, who predeceased him Feb. 15, 1997.
He is survived by a daughter, Brenna H. Takata and son-in-law, Calvin T. Takata, both of Danville; two brothers, Takeshi Hagiwara of Honokaa, Hawaii and Hiram Hagiwara of Hilo, Hawaii; three sisters, Asayo Kusumoto of Japan, Amy H. Kidani of Kailua, Hawaii and Anna H. Chung of Honolulu, Hawaii; and two granddaughters, Diane C. Takata of Los Angeles, Calif. and Maile T. Takata of Greensboro, N.C.
The memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Charles LaPlata officiating.
Interment will be held 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Mary Farmer Joyce
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Farmer Joyce, 77, of 1528 Orphanage Road, died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at her residence after 10 years of declining health.
Born Jan. 22, 1925, in Mayodan, N.C., she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Roy Farmer.
She had lived in the Danville area for the past year and had previously lived in the Chatham area.
She was married to Charles C. Joyce, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by a son, Jerry Joyce of Winterbow, N.C.; a daughter, Jenny Traynham of Powhatan; two sisters, Frances Mason and Alma Austin, both of Roanoke; and seven grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Brenda Lee Joyce Allen.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Melvin Meade Martin
DANVILLE, Va. - Melvin Meade Martin, 73, formerly of 819-B Holland Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002.
Born Oct. 22, 1929, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Charles Emory Martin and Gertrude Burnett Martin.
He lived most of his life in the Danville area. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from the food vending business. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was a member of Masonic Lodge Roman Eagle #122, a life member of the Danville Scottish Rite Bodies, DAV Archer T. Gammon Chapter and Omar Shrine Temple.
In addition to his second wife, Chris Matsassos New Martin, he is survived by two daughters, Julia Martin of Danville and Betty Duncan of Roxboro, N.C.; one brother, Paul Martin of Danville; one sister, Betty Jenkins of Tidewater; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife, Elizabeth Ferris Martin, he was predeceased by one brother, Harold Martin.
The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. James Mayes officiating and Masonic Rites by the Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge 122.
