Catharine Langhorne Taylor Carter
DANVILLE, Va. - Catharine Langhorne Taylor Carter, of 121 Mount Vernon Ave., died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born July 4, 1912, in Stuart, she was a daughter of John Samuel Taylor and Betty Ruth Davis Taylor.
She attended Columbia University and graduated from James Madison University. She was a retired teacher having taught at Children County Home in New Jersey, schools in Stuart, Honduras in Central America and in Danville. She was a member of the Wednesday Club, D.A.R. and the Volunteer Knitting Club of Danville Regional Medical Center. She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.
She was married to Thomas Norman Carter, who predeceased her in April 1972.
She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth C. "Betty" Pomeranz and Catharine C. Meador, both of Danville and a son, Philip L. Carter of Raleigh, N.C.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by three brothers, John D. Taylor, William L. Taylor and James S. Taylor and a sister, Frances T. Boyer.
The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Mountain View Cemetery with the Rev. Jonathan Bennett officiating.

George Herman 'Jiggs' Cousins Sr.
CALLANDS, Va. - George Herman "Jiggs" Cousins Sr., 81, of 18460 Franklin Turnpike, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 25, 1921, in Callands, he was a son of Paul Henry Cousins and Lilia Woodall Cousins.
He retired as a profile operator for American Furniture Company. He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church of Callands.
He was a PFC in the U.S. Army during World War II serving in the South Pacific, from Nov. 19, 1942 to May 10, 1945. He was a member of the Archer Gammon Post, DAV Post 19.
He married Mildred Horsley Cousins on Feb. 5, 1947.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, George Cousins Jr. of the Mt. Hermon community; a daughter, Joan C. Wood of Danville; two brothers, Frank Cousins and Paul Cousins, both of Dry Fork; a sister, Mary Ann Rigney of Callands; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Judy C. Dalton; a brother, Harry Cousins and three sisters, Hallie Merricks, Annie Finney and Frances Marlowe.
The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Dan River Post 1097 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home and at other times the family will be at the residence.

Dr. Philip Hubert Fensterer Jr.
HALIFAX, Va. - Dr. Philip Hubert Fensterer Jr., 79, of 680 Canterbury Drive, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at his home.
Born Nov. 22, 1923, in Oyster Bay, N.Y., he was the son of Philip Hubert Fensterer Sr. and Laureitta Brice Fensterer.
He was a member of the St. John's Episcopal Church and the AMA.
He practiced family medicine in Glen Cove, N.Y. and Glen Head, N.Y. and emergency medicine in South Boston, Va.
He was first married to Beatrice U. Fensterer, who predeceased him.
He later married Christine Chaney Fensterer.
In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by five daughters, Anna Marie Fensterer Seale of Frederick, Md., Carol F. Pattarini and Dr. Dorothy Fensterer-Newton, both of Halifax, Sara F. Price of East Point, Ga. and Susan F. Gates of Ponca City, Okla.; one son, Philip Hubert Fensterer III of Portland, Ore.; three stepsons, Dr. Carrington Smith of Allentown, Pa., Jeffrey Smith of Halifax and Gerald Smith of South Boston; one sister, Dorothy Edelstein of Virginia Beach; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife, he was also predeceased by one daughter, Diane F. Armstrong.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Booher officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Lois Hedrick Ferguson
DANVILLE, Va. - Lois Hedrick Ferguson, 78, formerly of 216 Girard St., Apt. B, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Aug. 26, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Jessie Hedrick and Mae Waldon Hedrick.
She lived most of her life in Danville. She retired from Stanley Furniture Company where she repaired furniture. She was of the Holiness faith.
She is survived by a sister, Virginia Harper of Staunton and two grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Carolyn Ferguson Rea; two brothers and one sister.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home with the Rev. William D. Harper officiating. Interment will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

Herman F. Haymore Sr.
DRY FORK, Va. - Herman F. Haymore Sr., 88, of 188 F.C. Beverly Road, died Feb. 6, 2003 in Stratford Health Care Center after being in declining health for the past six months and in Stratford for over five months.
Born June 17, 1914, in the Dry Fork community, he was the son of Lloyd B. Haymore and Minnie Kirts Haymore, who predeceased him.
He lived all of his life in the Whitmell Community of Pittsylvania County. He had retired from Dan River Inc. in 1965 where he worked on a J-3 Tender machine. Mr. Haymore was a member of Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church where he was a former board member, having served for 38 years and a former Sunday school teacher, having taught for over 35 years.
He married Lillian Hearp Haymore on Aug. 28, 1935. She predeceased him on May 21, 1997.
He is survived by four sons, H.F. Haymore Jr. of Danville, Jerry Haymore of Greenville, N.C., Ronnie Haymore of Dry Fork and Johnny Haymore, of Danville; three sisters, Flossie H. Riley of Altavista, Irene H. Kirby of Columbia, S.C. and Elizabeth H. Mumford of Danville; six grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by four brothers, Lemmie, Posey, Ernest and Sam Haymore and one sister, Mable H. Stowe.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at the Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Kenneth Terry and the Rev. Cecil Coates officiating. Interment will be in the Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery.
The family will be at the residence of his son, H.F. Haymore Jr., 2361 Afton Road, Danville.

Mary S. Hollingsworth
FAYETTVILLE, N.C. - Mrs. Mary Frances Shumate Hollingsworth, 87, of Village Green Nursing Center, Fayetteville, N.C., formerly of Danville, Va., died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Fayetteville, N.C.
Mrs. Hollingsworth was born Sept. 13, 1915, in the Cascade community, the daughter of William Harden Shumate and Minnie Cox Shumate. She was married to Arthur McNeill Hollingsworth Jr. on Feb. 8, 1945. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur McNeill Hollingsworth Jr. who died on Feb. 22, 1974; three brothers, William, Harden, and Edwin Shumate; and two sisters, Joyce Shumate Cook and Margaret Shumate Collis.
Mrs. Hollingsworth was a member of Hay St. United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, Order of the Eastern Star and the Altrussa Club.
She worked in the Terry Sanford High School cafeteria for 15 years.
Mrs. Hollingsworth is survived by two daughters, Deborah H. Cashwell of Fayetteville and Carole H. Bowdre of Bennettsville, S.C.; a sister, Ernestine S. Lloyd of Danville, Va.; and four grandchildren.

DRY FORK, Va. - Jerry Ronald Mills, 47, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Born Jan. 5, 1956, in Thomasville, N.C., he was a son of Clarence K. Mills and Martha Stowe Mills, who both survive.
In addition to his parents of Dry Fork, he is survived by three daughters, Stacy M. Ford of Thomasville, N.C., Sarah Mills and Cindy Mills, both of Dry Fork; three sisters, Bridgette M. Hunt of Welcome, N.C., Doris M. Collins of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Cathy Mills of Thomasville, N.C.; two brothers, Jimmy Mills of Thomasville, N.C. and Charles Mills of Keeling and three grandchildren.
There will be no funeral service.

She was born July 9, 1915, in Pittsylvania County.
She was married to Prince E. Scott Sr., who predeceased her.
She is survived by two daughters, Elsie Falden and Edith Cabell, both of Danville and two sons, Leroy Scott of Danville and Prince E. Scott Jr. of Boston, Mass.

Ora Mae Daniels Setliff
DANVILLE, Va. - Ora Mae Daniels Setliff, 79, of 116 Rugby Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at her residence.
Born Sept. 1, 1923, in Rockingham County, N.C., she was a daughter of Harry M. Daniels and Tera Bartee Daniels.
Mrs. Setliff had lived her entire life in the Danville area. She was a member of the Ferry Roads Friends Church and served as secretary/treasurer of the Virginia Willis Missionary Society for 40 years.
On Feb. 26, 1949, she was married to Calvin G. Setliff, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the home, she is survived by a son, Gregory Daniel Setliff and daughter-in-law, Paula Yeatts Setliff; a granddaughter, Allison Michelle Setliff; a brother, Rayford Daniels and two sisters, Jean Setliff and Dorothy Setliff, both of Danville.
She was predeceased by a grandson, Parker Daniel Setliff; two brothers, Doug Daniels and Herbert Langston Daniels and four sisters, Edith Carter, Margaret Turpin, Rebecca Willis and Mamie Mansfield.
The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Reverend Linwood R. Hairfield Sr. officiating.

CHATHAM, Va. - Lucille Banks Solomon, 97, of Highway 29 North, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 29, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late James M. and Lizzie McNorton Banks.
She was a retired nurse and a member of New Hope A.M.E. Church.
She was married to William Solomon, who predeceased her.
She is survived by three daughters, Diana Sanders of Lynchburg, Phyllis Jordan of Chatham and Rebecca Solomon of Atlantic, Ga.; one son, George Solomon of California; two sisters, Lenna Donnell of Chatham and Helena Banks of New York; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday from the chapel of Howerton Funeral Home with the Rev. Garry N. Page and the Rev. H. Shackleford officiating. Interment will be in the Chatham Cemetery.
Viewing will be 3-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

HALIFAX, Va. - Anna Virginia Thaxton, 81, of 1021 Stevens Lane, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, in Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born May 11, 1921, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Jenny Thomas Pulliam and Bob Pulliam.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of Aarons Creek Baptist Church.
She was married to John Al Thaxton, who predeceased her.
She is survived by two sons, Robert Wade of Halifax and Tommy Thaxton of South Boston; one brother, Jordan Pulliam of Virgilina; and four grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Aarons Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Bill McEntire officiating.
