Jacquelyn C. Koplen
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Jacquelyn C. Koplen, 69, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center after a long illness.
Born May 26, 1933, in Havermill, Mass., she was the daughter of Samuel Cassoy and Sarah Reisner Cassoy Rubin.
She attended Stratford College in Danville, Va. After college, she became a specialist in early childhood development for high risk infants. She also implemented treatment programs in Danville and Halifax County, Va.
She was an active member of Temple Beth Sholom congregation in Danville, Va. from 1964-1999, when she and her husband moved to Myrtle Beach. She held positions for leadership at the Temple and the local Hadassah.
She was married to Dr. Julian A. Koplen.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Michael A. Koplen of Rockland County, N.Y. and Andrew B. Koplen of Myrtle Beach; two daughters, Perri K. Sullivan of Myrtle Beach and Deborah J. Koplen of McLean, Va.; a sister, Evyn Rubin of Tucson, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Temple Beth Sholom in Danville, Va., with Rabbi Israel Gerber officiating. Interment will follow in Aetz Chayim Cemetery.

Rosa Samarion Luck
BLAIRS, Va. - Rosa Samarion Luck, 80, of 2580 Lawless Creek Road, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2003, at her residence.
Born Sept. 12, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Ernest Wilson and Odessa Mayo Wilson.
She was married to Charles S. Luck, who predeceased her.
She is survived by two daughters, Julia R. Luck of Bronx, N.Y. and Denise Colton of Mitchellville, Md.; two sons, Charles Keith Luck of Danville and Carl R. Luck of Greensboro, N.C. and a sister, Bertha Mays of Chester, Pa.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Bibleway Worldwide Church Cathedral with Apostle Lawrence G. Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Christopher Dale Nelson Jr.
AXTON, Va. - Christopher Dale Nelson Jr., infant son of Teresa Dillon Nelson and Christopher Dale Nelson Sr., died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Moorehead Memorial Hospital in Eden, N.C.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandmother, Joan Preston Dillon of Martinsville and his paternal grandparents, Priscilla and Wesley Nelson of Brosville.
A graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Nelson Family Cemetery, Luna Lake Road, Danville, with the Rev. David Turbyfill officiating.
The family will be at the residence, 3900 Martin Drive.

Kenneth Allen 'Ruffy' New
DANVILLE, Va. - Kenneth Allen "Ruffy" New, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Piney Forest Health Care Center, where he has resided for the past month.
Born Aug. 23, 1943, in Danville, he was a son of Ernest Paul New and Ruby Ellen Motley New.
He spent most of his life in Danville and was of the Baptist faith. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
He is survived by a son, Lee Paul New of Petersburg; a sister, Barbara Blankenship of Danville and two brothers, Ernest W. New of Danville and Jimmie L. New of Ringgold.
A graveside funeral will be held 3 p.m. Monday at Mountain View Cemetery with the Rev. Mark Smith officiating. Full military honors will be conducted by American Legion Dan River Post #1097 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister, 116 Starmont Drive.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541.

James Taylor Peters
DANVILLE, Va. - James Taylor Peters, 71, of 316 Hanley Circle, died Thursday, January 2, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center, due to complications from open heart surgery at Duke University.
Born January 19, 1931, in Clifton Forge, Va., he was the son of Taylor Jefferson Peters and Beatrice Wright Peters, who predeceased him.
Mr. Peters lived most of his life in the Danville area.
Mr. Peters retired after 36 years of service with the federal government, where he was a chief warrant officer 4 supervisor with the National Guard. He was a graduate of the U.S. Army Institute at Fort Eustis, Va., the Army Defense Electronic Radar School at Fort Bliss, Texas and Mechanical Operations School at Fort Sill, Okla. He was a member of Westover Baptist Church and the Retiree's Club of the Army Reserves.
He married Millie B. Peters May 24, 1949.
In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Rachel Peters and one daughter and son-in-law, Donna Peters Brown and Bobby Brown of Danville; and three grandchildren, Garrett Smith, Ashley Smith and Hannah Peters, all of Danville.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one sister, Edith Peters.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Billy Scearce and the Rev. Norman Graham officiating. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens, with military honors by the American Legion Dan River Post #1097.
The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel. At other times they will be at the residence.

Lynn Rogers
SENECA, S.C. - Lynn Roy Rogers, 75, of 132 Vickery Road, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
A native of Spring Garden, Va., Mr. Rogers was twice married, first to the late Eloise L. Rogers and presently to Lucy F. Rogers. Mr. Rogers was the son of the late Munford Stone and Dora Mays Rogers. He was a retired golf course superintendent, served in the U.S. Army, a veteran of World War II and was a member of Chestnut Level Baptist Church in Spring Garden, Va.
In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by a son, Lynn Grove Rogers and wife, Cathy, of Seneca; a daughter, Cynthia R. Smith and husband, Ray, of Greer; three stepdaughters, Teresa Whitmire of Salem, Jeanne Kelley of Clemson and Janet Buzhardt of Salem; a brother, Aylor G. Rogers of Blairs, Va.; two sisters, Anna R. Moore of Callands, Va. and Glen "Sister" Yates of Danville, Va.; four grandchildren and four step grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife and parents, brothers Orlin W. Rogers, Bryan J. Rogers and Fitzhugh H. Rogers and sisters, Susie R. Barbie and Nellie R. Owen predeceased Mr. Rogers.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, in the Davenport Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Oconee Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 1:30-3 p.m. on Sunday prior to the service at Davenport Funeral Home.

Ruth Hooker Wyatt
DANVILLE, Va. - Ruth Hooker Wyatt, 71, of 203 Baugh St., died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after six months of declining health.
Born May 19, 1931, in Stuart, she was a daughter of Harvey Perry Hooker and Lucy Maybell Hooker.
She lived most of her life in the Danville area and prior to her retirement, worked as a nursing assistant for Danville Regional Medical Center. She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by three daughters, Sylvia Abbott, Tina Hamilton and Delores Scearce, all of Danville; a brother, Harvey P. Hooker Jr. of the residence; a sister, Ruby Stapp of Dry Fork and six grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Vicky Scearce Barksdale.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Hershel Stone officiating. Interment will be in the Stapp Family cemetery in Dry Fork.

Lester J. Bartee
DANVILLE, Va. - Lester J. Bartee, 83, formerly of 430 Lansbury Drive, died Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at the Veterans' Administration Hospital in Salem.
Born Oct. 5, 1918, in Danville, he was a son of James Austin Bartee and Eula Adams Bartee.
He was married to Almalia Poole Bartee, who predeceased him. He was a member of North Main Baptist Church and was a charter and life member of the DAV. He was a member of the Ballard Pruitt VFW Post 647. He was a member of the American Legion Post 325. He was a member of the Caterpillar Club, the Poquoson 124 Redman Tribe and the Civitan Club. He had worked at Charlie's Stop and Shop prior to a decline in health.
Survivors include one stepson, Pete Poole of Danville; one sister, Eleanor Allen of Danville; eight stepgrandchildren; and 12 stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, James Aubrey Bartee.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Leroy Clack officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park with military honors performed by the American Legion Post 325 Honor Guard.

Silas Crews
CHATHAM, Va. - Silas Crews, 70, of 388 Hodnetts Mill Road, died Monday, May 6, 2002, at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville/Henry County.
Born April 27, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Joe Crews and Rhoda Coles Crews.
He was married to Shirley Temple Charleston Crews, who predeceased him. He was employed with the Diston Company in Danville and was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean War.
Survivors include three sons, Silas M. Crews Jr. of Danville, Ricky Crews of Burlington, N.C., and Charlie L. Crews of Texas; three daughters, Rochelle Crews Gwynn and Claudette Verner of Detroit and Pauline Renee Calloway of Philadelphia; one brother, Henry Crews of Danville; four sisters, Berkley Waller, Margaret Younger and Pauline Younger, all of Chatham, and Marie Younger of Flint, Mich.; and 12 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Crews and Reva Bigelow, and four brothers, John Crews, Buster Crews, Gilmore Crews and Paul Crews.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fairview Baptist Church with the Rev. Hubert White officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Baptist Church cemetery with military rites performed by VFW Post 4165 and DAV 46 of Altavista.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Friday at Miller Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence of a son, Silas Crews Jr., 260 Ferry Road in Danville.

John Bee Davis
DANVILLE, Va. - John Bee Davis, 85, of 508 Cabell St., died Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born June 24, 1916, in Halifax County, he was the son of Letcher Davis and Emma Trent Davis.
He was employed for many years at Danville Lumber Company and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include two daughters, Evelyn Coleman of Danville, Carolyn Davis of Los Angeles; five sons, John Davis Jr., Larry Davis, Sammy Davis, and James Davis, all of Danville, and William Davis of Richmond; two sisters, Melinda Harden and Mattie Chapman, both of Danville; and a number of grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Arbor Baptist Church in Halifax County with the Rev. Nelson Stamps serving as eulogist. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

ALTAVISTA, Va. - Carolyn Sue Dove, 65, of 327 Myrtle Lane, died Thursday, May 9, 2002, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born Nov. 10, 1936, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Hunt H. Dove and Bertha Poindexter Dove.
She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Nancy Renalds of Timberville.
The memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Kirby Smith officiating.

Mary Marshall Doss
EVINGTON, Va. - Mary Marshall Doss, 90, of 1719 Dearborn Road, Evington, died Thursday, May 9, 2002, at her home. She was the wife of the late Albert Aaron Doss.
Born October 26, 1911, in Danville, she was a daughter of the late George Washington Marshall and Martha Shumate Marshall. She was of the Primitive Baptist faith.
She is survived by two sons, Gerald Doss and his wife, Betty, of Rustburg and Herbert Doss and his wife, Anne, of Kernersville, NC; three daughters, Marie Reynolds and her friend, Harold Ramsey, and Dorothy Doss, all of Evington, and Ida Compton and her husband, Robert, of Hurt; eight grandchildren, Michael Compton, Stacy Compton, Brenton Purcell, Linda Reynolds, Pam Reynolds, Dawn Herrera, Sheila Fiest, and Kristin Doss; and two great grandchildren, Jason Fiest and Sarah Compton.
She was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
A funeral will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, May 12, 2002, in Finch & Finch Chapel by Elder Paul Clark. Burial will follow in Altavista Memorial Park.

Magnolia Easley
MT. RAINER, Md. - Magnolia Dixon Easley, 87, died Friday, May 3, 2002, at the residence.
Born Dec. 5, 1914, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Mariah Dixon and William Dixon.
Survivors include four daughters, Jean Campbell of District Heights, Md., Virginia Willis of Suitland, Md., the Rev. Mable Stephens of District Heights, and Viola Lawson of Waldorf, Md.; one son, William Easley of Mt. Rainer; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Herbert Dixon of Baltimore.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Banister Hill CME Church in Nathalie with the Rev. Francis Coates officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The viewing will be held one hour prior to the service.
