Clara Echols

DANVILLE, Va. - Clara Swanson Echols, 81, of 228 Grant St., died Monday, May 6, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 12, 1920, in Henry County, she was a daughter of Lewis Swanson and Mary Divens Swanson.

She was married to Thurman O. Echols Sr., who survives. She was a custodian for Danville Public Schools and was a member of Union Street Missionary Baptist Church, where she was on the deaconess board, missionary society and kitchen committee.

Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include three sons, the Rev. Thurman O. Echols Jr. of Axton, Herman U. Echols of the residence and the Rev. Darry O. Echols of Hampton; two daughters, Rosa E. Brown of Danville and Cloran E. Saunders of Danville; one brother, Johnnie Swanson of Baltimore; two sisters, Esther Mae Law of Danville and Sally Holley of Axton; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Loyal Baptist Church with Dr. Samuel Griffith officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

The viewing will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.

The family will be at the residence.

Todd Goss

DANVILLE, Va. - Michael Todd Goss, 27, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002, at the University of Washington Medical Center of cerebral aneurysm.

Born Feb. 3, 1975, in Eden, N.C., he was a son of Donald Lee Goss, who predeceased him, and Brenda Connock Goss, who survives.

He attended Danville Public Schools and was a graduate of Chatham High School and Danville Community College. He was a member of Woodberry Hills Baptist Church and was employed by West Mark Hotels, Division of Holland American Cruise Line, Skagway, Alaska.

Survivors, in addition to his mother of Danville, Va., include one sister, Susan Carol Goss of Danville, Va.; two brothers, Christopher Lee Goss of Danville, Va. and Donald Lee Goss Jr. of McKinney, Texas; and his maternal grandparents, William B. Connock and Helen Lundie Connock, of Danville, Va.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Lewis Harris officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Townes Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence of his mother, 127 Third Ave. W.

Marcus Leo 'Jack' Jackson

DANVILLE, Va. - Marcus Leo "Jack" Jackson, 85, of 169 Beverly Road, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health since 1981.

Born April 21, 1917 in Round Oak, Georgia, he was a son of Albert Earl Jackson and Myrtice McElhenny Jackson, who both predeceased him.

Mr. Jackson was married July 2, 1939 to Helen White Jackson, who survives. He lived most of his life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County areas where, prior to his retirement in 1981, he was employed as a salesperson with Roanoke City Mills, Inc. Mr. Jackson was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church where he served as Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent and was former chairman of the board of deacons.

Mr. Jackson was a member of American Legion Post 325 and attended Averett College. Mr. Jackson served as institutional director, scout master and was a member of The Order of The Arrow for the Boy Scouts.

He was a veteran of World War II in the U.S. Army 69th Infantry Headquarters Division. He was at the Battle of the Bulge and received a Bronze Star for bravery. He was a courageous, honest and brave man and a beloved father, husband and friend.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one son, David Marcus Jackson of Denver, Col.; two daughters, Patty J. Shortt of Richmond, Va. and Nancy J Dameron of Martinsville, Va.; one sister, Myranell J. Burch of Chauncey, Ga.; five grandchildren, Kathryn Garrett Jackson, Carolyn Brent Jackson, Thomas Lee Shore, Ann S. Shearer and Marica Leigh Dameron; and one great-granddaughter, Laurel Shore.

He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by two sisters, Virginia J. Wrenn and Hazel J. Bartee, and two brothers, Daniel Jackson and Albert E. Jackson.

The funeral will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 10, 2002 at Keen Street Baptist Church with the Revs. Tom Brown, Tom Wright and George Rumney officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park with military honors performed by American Legion Post 325.

The family received friends 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Keen Street Baptist Church and at other times at the residence.

Elizabeth Jones

DANVILLE, Va. - Elizabeth Fogleman Jones, 80, of 435 Mimosa Street, Danville, VA, died Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at the residence.

Born November 21, 1921, in Pittsylvania Co., VA., she was the daughter of Monroe Fogleman and Lottie Holley Thomas Fogleman, both deceased.

She was married to Brown Jones, living. Mrs. Jones lived all of her life in the Danville area where she attended Schoolfield Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and had worked at Dan River Mills during her early years. Her death was unexpected.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include her daughter, LaVonne Jones Sours and her husband, Eugene Sours of Danville; daughter, Jennifer Jones Richardson and her husband, Russell Richardson of Morristown, NJ; one son, Michael Jones of Martinsville, VA; a special friend, Kathy Arnold of Martinsville, VA; 4 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.

The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 10, 2002, at Mountain View Cemetery by the Rev. David Turbyfill.

The family received friends Thursday, May 9, 2002, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.

Memorial contributions may be made to Schoolfield Baptist Church Building Fund, 12 Schoolfield Drive, Danville, VA 24541.

Berta Morgan

DANVILLE, Va. - Berta Martin Morgan, 95, of 420 Cliff St., died Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born March 29, 1907 in Chattanooga, Tenn., she was a daughter of Joel McPherson Martin and Carrie Mae Harmon Martin.

She was married to Carl Willie Morgan, who predeceased her. She lived most of her life in the Danville area and was a member of Community Baptist Church, where she was in the church choir. She was also a member of South Hall Baptist Church for many years. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Ann Dooley of Danville and Linda M. Owen of Keeling; two sons, Carl Eugene Morgan and Richard D. Morgan, both of Danville; one sister, Martha M. Cooper of Cleveland, Tenn.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by three brothers, John H. Martin, Joel M. Martin and Oscar K. Martin, and four sisters, Louise Payne, Margaret Peters, Katherine Stoner and Ruth Martin.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Community Baptist Church with the Rev. James Albert officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Community Baptist Church and at other times at the residence.

George Rader Jr.

DANVILLE, Va. - George Albert Rader Jr., 61, of 759 Arlington Road, died Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 28, 1940, in Richmond, he was a son of George Albert Rader and Anne Amelia Luntsford Rader Vintila, and a stepson to Valean Vintila, who survives.

He was married to Francisca Reyes Rader, who survives. He lived most of his life in Danville and retired from the military after serving 23 years. He served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps. He was employed by Dan River Inc. as an electrician for 26 years before retiring. He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church; American Legion Memorial Post 325; Elks Lodge 227, where he was a past exalted ruler; Fraternal Order of Eagles; VFW; and scoutmaster of Troop 356 Schoolfield.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence and stepfather of Churchville, include three sons, George Albert Rader III of Keeling, William Thomas Rader of the U.S. Navy stationed in Italy and Joseph Keith Rader of Danville; one daughter, Linda Michelle Rader of the residence; two brothers, James Albert Blankenship of Ashland, Ohio and John Rae Vintila of Texas; four sisters, Virginia Ballangee of Fairfax, Jacqueline Horner of Richmond, Alice Lee Zayac of Schenectody, N.Y. and Helen Little of New Hebron, Miss.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ the King Lutheran Church with Pastor Jim Kleinfelter officiating. Interment will follow at Green Hill Cemetery with military honors performed by Dan River American Legion Post 1097.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.

Elizabeth Rodgers

EDEN, N.C. - Elizabeth Hairfield Rodgers, 86, of 1433 South Ave., died Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at Morehead Nursing Center.

Born in Henry County, she was the daughter of J.R. and Claudia Hairfield.

She was married to Sandy Joseph Rodgers, who predeceased her. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Draper.

Survivors include one son, Maynard Rodgers of Eden, N.C.; and one daughter, Mary Frances Stophel of Cascade; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one son, Bobby Joseph Rodgers; one grandson; five brothers; and five sisters.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fair Funeral Home chapel. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

The visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. Friday at Fair Funeral Home and at other times the family will be at the residence.

Janet Stephens

BLANCH, N.C. - Janet Leigh Stephens, 41, of 1383 Longs Mill Road, died Monday, May 6, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born July 22, 1960, she was the daughter of Martha James Stephens, who predeceased her, and Thomas Glen Stephens, who survives.

Survivors include one son, Eric Dewayne Stephens of the residence; five sisters, Stella Fitzgerald, Judy Smith and Joan Hunt, all of Danville, Emma Baynes and Kimberly Jones, both of Milton, N.C.; two brothers, Herbert James of Danville, and Oscar James of Roanoke.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Roosevelt Wiley serving as eulogist. Interment will follow at Ebenezer Baptist Church cemetery in Provdence, N.C.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

James Crittendon

DANVILLE, Va. - James Henry Crittendon, 80, of 84 Vandola Road, died Wednesday, August 14, 2002, at his residence.

Born Nov. 18, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Henry T. Crittendon and Sallie Bett Chilton Crittendon.

He was married to Evelyn Hardy Crittendon, who survives. He lived all of his life in Danville and the Vandola community. He was employed in maintenance at Dan River Mills for 49 years and was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Longview Friends Church and a member of the Dan River Retired Workers Club and the AARP.

He is survived by five daughters, Arlene Barrett of Mineral, Phyllis Burke of Dry Fork, Jeanette Gray of the Vandola community, Judy Bernard of Cumberland and Frances Jarrett of Danville; one brother, Garnett Crittendon of Newport News; three sisters, Mary Hardy and Mamie Lindsey, both of Danville, and Minnie Gammon of Newport News; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one daughter, Elizabeth Snead, two brothers, William Crittendon and George Crittendon, one sister, Laylia Frances Crittendon and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bennett Shelton and the Rev. Bill Bates and Rev. Matthew Pacifico officiating. Interment will follow at Manuel Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery in Dry Fork with military honors by the American Legion Dan River Post 1097 honor guard.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Janie Gregory

CALLANDS, Va. - Janie Collins Gregory, 79, of 17060 Franklin Turnpike, died Tuesday, August 13, 2002, at 8:45 at her sister's residence, 135 Angie Road.

Born in Pittsylvania County on January 20, 1923, she was the daughter of Cammie Collins and Kate Reynolds Collins, who both predeceased her.

She was married October 31, 1942, to Hassell Bernard Gregory Sr., who survives. She was a faithful member of Swansonville Pentecostal Holiness Church and had worked in the sewing room of Dan River Inc.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Jill G. and Harrison C. Bowman, both of Danville; one sister, Dee C. Gregory of Danville; and one granddaughter, Deane G. Renn, of Hampton.

She was predeceased by one son, H. Bernard Gregory, Jr. and two brothers, Randy Collins and Wesley Collins.

The funeral will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 16, 2002, at Swansonville Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Mike Hearp officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family received friends 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Swansonville Pentecostal Holiness Church and will receive friends at other times at the daughter's residence, 241 Angie Road.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Swansonville Pentecostal Holiness Church Land Fund, c/o Rev. Mike Hearp, 588 F.C. Beverly Road, Dry Fork, VA 24549.

Lossie Hayes

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Lossie Jenkins Hayes, 80, formerly of Ralee Dr., died Thursday at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born on September 20, 1921, in Danville, VA to Clyde Hart Jenkins and Nellie Swofford Jenkins. Mrs. Hayes was a homemaker. Preceding her in death were her husband, James P. Hayes in 1990, and her brother, Clyde Jenkins. Surviving are her daughters, Kathy H. Tilley of King; her son-in-law, Todd Tilley; two step-grandchildren, Adam and Amanda Tilley; three sisters, Carolyn McIver of Richmond, Va., Mary Fulton of Danville, Va. and Joyce McBride of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be held at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Friday at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care, 1100-C.S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Vogler Reynolda Road Chapel is serving the Hayes family.

Margaret Myers Keatts

DANVILLE, Va. - Margaret Myers Keatts, formerly of 103 Stanley Drive, died Thursday, August 15, 2002, at The Roman Eagle Memorial Home. She had been in declining health for the past two years and a resident at Roman Eagle Memorial Home for the past two weeks.

She was born in Pittsylvania County, Va., December 29, 1921, a daughter of the late Charlie Myers and Betty Barker Myers.

Mrs. Keatts was married to the late Howard Everett Keatts, who died September 3, 1994. She was a member of The Brush Arbor Baptist Church on Blair Loop Road, and was retired from Dan River Inc. Mrs. Keatts was educated in The Pittsylvania County public school system. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Danville Regional Medical Center.

Surviving are one daughter, Margaret Ann Cardwell of Ringgold, Va. and one son, Floyd B. Keatts of Moorefield Bridge Road, Danville. One sister, Lorene Shelton, Chatham, Va. Four grandchildren, Sherri Giannini, Danville, Scott Keatts, Cary, N.C., Ronald Thomas Wells, Jr., Danville and Christopher Wells, Ringgold, Va. Also four great-grandchildren, Cameron Giannini and Courtney Giannini, both of Danville, Va., Ronald T. Wells, III of Danville and Wyatt Thomas Wells, Ringgold.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 17, 2002, at 2 p.m. from The Townes Funeral Home Memorial Chapel by The Reverend Stephen R. Lamb. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home, Friday, August 16, 2002, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence, 103 Stanley Drive in The Sandy Shores Development.

James Knox

DANVILLE, Va. - James Lester Knox, 62, of 625 Cabell Street, died Tuesday, August 13, 2002, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 3, 1939, in Danville, he was the son of Len Knox and Mayola Knox.

He was employed by the J.P. Taylor Tobacco Company.

He is survived by one daughter, Theresa Santos of Galax; three sons, Jerry and Ray Sawyers and Jeffrey Knox, all of Galax; three sisters, Shirley Knox, Jackie Holland and Phyllis Holland, all of Danville; two brothers, Joseph Knox of Newberry, S.C. and Kenny Knox of Danville.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Samuel Griffith officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Carroll McCullock

CHATHAM, Va. - Carroll William "Big C" McCullock, 49, of 201 Woodlawn Academy Road, died August 14, 2002, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 19, 1953, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Jerry William "Jack" McCullock and Margaret Earl Keatts McCullock.

He is survived by two sisters, Phyllis McCullock and Janet M. Walker, both of Vernon Hill; and one brother, Jerry L. McCullock of Altavista.

The graveside service will be held 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Java Church of God of Prophecy Cemetery with the Rev. Albert Moser officiating.

The family will receive friends Friday 8 to 9 p.m. at the residence of Anne Moser, 201 Woodlawn Academy Road, Chatham.
