Robert Mitchell
BLANCH, N.C. - Robert Maryland Mitchell, of 282 High Rock School Road, died Tuesday, August 13, 2002, in Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.
Born July 17, 1916, in Person County, he was the son of Zackariah Mitchell and Susie Boyd Mitchell.
He was married to Mandeline Saunders Mitchell, who survives. He was a member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church and was a self-employed farmer prior to retirement.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Tony Lane Mitchell and Donald Bruce Mitchell, both of Blanch; one daughter, Tresca M. Byrd of Kernersville; one brother, John Henry Mitchell of Blanch; two sisters, Nannie Mae Corbett of Mebane and Minnie B. Jeffers of Blanch; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one daughter, Ruth M. Foster, one sister, Sylvia M. Lea, and five brothers, Lorenzo Mitchell, Alvis Mitchell, Chester Mitchell, Hunter Mitchell and Zackariah Mitchell.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Hamer Baptist Church with the Rev. Cephus Lea officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Fulton Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will receive friends 1 p.m. Saturday at the church and at other times at the residence of his son, Tony Mitchell, 565 High Rock School Road, Blanch. All arrangements are entrusted to Fulton Funeral Home in Yanceyville.
Emma Payne
DANVILLE, Va. - Emma Gunnell Payne, 51, of 937 N. Main Street, Apt. 1, died Wednesday, August 14, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 8, 1951, in Danville, she was the daughter of Harry Gunnell and Vaudie Norton Gunnell.
She lived most of her life in Danville and attended Moffett Memorial Baptist Church. She had been disabled for several years.
She is survived by one son. Jason Madden of Danville; one daughter, Crystal A. Madden of Danville; one sister, Linda Faye McCune of Ringgold Va.; and two grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday, August 17, 2002, at Danville Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Steve Carlton officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, 502 Holland Road, State Line Trailor Court #16.

Tommie Scearce
DANVILLE, Va. - Tommie Scearce, 71, of 8088 Mount Cross Road, died Wednesday, August 14, 2002, at his residence.
Born September 1, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Henry Scearce and Ada Turner Scearce.
He was married March 31, 1951, to Rosa Jarrett Scearce, who survives. He lived all of his life on Mount Cross Road in Pittsylvania County. He was a farmer and carpenter with Doug Jones Construction Company and had worked for John Daniel Construction Company for several years. He was a member of Piedmont Walkers Club and was of the Baptist faith. He had been in declining health for several years.
He is survived, in addition to his wife of the residence, by one daughter, Wanda Scearce Harger of Danville; two sisters, Mollie Merrick of Danville and Emily Lou Walker of Ruffin, N.C.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Barnes and the Rev. Gilbert Hawks officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel and will receive friends at other times at the residence.

Charles Scott
DANVILLE, Va. - Charles Hurt Scott, 49, of 142 Acorn Lane, died unexpectedly Wednesday, August 14, 2002, in Orlando, Fla.
Born July 21, 1953, in Danville, he was a son of Kenneth Pleasant Scott and Hazel Hodnett Scott.
He was married May 19, 1979, to the former Margaret Wyatt, who survives. He was educated in the Pittsylvania County School System and was a graduate of Chatham High School. He attended Danville Community College and was a graduate of the Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, Okla. He was vice-president of Wyatt Buick-Pontiac Inc. and was a member of the Danville City Council, having been first elected in 1998 and re-elected in May 2002.
He was a member of the Danville Redevelopment Housing Authority Board and he served on the board of the Dan River Small Business Center. He was former board member of the Danville Airport Commission and had served on the board of directors of both the Danville Chamber of Commerce and the Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church where he was a former member of the Administrative Board and served on several committees.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one daughter, Elizabeth Hodnett Scott, of the residence; one son, Kenneth Wyatt Scott, of the residence; two brothers, Kenneth P. Scott, Jr. of Richmond and William F. "Bill" Scott of Chatham.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jonathan Bennett officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Burial Park.
The family will be at the residence.

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Edward Gilbert "E.G." Strader, 78, of 7739 Park Springs Road, died Thursday, August 15, 2002, at his residence.

Ralph Turpin
COTTONWOOD, Ariz. - Ralph Nelson Turpin of Cottonwood, AZ died August 5, 2002.
Born April 27, 1947, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Henry Nelson Turpin and Louise Brown Turpin of Danville, who both survive.
He was married to Sharon Williamson Turpin of Cottonwood, AZ, who also survives. He attended George Washington High School and entered the United States Navy following graduation. He remained in the Navy for 20 years and retired with the rank of First Class Petty Officer. After his military retirement, he was employed as the Eastern Regional Safety Director for Brown & Root until retiring due to illness.In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by one daughter, Rhonda T. Shearer of Arizona; one son, Robert N. Turpin, serving in the U.S. Navy in Texas; two sisters, Rachel Taylor and Rosemary Bennett, both of Danville; and two grandchildren.Burial services were conducted in Arizona.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Ferry Road Friends Church in Danville.The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice Home Care Services.
Gladys White
KEELING, Va. - Gladys Dunn White, 84, of 6137 Slatesville Road, died Wednesday, August 14, 2002, at her residence. She had been in declining health for eighteen months.
Born July 26, 1918, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of the late Luther Douglas Dunn and the late Fannie Mae Stange Dunn.
She was married to John Kent White who predeceased her December 4, 1998. She attended Mount Tabor Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher for more than fifteen years. She lived most of her life in Keeling, Virginia. She graduated from Oak Level High School in Halifax County as Valedictorian of her class. She was a member of the Support Group for Keeling Volunteer Fire Department and she was a member of the Margaret Hankins Homemaker's Club. She was a homemaker and farmed with her late husband.
She is survived by two sons, Lonnie K. White and Kevin D. White, both of Keeling; one daughter, Joan W. Shelton of Java; one sister, Inez D. Ferrell of Newport News; four granddaughters, Brenda S. Hedrick, Pamela S. Adams and Melody S. Bushley, all of Java, and Kasey M. White of Keeling; two grandsons, Rodney F. Shelton of Java and Kent L. White of Lynchburg; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Brooks Dunn and Irvin Dunn, and one sister, Avis D. Whitlow.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Herman Absher officiating.
The family received friends 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and will receive friends at other times at the residence.

Joseph 'Joe' Campbell
DANVILLE, Va. - Joseph "Joe" Campbell, 101, of 208 Westhampton Avenue, Danville, Va., passed away Tuesday morning, Dec. 3, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, where he had been a patient since March 1999.
He was born in Bay Minette, Ala. on Feb. 14, 1901, to Robert Owen Campbell and Grace (Wilson) Campbell. Most of his life was spent in Mobile.
In Mobile, he worked as a men's clothing salesman for almost 60 years at establishments such as Buckman's, Gehrhart's, Steins, Melvin Webers, London Woolen Mills, Robert Hall, Monty's in Prichard and Paulmont's in the Bel Air Mall.
He was a member of the Nor-Dan Church of Christ, being baptized into Christ at age 88 by Minister John M. Hill.
He is survived by his only daughter, Josephine "Josie" Miner-Storms and her husband, Jimmy Storms of the residence; one brother, Robert "Louey" Campbell of Mobile, Ala.; a niece, Yvonne Bryant of Mobile, Ala.; four grandchildren, Mark Miner of Vinton, Joseph Miner of Cincinnati, Ohio, Carmen King of Fayetteville, N.C. and Roy Miner Jr. of Richmond. Nine great-grandchildren also survive.
In addition to many other relatives in the Mobile area, he is survived by his long time friend, Paul G. Reynolds and his devoted visitor, Andrew Hicks, both of Danville.
He was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters, his former wife, C. Bernice "Deese" Campbell and his former son-in-law, Roy W. Miner Sr.
The family will receive visitors Thursday, Dec. 5, 6-8 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home. Interment will be private.
His daughter suggests that memorials may be made to the Danville Humane Society and mailed to P.O. Box 3352, Danville, VA 24543 or 208 Westhampton Ave., Danville, VA 24541, honoring his love for all animals.

Mary Elizabeth Cook
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Elizabeth Cook, 83, of 212 Seay St., died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002 at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born May 9, 1919, in Danville, she was the daughter of Albert Thornton and Mary Cook Thornton.
She was a retired nursing assistant for Danville Regional Medical Center.
She was a member of the Missionary Circle and also a member of the Order of Tents. She served as a pianist for several churches in the Danville area.
She is survived by one brother, Matthew Cook of Hartford, Conn.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Liberty Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jasper Watkins Sr. officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 6-7 p.m. Thursday at Smith and Son Funeral Chapel and at other times will be at the residence.

Mary Vaden Coles
JAVA, Va. - Mary Vaden Coles, 87, died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at Stratford Health Care Center in Danville.
She was the daughter of Giles Henry Vaden and Mary Booth Vaden.
She was married to William P. Coles Jr., who predeceased her.
She was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth "Lisa" Coles Geyer, Mary Patton Coles Meadows, both of Java and Constance Whitehead of Tucson, Ariz.; a son, John Hurt Whitehead III of Urbanna; two brothers, Edwin B. Vaden of Charlottesville and William C. Vaden of Hamilton, Ga.; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Emanuel Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dr. John S. Ruef officiating. Interment will be in Chatham Burial Park.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Mary L. Jones, of 721-33rd St., died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at her residence.
Born May 13, 1932, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Marshall Jones and Alice Graves Jones.
She was a member of New Ephesus Baptist Church in Ruffin, N.C., the NAACP and the Voter's League in Newport News. She was employed with the VA Hospital before retirement.
She was the last survivor of her immediate generation.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at New Ephesus Baptist Church in Ruffin, N.C. with the Rev. William Lee officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Aubrey Kent Lindsey
KERNERSVILLE, N.C. - Mr. Aubrey Kent Lindsey, 81, passed away on Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, surrounded by family and friends.
He was born March 29, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, a son of A.C. and Myrtle Shelton Lindsey. Mr. Lindsey was of the Baptist faith. He was associated with the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in Danville, Va. and was a Master Mason at the Kent Lodge #305 in Ringgold, Va. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served in the Pacific during World War II and retired from the ITT Grinnell Company after 36 years of dedicated service.
Mr. Lindsey was preceded in death by his children, Bobby L. Lindsey, Jane L. Pond and Donald Ray Lindsey; brother, Billie Franklin Lindsey and sister, Marion Jewel Lindsey.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jessie McCormick Lindsey; brother, Berkley Lindsey; sisters, Lorena Adams and Ruth L. Cox, all of Danville, Va.; two grandsons, Lindsey A. Pond and L. Kent Pond of Chester, Va.; two granddaughters, Sara L. Butcher of Kernersville and Amanda E. Park of Richmond, Va.; and five great-grandchildren, Kyle Butcher, Katyn Butcher, John Pond, James Pond and Cole Park.
The funeral service will be from the graveside at 11 a.m. Friday, December 6 at Highland Burial Park, Danville, Va., with the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. Masonic Rites will be given by Kent Lodge #305.

Melvin Meade Martin
DANVILLE, Va. - Melvin Meade Martin, 73, formerly of 819-B Holland Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002.
Born Oct. 22, 1929, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Charles Emory Martin and Gertrude Burnett Martin.
He lived most of his life in the Danville area.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from the food vending business.
He was a member of Masonic Lodge Roman Eagle #122, a life member of the Danville Scottish Rite Bodies, DAV Archer T. Gammon Chapter and Omar Shrine Temple.
He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his second wife, Chris Matsassos New Martin, he is survived by two daughters, Julia Martin of Danville and Betty Duncan of Roxboro, N.C.; one brother, Paul Martin of Danville; one sister, Betty Jenkins of Tidewater, Va.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife, Elizabeth Ferris Martin, he is predeceased by one brother, Harold Martin.
The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home with the Rev. James Mayes officiating. Interment will be at Highland Burial Park with Masonic Rites by the Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge 122.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, Julia Martin, 600 Main St., Apt. 910, Danville House.
