Raymond Wilbur 'Tuny' Mathes
DANVILLE, Va. - Raymond Wilbur "Tuny" Mathes, 78, of 448 Bowe St., died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at 8:25 a.m., at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 9, 1924, in Danville, he was the son of James Eugene Mathes and Emma Webb Mathes, both of whom predeceased him.
He was a member of Longview Friends Church where he was Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, member of the church council, a trustee and a musician. He was a member of Fieldcresters Gospel Quartet for several years and was a member of Tuny & The Twilighters. He was also a member of the Tightsqueeze Philharmonic. He enjoyed playing the guitar very much. His greatest joy was playing in church. He served in the U.S. Air Force during peacetime. He had worked as an Insurance Underwriter for American General Insurance Company.
He married Virginia Davis Mathes on Jan. 9, 1952.
He is survived by three sons, Raymond Maurice Mathes of Danville, Duane C. Mathes and his wife, Pamela Mathes, of Montana and Lloyd T. Anderson and his wife, Ruth H. Anderson, of Lynchburg; a daughter, Bonita M. Hines and her husband, Alan R. Hines, of Danville; a brother, William W. Mathes of Sacramento, Calif.; two sisters, Becky M. Dalton of Danville and Sarah M. Durham of Gretna; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchildren. He is also survived by several cousins.
He was predeceased by a brother, James E. Mathes Jr.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Longview Friends Church with the Rev. Fred Kensler officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence, 448 Bowe St., off Berry Hill Road, Danville.

Mildred Fuller McGlaughlin
RALEIGH, N.C. - Mildred Fuller McGlaughlin, 90, of 411 Marlowe Road, died Dec. 4, 2002 in the Rex Hospital in Raleigh. She had been in declining health for 6 years and in the hospital for the last three days.
Born Dec. 23, 1911, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Archer Lloyd Fuller and Mary Jessie Taylor Fuller.
She had lived in Danville and in Myrtle Beach, S.C. prior to moving to Raleigh, N.C. She was educated in the Danville Public School System and attended the former Stratford College and Longwood College. She was a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church and a former member of the Danville Wednesday Club.
She was married to Cecil Webster McLaughlin on April 19, 1941. He predeceased her on December 5, 1994.
She is survived by one daughter, Mary Fuller McGlaughlin Sessoms and husband Ronald of Raleigh, N.C.; one brother, Archer L. Fuller and wife Betty of Danville, Va; two nieces, Kitty Penn Fuller Soutter of Raleigh, N.C. and Elizabeth Archer Fuller of Brevard, N.C.; and one nephew, Davis Heatwole and wife Sharolyn of Richmond, Va.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Carlton Luther Redd
HALIFAX, Va. - Carlton Luther Redd, 88, of 1005 Hall's Trail, Halifax, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born in Pittsylvania County, Va. on April 7, 1914, he was the son of Eddie Washington Redd and Mary Roach Redd.
He was married to Dalhia McGregor Redd.
He was a member of the St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Ester R. Reaves of South Boston; Evelyn R. Saunders and Lorene R. Beard, both of Halifax; three sons, Monroe Redd and Samuel David Redd, both of Halifax and Leslie Redd of Java; 17 grandchildren, 29 great-great grandchildren, and many great-great-great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery, with the Rev. John S. Ruef officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 Thursday at Powell Funeral Home and 10-11 a.m. Friday at the church fellowship hall. At other times they will be at the home of his daughter Evelyn Saunders, 1128 Leighwood Trail, Halifax.

Irvin Overby 'Son' Stowe
DRY FORK, Va. - Irvin Overby "Son" Stowe, 96, formerly of Dry Fork Road, died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Oct. 13, 1906, in Dry Fork, he was the son of Ulysses Grant Stowe and Rebecca Daniel Stowe.
He was a self-employed farmer and member of Hopewell United Methodist Church. He was the last surviving member of his generation.
He was married to Lessie Shelton Stowe, who predeceased him in 1995.
He is survived by two sons, Douglas Stowe of Dry Fork and I.D. Stowe of Danville; a daughter, Ann Stowe Sigmon of Danville; 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a son, Wellons A. Stowe; a daughter, Isabelle Stowe Compton; four brothers, Henry Stowe, David Stowe, Major Stowe and Thomas Stowe; and two sisters, Elizabeth Stowe and Essie Stowe Herndon.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Hopewell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Clay Knick and Pastor Bob Whalley officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hopewell United Methodist Church.

Viola Brandon
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. -Viola J. Brandon, 89, of 1039 New Haven Church Road, died Friday, June 14, 2002.
Born December, 27, 1912 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Annie Connaly Jones and Moses Jones.
She was married to John Walter Brandon, who predeceased her.
Survivors include one daughter, Annie Whitlock of the residence; one son, John Willie Brandon of the residence; one adopted daughter, Jean White of Danville, Va.; two sisters, Annie Mae Jeffers of Milton and Minnie Mae Jeffers of Alton; five brothers, Moses Jones of Milton, Willie Jones of Brooklyn, N.Y., Robert Jones of Alton, Va., Harvey Jones of Ringgold, Va. and Joe Jones of Danville; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at the Greater Brandon Chapel Baptist Church in Alton, Va. Interment will follow at the Brandon family cemetery.
A viewing will be held noon-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Plenty Funeral Home Chapel and also one hour prior to the funeral service.

Donald Harris
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Donald Franklin Harris, 71, of 754 SE Hidden River Drive, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Born in Springfield, Ohio, he was the son of LeRoy Harris and Dossie Harris.
He was married November 4, 2001 to Nancyann Harris, who survives. In 1954 he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps and was awarded a senatorial commission by the Republican Senatorial Inner Circle in 1991. He was awarded the Humanitarian Award in Danville in 1985, the Restaurant Man of the Year award in Tennessee in 1968, and named to the Shoney's Founders Hall of Fame Award in 1983. He was the president and founder of the Danville Chapter of the March of Dimes from 1977-92 and was owner and president of the MFM Restaurant Group.
Survivors include one daughter, Pamela Harris McCauley of Danville; one son, Phillip Taylor Harris of Danville; two sisters, Rose Hancock and Mary Lodge, both of Matoaca, Va.; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, June 20, 2002 at Townes Funeral Home in Danville, Va.
The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to The Danville chapter of the March of Dimes.

Jimmie Pannell
CHATHAM, Va. - Jimmie Lee Pannell, 98, of 8012 Anderson Mill Road, died Sunday night, June 16, 2002 at his residence.
Born February 29, 1904, he was a son of Jim Pannell and Hurley Berger Pannell.
He was a farmer and a member of Universal Outreach Church in Bedford.
Survivors include four sons, Curtis Pannell, Morris Pannell and Sylvester Pannell, all of Gretna and Lewis Pannell of Danville; four daughters, Shirley Jefferson of Chatham, Stella Bennett and Alberta Royal, both of Gretna and Ammie Johnson of Pittsville; one brother, William Pannell of Sandy Level; and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three sons, Len Pannell, James Pannell and Paige Pannell, one daughter, Dorsey Logan, three brothers, Fred Pannell, Algie Pannell and Kelly Pannell, and two sisters, Myrtle Witcher and Pearl Jenkins.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Miller Funeral Home Chapel with Bishop Edward Crews officiating. Interment will follow at the Burning Bush Holiness Church cemetery in Pittsville.
A viewing will be held 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.

Elder Lester Stewart
EDEN, N.C. - Elder Lester Gilbert Stewart, 92, of 1593 Town Creek Road, died Monday, June 17, 2002 at Morehead Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Rockingham County.
He was married to Helen McDaniel Stewart, who survives. He was a member of Round Peak Primitive Baptist Church and was the retired owner and operator of Stewart's Store.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Ronnie Stewart of Eden; one grandchild; and four step-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his stepdaughter, Joy Stewart Johnson.
The funeral will be held 4 p.m. Thursday at Fair Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Dan River Primitive Baptist Church.

Myrtle Wilson
DANVILLE, Va. - Myrtle Langhorne Wilson, 72, of 320 Hawthorne Drive, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been a resident of Gretna Health Care Center for two years.
Born January 15, 1930 in Danville, she was a daughter of William Dabney Langhorne, who predeceased her, and Florence Mitchell Langhorne, who survives.
She was married to Charles H. Wilson Jr., who predeceased her. She lived most of her life in Danville and worked as a secretary for Dr. John Marcella and Dr. Richard Patterson prior to her retirement. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany.
Survivors, in addition to her mother of Richmond, include one son, Dabney Langhorne Wilson of Chatham; two daughters, Cindy Wilson Shoemaker of Richmond and Susan Wilson Clark of Lynchburg; one sister, Mary Dabney Hurley of Bluefield; and nine grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Mountain View Cemetery with the Rev. Thomas Wright officiating.
The family will receive friends 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her son, Dabney Langhorne Wilson, 780 Cherrystone Road in Chatham.

Betty Armstrong
DANVILLE, Va. - Betty Jean Lyons Armstrong, 71, of 304 Hickory Forest Road, died June 16, 2002, at Piney Forest Health Care following several years of declining health.
Born January 3, 1931, in Staunton, she was the daughter of the late Achilles Finney (Doc) Lyons and the late Mary Freed Lyons.
She was married on October 28, 1948, to Willard Browning Armstrong, who survives. Mrs. Armstrong had lived most of her life in Danville. She had retired from Fieldcrest Mills in Eden where she had worked in the Maintenance Dept. after several years of service and she had worked at the former S.S. Kresge Five & Dime Store at the Food Counter. Mrs. Armstrong was a member of the Shermont Baptist Church and a member of the Royal Gems Senior Citizens Group.
Survivors include her husband, Willard Browning Armstrong of the residence; her son, Michael Wayne Armstrong and his wife, Judy Armstrong of Danville, Va.; her son, Richard Browning Armstrong and his wife, Barbara Armstrong of Dry Fork, Va.; her brother, Charles Lyons of Chester, Va.; her sister, Ruth L. Myrtle of Staunton, Va.; five grandchildren, Christopher Armstrong, Richie Armstrong, Thomas Armstrong, Jennifer Armstrong, and Jordan Armstrong; and two great-grandchildren, P.J. Armstrong and Ryan Armstrong.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 19th from the graveside in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Reverend Bill Soyars. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends Tuesday night from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and will receive friends at other times at the residence of her son Mike and Judy Armstrong, 1906 Allen Place.

LONG ISLAND, Va. - Robert Deshay Davis, 21, of 268 Wyatt Road, died Sunday morning, June 16, 2002, in the Renan community as the result of an automobile accident.
Born March 20, 1981, in Lynchburg, he was the son of Robert and Dorothy Davis, who survive.
He was employed by Dollar General in South Boston and was a member of Miracle Revival Fellowship Holiness Church.
In addition to his parents, survivors include one daughter, Shaqur Graves of Gretna; two brothers, Antonia Lamont Davis of the residence, and Wayne Davis of the U.S. Navy stationed in Hawaii; and three sisters, Pearline Glass, Paulette Davis and Pamela Davis, all of Long Island.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Miracle Revival Fellowship Holiness Church with Bishop Milton Waller officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

DANVILLE, Va. - Lula Sumpter Smith Franks, 100, of 211 Hampton Drive, died June 16, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home following several years of declining health and three weeks at Roman Eagle.
Born Sept. 10, 1901, in Danville, she was the daughter of Ellis Y. Smith and Daisey Whittaker Smith Harper.
She was married May 19, 1918, to Robert Luther Franks, who predeceased her April 13, 1952. She lived all of her life in Danville. She had worked for the former Danville Knitting Mill and Dan River Mills Inc. for a number of years prior to becoming a full time homemaker. She was a member of the Mosley Memorial United Methodist Church and a member of the former Nora Mosley Bible Class.
Survivors include three daughters, Ruth F. Seiple and Evelyn F. Evans, both of Danville, and Patricia F. Childress of High Point, N.C.; two sons, Russell L. Franks of Danville and Phillip E. Franks of Ringgold; 12 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters.
The memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Gary Milstead officiating.

GRETNA, Va. - Robin Lena Graves, 20, of 237 Glade Road, died Sunday morning, June 16, 2002, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 16, 1981, in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of Henry Lewis and Edith Graves, who survive.
She was last employed by Parker Co. in Lynchburg and was a member of Staunton Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, survivors include one daughter, Shaqur Graves of the residence; two sisters, Lashanda Graves of the residence and Tilly Waller of Hurt; four brothers, Gregory Graves and Andrea Crews, both of Altavista, Timothy Waller of Brookneal and Jerry Graves of Halifax; a maternal great-grandmother, Mollie Graves of Lynch Station; and a paternal great-grandmother, Gracie Stone of Gretna.
