Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Rev. Lewis Stewart

DANVILLE, Va. - The Rev. Lewis John William Stewart, 78, of 432 Heritage Drive, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after three years of declining health.

Born June 15, 1924, he was the son of Thomas Stewart and Sylvia Spinger Stewart.

He was married to Evelyn Fuller Stewart, who survives. He had lived in Florida for a number of years before moving to Danville nine years ago. He was the hospital chaplain for a number of years and had served as pastor at Rivermont Baptist Church and Willis Memorial Baptist Church in Cascade. He was a member of Keeling Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Mark Stewart and Scott Stewart, both of Danville; one sister, Helen James of Phoenix, Ariz.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Keeling Baptist Church with Pastor Tom Bailey officiating. Interment will be private.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Curtis Turner

DANVILLE, Va. - Curtis Deroy Turner, 88, formerly of 1721 Aspen St., died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center.

Born April 18, 1914, in Danville, he was the son of Otis Lambert Turner Sr. and Dora Hughes Turner.

He was married April 18, 1936, to Avo Cates Turner, who survives. He lived most of his life in Danville and retired from the city of Danville where he worked in maintenance with the Public Works Department and the City of Danville Electric Department. He was of the Holiness faith and attended the First Pentecostal Holiness Church.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Garnett L. Turner of Vienna, Ga., and Rodger D. Turner of Blairs; one daughter, Joyce Perkins Gibbs of Danville; two sisters, Sadie Corn of Williamston, S.C., and Lottie Samuels of Danville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one brother, Otis L. "Billy" Turner Jr. and two sisters, Dorothy Allen and Geraldine Hill.

The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Steve Lamb officiating.

The family will receive friends 7:30 p.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence of his daughter, 408 Pinecrest Drive.

Robert ‘Buddy' Webb

DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Lewis ‘Buddy' Webb, 54, of 121 South Hunter St., died Monday, June 17, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 3, 1947, in Danville, he was the son of Junus Webb, who survives, and the late Valetta Harvell Webb.

He was married to Jean Adkins Webb, who survives. He lived all of his life in Danville and was of the Baptist faith. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, two Purple Hearts, Bronze Star Medal, Navy Commendation Medal and Combat Action Ribbon. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1969 due to permanent disability.

In addition to his wife of the residence and father of Danville, survivors include one daughter, Joy Tolley of Arizona; and two sisters, Shirley Rhodes and Nancy Harmon, both of Danville.

The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Richard Markham officiating. Interment will follow with military honors performed by American Legion Post 1097 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.

Louise T. Brown

DANVILLE, Va. - Etta Louise Toler Brown, 60, of 1444 Mount Cross Road, died 4:20 a.m. Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center in Danville.

Born Jan. 23, 1942, in Danville, she was the daughter of Robert and Rebecca McBride.

She was first married to John Toler and later married Roy Brown, both predeceased her. She lived her whole life in Danville. She was a member of Timberlake Baptist Church.

Survivors include one brother, David Paul McBride of Hampton; one sister, Mary Elizabeth Hawker of Caswell County, N.C.; two sons, Ricky Toler and Robert Toler, both of Danville; three daughters, Rhonda Brown and Debra Sue Oakes, both of Danville, and Tammy Toler of Durham, N.C.; and six grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Barker Funeral Home with the Rev. Walter Yancey officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel, 2025 North Main St. in Danville.

Joan Davis

DRY FORK, Va. - Joan Coates Davis, 68, of 4900 Whitmell School Road, Lot 47, died Friday, May 31, 2002, at the residence.

Born Aug. 18, 1933, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Clem Coates and Elsie Shelton Coates.

She was married to Marvin I. Davis, who predeceased her July 16, 1990. She lived most of her life in Halifax and Danville and was a member of Riverview Baptist Church. She had been in declining health for the past ten years.

Survivors include one son, David A. Davis of Dry Fork; two brothers, Leroy Coats and Clarence Coates, both of Halifax; two sisters, Peggy Clark of Nathalie, and Frances Conner of Halifax; and two grandchildren.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Clem Coates, James Coates, and Andrew Coates; and three sisters, Grace Childress, Ada Lloyd and Cathryn Lowery.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Duane O. Blevins officiating. Interment will follow at 1 p.m. at Halifax Memorial Gardens in Halifax County.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.

John Martin

DANVILLE, Va. - John Lee Martin, 51, of 154 Kentuck Road, H62, died Friday, May 31, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born July 25, 1951, in Pittsylvania County, he was the daughter of Emerson Martin and Lucille S. Martin.

He was married to Rosa Martin, who survives. He was a laborer for Dan River Mills Inc. and was a member of Bibleway Church.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of Danville, include three daughters, T'Leen Martin, Toshia Martin, and Jonica Martin, all of Danville; three brothers, Timothy A. Martin, Henry L. Martin, and Steve L. Martin, all of Danville; two sisters, Cynthia D. Hardy, and Annie Mae Martin, all of Danville; and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bibleway Cathedral with Apostle L.G. Campbell officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemtery. The viewing will be held 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the residence, Airside Apartment, Apt. H62.

Beulah Melton

DANVILLE, Va. - Beulah Hundley Melton, 80, of 5161 Golf Club Road, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at 1:45 p.m. at Lynchburg Medical Care Center in Lynchburg.

Born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia on October 15, 1921, She was the daughter of Posey Green and Mattie L. Buckner Hundley, both deceased.

She was married to Arnold Lee Melton, who died July 11, 1995. She was a member of Shermont Baptist Church where she taught the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class; was a choir member and a member of the Flower Committee. She had worked for Dan River, Inc.

Survivors include one son, Robert L. Melton of Rustburg, Va.; daughter-in-law, Mary Setliff Melton of Rustburg, Va.; brother and sister-in-law, Percey Allen and Nevada Hundley of Henderson, Ky.; grandchildren, Sandra Leigh Melton and Cathy Melton Phillips, both of Rustburg, Va.; great-grandchildren, Taylor Phillips and Madison Phillips, both of Rustburg, Va.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held Sunday, June 2, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. at Shermont Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Soyars officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens, Danville, Va.

The family received friends Saturday, June 1, 2002, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Shermont Baptist Church, 781 Mount Cross Road, Danville, Va.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to Shermont Baptist Church, 781 Mount Cross Road, Danville, Va. 24540 or to a charity of your choice.

Francelle Michaels

DANVILLE, Va. - Francelle Barden Michaels, of 176 Acorn Lane, died Friday, May 31, 2002, at Duke Hospital.

Born Dec. 12, 1925, in Magnola, N.C., she was the daughter of Frank Barden and Anne Belle Farabeau Barden.

She was married to William Edward Michaels Sr., who predeceased her in 1989.

She was a graduate of East Carolina University, a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, the Wednesday Club, and the Danville Golf Club.

Survivors include one son, Bill Michaels of Washington, D.C.; two daughters, Suzanne Michaels of Lynchburg, and Deborah Michaels of Newport News.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany by Father James Mathieson. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Monday at Townes Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

The family suggests memorials may be made to Danville Humane Society or American Cancer Society.

Luther Purgason

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Luther Samuel Purgason, age 85, passed away May 30, 2002 at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, VA, after a brief illness.

He was born December 3, 1916, in Reidsville, North Carolina to the late Pinkney Scott Purgason and Clemmie Throckmorton Purgason, also of Reidsville. He graduated from Practical Bible College, Binghamton, New York in 1940. He attained the rank of sergeant with the US Army (Headquarters Detachment Army Forces Middle Pacific) and was stationed in Hawaii. He retired from Binswanger Glass in Richmond, Virginia in 1982 and moved to Danville, VA where he resided until 2001. He was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church in Danville. In the fall of 2002, he moved to Charlottesville, VA and resided at RoseWood Village Assisted Living.

He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Price and son-in-law Charlie Price of Charlottesville; granddaughter Karen Price of Denver, Colorado; niece Yvonne Davis of Reidsville, NC; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Dewey Matherly of the Danville area.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 3, 2002 at 10:00 am at Woodlawn Baptist Church in Danville by the Rev. W.C. Blalock, followed by a graveside service at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home in Danville, Sunday, June 2, 2002 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at RoseWood Village in Charlottesville for their caring and loving devotion. Donations may be made in his memory to Woodlawn Baptist Church (Danville).

Maybelle Hackworth Quarles

PITTSVILLE, Va. - Maybelle Hackworth Quarles, age 73, of 4753 Pittsville Road, Pittsville, died Friday, May 31, 2002.

Born January 26, 1929 in Campbell County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Columbus Hackworth and Bertha Wilson Hackworth. Mrs. Quarles was predeceased by her husband, R.C. "Joe" Quarles and a sister, Myrtle Hackworth. She was a retired employee of the Lane Company and was a member of Summersett Baptist Church.

She is survived by three sons, W.C. Quarles of Gretna, Danny Quarles and his wife Kay of Pittsville and James Quarles of Gretna; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Duane Brumfield of Gretna and Wanda and Randall Haymore of Danville; three sisters, Mamie Pittmon of Hurt, Sally Pagans of Vinton and Virginia Parks of Elkton, Maryland; seven grandchildren, Crystal Quarles, Valerie Quarles, Sharon Quarles, Malerie Quarles, Jeremy Quarles, Brandon Brumfield and Shanna Haymore; a great-grandchild, Cody Payne.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 3, 2002 at Summersett Baptist Church by Rev. Bert Johnson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 4753 Pittsville Road, Pittsville.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Gretna Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 14, Gretna, Va. 24557 or Cool Branch Rescue, P.O. Box 54, Penhook, Va. 24137.

Verla Skawski

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Verla Walker Skawski, 90, died May 30, 2002.

She was first married to George W. Walker, and later to Matthew J. Skawski, both predeceased her. She lived in Danville prior to moving to Alexandria in 1945.

Survivors include one son, Keister Lee Walker; one daughter, Jean O. Jenkins; and one brother, Wyndom Clifton.

The graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Mountain View Cemetery.

Gracie Lee Stone

DANVILLE, Va. - Gracie Lee Stone, 73, of 688 Holland Road, died Thursday, May 30, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Hospital.

Born September 11, 1928, she was a daughter of Dwight William Stone Sr. and Dora Alice Stone.

She worked for Dan River Mills in the inspection department.

She is survived by one brother, Iky Jarvis Stone and wife, Treva of Huntersville, N.C.; two nieces, Joy Stone and Tiffany Phillips, both of Huntersville, N.C. and two nephews, Randy Stone of Huntersville, N.C. and Raymond Lee Holder III of Newark, Delaware; two great-nieces, Courtney Bryant and Haley Stone, both of Huntersville, N.C. and four great-nephews, Dustin Bryant, Cody Bryant, Jonathan Stone and Devin Bryant, all Huntersville, N.C.

Gracie "Cricket" Stone

DANVILLE, Va. - Gracie Lea "Cricket" Stone, 73, of 688 Indian Valley Road, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 11, 1928, in Danville, she was the daughter of Dwight Stone and Dora Jarvis Stone.

She lived all her life in the Danville area and was of the Baptist faith. She was employed in the Inspection Room of Dan River Mills.

She had been in declining health for the past three years.

Survivors include one sister, Alleen Holder of Wilmington, Del.; and two brothers, Dwight Stone Jr. of Danville, and Steven Benny Stone of Charlotte, N.C.

The memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Wilson officiating. Interment will be private.

The family suggests memorials may be made to Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, Va. 24541.

Walter Bridges Jr.

SANFORD, N.C. - Walter Bridges Jr.,75,a long-time resident of Danville, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002.

He was born September 13, 1927, in Leaksville, N.C.

He graduated from George Washington High School and attended Hampton-Sydney University, excelling at both places in football as team co-captain and making All American.

He spent time in the Coast Guard. He also had a career with Nationwide Insurance and was a top salesman.

He also worked with the Department of Transportation, retiring as Personnel Director of the DMV in Raleigh.

His first wife, Peggy Arrington, of Danville, Va., predeceased him.

In addition to his second wife, Annie Lee Dorsett Denesuk Bridges, of the residence, he is survived by five daughters, Pencie Crews and Fran Bridges, both of Greensboro, Norma Tesch of Durham and Donna Woolard and Helen Williams, both of Sanford; and nine grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at the St. Luke United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom Loftis and the Rev. Michael Coppock officiating.

A visitation will be held 6:30-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Ladies Parlor of St. Luke United Methodist Church.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the Mary Tullock Fund of St. Luke United Methodist Church or Community Hospice of Sanford.
