Audrey Carson

DANVILLE, Va. - Audrey Scearce Riddle Carson, 79, 2860 Mount Cross Road, died Dec. 8, 2002 in Riverside Health Care Center after a decline in health for the past seven years.

Born Sept. 6, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Charles B. Scearce and Elsie Shumate Scearce.

She had lived all of her life in the Westover Community of Pittsylvania County and Danville. She had retired from Barbee Fabrics,where she worked as a sales clerk.

She was a member of Westover Baptist Church, where she was a former choir member and teacher.

She was married to her first husband, Albert B. Riddle, on Dec. 25, 1940. He predeceased her on March 3, 1988.

In addition, she was married to her second husband, D.T. Carson, on June 18, 1994. He predeceased her on May 7, 1996.

She is survived by one daughter, Janet Riddle Payne, of Danville; two sons, Richard Scearce Riddle and Michael G. Riddle, both of Danville; two sisters, Winnie S. Owen and Nona S. Hyler, both of Danville; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husbands, she was predeceased by one daughter, Margaret Riddle Hardy, in 1966.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Doug Barber and the Rev. Robert Vermillion officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, Va. 24541.

Pearlie Holley Gibson

DANVILLE, Va. - Pearlie Holley Gibson, 81, of 600 Main St., Apt. 809, died Monday, December 9, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born July 20, 1921, in Henry County, Va., she was the daughter of Jyles Henry Holley and Addie Keaton Holley.

She worked as a waitress in Martinsville, Va. a number of years prior to moving to Danville, where she worked at Dan River Mills.

She was of the Baptist faith.

She first married James Edward Cobbler, who predeceased her, and later married Percy Gibson, who also predeceased her.

She is survived by one daughter, Lucille Wilson Wyatt of Pelham, N.C. and one son, Larry Cobbler of Ashboro, N.C.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husbands, she was predeceased by one son, Willie Leon Cobbler; one sister, Betty Jane Cobbler; and two brothers, Kearfott Green Holley and Robert Lee Holley.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Johnny Dyer officiating. Interment will be in the Mayfield Baptist Church Cemetery on Route 700.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the residence of Lucille Wyatt, 1770 Nunnally Road, Pelham, N.C.

Mildred Graves Tannant Griffin

DANVILLE, Va. - Mildred Graves Tannant Griffin, 89, of 119 Belaire Drive, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002.

Born Dec. 29, 1912 in Chester, S.C., she was the daughter of Sidney Graves and Anna Lee Young Graves.

She had resided in Walterboro, S.C. and in Danville, Va. since 1997. She owned and operated Tennant Children Ware and Gift Shop before retiring. She was of the Baptist faith.

She married John B. Tennant, who predeceased her in 1974.

She later married James O. Griffin, who also predeceased her.

She is survived by one daughter, Martha T. Bratton of Danville; one son, Dr. John B. Tennant Jr. of Walterboro, S.C.; one sister, Helen Ann Graves of Mount Pleasant, SA; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Walterboro, S.C., with the Rev. Posey Belcher officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and 7-8 p.m. Thursday at Fred Parker Funeral Home, Walterboro, S.C. At other times they will be at the Danville residence until Wednesday morning.

Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Montine Pulliam

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Thomas Montine Pulliam, 85, 2238 Woodbluff Way, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002 in St.Joseph Hospital.

Born July 13, 1917, in Halifax County, Va., he was the son of Hershel Montine Pulliam and Grayce Dunn Pulliam.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in South Boston, where he was a member of the Lacy Bible Class and the Chancel Choir for 50 years.

He was a retired salesman.

He was married to Shirley Lee Brooks Pulliam, who predeceased him.

He is survived by two daughters, Terry P. Moore of Augusta, Ga. and Jerri P. Long of Roxboro, N.C.; one sister, Rebecca P.Clayton of Roxboro, N.C.; four grandsons; five step-grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is predeceased by one son, Robert Montine "Bob" Pulliam, and one brother, Gerald Pulliam.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, South Boston, with the Rev. Herbert Brown officiating.Interment will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 Tuesday at Brooks Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Brenda N. Pulliam, 2244 Wolf Trap Road, South Boston.

Brooks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lloyd Ray Saul

DANVILLE, Va. - Lloyd Ray Saul, 78, of 145 South Hunter St., died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center after five years of declining health and two days in the hospital.

Born Feb. 12, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of William B. Saul and Fannie Booher Saul.

He lived most of his life in the Danville area and was a self-employed carpenter. He had lived on South Hunter Street for 30 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was married to Dorothy May Saul.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Norma Jean Doss of Danville and Patricia Ann Pruitt of Mt. Cross Road; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. J. Richard Markham officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Dan River Post #1097.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence of Norma Jean Doss, 597 Elizabeth St. Ext.

Howard R. Scarboro

DANVILLE, Va. - Mr. Howard R. Scarboro, age 81, of 124 Cumberland Drive, died Monday, December 9, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for the past year.

Mr. Scarboro was born in the Schoolfield community, February 3, 1921, a son of the late Rufus Samuel Scarboro and Henrietta Odell Scarboro.

He was an active member of the Schoolfield United Methodist Church and was a graduate of Schoolfield High School. Mr. Scarboro was an active member and past Commander of the American Legion Post #1097 and member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a veteran of World War II, serving the United States Army Air Corps in the Pacific Theatre of operations. He had retired from Dan River, Inc. and also worked at CIT as a consultant after retiring from Dan River.

Mr. Scarboro was preceded in death by six brothers, Elgin Scarboro, Stuart Scarboro, Raymond Scarboro, Parker Scarboro, Claude Scarboro and James Scarboro.

Surviving are his wife of the home, Naomi Alderman Scarboro; one son, Howard L. Scarboro and his wife Beverly of Amherst, Va.; one grandson, Lee Scarboro and his wife Christine of Wilton, Iowa; three great-grandchildren, Amanda Scarboro, Phillip Scarboro and Regan Scarboro, all of Wilton, Iowa; one brother, Rufus O. Scarboro of Danville; and one sister, Mary Alice Ives of Rockledge, Florida.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002 at 2 p.m. from the graveside at Mountain View Cemetery by the Rev. Dr. Roy Creech. Full military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #1097.

The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002 from 7-8:30, and at other times will be at the residence.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Eva Scearce Bateman

BROSVILLE, Va. - Eva Scearce Bateman, 95, of 556 Willow Briar Lane died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at her residence.Born Nov. 10, 1906, she was the daughter of the late Whitt T. Scearce and Gracie Dishman Scearce.

She was married to Samuel Oakley Bateman, who predeceased her on May 1, 1986.

She had lived her entire life in the Brosville community and was a lifelong member of the Brosville United Methodist Church.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed working with the youth of her church.

Survivors include one daughter, JoAnne Bateman Adams of Brosville; two sons, Vincent Bateman of Rocky Mount and Bobby S. Bateman of Danville; one brother, Marion I. Scearce of Florida; and one sister, Mary J. Gentry of Wake Forest, N.C.; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sons, Vincent Harold Bateman and Sammy Bateman; four sisters, Delma Chrisman, Lula Rodden, Alma Hutchins and Annie Rice; two brothers, Emory Scearce and Jesse Scearce; and by one great-grandson.The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, with the Rev. Ed Roland and the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating.

Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family suggests that memorials be made to Hospice Support Services, P.O. Box 2713, Danville, VA, 24543; or to the Brosville United Methodist Church Building Fund, 12648 Martinsville Hwy., Danville, VA, 24541.

Martin Luther Hardy Jr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Martin Luther Hardy Jr., 66, of 136 Hayess Court, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born March 11, 1936, he was the son of Martin Luther Hardy Sr. and Eva Wilkinson Hardy, who predeceased him.

Hardy was a life-long resident of Danville. He was a graduate of Brosville High School and had been employed by Dan River Mills, Inc.; W. Henry Hardy Oil Co. and in 1966 began driving for Trailways Bus Co. He was associated with Davis and Hardy Christmas Trees for many years. He also was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church, a charter member of the Westover Fire Department and a member of Danville Aeromodelors.

Survivors include his wife, Junita W. Hardy, of the residence; two daughters, Freda H. Carter and Julia Puryear, both of Danville; two sons, Martin L. Hardy III and Timothy E. Hardy, both of Danville; a brother, Russell W. Hardy of Axton; and nine grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, with the Rev. William Blalock officating.

The family received friends 5-6:30 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel.

The family suggests that memorials be sent to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA, 24541, or to the charity of their choice.

Richard Wilborn Lowery

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Richard Wilborn Lowery, 79, of 621 Piney Branch Drive, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at the Virginia Beach Health Care Center.

Born July 18, 1923, in Halifax County, he was the son of Robert Stebbins Lowery and Dorothy Wilborn Lowery.

He was married to Carolyn Grimes Courtney, who predeceased him.

Mr. Lowery graduated from Virgilina High School and attended the University of Richmond. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942 and was assigned to the officer training program at Duke University, where he received his bachelor's degree.

He was honorably discharged in May 1946 and attended Washington & Lee University Law School. He received his law degree in 1948 and set up practice in South Boston where he also served as a municipal judge.

He was a 53-year member of the Virginia Bar Assocaition and practiced law in South Boston, San Antonio, Texas, New York, N.Y., Chicago, Ill. and Virginia Beach.

He is survived by two sons, David D. Lowery of Austin, Texas and Mark F. Lowery of Richmond; one daughter, Hollis Lowery Moore of The Woodlands, Texas; one step-daughter, Jimmie Rehbock of Orland Park, Ill.; one step-son, Clyde Hudson of Orlando, Fla. and one sister, Verlet Lowery Shelton and six grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Cecil Lowery.

A graveside funeral will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Halifax Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Brooks Funeral Home.

Willie Wilkins Mills

NATHALIE, Va. - Willie Wilkins Mills, 85, of 1122 Lenning Road, formerly of Keysville, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002 at the Woodview.

Born Sept. 26, 1917, she was the daughter of William Pollard Wilkins and Annie Tuck Wilkins.

She was married to Russell H. Mills and was a member of the Liberty United Church of Christ.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Nellie W. Walker and Elizabeth W. Tuck and two brothers, Charlie S. Wilkins and John P. Wilkins.

A graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Liberty United Church of Christ Cemetery with the Rev. Clyde Senger officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Monday at Powell Funeral Home.

Nettie Ferguson Petty

BLAIRS, Va. - Nettie Ferguson Petty, 85, of 181 Blairs Court, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at her residence.

Born Feb. 14, 1917 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Henry and Cornelius Carter Ferguson.

She was married to William Petty, who predeceased her.

Mrs. Petty was a housewife and member of Bibleway Worldwide Church.

She is survived by one son, Raymond Petty of Blairs; three daughters, Geraldine Dickerson of Danville, Estelle P. Woods of Blairs and Flossie Sankitts of Charleston, S.C.; 17 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at the L.H. Brooks and Bro. Funeral Chapel with Apostle L.G. Campbell Sr. conducting the service. Interment will be in the Highland Park Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Estelle Woods of 181 Blairs Court in Blairs.
