Ollie Swift Goodson

DANVILLE, Va. - Ollie Swift Goodson, 92, formerly of 807 Hughes St., died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born Aug. 20, 1910, in Elkin, N.C., she was the daughter of James Sexton Swift and Emily Lawrence Swift.

She lived most of her life in Danville and was a member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church. She retired from Dan River Mills in 1972. She had been a patient in Roman Eagle Memorial since February. She was the last member of her generation.

She was married to Garland Goodson, who predeceased her on April 25, 1976.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including nieces, Emily Dabbs Sheetz and Margie F. Terry; and nephew, David Dabbs, all of Danville.

The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Schoolfield Cemetery with the Rev. James McGhee and the Rev. Steve Dalton officiating. Interment will follow.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home and will at other times at the residence of her niece, Emily Dabbs Sheetz, 1409 Orphanage Road.

Lena Blake Gunn

DANVILLE, Va. - Lena Blake Gunn, 82, of 612 Mount Cross Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002 at her residence.

She was born May 30, 1920 in Lexington, N.C., a daughter of Randall H. Blake and Maude Deaton Blake, both deceased; and stepmother, Dorothy Dunn Blake, also deceased.

She was married to Andrew E. Gunn. She had been in declining health for three and one-half years.

She lived most of her life in Danville and was of the Baptist faith. She retired after 44 years of service with Dan River Mills as ticket clerk. She was a member of AARP and Dan River Retired Employees Club.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Ronnie Gunn Stanton of Danville and Patricia G. Rowland Young of Ringgold; a brother, Gloma Blake of Danville; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and step-mother, she is predeceased by two sisters, Jetty B. Matherly and Helen B. Snead.

The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. James S. Stowe officiating. Interment will follow.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Bernice McDowell Handy

DANVILLE, Va. - Bernice McDowell Handy, 89, of 231 South Ridge St. Apt. 118, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at Duke University Medical Center.

Born April 29, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Robert Jack McDowell and Gillie McCrickard McDowell.

She had lived in Danville since 1933 and worked in no. 4 Grey Inspection at Dan River Mills. She was a member of Afton Road Primitive Baptist Church and Dan River Retired Workers Club.

She was married to Frank Hardy, who predeceased her in 1979.

She is survived by a son, Frankie Handy of Mt. Airy, N.C.; two daughters, Jeanette Ricketts and JoAnn Herndon, both of Danville; a brother, Henry Herman McDowell; two sisters, Inez Blalock and Mozelle Campbell, both of Danville; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 4 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Chapel with Elder Danny Parker officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday and will at other times at the residence of JoAnn Herndon, 828 Corn Tassel Road, Tuscarora Farms.

Jettie Y. Mize Pugh

DANVILLE, Va. - Jettie Y. Mize Pugh, 71, of 1688 Buckhorn Drive, died Thursday, September 12, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born September 4, 1931, in Danville, she was the daughter of George Washington Yates Jr. and Lillian Olive Young Yates, both deceased.

Mrs. Pugh lived most of her life in Danville. She worked in Security at Danville Regional Medical Center. She was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church and VFW Auxiliary. She had been in declining health for the past five months.

She was first married to Walter T. Mize, who predeceased her. She later married Fred. B. Pugh, who survives.

She is survived by a son, Thomas Wayne Mize and wife, Nancy, of Danville; a sister, Ellen Yates Jackson of Ringgold; two grandchildren, Jonathan K. Mize and wife, Shannon and Candi Mize; a nephew, Michael S. Bray; and two nieces, Connie Y. Sharpe and Cynthia B. Roberson.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Arnie E. Yates and George W. Yates; a sister, June Yates Bray; and a nephew, Eugene Yates.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Gilmore Hundley and the Rev. Roy Newton officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home and will at other times at the residence.

Jack Vincent Thomson

DANVILLE, Va. - Jack Vincent Thomson, 80, of 110 Kitty Hawk Drive, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002 at his residence.

He was born on April 8, 1922 in Dover, Ohio, and was the son of Fred F. Thomson and Mary Ann Jones Thomson.

He was married for 58 years to Barbara Stoner Thomson, who survives.

He was a veteran of World War II having served in the Army Air Corp and he was a member of American Legion Post 325, where he was past commander and a member of the Honor Guard. He was also a member of the Elks and the Civitan.

He was a retired manager having worked for Kmart and later was associated with Commonwealth Home Health Care.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two sons, Jack Vincent Thomson II of Danville and Richard Stoner Thomson of Kentuck; one daughter, Cindy Thomson Richie of South Boston; one brother, Raymond Jones Thomson of Grand Blanc, Mich.; one sister, Jane Deloris Leuck of Charleston, S.C.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Townes Memorial Chapel by Rev. Linwood Daniel. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park with military graveside honors given by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post No. 325.

The family will receive friends on 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

The family suggests memorials be made to Hospice Support Services, P.O. Box 2713, Danville, Va. 24541.

Mark Anthony Barlow

DANVILLE, Va. - Mark Anthony Barlow, 41, of 755 Berryman Ave., died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002 at his residence.

Born Sept. 27, 1961, in Danville he was the son of Jeremiah and Willie Jackson Barlow.

He was married to Doris V. Barlow, who survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Minister Corey L. Torain of Greensboro, N.C.; and three brothers, Jeremiah Barlow Jr., Beverly Barlow and Decatur Barlow, all of Danville.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Hairston officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Alice Faye Farmer Barnette

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. - Alice Faye Farmer Barnette, 51, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002 after a lengthy illness.

Born in April of 1951, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Carl Earl Farmer, who predeceased her and Maggie Farmer, who survives.

She attended Caswell and Person County public schools and later moved to Maryland, where she resided.

In addition to her mother of Milton, N.C., she is survived by her husband, George Barnette of the residence; three children, Monica, Malalah Barnette and George Barnette III, all of Upper Marlboro; nine sisters, Joan Lilliy of High Point, N.C., Maggie Poteat, Hope Farmer, both of Burlington, N.C., Mary Vann of Fort Washington, Gerdean Farmer, Dynetta Farmer, both of Milton, N.C., Suzette Bailey of Danville, Va., Betty Jean Farmer and Veronica Wilkerson, both of Roxboro, N.C.; and four brothers, Earl Farmer of Spartanburg, S.C., John Farmer of Roxboro, N.C., David Farmer and William Farmer, both of Milton, N.C.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Semora, N.C. with the Rev. Alexander Jones officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

A viewing will be held 12-8 p.m. Friday at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel.

Rebecca 'Becky' Clark Cook

PELHAM, N.C. - Rebecca "Becky" Clark Cook, 62, of 4429 Old US Highway 29, died Wednesday, October 23, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born December 24, 1939, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Lewis Clark and Fannie Cantrell Clark.

Mrs. Cook lived most of her life in Pelham and was of the Baptist faith. She retired due to health from Winn Dixie in 1984 and had been in declining health for several years. She will be sadly missed by family and friends.

She was married to Richard Cook, who survives.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Debbie Harville of Pelham, N.C. and Susan Baker of Danville, Va.; a son-in-law, Donnie Baker of Danville, Va.; a sister, Shirley Bray of Danville, Va.; and two grandchildren, Jessica Harville and Jordan Baker.

The funeral will be held Saturday, October 26, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at the Swicegood Chapel with The Rev. Johnny Jones, The Rev. J. Richard Markham and The Rev. Mike Kent officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Friday, October 25, 2002 at 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times the family will be at the residence, 4429 Old US Highway 29, Pelham, N.C.

Donations may be made to Pelham Volunteer Fire Department, Pelham, North Carolina 27311.

Reva Davis Fallen

RINGGOLD, Va. - Reva Davis Fallen, 75, of 3112 Countryside Drive, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born April 6, 1927, she was the daughter of Jesse B. and Lonnie Ferrell Davis.

She was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

She was married to James A. Fallen, who survives.

In addition to her husband of Ringgold, she is survived by two daughters, Hersey F. Williams of Sutherlin and Lorraine Davis of Ringgold; a sister, Milissie D. Hood of Danville; four brothers, James Davis of Ringgold, Sammy Davis of Sutherlin, Willie Davis and Freddie Davis, both of Danville; and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Laurel Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. James Cabell officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Viewing will be held 2-6 p.m. Friday at L.H. Brooks and Brothers Funeral Home. The family will be at 1250 Old Richmond Road.

Ellen Virginia Gunn

DANVILLE, Va. - Ellen Virginia Gunn, 69, of 219 Gretna St., died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at her residence.

Born Aug. 19, 1933, in Danville, she was the daughter of Preston and Alice Perkins Epperson.

She was married to James Ellie Gunn Sr.

She is survived by two daughters, Rita Jo McLaughlin of Danville and Diane Gillispie of Johnson City, Tenn.; a son, Daryl Anthony Gunn of Atlanta, Ga.; three sisters, Alice Mae Hendricks of Knoxville, Tenn., Hallene Epperson of Danville and Barbara Davis of Pelham, N.C.; and three brothers, Lee Russell Epperson of Danville, Preston Epperson Jr. and Bernard Napoleon Epperson, both of Baltimore, Md.

The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Abundant Life World Outreach Church with the Rev. Bill Motley officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Louise Dixon Hallstrom

RINGGOLD, Va. - Louise Dixon Hallstrom, 79, of Chaney Store Road, formerly of 156 Forestdale Drive, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 10, 1923, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Walter Kent Dixon and Janie Whitt Dixon.

She lived in Chicago for many years before moving to Danville in the early 1980s. She served in the Armed Forces of the United States and she was of the Catholic faith.

She is survived by two nephews, Charles W. Barnett of Danville and W. Kent Cassada of Callands.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her former husband, Norm Hallstrom; and three sisters, Harriett D. Rice, Clara D. Merricks and Adelle Cassada.

At her request, her body has been donated to medical science.

Hazel Mae Hammock Jones

DANVILLE, Va. - Hazel Mae Hammock Jones, 77, formerly of 195 Hamlin Ave., died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born March 30, 1925, in Danville, she was the daughter of George W. Hammock and Mae Harvell Hammock.

She was a self-employed sitter for the elderly and she attended Central Boulevard Church of God.

She is survived by three sisters, Gloria Dalton of Ringgold, Nadine Richardson and Glenda Hyles, both of Danville.

She was predeceased by a brother, Alfred Smith Hammock.

The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. John Meadows and the Rev. Billy Hedrick officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
