Everett Hereford
DANVILLE, Va. - Everett Glen Hereford, 71, of 104 Carver Drive, died Sunday, April 21, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 26, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Frank Hereford and Maggie Hairston Hereford.
He was married to Helen M. Hereford, who survives. He worked for Dan River, Inc. for many years and was retired from Danville Regional Medical Center.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Ray Steven Hereford of Greensboro, N.C. and Barry Keith Hereford of Roanoke, and four daughters, Deborah Jennings, Kimberly Moss, Shauna Bradley and Tambra Malone, all of Danville.
The funeral will be held at
1 p.m. Thursday at Camp Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie Sherman officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Gladys Hodges
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Gladys Yancey Bracey Hodges died at her residence at The Colonnades in Charlottesville on April 21, 2002.
She was born on August 30, 1904 in South Hill, Va. to the late Robert Edward Yancey and Otelia Harris Yancey. She was the widow of Dr. Lucius H. Bracey and then of Y. Melvin Hodges, both of South Hill. Her brother, Robert Yancey, and six sisters, Willie Yancey, Olive Vassar, Grace Pleasants, Mary Allen, Louise Dugger, and Frances Poffenberger preceded her in death.
Mrs. Hodges was a graduate of Virginia Intermont College and Roanoke College. She was an accomplished musician and studied piano and voice with Quincy Cole in Richmond.
Mrs. Hodges is survived by one daughter, Jean B. Read of Danville; one son, Lucius H. Bracey Jr. and his wife Pamela of Charlottesville; three grandchildren, L. Gregory Read of Danville, Keturah Hart Bracey of San Francisco, and Daniel Lucius Edward Bracey of Charlottesville. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and special friends.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make contributions to the South Hill United Methodist Church, 105 Franklin Street, South Hill, Va. 22970 or to a charity of choice.
A memorial service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in South Hill at 2:00 on May 18, 2002. Farrar Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

TAMPA, Fla. - Louise Lawless, 93, of Tampa, died Monday, April 22, 2002 at University Village Nursing Home.
She was born in Caswell County, N.C.
Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn Mahan of Temple Terrace, JoAn Vaughan of Atherton, Calif. and Laura Berns of New York; one sister, Lillian Nethery of Caswell County, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Richie Moore
RINGGOLD, Va. - Richard "Richie" David Moore, 39, of 416 Cedar Road, died Sunday, April 14, 2002 at the residence of a friend on Major Court.
Born December 13, 1962 in Danville, he was a son of David Irvin Moore, who survives, and Ennis Crockett Moore, who predeceased him.
He had lived all of his life in Pittsylvania County and Danville and was employed by Allen's Pools & Repairs. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to his father of Ringgold, include one sister, Brenda Moore Warren of Providence, N.C.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Moore Family Cemetery on Cedar Road in the Mountain Hill community.

Elsie Pyrtle
DANVILLE, Va. - Elsie Brightwell Pyrtle, 88, of 178 Lamberth Drive, Danville, VA, died Monday, April 22, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born February 23, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, she was the daughter of Eugene C. Brightwell and Ruth Dix Brightwell, both deceased.
Mrs. Pyrtle lived most of her life in the Westover Hills community. She was of the Baptist faith. She had been in declining health and was a patient in the hospital for the past 8 days.
Survivors include daughter, Elaine Pyrtle Ritch and her husband, Randy Ritch of Danville, VA; daughter, Sandra Pyrtle Grant and her husband, E.C. Grant, Jr. of Rocky Mount, VA; daughter, Nancy Pyrtle Hill Revis of Danville, VA; daughter, Sheila Kay Pyrtle of the residence; son, Dennis C. Pyrtle and his wife, Gale Adams Pyrtle of Danville, VA; son, Roger Melvin Pyrtle of the residence; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 5 step-great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by one son, David W. Pyrtle; one sister, Velna Brightwell Gardner; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held Thursday, April 25, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by The Rev. William Blalock and The Rev. Larry Ferrell. Burial will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Lillie Robinette
DANVILLE, Va. - Lillie Mae Thompson Robinette, age 95, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002 at the Roman Eagle Memorial Home. She had been a resident there for the past three years.
She was born in Pittsylvania County, Va. November 19, 1906, a daughter of the late George Eddie Thompson and Ada Lee Thompson.
Mrs. Robinette was the oldest surviving member of The College Park Baptist Church. She was retired from Thalhimer's and Southern Department Store as a sales associate. She was married to the late Arthur F. Robinette who died September 10, 1973.
Surviving are two sons: A. F. "Bobby" Robinette and George L. Robinette, both of Danville. Six grandchildren: Susan R. Owen, Steve Robinette, Sherry R. Howard, Cynthia "Cindy" R. Moshenek, Sarah Lee R. Michaels and Ruth Lee R. Spivey. Thelve great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Mrs. Robinette was predeceased by four brothers and five sisters.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 25, 2002 at 11 a.m. from the graveside at Highland Burial Park by the Reverend James Hewitt.

Mark Shelton
DANVILLE, Va. - Mark Anthony Shelton, 36, of 100 Wendell Court, died Friday, April 19, 2002, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, N.C., following several months of declining health.
Born Aug. 1, 1965, in Danville, he was a son of James "Jimmy" Lester Shelton and Linda Hall Shelton, who survive.
He worked as a construction worker and plumber before his decline in health. He was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church and had resided in Greensboro, N.C. for the past three years. He grew up in Danville and enjoyed speedskating and roller hockey at the old Park View Skating Rink and Skatetown.
Survivors, in addition to his parents of the residence, include one daughter, Brittany Danielle Shelton of Sutherlin; one sister, Tammy Shelton Chaney of Danville; maternal grandparents, Kathleen Quick of Danville and Wallace B. Hall of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and paternal grandmother, Ethel Elizabeth Shelton of Danville.
He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, James L. Shelton Sr.
The memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Rivermont Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack Waddell officiating.

Mayo Worsley Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Mayo Mills Worsley Jr., 78, of Riverside Health Care Center, died Monday, April 22, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 2, 1923, he was a son of Mayo Mills Worsley Sr. and Lillian Waid Worsley.
He lived most of his life in Danville and was engaged in real estate. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a member of the German Club and was of the Episcopal faith.
Survivors include three sons, Mayo Mills Worsley III of Danville, Joel P. Worsley of South Boston and Carter W. Worsley of Chatham, and two grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, John D. Worsley.
The memorial service will be private.

Floyd Allen Barber
LORIS, S.C. - Floyd Allen Barber, 60, of 3705 Mishoe St., died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at his residence. He had been disabled since 1994.
Born April 2, 1942, in Danville, Va., he was the son of Ramey Barber and Thelma Clifton Beame.
He lived most of his life in Danville prior to moving to South Carolina in 1995. He was a member of First Church of the Brethen.
He is survived by two aunts, Irene Rhodes and Betty Sluss, both of Danville, Va.
The memorial will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Richard Berkley officiating. Interment will be private.

Wiltshire Monroe Cardwell
KEELING, Va. - Wiltshire Monroe Cardwell, age 94, of 17420 Old Richmond Road, Keeling, Va., passed away at Danville Regional Medical Center on Jan. 14, 2003, after declining health for four years and being a patient four days in the hospital.
Mr. Cardwell was born in Pittsylvania County on Sept. 19, 1908. He was the son of the late Carrie Lillie Cruse Cardwell and Frank Flippen Cardwell. Mr. Cardwell was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Alma Lucille Ingram Cardwell, in February 2000. He is the last surviving member of his immediate siblings. He was predeceased by two brothers, Frank F. Cardwell, Edward T. Cardwell; two sisters, Elizabeth C. Barker, Helen C. Ferguson and one adopted brother, Carter Adams.
As a young person, Mr. Cardwell graduated from Dan River High School in 1927 and at that time it was only necessary for graduates to complete 11 grades. He was an avid sports player and participated in team sports basketball and baseball. He was the team captain for the 1926 baseball team that won a county trophy.
As a young adult, Mr. Cardwell owned and drove a school bus for Pittsylvania County and Dan River High School. Later he owned his own construction company, Cardwell Construction Company, and worked as a carpenter to build homes for families in North Carolina and Virginia. His love of farming and the land made him a successful tobacco farmer for over 30 years. He was a member of Kentuck Presbyterian Church for over 45 years, where he had served as Deacon and Elder. He was a member of the Pittsylvania Farm Bureau.
He is survived by one son, Carroll Monroe Cardwell and daughter-in-law, Claudia Cardwell, of Dinwiddle, Va. and one daughter, Ann Marie Cardwell Roth and son-in-law, Frederick J. Roth III, of Clemmons, N.C. Mr. Cardwell has two granddaughters, Tracey Cardwell Roberts and her husband, Jay Roberts, of Charlottesville, Va. and Tiffany Cardwell Joseph and her husband, Jermeny Joseph, of Easton, Md.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Kentuck Presbyterian Church. Reverend David Smith, Pastor, will be conducting the service. Interment will follow at the family cemetery on the Keeling Farm residence.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church from 1-2 p.m. At other times the family will receive at the residence.

Nathan Brian Howard Collins
CHATHAM, Va. - Nathan Brian Howard Collins, 2, of 12960 Franklin Turnpike, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at his residence after injuries from a house fire.
Born May 4, 2000, in Danville, he was the son of Brian Ray Collins and Nancy Suzanne Talbert Collins.
In addition to his parents of the residence, he is survived by a sister, Briana Leigh Collins, also of the residence; paternal grandparents, Gloria Adkins and James Cox; maternal grandparents, Linda Lee Owen and Kevin D. Talbert; maternal great-grandparents, Howard and Margaret Eubanks; paternal great-grandfather, Buddy Cox; paternal great-great-grandmother, Flossa Strader Hook and a paternal step grandfather, Jr. Adkins, all of Danville.
He was predeceased by a great-grandmother, Gloria Cox and a great-great-grandfather, Albert Strader.
The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Schoolfield Cemetery with the Rev. Larry Pittman officiating.

Carl Thornton Conner
AMHERST, Va. - Carl Thornton Conner, 78, of 187 Wahoo Way, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born Aug. 9, 1924, in Halifax County, he was the son of Lemuel Conner and Ruby Wilborn Conner.
He was a veteran of World War II and received the Purple Heart.
He was married to Betty Jane Cox Conner, who predeceased him.
He is survived by two daughters, Carlene Conner-Koeck of Colorado Springs, CO and Bonnie Conner-Gray of Richmond, Va.; one son, Tim Conner of Amherst; one grandchild; three sisters, Marion Gordon of Alton, Artie Swickert of Richmond and Gene Pool of Goldsboro, N.C.; and one brother, Glenn Conner of Biloxi, Miss.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. H. V. Conner officiating. Interment will be in the Black Walnut Baptist Church Cemetery.

Jean-Pierre Demars
DANVILLE, Va. - Jean-Pierre Demars, M.D., died at home on Thursday, January 16, 2003 after a short illness.
He was born near Brussels, Belgium, where he was educated for the first 16 years of his life. The family moved to the Congo where he finished high school, after which he began studying medicine at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He became an MD and met his wife, Elaine, in 1958, worked in South Africa for the next two years, then went to England to specialize in psychiatry. They married in 1962, had two children in England, then immigrated to Virginia.
He received further training in psychiatry at the University of Virginia and became a faculty member for three years. In 1971 he and his family moved to the Washington area where another child was born and Dr. Demars was in private practice for the next 22 years. In 1993, he and his wife moved to Danville, where he assumed the position of Medical Director at Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute until his retirement in August 2002.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine, son Marc of San Diego, daughter Karash and her husband Joe Payne and four children of Bethesda, Maryland, and Cheska and her husband David Levy, also of Bethesda, Maryland, three sisters, Josette Candelon of Milan, Italy, Jacqueline Demars of Washington, D.C. and Michelle Demars of Les Issambres, France.
A celebration of Dr. Demars' life will be held Monday, January 20, 2003 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home.
