Robert Bernard Hughes Jr.
BRATTLEBORO, Vt. - Robert Bernard Hughes Jr., 84, of Oak Grove Street, died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 30, 1918, in Gilliam, W.Va., he was the son of Robert Bernard Hughes Sr. and Melene Coen Hughes.
He was a retired insurance salesman with South Boston Insurance Agency. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he was a former Sunday school teacher for the Lacy Bible Class. He was a former member of the South Boston Lions Club and former board member of the Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Plantation.
He was married to Ruth Hambrick Hughes, who predeceased him.
He is survived by a son, Robert B. Hughes III of Lake Wylie, S.C.; a daughter, Anne Hughes Marshall of Williamsville; two brothers, Gerald L. Hughes of Bluefield, W.Va. and James C. Hughes of Abington, Va.; and two grandsons.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a sister, Mary H. Nunn.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, South Boston, Va., with the Rev. Ralph Harrell officiating. Interment will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Louis Lee Milam
DANVILLE, Va. - Louis Lee Milam, 83, of 450 Piney Forest Road, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at Piney Forest Health Care Center after six months of declining health.
Born Oct. 4, 1919, in Halifax County, he was the son of Ruth Pearl Milam Grinstead.
He had lived his entire life in the Danville area and prior to his retirement, worked as an agent for Southland Life Insurance Company. He was a member of North Main Baptist Church.
He was a World War II army veteran, serving with Company F of the 116th Infantry in Normandy, France, the Rhineland and Western Europe. He received a Purple Heart, the American Defense Service Medal and the European/African/Middle East Service Medal.
He was married to Isabelle Williams Milam, who predeceased him on June 6, 2000.
He is survived by several cousins, including John Harvey Moore of Ringgold and June Moore Hill of Danville.
The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Jack Noble officiating. Interment will follow with military honors by American Legion Post 1097.

Georgia C. Mize
ACCIDENT, Md. - Georgia C. Mize, 82, formerly of 204 Haynesworth Drive, Danville, Va., died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at Cherry Hill Assisted Living Home.
Born May 27, 1920, in Mayodan, N.C., she was the daughter of Joe Richard Gentry and Hallie C. Crotts.
She lived and worked in northern Virginia for 42 years, then returned to the Danville area in August 1984. She had resided in Maryland for the past four years. She worked for Civil Service with the U.S. Postal System, was a member of Vandola Baptist Church, the Senior Citizens Club and AARP.
She was married to Russell James Mize Sr., who predeceased her April 17, 1987.
She is survived by a son, Russell James Mize Jr. of Leesburg, Va.; two daughters, Hallie M. Snyder of Oakland, Md. and Rebecca M. Sasser of Callands, Va.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Leroy Clack and the Rev. John Jones officiating. Interment will be in the Moss Family Cemetery, Danville.

Cleo E. Yeatts
GRETNA, Va. - Cleo Edward Yeatts, 71, of 613 Sandy Road, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at his residence.
Born March 27, 1931, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Charlie and Minnie Yeatts.
He was a self-employed contractor, a member of West End Church of Christ and a former member of the Odd Fellows Lodge.
He is survived by three sons, Allen Yeatts, Terry Yeatts and Timmy Yeatts; two daughters, Susan Reynolds and Donna Yeatts, all of Gretna; eight grandchildren; and six step grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn Haskins Yeatts.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Colbert-Moran Chapel with the Rev. J.D. Hunt III officiating. Interment will follow in the Haskins Family Cemetery, Penhook.

Pete Christianson
PELHAM, N.C. - Nolan F. "Pete" Christianson departed this life on November 13, 2002 after a courageous battle with cancer and Alzheimer's.
He was born November 8, 1911 in Danville, Va., to Lottie Moxley Christianson and Harry Christianson.
He was married on March 26, 1941, to Margaret Stansbury Christianson, who survives of the home. Also surviving is one son-in-law, Jesse Lowe; three grandchildren, Margaret "Mim" Craig, Russell Lee Roach Jr. and Ronald W. Roach; five great-grandchildren, all live in the Pelham area of North Carolina; two sisters, Evelyn C. Holland of Henderson, N.C. and Pearl C. Fuller of Atlanta, Ga.
He was predeceased by one child, Marie Daniel Lowe; two brothers, Walter E. Christianson and Harry Christianson; three sisters, Mary C. Browder, Violet C. Alverson and Ruth C. Knowles.
He was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. He was a W.W. II veteran having served in the 69th Infantry Division in Germany.
Mr. Christianson owned and operated "Pete Christianson Home Improvement Business."
A graveside service will be held at Mountain View Cemetery by the Rev. Jonathan L. Bennett on Friday, November 15, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. Full military honors will be given by American Legion Post #1097.

Willie J. Clark
RINGGOLD, Va. - Willie J. Clark, 52, of 2804 Mt. Zion Circle, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
Born April 24, 1950, in Danville, he was the son of Harry W. Clark, who predeceased him and Odaris Stephens Clark, who survives.
He had retired from Goodyear Rubber and Tire Company.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two sons, Kelly Clark and Kevin Clark, both of Ringgold; and two sisters, Linda Gayle Clark of Ringgold and Odessa Finney of Richmond.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Anthony Ferebee officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Betty Lucille Neal Dalton
DANVILLE, Va. - Betty Lucille Neal Dalton, 96, formerly of 1708 North Main St., died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after two weeks of declining health. She had been at Roman Eagle for four and one half years.
Born Aug. 10, 1906, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Elijah Neal and Nannie King Neal.
Mrs. Dalton lived her entire life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County areas. She was of the Baptist faith and was a homemaker. She was the last surviving member of her immediate generation.
She married Reuben Alfonza Dalton in April 21, 1922. He predeceased her Feb. 5, 1983.
She is survived by a son, Ed Dalton and wife, Shirley Dalton of Blairs; six daughters, Anna D. Cook of Danville, Dorothy D. Newman and husband, Otto Newman of Danville, Barbara D. Shelton and husband, O.T. Shelton of Chatham, Marie D. Carter of Danville, Shirley D. Carter and husband, Ernest Carter of Danville and Rachel D. Dowdy and husband, A.S. Dowdy of Danville; 21 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, B.D. Dalton; a daughter, Gladys C. Pugh; two sisters, Isabel Adkins and Vergie Pierce; and a brother, Marvin Neal.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Jonathan Reed and the Rev. Avery Marshall officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Margaret Reeder Donaldson
DANVILLE, Va. - Margaret Bayard Reeder Donaldson, daughter of Susan Fitzgerald Bourden Reeder and Andrew Horatio Reeder and preceded in death by her husband, Richard Byrd Donaldson, passed away on November 13, 2002, at the age of 75.
Survivors are her sons, Richard Byrd Donaldson Jr. and wife, Sandy of Newport News, James Andrew Donaldson and wife, Virginia of Richmond, Douglas Bayard Donaldson and wife, Kathleen of Louisville, Ky. and daughter, Margaret Donaldson Hood and Husband, Jon of Richmond, and nine grandchildren.
Peggy was a native of Big Stone Gap, resident of Danville, and a graduate of Radford College. She taught school and was active in many civic organizations, some of which include: Boy Scouts; Garden Club; The Jr. Wednesday Club; Wednesday Club; Church Women and was Budget Box co-chair at the Church of the Epiphany; State Board of Colonial Dames, Thomas Graves Chapter; the Eppes Society; board member and genealogist chairman of the Daughters of the American Revolution; Duplicate Bridge Association and the Jamestown Society. She assisted teaching the blind and tutored math students for many years. Peggy was a state legislative aide for Ken Calvert representing Danville, Va. and served on the fund raising committee for the Republican Party in Danville.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2002, at 3:00 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany by Father James Mathieson, 115 Jefferson Street.

Betty Ann Fitzgerald
DANVILLE, Va. - Betty Ann Fitzgerald, 65, of 608 North Pointe Lane, Apt. 104, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born March 3, 1937, in Danville, she was the daughter of the late Christopher Columbus Crosby and the late Betty Ann Watkins Crosby.
She was married to Conwell Fitzgerald, who preceded her in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Rentha Henderson and Cathy Holman, both of Danville; three sons, Anthony Fitzgerald of Danville; Carl Fitzgerald of Charlottesville and Jerome Fitzgerald of Beavers, W.Va.
The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Silver Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Booker George officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

Linwood 'Pete' Perkins
HALIFAX, Va. - Linwood Landrum "Pete" Perkins, 76, of 3143 Mountain Rd., died Nov. 13, 2002, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
Born in Halifax County on Sept. 20, 1926, he was the son of Thomas Arthur Perkins and Lillie Landrum Perkins.
He married Mabel Joyce Perkins and was a member of Union United Methodist Church.
Prior to retirement, Perkins was a supervisor with Burlington Industries. He was a member of the Halifax Sportsman's Club, American Legion Post 8 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8243. During World War II, Perkins served in the 784th Military Police Battalion in the Phillipines. He was also an avid gardener and hunter.
Perkins is survived by his wife, Mabel of Halifax; one daughter, Donna Smith of Scottsburg; three brothers, Thomas Perkins and Woodrow Perkins, both of Nathalie, and Harvey Perkins of Halifax; one sister, Lillie Mae Keats of South Boston; and two grandsons.
He was predeceased by his parents; one brother, Douglas Perkins; one sister, Mattie Perkins; and a number of half brothers and half sisters.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel in South Boston with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Burial will take place in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Born May 15, 1937, in Danville, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Hartridge and Margaret Ferrell Hartridge.
She was employed by Richmond Cedar Works for many years.
She is survived by her husband, Walter Richardson; one daughter, Wanda Gail White of Providence, N.C.; one sister, Bessie Walters of Danville; and one brother, Clifton Hartridge of Danville.

Born March 7, 1959, in Danville,Va., she was the daughter of Clarence Wilson and Willie Mae Wilson Farmer.
In addition to her father of New York and her mother of Milton, she is survived by five sisters, Sheila Hairston and Wanda Standfield, both of Danville, Va.; Lemettris Johnson and Rita Connally, both of Milton; Jacqueline Smith of Raleigh; and one brother, John Wilson of Japan.
