RUFFIN, N.C. - Jean Meeks Gillie, 62, of 658 Perkinson Road, Ruffin, N.C. went to be with the Lord Saturday, May 11, 2002 at Moses Cone Hospital. Service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Overlook Cemetery.
Mrs. Gillie was born in Henry County and had worked for Southern National Bank and Vanier Graphic. She is survived by husband Ralph Gillie, of the home; Daughter, Sarita G. Gusler and husband David of Danville, Va.; Son, R. Wayne Gillie and wife Dee of Eden, N.C.; Grandchildren, Daniel Gusler, Ryan Gusler, Erin Gusler, Emily Gillie and Sarah Gillie; Brothers, Arnold Meeks of Ridgeway, Va., Charles Meeks of Ridgeway, Va. and Paul Barnes of San Diego, Ca.
Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday evening at Fair Funeral Home and at other times at the home of the son, Wayne Gillie, 270 Ginny Road, Eden, N.C.

Elsie Harper
DANVILLE, Va. - Elsie Pollok Harper, 94, died Saturday, May 11, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Oct. 10, 1907, in Whitmell, Va., she was a daughter of Ferdinand Lanier Pollok and Blanche Collins Pollok.
She was married to Robert Edward Lee Harper, who died in 1966.
She attended Longwood College and she taught school in Pittsylvania County for several years.
She lived most of her life in the Pleasant Gap community where she was a homemaker. A long-time active member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church, she taught the young girls' Sunday school class, and she was active in the Women's Missionary Union.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two sons, Robert Edward Harper and John Hutchings Harper; one sister, Sally Kate Pollok, and seven brothers, William Pollok, Irving Pollok, Ferd Pollok, George Pollok Sr, Collins Pollok, James Pollok and Robert Pollok.
Survivors include one daughter, Linda Harper Cox, and a son-in-law, Carlton H. Cox of Danville; two brothers, Harold Pollok and Harry Pollok, both of Whitmell; three sisters, Virginia Clarke of Charlottesville, Va., Agnes Mitchell of Danville and Anne Hemming of Lexington, Va.; two grandchildren, Catherine Cox Decker, and her husband, Michael, of Ballston Spa, New York, and Harper Cox Morrow, and her husband, Bruff, of Houston, Texas; and one great-grandson, Carlton Andrew Decker of Ballston Spa, New York.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday from Mount Hermon Baptist Church by the Rev. Don Davidson. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family received friends 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home. At other times, the family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Linda Cox, 233 Mowbray Arch.

Cledis Pruitt
DANVILLE, Va. - Cledis Mabry Pruitt, 84, formerly of 860 Franklin Turnpike, died Sunday morning, May 12, 2002 at Roman Eagle Memorial Nursing Home.
Born October 15, 1917 in Carroll County, Va., she was a daughter of Reuben Thornton Mabry and Eva Mae Holliday Mabry, who both predeceased her.
She was married February 23, 1935 to Edward Richard Pruitt, who predeceased her on August 23, 1976. She worked for Dan River Inc. until retirement. She was a member of First Pentacostal Holiness Church, where she was a former Sunday School teacher for the Adult Class, a member of the Womens Auxiliary, and a member of the Choir.
Survivors include one son, Edward Duane Pruitt of Danville, Va.; one sister, Gertrude Scearce of Danville, Va.; one grandson, Keith Duane Pruitt, and his wife Cheryl Pruitt, both of Danville; one great-granddaughter, Candace Pruitt of Danville, Va.; and a very special member of the family, Robert T. Franklin of Danville, Va.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by five brothers and five sisters.
The graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2002 at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Joe Beck and the Rev. James Ward officiating.
The family will receive friends at 348 Major Court.

Edward Shelton
CHATHAM, Va. - Edward Washington Shelton, 81, of 681 Irish Road, died Sunday, May 12, 2002 at the residence.
Born October 19, 1920 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Henry Clay Shelton and Eulalia Terry Shelton.
He was married to Clara Pyron Shelton, who survives. He was a member of Concord United Methodist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one son, Vincent R. Shelton of Richmond; one sister, Ida S. Towler of Danville; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one son, Dwyne Shelton, and one brother, Hugh M. Shelton.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hillcrest Burial Park with the Rev. Darrell Campbell officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Scott Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Dakota Tarpley
CALLANDS, Va. - Mrs. Dakota Tarpley, age 80, of 556 Wyatt Farm Road, Callands, Va., died Friday, May 10, 2002 at the Piney Forest Health Care Center in Danville, Va. Born in Pittsylvania County September 6, 1921. She was a daughter of the late Lloyd Thomas Price and the late Lee Devins Price. She was married to William Travis Tarpley who survives. She was a homemaker and a member of the Burning Bush Holiness Church.
She was preceded in death by a son, William Jr. Tarpley and one sister, Gracie Downing.
In addition to her husband, William Travis Tarpley of the residence, she is survived by one daughter, Rosena Scott of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; one brother, Roy Price of Trenton, New Jersey; one grandson, McCleary Scott Jr. of Atlanta, Ga. and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, May 15, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. from the chapel of Miller Funeral Home by Bishop Edward L. Crews with interment in the Floral Hills Memorial Garden. The family is at the residence.

DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Alvin Walters, 42, of 254 Camp Grove Place, died Friday, May 10, 2002 at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 12, 1960 in Danville, he was a son of John Walters and Bessie Hogue Walters, who both survive.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include one sister, Wanda Hairston of Danville; and one brother, Earl Walters of Danville.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Willie Sherman officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park Cemetery.

Donald George Cornelius
SEMORA, N.C. - Donald George Cornelius, 77, of 13321 N.C. Hwy. 119 North, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002, at Person Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.
Born in Steuben County, N.Y., he was the son of Lloyd Wahl and Lillian Fanton Cornelius.
He was married to Dorothy Hensley Cornelius who survives. He attended Alfred Almond High School and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He retired from Centel Telephone after 20 years of service.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by three sons, Lloyd Cornelius of Honea Path, S.C., Mark Cornelius of Semora, and Ricky Cornelius of Leasburg; one daughter, Donna C. Bowling of Rougemont; one brother, Ben Cornelius of Wellsville, N.Y.; one sister, Charlotte Davis of LaBelle, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, Francis Cornelius; and one sister, Eleanor C. Hepworth.
The graveside funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Semora Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Joe Grubbs officiating.

DANVILLE, Va. - Clara Day Janney McDevitt, 89, of 4011 Westover Drive Box 14, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at her daughter's residence.
Born Sept. 6, 1912, in Floyd County, she was the daughter of Laudy T. Janney and Lurinda Hollins Janney.
She lived her life in Philadelphia and New Jersey and for the past 16 years resided in Danville. She was a member of Westover Hills United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. Prior to her retirement, she was employed in the restaurant business for several years.
She is survived by one daughter, Jacqueline Gerace of Philadelphia, Pa.; one sister, Shannie J. Hawkins of Kingsport, Tenn.; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by one sister, Beulah J. Hermanson.
The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens with Rev. Charles Comer officiating. Interment will follow.

MILTON, N.C. - Lloyd Harvey Vernon, 69, of 8457 N.C. Hwy. 62 North, Milton, N.C. died Sunday, August 11, 2002, at Hospice House of Alamance, Burlington, N.C. following a lengthy illness.
He was born March 31, 1933, in Caswell County, North Carolina, the son of Clay Hester Vernon, Sr. and Rebecca Bass Vernon.
He was owner of L. H. Vernon Company, Inc. from which he was retired. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean war. He was of the Methodist faith.
He was predeceased by his parents; a son, Ronald Bass Vernon; and brothers, Walter Vernon, Eldridge Vernon, Clay Vernon and Robert Vernon.
Survivors include three daughters, Dr. Rebecca Vernon Pugh and husband, Richard of High Point, N.C., Penelope Vernon Cooper and husband, Sam of Wytheville, Va. and Dr. Nancey Vernon Bradsher and husband, Preston of Milton, N.C.; one brother, Marshall Bryd Vernon of Brunswick, Ga.; and seven grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, August 14, at New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery, at 1 p.m. by Vernon Massingill.

Jud Dexter Buchanan Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Jud Dexter Buchanan Sr., 81, formerly of Georgetown, S.C., died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center after three years of declining health and two years in the Brian Center in Yanceyville, N.C.
Born March 8, 1921, in Kings Mountain, N.C., he was the son of Coy Lee Buchanan and Lona Gammon Bible Buchanan.
He lived his life in Georgetown, S.C. where he was self-employed as a seafood wholesaler. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and was a 32nd degree mason. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II. He was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by three sons, Jud Dexter Buchanan Jr. of Chatham, Steven N. Buchanan of Stuarts Draft and Dennis J. Buchanan of Georgetown, S.C.; a daughter, Marie B. Vaughn of Danville; two half brothers, Otis Buchanan of Lexington, N.C. and Cecil Buchanan of Greensboro, N.C.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Carl Douglas Buchanan and a brother, Herbert Nelson Buchanan.
The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with the Rev. Wayne Prillaman officiating and military rites by American Legion Post 1097.

Helen Moss Clifton
FAIRFAX, Va. - Helen Moss Clifton, 74, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, in Fairfax Hospital.
Born Dec. 20, 1928, in Danville, she was a daughter of Olive and Oscar Moss.
She had lived most of her life in Fairfax and was a teacher for Arlington County Schools for 12 years. She was a graduate of Brosville High School in Pittsylvania County, and a graduate of Radford College.
She married Henry Grant Clifton on March 23, 1951.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Lisa Clifton Hailer of Sherborn, Mass. and Jan Clifton Abart of Manassas; a sister, Oneida Moss Walters of Coral Gables, Fla.; two brothers, Richard D. Moss and Marvin L. Moss, both of Danville; and two grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a brother, Norman R. Moss, of Danville.
A memorial will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Alban's Episcopal Church.

DANVILLE, Va. - Adrian Forrest Ferguson Sr., 48, of 2172 Old Richmond Road, died Dec. 30, 2002, at his residence.
Born Aug. 28, 1954, in Danville, he was the son of Lillian G. Ferguson, who predeceased him and George J. Ferguson, who survives.
He recently became a member of Bibleway World Wide Cathedral. He was employed by Mason Nite Industries.
He was married to Shirley Ann Venable Ferguson, who survives.
In addition to his father and wife, he is survived by a daughter, Chaquita D. Reed of Danville; two sons, Adrian Forrest Ferguson Jr. of Salisbury, N.C. and Erick Duane Ferguson of Danville and two sisters, Brenda Diane Ferguson of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Trudie Lorraine Logan of Bedford, Texas. He is also survived by other children and grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Johnson officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Beavers Funeral Home.

SCOTTSBURG, Va. - John Massey "Johnny" Francis Jr., 67, of 1039 Hundley Road, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002 at his home.
Born Feb. 1, 1935, in Halifax County, he was the son of John Massey Francis Sr. and Minnie Owen Francis.
He was a member of The Scottsburg United Methodist Church and was President of the Scottsburg Volunteer Fire Department.
He was married to Joyce Priest Francis.
In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by two sons, John Massey Francis III of Bend, OR and Gary Lee Francis of Scottsburg; one stepson, C. David Throckmorton of Midlothian, VA; two stepdaughters, Kimberley T. Jansen of Tampa, FL and Janet T. Owen of Dothan, AL; three sisters, Agnes F. Grundman of Jacksonville, FL, Lucille F. Thompson of Virgilina and Madeline F. Moorefield of Scottsburg; two brothers, Owen Francis of Scottsburg and Thomas A. Francis of Dinwiddie, VA; and seven step-grandchildren.
