SUTHERLIN, Va. - Mary Irene Davis Goode, 76, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002 at the Rex Healthcare Center in Raleigh, NC.
Born Sep. 9, 1926, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of John Willie Davis Sr. and Mary Scott Davis.
She was a member of the White Oak Grove Baptist Church. She was a retired Halifax County schoolteacher.
She was married to Ruben H. Goode Jr., who predeceased her.
She is survived by two daughters, Velma Williams and Iris Best and one son, Gerald Goode, all of Raleigh, NC; one sister, Lillie Fallen of Sutherlin; one brother, John Willie Davis Jr. of Stanford, CT; and nine grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Friday at the White Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Melvin Fuller officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Mary Wimbish, 1071 Kerns Mill Road, Sutherlin.

Vance Lee Hudson
DANVILLE, Va. - Vance Lee Hudson, 85, of 331 Norwood Drive, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002 at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville after being in declining health for several weeks.
Born Jan. 28, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Edward Hudson and Louvanna Collins Hudson.
He had lived in the Danville area for the last 20 years and, prior to his retirement, worked for Associated Transport. He was a member of the Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church.
He was a World War II Army veteran.
He was married to Irene Carter Hudson, who predeceased him.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by three brothers, Clyde F. Hudson, Elwood S. Hudson and Wilton B. Hudson and one sister, Edna Ruth Hudson.
He is survived by one daughter, Vangela Spears of Clearwater, FL; one grandson and four granddaughters.
The graveside service was 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland BurialPark with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating.

Marie Marshall
DANVILLE, Va. - Bessie Marie Marshall, 59, of 141 Joplin Street, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center after being in declining health for several years and in the hospital for one day.
Born Oct. 22, 1943, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Cleveland Slate and Dora McGregor Slate, who survives.
She had lived all her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. She had worked for several years with Dan River Inc. as a spinner until her retirement due to health reasons. She was of the Christian faith.
She married Lloyd James Marshall on Aug. 5, 1960.
In addition to her husband, of the residence, and mother, of Chatham, she is survived by one daughter, Lisa M. Davis of Danville; two sons, Danny J. Marshall and Anthony Todd Marshall, both of Danville; two brothers, David Slate of Salisbury, MD and Cleve Slate Jr. of Chatham; and seven grandchildren.
The graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday in Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Freddy Vicks officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel. At other times they will be at the residence of her daughter, Lisa M. Davis, 462 Williamson Road.

Gladys Rice Pugh
LECANTO, Fla. - Gladys Rice Pugh, 88, of 2730 West Marc-Knighton Court, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at Surrey Place Convalescent Home.
Born Feb. 17, 1914, in Carter County, Tenn., she was the daughter of Gabriel Rice and Dossie Bowen Rice.
She was of the Baptist faith. She lived most of her life in California and for the past 15 years, she lived in Florida. She retired as an assembly specialist from North American Aircraft Company where she worked on computer boards for the space shuttle program.
She was married to Harry Raymond Pugh, who predeceased her Nov. 22, 1998.
She is survived by a daughter, Naomi Rose of Winchester, Calif.; a son, Stanley R. Pugh of Conroe, Texas; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by four brothers and six sisters.
The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens, Danville, Va., with the Rev. Dr. Charles B. Scearce officiating.

Dillard Waller
BLAIRS, Va. - Dillard Waller, 59, of 5208 Spring Garden Road, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002 in Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born May 29, 1943, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Will and Gladys Fitzgerald Waller.
He was a member of the Shockoe Baptist Church and was a retired employee of the Ottenberg Bakery in Washington, DC.
He is survived by six sisters, Altheria Hightower, of the residence, Doris Womack, Ella Lane and Faye Waller, all of Washington, DC and Shirley Logan and Ernestine Edwards, both of Java; three brothers, Willie Waller and Edward Waller, both of Washington, DC and Robert Waller of Oxon Hill, MD.
The funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Shockoe Baptist Church with the Rev. Kelvin McNeil officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Allie Neil Allen
DANVILLE, Va. - Allie Neil Allen, 87, of 431 Lansbury Drive, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 16, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Alonza Allen and Sallie Farthing Allen, who are both deceased.
He was a member of North Danville Church of Christ. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Woodmen of the World Camp 15. He was employed as a security guard for Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
He worked for Dan River, Inc. in maintenance for 30 years. He married Mary Owen Kelly Allen, who survives, on April 16, 1965.
He is survived by three stepsons, Clark Kelly of Danville, Hugh "Doc" Kelly of Whitmell and Larry Kelly of Durham, N.C.; one stepdaughter, June Kelly Calloway of Eden, N.C.; one brother, William Allen of Danville; two grandsons, Neil Calloway of Lenoir, N.C. and Matthew Kelly of Durham, N.C.; two granddaughters, Edwina Huffman of Lenoir, N.C. and Rebecca Kelly of Durham, N.C.; one sister-in-law, Mildred Allen of Chatham; and four great-grandchildren.

Belvie Calvin Gammon
DANVILLE, Va. - Belvie Calvin Gammon, 74, of 1765 Loom Fixer Lake Road, died suddenly Monday, Dec. 16, 2002.
Born April 17, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Sam Henry Gammon and Thelma White Gammon.
He lived his entire life in the Pittsylvania County and Danville areas where, prior to his retirement, he was employed with Masonite as an equipment operator and farmed for many years.
He served in the U.S. Army in the Korean Conflict. He married Freda McDaniel Gammon Aug. 2, 1950. In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by three daughters, Lois G. Finney of Cascade, Judy G. Finney of Danville and Joyce G. Weatherford of Chatham; four brothers, Doug Gammon, Marvin Gammon, Jack Gammon, all of Dry Fork and Oakes Gammon, Pelham, Va.; one sister, Iris G. Scearce of Dry Fork; and one grandchild.
He was predeceased by one son, Barry Carl Gammon and one brother, Albert Gammon.
The graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Wayne Hall officiating.

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - David J. "Bubba" Hairston, 46, of 101 Paradise Hills, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002 at Roanoke Community Hospital, Roanoke, Va.
Born Nov. 3, 1956, in Martinsville, he was the son of Robert L. Hairston Sr. and Sallie Dillard Hairston.
He married Juanita Martin Hairston. He was a resident of Henry County for 21 years.
He was an employee of Chatmoss Country Club in the Tennis Complex for eight years.
He was a member of Greater New Bethel Apostolic Church and was their Minister of Music.
In addition to his wife, of the residence, and his mother, of Martinsville, he is survived by two daughters, La'Toya H. Seay of Suffolk, Va. and Tyshemia P. Robinson of Oceanside, Calif.; three sons, Andre' J. Hairston of Land-of-Lakes, Fla., Daniel O. Hairston of Blacksburg, Va. and David C. Hairston, of Norfolk, Va.; one step-mother, Gertrude T. Hairston of Martinsville; two sisters, Gloria H. Richardson and Deborah H. Hairston, both of Martinsville; and three brothers, Irvin D. Hairston, Tony C. Hairston and Jeffrey C. Billie Jo Harrelson Pruitt
RUFFIN, N.C. - Billie Jo Harrelson Pruitt, 64, of 177 Joe Cobb Road, died suddenly Monday Dec. 16, 2002 at Annie Penn Hospital in Reidsville.
Born March 9, 1938, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Wilbur S. Harrelson and Mary Crumpton Harrelson Nicks.
She was a homemaker, a member of Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church and a graduate of Cobb Memorial High School.
She married Wilson Pruitt.
In addition to her husband, of the home, she is survived by one daughter, Janet Pruitt Reagan of Albany, Ga; one son, Timothy Lee Pruitt of Reidsville; one sister, Barbara Ann H. Cook of Greensboro; one brother, Wilbur "Tommy" Harrelson of Ruffin; and five grandchildren.

N. Edna Patterson Baynes
BEAUFORT, S.C. - Nannie Edna Patterson Baynes, 101, passed away Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, in the Bay View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born July 16, 1901 in Milton, N.C., she was the daughter of John Patterson and Ellen Logan Patterson. Her family relocated to Danville, Va, where she attended the public school in Pittsylvania County. She married Bedford Bixler Baynes in 1921. He predeceased her in 1976.
She took pleasure in reading the Bible, sewing and quilting. She lived her life magnifying and praising God and was mindful of the verse in Hebrews 13:14, "For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come." She is survived by five children, Edna Taylor and Audrey Spellman, both of Lansdowne, Va., Caudie Harris, Danville, Va., Dorothy Davis, Bluffton, S.C. and Deloris Mosley, Yeadon, Pa; 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two children, Bedford Bixler Baynes Jr. and Stanley Decatur Baynes Sr.

Charlie Davis
RINGGOLD, Va. - Charlie Calvin Davis, 71, of 412 Ringgold Road, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002 in Danville Regional Medical Center after being in declining health for several years and in the hospital for one week.
Born Feb. 10, 1931, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Lacy Oliver Davis and Viola Lee Ricketts Davis.
He had lived all of his life in the Mount Hermon and the Ringgold communities. He was a 1950 graduate of the former Whitmell Farm Life School. Prior to retiring due to a disability in 1978, he was co-owner and operator of the former Davis & Davis Florist. He was a member of Ringgold Baptist Church. He married Dorthy Rogers Davis on Nov. 20, 1955.
In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by one son, Larry W. Davis and wife Jennifer of Ringgold; one grandson, Calvin Wade Davis of Ringgold; one granddaughter, Katherine Ann Davis of Ringgold and a special friend, Robbin Hatchett of Ringgold. The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday in Highland Burial Park with the Rev. John Groff officiating.

Winnona Pippin Hopkins
BACHELORS HALL, Va. - Winnona Pippin Hopkins, 80, of 505 Windsor Court, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sep. 30, 1922, in Washington County, Va, she was the daughter of Walter Pippin and Lillie Pippin Pippin.
She lived most of her life in Danville and was a member of First Christian Church.
She had been in declining health for the past three years.
She married Joseph Green Hopkins, who predeceased her in January 1996.
She is survived by a son, Joseph L. Hopkins, of the residence and one sister, Wanda Mobley of Danville.

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Louise Fields Irby, 68, of 200 Sycamore Road, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born July 7, 1934, in Hancock County, Tenn., she was the daughter of Alfred Fields and Dollie Bolding Fields. She was a member of the Randolph Memorial Baptist Church, Madison Heights, Va. She was married to James Edward Irby.
In addition to her husband, of the residence, she is survived by one son, Johnnie H. Smith of Prince George, Va; one stepdaughter, Sandra Greene of Lynchburg, two stepsons, Thomas Irby of Clarksville, Va and Bruce Irby of Amherst, Va; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
