Louis Lee Milam
DANVILLE, Va. - Louis Lee Milam, 83, of 450 Piney Forest Road, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at Piney Forest Health Care Center after six months of declining health.
Born Oct. 4, 1919, in Halifax County, he was the son of Ruth Pearl Milam Grinstead.
He had lived his entire life in the Danville area and prior to his retirement, worked as an agent for Southland Life Insurance Company. He was a member of North Main Baptist Church.
He was a World War II army veteran, serving with Company F of the 116th Infantry in Normandy, France, the Rhineland and Western Europe. He received a Purple Heart, the American Defense Service Medal and the European/African/Middle East Service Medal.
He was married to Isabelle Williams Milam, who predeceased him on June 6, 2000.
He is survived by several cousins, including John Harvey Moore of Ringgold and June Moore Hill of Danville.
The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Jack Noble officiating. Interment will follow with military honors by American Legion Post 1097.

Georgia C. Mize
ACCIDENT, Md. - Georgia C. Mize, 82, formerly of 204 Haynesworth Drive, Danville, Va., died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at Cherry Hill Assisted Living Home.
Born May 27, 1920, in Mayodan, N.C., she was the daughter of Joe Richard Gentry and Hallie C. Crotts.
She lived and worked in northern Virginia for 42 years, then returned to the Danville area in August 1984. She had resided in Maryland for the past four years. She worked for Civil Service with the U.S. Postal System, was a member of Vandola Baptist Church, the Senior Citizens Club and AARP.
She was married to Russell James Mize Sr., who predeceased her April 17, 1987.
She is survived by a son, Russell James Mize Jr. of Leesburg, Va.; two daughters, Hallie M. Snyder of Oakland and Rebecca M. Sasser of Callands, Va.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Leroy Clack and the Rev. John Jones officiating. Interment will be in the Moss Family Cemetery, Danville.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home.

Herbert Powell
DANVILLE, Va. - Herbert Lee Powell, 73, of 125 London Drive, died Nov. 18, 2002 at his residence after eight months of declining health.
He was born in Pittsylvania County on March 14, 1929.
He was married to Mildred Cox Powell, who survives, on Oct. 8, 1948.
He was the son of Ira David Powell and Sue Hastings Powell.
He was retired from White Construction Inc. where he worked as a truck driver. He lived most of his life in Danville and Dry Fork.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He was predeceased by a son, Billy Ray Powell; two brothers, Oliver Powell and Howard T. Powell; one stepbrother, Jack Holland; and one grandson.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include three daughters, Peggy P. Briggs, of Prospect Hill, N.C., Pamela Kay Powell of Danville, and Rhonda P. Lester of Dry Fork; three sisters, Zora Evans of Cascade, Pasty Holly of Danville, and Edna Mae Lawrence of Callands; a stepmother, Ruby Powell of Danville; three stepbrothers, William Holland and Bobby Holland of Danville, and Danny Holland of North Carolina; a stepsister, Judy Rodgers of Thomasville, N.C.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Thomas Smith and the Rev. Billy Hedrick officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Wrenn Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Rev. Dr. Anne Plunkett Rosser
RICHMOND, Va. - Anne Burch Plunkett Rosser, of Richmond, died Sunday, November 17, 2002, at Lakewood Manor in Henrico County, Va. Born in Richmond on February 17, 1930, she was the daughter of the late John Hollyday Plunkett and Annie Burch Plunkett. In addition to her parents, her husband, the Reverend Dr. Aubrey Jones Rosser, and a brother, John H. Plunkett Jr., preceded her in death.
Dr. Rosser is survived by two sisters, Dr. Jeanne P. Beckett and her husband, Dr. Charles A. Beckett and Miss Faye C. Plunkett, all of Richmond. Her four sons also survive: Aubrey Jones Rosser Jr. and his wife, Donna H. Rosser, of Altavista, Va., Stephen Hollyday Rosser of Flanders, N.Y., Philip Webber Rosser and his wife, Tracey C. Rosser, of Richmond and Jonathan Beaulieu Rosser of New York City. She had three grandchildren: Aubrey Jones "Jay" Rosser III and Allison Wesley Rosser, both of Altavista and Renee L. Rosser of Richmond. Other surviving relatives include her brother-in-law, Dois I. Rosser Jr. and his wife, Shirley S. Rosser, sister-in-law, Lillian R. Moore and her husband, Leslie M. Moore and sister-in-law Eleanor R. Ayer, all of Hampton, Va. She is also survived by a number of beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
Dr. Rosser was graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School of Richmond in 1947 and was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Westhampton College of the University of Richmond in 1951. While a student at the University, she was honored as Queen of the May Court in 1951. As the wife of a Virginia Baptist Pastor, she served faithfully in many church capacities, most notably as a Sunday School teacher in her husband's pastorates in South Boston, Danville, Richmond, Roanoke and Hampton, including Blairs Baptist Church and Chestnut Level Baptist Church in Pittsylvania County.
In 1977, she received her Doctorate of Ministry degree from Union Theological Seminary of Richmond and in June 1978, she became the first women with a Doctorate degree ordained to pastoral ministry in the Southern Baptist Convention. She co-Pastored with her husband at Bainbridge and Southampton Baptist Churches in Richmond and later served as Associate Pastor of Hampton Baptist Church in Hampton. She also served as a visiting lecturer at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C.
In 1990, in recognition for her pioneering efforts in encouraging women in pastoral ministry, and for her dedication to the advancement of Baptist theological education in Virginia, she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree by the University of Richmond.
An avid reader and student of philosophy and history, Dr. Rosser was recognized for her scholarly approach in theological and religious issues. She was an untiring and strong advocate for the removal of barriers of race and gender to religious and spiritual service.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 20, 2002, at Grace Baptist Church, 4200 Dover Road, Richmond, Va., with the Rev. Elizabeth A. Pugh officiating. The family will receive friends at Bennett Funeral Home, 11202 Broad Street Road, Richmond, Va., on Tuesday, November 19, 2002, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. and after the memorial service on Wednesday at the church.

Thomas Stephens
DANVILLE, Va. - Thomas Lee Stephens, 76, of 210 Ethel Court, died Nov. 18, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center after 10 months of declining health.
He was born Aug. 18, 1926 in Danville.
He was the son of Henry Lee Stephens and Ruth Stephens Thedieck.
He was married to Mickey Hubbard Stephens, who survives.
He was retired from C&P Telephone Co. after 33 years of working as a telephone repairman. He lived his entire life in Danville. He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church.
He was a member of Westover Sertoma Club, where he had been a past president. He was a member of American Legion Post 325. He was a freemason for more than 50 years. He was a long-time volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America serving as a scout master of troop of 359. He was a veteran serving in the Navy in World War II aboard hospital ship USS Sanctuary as a medical corpsman.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of residence, include three sons and their wives, Thomas L. Jr. and Cindy Stephens of Richmond, Michael B. and Sandra Stephens of Danville, and Mark V. and Robin Stephens of Danville; one sister, Aleta S. Merricks of Danville; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Wrenn Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Linwood Daniel and the Rev. Tom Barnard officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 325.

Willard ‘PaPa' Bethune
DANVILLE, Va. - Willard E. "PaPa" Bethune, 73, of 327 Summit Road, died July 6, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 22, 1928, in Fort Payne, Ala., he was married to Minnie Lamb Bethune, who survives. He had lived in Rossville, Ga. prior to moving to Danville where he lived for the past 22 years. He had retired from Dan River Inc. where he had worked as a supervisor and he and his wife provided child day care in their home for several years.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two daughters, Becky Van Donsler of Knoxville, Tenn. and Debbie Biro of Danville; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. Interment will follow at the Chattanooga National Cemetery in Chattanooga, Tenn.

John P. Bowers
DANVILLE, Va. - John P. Bowers, 84, of 125 Austin Circle in the Mount Hermon community, died Friday, July 5, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 1, 1918, in Carroll County, he was the son of Joseph Bowers and Annie Edwards Bowers.
He lived most of his life in the Danville area and retired from Fieldcrest Mills. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne Division, during World War II. He served in Sicily, Naples Foggia, Rome, ARNO Rineland Ardennes Central Europe. He was awarded numerous medals including the Bronze Arrowhead. He was a member of VFW Post 647 and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include four sons, Dicky Bowers of Pine Grove, Ky., Steven Bowers of Washington, D.C., David Bowers of Danville, and Tim Bowers of Danville; two sisters, Frances Vipperman of Radford and Lou Woods of Bassett; and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one daughter, Alma Lee Bowers; three brothers, James Bowers, Raymond Bowers, and Howard Bowers; and three sisters, Mary Sharpe, Mamie Goad, and Catherine Bowers.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. James Mayes officiating. Interment will follow with military honors by American Legion Dan River Post 1097.
The family received friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the residence.

James Canupp Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - James Thomas Canupp Sr., 69, of 314 Lansbury Drive, died July 7, 2002, at Stratford Health Care Center following declining health for the past three years and spending the last three weeks in the hospital.
Born on July 8, 1932, in Monroe, NC, he was the son of the late Robert Lee Canupp Sr. and Evie Lee Gibbons Canupp, who survives.
He was married to Marie Fitch Canupp on November 28, 1959, who survives. Mr. Canupp had lived most of his life in Martinsville and Danville. He was a graduate of Martinsville High School and a graduate of Elon College. Mr. Canupp had retired from Laynes Copy Products where he had worked in sales for a number of years. He was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church and a former member of the Danville Jaycee's and the Danville Optmist Club. Mr. Canupp had coached or served as assistant Youth Baseball Coach for the Danville Little League, Sandy Koufax, Mickey Mantle and Connie Mack leagues. He served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence and mother of Martinsville, Va., include one son, James Thomas Canupp Jr. of Danville, Va.; one daughter, Pam Canupp Whitehead of Danville, Va.; two brothers, Robert Lee Canupp Jr. of Martinsville, Va., and Franklin Canupp of Martinsville, Va.; and one grandson, Thomas Daniel Whitehead.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, July 9th at 11:00 A.M. from the Moffett Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Steve Carlton and the Rev. Lee Ellison. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

DANVILLE, Va. - William "Billy" Albert Hall, 40, of 119 Davis Drive, died suddenly Saturday, July 6, 2002, at the residence.
Born Oct. 4, 1961, in Roanoke, he was the son of Gene A. Hall, who survives, and Wanda Stricklen Hall.
He moved to Danville in 1970, where he was employed as a welder. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to his father, include one son, William David Hall of Swansboro, N.C.; and one sister, Regina "Jeanie" Gail Hall of Danville.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. J. Brian Edwards officiating.

Vincent Edgar Anderson
NATHALIE, Va. - Vincent Edgar Anderson, 71, of 1012 Thornton-Jim Trail, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at his residence.
Born May 29, 1931, in Halifax County, he was a son of Dorsey Edgar Anderson, who predeceased him and Ruth Cage Anderson, who survives.
He was a member of Falling River Baptist Church.
He was married to Lois Adell Clay Anderson.
In addition to his mother of Brookneal and his wife of Nathalie, he is survived by a son, Vincent Allen Anderson of South Boston; a daughter, Wendy A. Shelton of South Boston; three stepdaughters, Linda Seamster of Gladys, Joanne Saunders of Appomattox and Dianne Strange of Nathalie; a stepson, Sammie Warriner of Nathalie; a brother, Eddison Anderson of Brookneal; five sisters, Connie Pollard of Brookneal, Betty Lou Davis of Gladys, Mildred Worsham of Lynchburg, Barbara Ann Webber of Pamplin and Ruby Reynolds of Brookneal; four step grandchildren and one step great-grandchild.
In addition to his father, he was predeceased by two sisters, Nancy Moorefield and Alene Aldred.
The funeral will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Millstone with the Rev. Bob Watts officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Wiltshire Monroe Cardwell
KEELING, Va. - Wiltshire Monroe Cardwell, age 94, of 17420 Old Richmond Road, Keeling, Va., passed away at Danville Regional Medical Center on Jan. 14, 2003, after declining health for four years and being a patient four days in the hospital.
Mr. Cardwell was born in Pittsylvania County on Sept. 19, 1908. He was the son of the late Carrie Lillie Cruse Cardwell and Frank Flippen Cardwell. Mr. Cardwell was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Alma Lucille Ingram Cardwell, in February 2000. He is the last surviving member of his immediate siblings. He was predeceased by two brothers, Frank F. Cardwell, Edward T. Cardwell; two sisters, Elizabeth C. Barker, Helen C. Ferguson and one adopted brother, Carter Adams.
As a young person, Mr. Cardwell graduated from Dan River High School in 1927 and at that time it was only necessary for graduates to complete 11 grades. He was an avid sports player and participated in team sports basketball and baseball. He was the team captain for the 1926 baseball team that won a county trophy.
As a young adult, Mr. Cardwell owned and drove a school bus for Pittsylvania County and Dan River High School. Later he owned his own construction company, Cardwell Construction Company, and worked as a carpenter to build homes for families in North Carolina and Virginia. His love of farming and the land made him a successful tobacco farmer for over 30 years. He was a member of Kentuck Presbyterian Church for over 45 years, where he had served as Deacon and Elder. He was a member of the Pittsylvania Farm Bureau.
He is survived by one son, Carroll Monroe Cardwell and daughter-in-law, Claudia Cardwell, of Dinwiddle, Va. and one daughter, Ann Marie Cardwell Roth and son-in-law, Frederick J. Roth III, of Clemmons, N.C. Mr. Cardwell has two granddaughters, Tracey Cardwell Roberts and her husband, Jay Roberts, of Charlottesville, Va. and Tiffany Cardwell Joseph and her husband, Jermeny Joseph, of Easton, Md.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Kentuck Presbyterian Church. Reverend David Smith, Pastor, will be conducting the service. Interment will follow at the family cemetery on the Keeling Farm residence.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church from 1-2 p.m. At other times the family will receive at the residence.

Martha Ann Coleman
MILTON, N.C. - Martha Ann Coleman, 61, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 10, 1941, in Caswell County, she was a daughter of Robert Thomas and Lucille Long Thomas.
She attended the public schools in Caswell County.
She is survived by six sisters, Hazel Johnson, Effie Janie Lawson, both of Roxboro, Willie Oldail Williamson, Mary Ann Featherstone, both of Maryland, Curly Haye of New York and Elizabeth Elmore of Connecticut and three brothers, James and Jim H. Thomas and Westley Jeffries, all of Milton.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Floyd Stanfield officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held 12-7 p.m. Saturday at Plenty Funeral Home. A wake will follow from 7-8 p.m.
