Mary Denny Wilson

DANVILLE, Va. - Mrs. Mary Denny Wilson of 1111 Main Street, Apartment 206 of The Stratford House died Friday, December 13, 2002 at her residence.

She was born in Reidsville, N.C., September 25, 1904, a daughter of the late Charles Harden Denny and Julia Crafton Denny.

Mrs. Wilson was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, the Junior Wednesday Club and the Wednesday Club.

A retired schoolteacher in Schoolfield, Jamestown, N.C. and in Greensboro, N.C., she attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. On June 7, 1930, she married Lawrence G. "Lefty" Wilson who died March 11, 1993.

Surviving are two daughters, Mary Wilson Parr and her husband, Wilton Parr of Charlotte, N.C. and Elizabeth Wilson Price and her husband, Beau Price of Virginia Beach, Va.; one son, Lawrence G. Wilson Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth Temple Wilson of Danville; eight grandchildren, Gary Parr, Tuxedo Park, N.Y., David Parr, Charlotte, N.C., Elizabeth Walden, Danville, Mary Temple Mullis, Nags Head, N.C., Rebecca Atkinson, Danville, Scott Price, Arlington, Va., Mark Price, Clarksville, Del. and Tim Price, Telluride, Colo.; fourteen great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 15, 2002 at 2 p.m. from the Main Street United Methodist Church by the Rev. Gary Milstead. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday, December 14, 2002 at The Evergreen Room, Stratford House from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Main Street United Methodist Church, 767 Main Street, Danville, Va. 24541 or to the charity of your choice.

Herbert H. Younger Sr.

GRETNA, Va. - Herbert H. Younger Sr., 71, of 2929 Zion Road, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002 in the V.A. Medical Center in Salem, Va.

Born Feb. 20, 1931, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Langhorne Younger and Lilia Crews Younger.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a driver for Gibson Lumber Co. of Gretna.

He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, Sunday School superintendent, Sunday School teacher and treasurer.

He was a U.S. Marine veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He married Delma M. Younger.

In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by two sons, Herbert H. Younger Jr. of Chula Vista, Calif. and Col. Kenneth M. Younger of Alexandria, Va.; one daughter, Rita Y. Jones, Gretna; four brothers, Lindbergh Younger of Gretna, Frank Younger of Philadelphia, Pa., Walter Younger of Washington, D.C. and Bobby Younger of Columbia, S.C.; three sisters, Vernell Byrd, Virginia Keatts and Gladys Burwell, all of Gretna; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by seven brothers, Harry, Charlie, Burton, James, Edison, Earl and Parrish Younger and one sister, Thelma Y. Dearing.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday from the chapel of Miller Funeral Home with the Rev. Hubert White officiating.

Interment will follow in the Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery.

Suzanne Baynes

DANVILLE, Va. - Mrs. Suzanne Smith Baynes, age 55 of 353 Autumn Lane died Monday, April 1, 2002 at The Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for the past year.

Mrs. Baynes was born in Danville, March 4, 1947, a daughter of Jack D. Smith of Riverside Health Care Center and the late Barbara Dellinger Smith who died November 29, 2001.

A member of The West End Christian Church where she sang in the church choir. Mrs. Baynes was affiliated with Dan River, Inc. in the MIS Department of the executive offices. A graduate of George Washington High School and Averett College.

She was predeceased by two brothers: Thomas Edward Smith and Glenn Warren Smith.

Besides her Father Mrs. Baynes is survived by her husband of the home, Donald W. Baynes. One daughter: Stephanie Baynes Long and son-in-law, S. Chris Long of Danville. One son: Elliot Ryan Baynes, Danville.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 4, 2002 at 2 P.M. from The Townes Funeral home Memorial Chapel by The Reverend June Haislip. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

The family received friends at Townes Funeral Home, Wednesday, April 3, 2002 from 7 to 8:30 P.M. and at other times will be at the residence, 353 Autumn Lane, Fox Hollow Farms.

Dennis Fuller

CHATHAM, Va. - Dennis Raymond Fuller, 56, of 1708 Riverhill Road in Shelby, N.C., and formerly of Chatham, died Monday, April 1, 2002, after a nine-year battle with multiple sclerosis.

Born Nov. 12, 1945, in Geneva, Ohio, he was a son of Dana Adelford Fuller Sr. and Emma Irene Penhollow.

He was married 33 years to Sandra Fuller, who survives. He was a member of Greenpond Baptist Church. He was a 1968 bachelor of science graduate from Evangel College in Springfield, Mo. He served in the military from 1968-1971 as a sergeant in the 429th Medical Corp of Ft. Bragg, N.C. In 1971, he came to Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham and retired in 2001. During his 30 years at Hargrave, he served as baseball, basketball and soccer coach; heath and PE instructor; headmaster; chaplain; and commandant.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of Shelby, N.C., include two sons, Scott Fuller of Chatham and Brian Fuller of Hurt; three brothers, David Fuller of Ashtabula, Ohio, Richard Fuller of Canton, Mich. and Dana Fuller Jr. of North Port, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Owen R. Cheatham Chapel at Hargrave Military Academy with the Rev. Curtis English officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham with military rites by American Legion Post 1097.

The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Thursday at Scott Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence of Scott Fuller, 19901 U.S. 29 in Chatham.

Mary Gilliland

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Mary Carter Hundley Gilliland of the Woodview Nursing Home, died April 1, 2002.

Born March 14, 1910, in Norfolk, she was the daughter of Laura Lee Carter Hundley and Maury Hundley.

She was married to Charles Trent Gilliland, who predeceased her. She was educated in Essex County schools and was a graduate of Lynchburg College. She was a home economist for the local power company. After retiring she taught third grade at Washington Coleman Elementary School. She was a member of First Baptist Church of South Boston where she taught youth and adult Sunday school. She assisted in organizing the first young people's Sunday school department and was active in Women's Missionary Society, having served as president twice. She was a member of the local DAR and was also active in the Women's Club of South Boston.

Survivors include one son, Trent Hundley Gilliland; one grandson; two sisters, Laura Lee Thomas of Little Rock, Ark., Garnett Beckman of Phoenix, Ariz.; two brothers, Chaplain Col. Maury Hundley, USA (R) of Roanoke, and Lt. Col. Charles Proctor Hundley, USAF (R) of St. Petersburg, Fla.

The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Oak Ridge Cemetery with Chaplain Hundley officiating.

The family suggests memorials may be made to the Laura and Maury Hundley Memorial Fund at the Rappahannock Christian Church, P.O. Box 1117, Dunnsville, Va. 22454.

Naomi Grubb

CHATHAM, Va. - Naomi Reynolds Grubb, 75, of 301 Gammon Lake Road, died Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center in Danville.

Born Jan. 19, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Osbey Allen Reynolds and Annie Clark Reynolds.

She was married to Jesse Mark Grubb, who survives. She was a member of the Christian Tabernacle Church.

Survivors, in addition to her husband of Chatham, include one son, Jerry Grubb of Danville; two daughters, Pamela Grubb Kendrick of Chatham, and Kathy Grubb Barger of Newport News; two sisters, Vera Reynolds Oakes of Callands and Helen R. Reynolds of Newport News; two brothers, Richard Reynolds of Callands and Jim C. Reynolds of Danville; and six grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one brother, Dennis Reynolds.The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Christian Tabernacle Church in Callands with the Rev. Roy Parker officiating. Interment will follow at Grubb Family Cemetery in Chatham.

The family received friends from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Christian Tabernacle Church and other times will be at the residence.

Minnie Moses

CHATHAM, Va. - Minnie Jacobs Moses, formerly of Chatham, died Wednesday, April 3, 2002 in Raleigh, N.C., where she had lived with family since 1999. She was 90 years old.

For over 50 years she assisted in managing and editing "The Star Tribune" with her late husband, Preston B. Moses, longtime editor of the county newspaper and community leader.

She was born September 27, 1911. She was the daughter of the late Samuel T. Jacobs and Molly Simpson Jacobs of Hurt, VA.

She was a member of the Chatham Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon. She was also a member of the William Pitt Chapter of the DAR and the Pittsylvania County Historical Society. She served as a tutor in the Pittsylvania County Literacy Program.

She was educated at Lynchburg Business College and Cornell Medical Center in New York City where she received her bachelors' degree in nursing.

Survivors include one son, P. Donald Moses of Staunton; two daughters, Eve M. Thorson of Richmond and Pattie M. Lilley of Raleigh, N.C.; one brother, Roy H. Jacobs of Hampton; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Calvin Jacobs; and two sisters, Henrietta J. Boyd and Margaret J. Aimone.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, April 6, 2002 at the Chatham Presbyterian Church at 2 PM by the Rev. Walker Pettyjohn. Interment will be at the Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Chatham Presbyterian Church or other charity. Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Maude Richardson

AXTON, Va. - Maude Phillips Richardson, 89, of Mountain Valley Eldercare, died Monday, April 1, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville/Henry County.

Born Feb. 24, 1913, in Fries, she was a daughter of W.S. Phillips and Addie Funk Phillips.

She was married to Roy E. Richardson, who predeceased her. She was retired from Fieldcrest Mills and was a member of Fieldale Methodist Church.

Survivors include one stepdaughter, Montrose Martin of Hudson, N.C.; one son, David Richardson of Collinsville; one stepson, Bowman Richardson of Virgilina; one sister, Jane Nester of Fieldale; two brothers, Bill Phillips of Brooksville, Fla. and Ben Phillips of Martinsville; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by one stepdaughter, Ella Spencer; one sister, Carrie Phillips; and two brothers, Floyd Phillips and Robert "Buddy" Phillips.

The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Roselawn Burial Park with the Rev. Russell Cheatham officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and other times will be at the residence of David Richardson, 521 Seminole Drive in Collinsville.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Axton Life Saving Crew, P.O. Box 458, Axton, Va. 24054 or to a charity of choice.

Buford Rowland

GRETNA, Va. - Buford Bennett Rowland, 91, died Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at Gretna Health Care Center.

Born March 21, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William Amos Rowland and Jenny Kate Eanes Rowland.

He was married to Sarah Rebecca Rowland, who predeceased him. He was a member of Greenfield Baptist Church and was a retired farmer.

Survivors include five sisters, Minnie Elliott of Crewe, Nora Mills of Gretna, Virginia Rowland of Gretna, Irma Seamster of Elon College, N.C. and Evelyn Hughes of Danville.

He was predeceased, in addition to his wife and parents, by one brother, Jessie Rowland.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Greenfield Baptist Church with the Rev. R.G. Rowland officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home.

Annie Scearce

DANVILLE, Va. - Annie Kate Scearce, 90, formerly of 559 Westover Drive, died Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 17, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of James L. Scearce and Maggie Stegall Scearce.

She lived most of her life in the Danville area and worked for The Memorial Hospital of Danville as a nurse assistant prior to her retirement. She had been a patient at Piney Forest Health Care Center since 1999, before spending three weeks in the hospital. She was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include one sister, Lois Davis of Danville, and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four sisters and two brothers.

The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Billy Scearce officiating.

The family received friends from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home.

Zelda Soyars

PELHAM, N.C. - Zelda S. Soyars, 62, of 1841 Red Marshall Road, died Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at Annie Penn Hospital in Reidsville.

Born Aug. 21, 1939, in Danville, Va., she was a daughter of Raymond Irvin Scearce and Zelda Ferguson Scearce.

She was married to Robert O. Soyars, who survives. She lived most of her life on Mt. Cross Road in Danville, Va. and attended Danville Public Schools. She worked for Dan River Mills prior to her retirement on disability. She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include one daughter, Mary A. Soyars of the residence; one son, Robert O. Soyars Jr. of Greensboro; two brothers, Arnold Brian Scearce of Pelham and Gene Mark Scearce of Reidsville; three sisters, Gayle S. Harrell of Pelham and Cherrie A. Crouse and Pattie Jo Reynolds, both of Danville, Va.

She was predeceased by one infant son, John W. Soyars; one brother, Raymond Whorley Scearce; and two sisters, Carolyn Leigh Scearce and Judy S. Brooks.

The family will be at the residence.

Robert Spencer

STRASBURG, Va. - Robert Spencer, 55, of 175 S. Charles St., died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Aug. 11, 1946, in Lynchburg, he was a son of Lizzie Haley Spencer, who survives, and Kinkle Spencer.

He was disabled and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors, in addition to his mother of Gretna, include one son, Dabrin Spencer of Baltimore; two sisters, Mary Ann Meggison and Ruth H. Sandidge, both of Lynchburg; and one grandson.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Miller Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert P. King officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Airy Baptist Church cemtery.

The family will be at the residence of his mother, 103 Colonial Ridge in Gretna.

Walter Blaine Bowman

MARION, Va. - Walter Blaine Bowman, age 67, went to be with the Lord, May 6, 2002 in Bluefield Regional Medical Center, Bluefield, West Virginia after a brief illness. Mr. Bowman was born December 14, 1934 in Mudfork, Virginia. He was employed by Palace Vending of Kingsport, Tennessee at the time of his death. Previously he was employed by VDOT and VAVAA of Richmond, Virginia. Mr. Bowman had served with the Third Infantry Division of the U.S. Army in Germany from 1957 to 1963. He was a member of the Mudfork Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife, Frances Nora Boothe Bowman of Marion, Virginia. Two daughters and one son-in-law, Charles and Lynda Barker of Marion, Virginia and Brenda McFarlane of Parkersburg, West Virginia. One son and daughter-in-law, Charlie and Carol Bowman of Danville, Virginia. Two grandchildren, Charlie Blaine Barker of Christiansburg, Virginia and Codi Bowman of Roanoke, Virginia. His mother, Geneva Bowman of Mudfork, Virginia. One sister and brother-in-law, Bill and Nancy James of Canton, Ohio. One brother and sister-in-law, Clarence and Dora Bowman of Bluefield, Virginia. Several nieces and nephews. Numerous friends and co-workers. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, May 9, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Pastor Johnny Elmor and Pastor Tim Carlson officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Seaver-Brown Funeral Service is serving the Bowman Family.
