Ruth Hooker Wyatt
DANVILLE, Va. - Ruth Hooker Wyatt, 71, of 203 Baugh St., died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after six months of declining health.
Born May 19, 1931, in Stuart, she was a daughter of Harvey Perry Hooker and Lucy Maybell Hooker.
She lived most of her life in the Danville area and prior to her retirement, worked as a nursing assistant for Danville Regional Medical Center. She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by three daughters, Sylvia Abbott, Tina Hamilton and Delores Scearce, all of Danville; a brother, Harvey P. Hooker Jr. of the residence; a sister, Ruby Stapp of Dry Fork and six grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Vicky Scearce Barksdale.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Hershel Stone officiating. Interment will be in the Stapp Family cemetery in Dry Fork.
The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times will be at the residence of her daughter, 4438 Westover Drive.

Oscar F. Adkins Jr.
DRY FORK, Va. - Oscar F. Adkins Jr., 44, of 8804 Franklin Turnpike, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at his residence.
Born Jan. 29, 1958, in Danville, he was the son of Oscar F. Adkins Sr., who predeceased him in 1977 and Irene Lewis Adkins, who survives.
He lived most of his life in the Blairs community, where he worked in the family grocery business, R.N. Adkins & Son General Merchandise. He worked at American National Bank & Trust from 1981-1991 as a teller and later in collections. In 1991, he joined the staff of Swicegood Funeral Home, where he worked primarily in the business office.
He was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School, served as treasurer from 1987-2001 and served as Lay Speaker and Lay Leader for many years.
He was a member of Carter Masonic Lodge #323 A.F. & A.M. in Blairs, serving as Worshipful Master in 1994.
He married Phyllis Hearp Adkins on June 18, 1994.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Ottoway F. Adkins of the residence and two brothers, Charles W. Adkins and Robert T. "Bob" Adkins, both of Blairs.
In addition to his father, he was predeceased by a brother, William "Bill" Adkins, in 1972.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Stanley C. Pique, the Rev. James L. Gravely III and the Rev. Dr. Leroy Clack officiating. Interment with Masonic rites by Carter Masonic Lodge #323 A.F. & A.M. will be held in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 8804 Franklin Turnpike, Dry Fork, and at the residence of his mother, 8545 U.S. Highway 29, Blairs.

Clyde Irving Bliss
DANVILLE, Va. - Clyde Irving Bliss, 78, of 251 Crosland Avenue, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, in Stratford Health Care Center, after a period of declining health.
Born July 10, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Charles A. Bliss Sr. and Virginia Vernon Bliss, who predeceased him.
Mr. Bliss had lived his entire life in Danville and Pittsylvania County and retired in 1975 from Crane Tire Company. He was a member of the Woodberry Hills Baptist Church, where he had served on the board of deacons, taught Sunday School, was a choir member and served on various church committees. Mr. Bliss was also a member of the American Legion Post #325 and a former member of the Sertoma Club.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army Air Corp in the Pacific theatre.
He was married to Lillie Mae Mills Bliss on Aug. 3, 1946.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Michael Keith Bliss and his wife, Nancy of Danville; a daughter, Pamela Bliss Brown and her husband, William Brown Jr. of Danville; a brother, Charles A. Bliss of Danville; two sisters, Frances Bliss Marshall and Shelby Bliss Robertson of Danville; four grandchildren, Melanie Bliss Ford and her husband, Thomas, Robert Brown, John Bliss and Matthew Bliss, all of Danville.
In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by a brother, Howard N. Bliss.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Lewis Harris, the Rev. Melvin Winters and the Rev. Larry Farrell officiating. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors by the American Legion Post #325.

David Johnson Bray
CASCADE, Va. - David Johnson Bray, 88, formerly of 293 Marlin Road, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003 in Riverside Health Care Center, after being in declining health for the past four years and at Riverside for one month.
Born May 20, 1914, in Henry County, he was the son of John O. Bray and Cora Davis Bray, who predeceased him.
He had lived his entire life in Pittsylvania County, where he was a self-employed logger. He was of the Baptist faith.
He married Hattie McMillion Bray on Dec. 2, 1932.
In addition to his wife, of Danville, he is survived by one son, David Samuel Bray of Danville; four daughters, Hazel B. Lewis of Rowland, N.C., Louise B. Ingram of Virginia Beach, Shirley B. Webb of Clintwood and Elsie B. Powell of Cascade; 13 grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one son, Darryl Wayne Bray; three brothers, Edgar Bray, Joe Bray and Lewis Bray; one sister, Mollie Bray; and one granddaughter, Patty Williams.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Bray Family Cemetery with the Rev. Gilmore Hundley officiating.
The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel. At other times they will be at the residence of the son, 8993 Mount Cross Road.

Arnold 'Dale' Flinn
CLARKSVILLE, Va. - Arnold "Dale" Flinn, 54, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.
He was the son of Arnold Sinclair Flinn and Lois Flinn Johnson.
He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and worked for Wilbourne Trucking Company.
He is survived by a son, Andrew Dale Flinn of Clarksville and a sister, Phyllis Harris of Danville.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Watkins Cooper Lyon Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Wallace officiating. Interment will follow in Bluestone Cemetery.

Anne Young Gray Frye
BURLINGTON, N.C. - Mrs. Anne Young Gray Frye, 68, of 3821 Quail Run Lane, died Monday, January 13, 2003, at Duke University Medical Center. She was a native of Pittsylvania County and the daughter of the late Robert Paul Gray and the late Fiona Moss Young Gray.
Mrs. Frye retired after 25 years in the public school system having taught 23 years with the Guilford County School System. She taught at Stokesdale School, Northeast Junior High and McLeansville Middle School. She was a graduate of Malone College in Canton, Ohio receiving her bachelors degree and she later received her teaching certificate from High Point College. Mrs. Frye was a member of New Garden Friends Meeting in Greensboro. She served as a volunteer with the American Friends Service Committee and as a member of the Executive Committee for the Southeastern Regional Office. She also was a member of the United Society of Friends Women. Mrs. Frye was a lifeline volunteer at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
Her hobbies were "grandmothering", gardening, gourmet cooking and ballroom dancing.
Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Dr. Buford Vernon Frye of the home, daughter and son-in-law, Susan Kay Harris and her husband, David of Moncure; sons and daughter-in-law, Dr. Stephen Vernon Frye and his wife, Susan Benolken of Chapel Hill and Dr. Jonathan Gray Frye of San Diego, Calif.; grandchildren, Aaron Gray Frye, Jeremy Sutton Frye, Rachel Young Frye, Olivia Leanne Harris and Jesse Vernon Harris; brothers, Ernest Freeman Gray of Kennewick, Wash., Alfred Joseph Gray of Danville, Va., Robert Paul Gray of Cascade, Va., Cabell Kenneth Gray and Larry Roger Gray both of Danville, Va.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Donald Harper Gray.
The funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, at 3:00 p.m. at the New Garden Friends Meeting by Pastoral Minister David Bills. The burial will follow in the New Garden Friends Meeting Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory and at other times at the residence.

Ronald 'Ronnie' Coleman Hedrick
MIDLOTHIAN, Va. - Ronald Coleman "Ronnie" Hedrick, 71, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at Johnston-Willis Hospital.
Born Aug. 20, 1931, in Roanoke, he was the son of Henry Hedrick and Emma Tuck Hedrick.
He was a retired supervisor with General Electric in Lynchburg, a former member of the Gretna Rescue Squad, a former member of the Gretna Volunteer Fire Department and a former member of the Gretna Jaycees.
He is survived by three daughters, Tami Arthur of Midlothian, Terri Nunes of Kilmarnock and Tracie Creed of Midlothian; a brother, Ted Hedrick of Sandy Level; a sister, LaWanda Faulkner of Severna Park, Md.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Colbert-Moran Chapel with the Rev. Gene Ashworth officiating. Interment with military honors by VFW Post #4165 and DAV Chapter 46 will follow in Liberty Memorial Cemetery.

Dot Lowe
DANVILLE, Va. - Dorothy Scearce Lowe, 70, formerly of 184 Lambert Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, in the Piney Forest Health Care Center after being in declining health for the past 12 months.
Born March 17, 1932, in Fredricksburg, she was the daughter of Beaumont W. Scearce and Louise Walker Scearce.
She had lived in Fredricksburg prior to moving to Danville, where she lived most of her life.
She was employed by Dan River, Inc. for a period of time before becoming a full-time homemaker. She was of the Catholic faith.
She married James L. Lowe in June 1950. He predeceased her in 1974.
She is survived by two sons, James (Tony) Lowe of Wilmington, N.C. and Monte Lowe of Clemons, N.C.; three daughters, Scarlett L. Duncan, Lisa L. Aherron and Tammy L. Smith, all of Ringgold; one sister, Nayden S. Hayden of Fredricksburg; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with Father Charles Breindel and Fannie Lowe, Missionary, officiating.
A private interment will be held at a later date.

William Percy Miller Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - William Percy Miller Jr., 71, of 253 Kenmore Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 6, 1931, in Danville, he was the son of William Percy Miller Sr. and Mildred P. Miller.
He was employed at Amtrack Railroad. He was the first black person to play baseball for the Danville Leafs. He was a graduate of John M. Langston High School, where he played basketball on a state championship team. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was married to Cleotha G. Miller.
In addition to his wife of Danville, he is survived by two sons, Darryl Miller and J.W. Miller, both of Danville; a daughter, Chaunta Miller of Millison, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Anna Gillison and a stepson, Robert Gillison, both of Danville.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. William Dixon officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post #29.
A viewing will be held 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at L.H. Brooks and Brothers Funeral Home.

Frances Elizabeth Pearson
CHATHAM, Va. - Frances Elizabeth Pearson, 81, of 1196 Cavalry Road, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 16, 1921, in Danville, she was the daughter of Sallie Wyatt Pearson and Carroll M. Pearson.
She was a member of Swansonville Pentecostal Holiness Church and attended Mathews Memorial Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by a sister, Sallie Ann Pearson of Chatham.
She was predeceased by a sister, Mozelle Edna Pearson Walker and a brother, Cecil Pearson.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mathews Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Russell East III officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Scott Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence.

Thomas Francis Pritchett
RECTORTOWN, Va. - Thomas Francis Pritchett, 76, a retired Vice President of the former Woodward and Lothrop Department Store in Washington, died Jan. 8, 2003 at Faquier Hospital in Warrenton, Va. He had Alzheimer's Disease.
Pritchett, who resided in Rectortown, Va. at the time of his death, was a longtime resident of Delaplane, Va. and maintained a summer residence in Southwest Harbor, Maine.
He was born in Danville, Va., July 31, 1926, the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Harry W. Pritchett. He joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 and served, during World War II, on a minesweeper in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he returned to Virginia to graduate from Augusta Military Academy, which he had attended prior to his Naval service. Pritchett graduated from the College of Washington and Lee in 1950, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
He was married in 1951 to the former Catherine Lee DuBois of Washington. He worked briefly for Dan River Mills in Dallas, Texas before returning to the Washington area in mid-1952 to join Woodward and Lothrop. Pritchett was manager of the store's flagship branch at Friendship Heights from 1962-1968. He retired as Vice President in 1979 after more than a quarter century of service.
His keen interest in the outdoors was reflected in becoming involved in the ownership and operation of a Nova Scotia Salmon Farm and also in developing the "Duck Plucker," a device for removing feathers from wild ducks which was marketed for many years through the Orvis Company.
Pritchett served on the vestry and as senior warden of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Delaplane. He was a member of the Chevy Chase Club, the Metropolitan Club, the Causeway Club and Southwest Harbor Fleet.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Catherine Butler Dicker of Dover, N.H. and Virginia Fairfax Steckbeck of Natick, Mass.; a son, Samuel DuBois Pritchett of Markham, Va.; a brother, Harry W. Pritchett Jr. of Danville, Va.; a sister, Mrs. Jeanne Blake of Naples, Fla.; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Delaplane, Saturday, Jan. 18, at noon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association of Washington, D.C. or the Hospice of Northern Virginia.
