NATHALIE, Va. - Phillip Newman Ragsdale, 62, of 3216 Beaver Pond Road, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 22, 1940, in Halifax County, he was the son of Clinton Lacy Ragsdale and Lottie Landrum Ragsdale.
He was a member of Liberty United Church of Christ, the Volens American Legion and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was married to Phyllis Saunders Ragsdale.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Kelvin Phillip Ragsdale; a sister, Mary Ragsdale; a brother, Glenwood Lacy Ragsdale Sr. and three grandchildren, all of Nathalie.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Liberty United Church of Christ with the Rev. Dwight Moore officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Nannie Bell Williams Strange
DANVILLE, Va. - Nannie Bell Williams Strange, 73, of 1409 Oak Hill Road, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Riverside Health Care.
Born Nov. 9, 1929, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Walter Williams, who predeceased her and Almeda Adams Williams, who survives.
She was employed for several years at American Furniture Company in Martinsville. She was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Cascade.
She was married to Percy Strange, who predeceased her.
In addition to her mother of Cascade, she is survived by five daughters, Dorothy Strange Motley, Patricia Ann Strange, Tanya Strange Easley, all of Danville, Gloria Strange Gravely and Annie Strange Dillard, both of Martinsville; a stepdaughter, Bridget Martin of Washington, D.C.; 10 sons, Charlie Edward Strange, Leon Strange, Richard Wayne Strange, Gordon Lynn Strange, all of Danville, Curtis Jerome Strange, Marvin Larnell Strange, both of Cascade, Michael Anthony Strange, David E. Strange, both of Axton, James Daniel Strange of Reidsville, N.C. and Keith Bernard Strange of Danville; two stepsons, Calvin Thomas of Newport News and Percy Martin of Washington, D.C.; 11 sisters, Leona Hairston, Shirley Ann Strange, Mary Wytch, Virginia Ingram, Donna Adams, all of Cascade, Martha Wilson of Eden, N.C., Wanda Nowlin of High Point, N.C., Josephine Stockton, Patti Giles, both of Martinsville, Rosetta Keen of Axton and Catherine Dillard of Vernon Hill; four brothers, Grover Williams, Joseph Williams, both of Rahway, N.J., Freddie Williams of Martinsville and Charles Williams of Cascade; 37 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her father, she was predeceased by a daughter, Joyce Strange Gravely and three sisters, Viola Williams Adams, Alberta Williams Walker and Annie Williams Best.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. John W. Tinsley officiating. Interment will follow in the Strange Family Cemetery, Cascade.

James Edward Stroud
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - James Edward Stroud, 73, of 5610 Mooretown Road, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at the Williamsburg Community Hospital.
Born Dec. 29, 1929, in Rockingham County, N.C., he was a son of Richmond Hobson Stroud and Jessie Easley Stroud, who predeceased him.
He attended the Bellevue Gospel Chapel in Bellevue, Pa.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the 78th Engineering Division of the U.S. Army.
He was a retired electrician.
He was married to Karen Grubbs Stroud.
In addition to his wife, of the home, he is survived by one son, James Rodney Stroud of Williamsburg; one daughter, Gina Stroud Binder of Manassas; three sisters, Rachel Stroud Anderson of New Bern, N.C., Mildred Stroud Markham of Blanch, N.C. and Nancy Stroud McGee of Danville; one brother, Harvey Stroud of Pelham, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Martha Stroud Marchand and Gloria Stroud Mills; and two brothers, Donald Stroud and William (Bill) Stroud.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Townes Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Roy Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in the Hylton Family Cemetery on the Stony Mill Road. Full military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Dan River Post #1097.

John Thomas Thompson Sr.
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - John Thomas Thompson Sr., 82, of 2508 Halifax Road, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at his residence.
Born June 21, 1920, in Halifax County, he was the son of William Calvin Thompson and Edna Vaughan Thompson.
He was the former owner of T & T Motors. He was a member of Beth Car Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
He was married to Gladys Compton Thompson. In addition to his wife of South Boston, he is survived by two sons, John Thomas Thompson Jr. of Atherton, Calif. and Nelson Wayne Thompson of South Boston; a brother, the Rev. James T. Thompson of Lynchburg and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Beth Car Baptist Church with the Rev. Lewis Wall officiating. Interment will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

DANVILLE, Va. - Bertha Sue Adams Blevins, 51, of 5020 Ridgewood Drive, died Suday, May 12, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born August 30, 1950 in Pikeville, Ky., she was a daughter of Alvis Adams and Elmo Branham Adams, who both survive.
She was married to Donald J. Blevins, who survives. She lived her entire life in Danville and was of the Baptist faith. She attended Brush Arbor Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence and her parents if Pikeville, Ky., include two sons, Jackie Dwayne Blevins of South Carolina and Sgt. Steven Derick Blevins of U.S. Army Fort Hood, Texas; one daughter, Jennifer Renee Blevins of Danville; two sisters, Ersa York of Richmond, Ky. and Loretta Little of Pikeville, Ky.; two brothers, William Adams of White Lake, Mich. and Roger Adams of Pikeville, Ky.; and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Revs. J.B. Baldridge and Stephen Lamb. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

William Booth Jr.
PHOENIX, Ariz. - William Irvine Booth Jr., died Feb. 27, 2002.
Born in Danville, Va., he was the son of William Irvine Booth and Melba Harvey Booth.
He was a World War II Army veteran and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1951. He was a retired base architect for Luke Air Force Base in Phoenix.
Survivors include one son, Kevin William Booth; one daughter, Laura Michelle Booth, both of Seattle, Wash.; and one brother, Dr. John L. Booth of Phoenix.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Mountain View Cemetery in Danville with the Rev. David Abernathy officiating.

Randall Bowman
SUTHERLIN, Va. - Randall Lane Bowman, 35, of 1121 White Ridge Road, died Sunday, May 12, 2002 at Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.
Born February 14, 1967, he was a son of Joseph Roosevelt Bowman and Joyce Sheets Bowman, who both survive.
Mr. Bowman lived most of his life in Danville and was of the Holiness faith. He was a self employed furniture maker. He had been in declining health for one year.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include one brother, Richard Lynn Bowman of Ringgold, Va.; one sister-in-law, Debbye Bowman, of Ringgold, Va.; one sister, Rhonda Leigh Bowman, of Danville; seven uncles, Allen Sheets, Russell Sheets, Arlan Sheets, Daniel Sheets, and Albert Sheets, all of Danville, Bryant Sheets of West Virginia, and Hebert Bowman of Taswell, Va.; and three aunts, Sandy Wilkerson, Wanda Arnold, and Jane Shields, all of Danville, Va.

AXTON, Va. - Bobby Harold Chism Jr., 40, of 418 Conway Drive, died 8:39 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 24, 1962, in Danville, he was the son of Bobby Harold Chism Sr. and Patsye Rigney Chism who survive.
He was married Dec. 28, 2001, to Debra Spence Chism, who survives. He worked for Hagmeyer as a store room clerk at Goodyear Tire and Rubber. He attended Mount Herman Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Dustin Harold Chism of Milton, N.C.; one brother, Michael W. Chism of Danville; one stepson, Paul T. Spence Jr. of Shaw Air Force Base, S.C.; one stepdaughter, Tommi J. Woods of Martinsville.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel, 2025 North Main St. in Danville with the Rev. Don Davidson and the Rev. Whiteheart officiating.

Nannie Dickerson
RUFFIN, N.C. - Nannie Carter Dickerson, 90, of 2658 Guerrant Springs Road, died on Tuesday, May 13, 2002 at her residence.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Thursday, May 16, 2002 at Dan River Primitive Baptist Church and the burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Dickerson was a native of Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late John and Emma Pearman Carter. She was retired from the American Tobacco Company and was a member of Dan River Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Lee Dickerson.
She is survived by her sons, John T. McCollum and wife, Kay of Ruffin, Joe P. McCollum and wife, Becky of Summerfield and James E. "Jocko" Dickerson and wife, JoAnn of Ruffin; 10 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; sisters, Ollie C. Gauldin and Gladys C. Carroll both of Ruffin, Theresa C. Strader of Reidsville and Rachel C. Walker of Eden.
The visitation will be Wednesday evening, May 15, 2002 from 7:00-9:00 PM at Wilkerson Funeral Home and other times at the home.
Willie Dodson
DANVILLE, Va. - Willie James Dodson, 88, of 901 Washington St., died Friday, May 10, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Oct. 9, 1913, in Danville, he was the son of George Dodson and Emma Hayes Dodson.
He was a soldier for the U.S. Army and was the last surviving member of his generation.
The graveside service will be held noon Thursday at Oak Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Samuel Griffith officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
The viewing will be held 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home and the family will receive friends at the residence.

Heather Joy Edmonds
EDEN, N.C. - Heather Joy Edmonds, 19, of 14709 N.C. Highway 87 North, Eden, NC died Monday afternoon. The funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Hampton Heights Baptist Church where she was a member.
Miss Edmonds was a graduate of Westover Christian Academy in Danville, Virginia. She had attended Stone-Eden Christian School and was currently a second year student of Rockingham Community College. She was also a member of Rockingham After Five Christian Womens Club.
Surviving are parents, Harry Lee and Sandra Price Edmonds of the home; grandmothers, Naomi M. Edmonds of Eden, and Eunice K. Price of Eden; brothers, Mitchell D. Edmonds (and wife, Angie) of Eden, Tech Sgt. Scott R. Edmonds (and wife, Tahnna) of Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City, OK; a niece, Rebecca and nephew, Seth of Eden; a special friend, Wesley Martin of Eden.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hampton Heights Baptist Church and at other times will be at the home, 14709 N.C. Hwy 87 North in Eden.

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. - Lewis Elsworth Gauldin Jr., 47, formerly of Morristown, died Friday, May 10, 2002, in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Survivors include his mother, Patricia "Pat" Riggins of Talbott; one brother, Jeff Gauldin of Morristown; and sisters, Karen Webb of Morristown, and Kathy Archer of York Town, Va.
He was predeceased by his father, Bill Riggins and natural father, Jeff Gauldin Sr.; and half brother, L.E. Gauldin.
The funeral will be held 8 p.m. Wednesday at Westside Chapel with the Rev. Tom James officiating. The graveside service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Jefferson Memorial Gardens.

LEASBURG, N.C. - George Gunn Henderson Sr., 86 of 6789 Highway 158, died Monday evening at the Roxboro Nursing Center.
Born in Pittsylovania County, Va., he was the son of Raleigh Edger Henderson and Annie Manley Henderson.
He was married to Mildred Wade Henderson, who survives. He was a World War II Army veteran and was a member of the American Legion Post of Prospect Hill. He was retired from the Department of Transportation with over 32 years employment. He was active in the Leasburg United Methodist Church and had served as past usher and trustee.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one daughter, Mary Katherine "Kay" Price of Holly Springs; one son, George G. Henderson Jr. of Leasburg; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Roy Henderson of Yanceyville; and two sisters, Beulah Lester of Matthews, and Margaret Turner of Martinsville, Va.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Leasburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeannie Neal officiating. Interment will follow at Leasburg Community Cemetery.
