Dorothy Hutchins Hardy
DANVILLE, Va. - Dorothy Hutchins Hardy, 73, of 2909 Golf Club Road, died Septmber 3, 2002, at her residence after two years of declining health.
Born August 21, 1929, in Surry County, N.C., she was the daughter of Roby Lee Hutchins and Treaver Stanley Hutchins.
Mrs. Hardy has been residing in the Pittsylvania County since 1971 prior to living in Rockingham County. Prior to her retirement, she owned and operated Dots Fabric Shop where the making of dolls was her specialized talent. She was also an artist. She also served as a foster parent for numerous children while residing in Rockingham County. Mrs. Hardy was a member of the Mount Hermon Baptist Church and she was a homemaker.
She was married to Gerald Haynes, who died in 1960. She married her second husband, Norman L. Hardy on May 29, 1971.
Survivors include husband, Norman L. Hardy of the residence; two sons, G.L. Haynes, Jr. of Matterson, N.C. and Ed Haynes of Kernersville, N.C.; one daughter, Kathie Strader of Ruffin, N.C.; two step-sons, Jackie Hardy and Vic Hardy, both of Danville; one step-daughter, Sue Pace of Danville; one half-brother, Raymond Hutchins of Danville; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Hermon Baptist Church with the Reverend Don Davidson and the Reverend Richard DeHart officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family received friends 7:30-9 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and other times at the residence.

Nancy White
DANVILLE, Va. - The funeral for Nancy Rowland Hughey White, 95, of Roman Eagle Memorial Home will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday from The First Presbyterian Church Chapel by Rev. Charles Phillips and Rev. Cleon Ross. Private interment will be in Green Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Townes Funeral Home.
Mrs. White died Monday evening September 2, 2002. She has been in declining health for some years.
Born September 22, 1906 in Greenville, S.C., she was a daughter of John D. and Nan Rowland Hughey.
Brought up in Greenville, she graduated from the Greenville Women's College, now Furman University, with honors. After teaching in the public schools of Hendersonville, N.C., she graduated from Watts Hospital in Durham, N.C. She served at Memorial Hospital as a medical technologist, later working for a private medical doctor, then teaching in Pittsylvania County Schools. She joined her husband in the family business of Booth-White Sport Shop as Office Manager.
An active member of the First Presbyterian Church, she was awarded a life membership in the Presbyterian Women of the Church. She taught in the Sunday School and served on the Spiritual Life Commission. She was Camp Secretary of the Shrine Mont Camps Farthest Out, Orkney Springs Virginia. She held membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Predeceased by her husband, Burton Kirke White and a sister, Sara H. Jester, she is survived by a son, Burton Kirke White, Jr., and daughter-in-law Janet Snead White of Virginia Beach and Danville; three grandchildren, Anne Elizabeth White Reins of Norfolk, Nathan Asher White of Virginia Beach and Rebekah Ruth White of Richmond; and one great-grandchild, Raegen Taylor White of Virginia Beach.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Mission Fund.

Avery Johnson Wimbush
DANVILLE, Va. - Avery Johnson Wimbush, 36, of 460 Parker Road, Lot 103, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002 at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.
Born March 16, 1966, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Lettie Cleo Walton Wimbush and Fletcher Wimbush, who survives. He was employed by Schewel's Furniture Company.
In addition to his father and stepmother, Maracel W. Wimbush of Chatham, he is survived by one son, Quinton Saunders of Danville; one sister, Veronica Wimbush of Danville; and one brother, Fletcher Wimbush, Jr. of Gladys.
The family will receive friends at the home of his father, 5516 Strawberry Road, Chatham.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

Rev. Herman Lee Jefferson
PELHAM, N.C. - Rev. Herman Lee Jefferson, 51, of 2150 Old U.S. 29 Highway, died Wed., Sept. 4, 2002 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
Born June 12, 1951 in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was a son of the late James Alred Jefferson and Mary Hall Jefferson, who survives. He was married to Sheila Graves Jefferson.
He was an Associate Pastor of of the Silver Creek Baptist Church; and had been employed by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
In addition of his wife and mother, his survivors include: two daughters, Kristal Jefferson and Tinesha Jefferson of Danville, Va.; two sons, Corey Jefferson of Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas and Jeremy Jefferson of the residence; two sisters; Stella Gray and Mozelle Willard, both of Danville, Va.; three brothers, Stanford Jefferson and Alvin Jefferson,, both of Dry Fork, Va., and Roy Jefferson of Baltimore, Md. In addition, there are a host of other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 2150 Old U.S. Highway 29, Pelham.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Silver Creek Baptist Church by Rev. Booker George. Interment follows in the Highland Burial Park Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion Post 29 Honor Guard.

CHATHAM, Va. - Susie Page Carter, 92, of U.S. Route 29, died Thursday, September 5, 2002 at the Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born December 21, 1909, in Appomattox, Va., she was the daughter of Charlie Page and Gracie Bethel Page, both deceased.
She was a member of Banister Spring Primitive Baptist Church.
She is survived by one son, Roy Lee Carter of Chatham; five sisters, Gladys P. Carson of Farmville, Vernelle P. Bellon of Baltimore, Mary P. Deaner, Vera P. Pugh, and Agnes P. Wilkerson, all of Appomattox; two brothers, Charlie Page of Christiansburg and Ray Page of Appomattox; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Lee Carter; and one son, Lewis Ryland Carter.
The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Hillcrest Burial Park with Rev. Melvin Shelton officiating.

Cleary Slade Davis
DANVILLE, Va. - Cleary Slade Davis, 80, of 285 Beaver Drive, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at her residence.
Born Jan. 22, 1922, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Henry Slade and Jenny Graves Slade.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a cook at Surf Seafood and Ben's Place. She was a member of Sassafras Grove Baptist Church.
She was married to Jack Lewis Davis, who predeceased her.
She is survived by a sister, Ada Parrish of Danville; and a brother, Ross Slade of Danville.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl Bigelow officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

William (Billy) Garrett Dove Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - William (Billy) Garrett Dove Sr., of 4435 Westover Drive, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at his residence following a short decline in health.
Born Sept. 7, 1931, in Danville, he was the son of Charles Acree Dove and Ruth Anne Garrett Dove.
He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and was a past Deacon. He graduated from Brosville High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He owned and operated Dove Electric for the past 32 years.
He married Betty Meeks Dove on April 6, 1957.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two sons, William G. Dove Jr. of Danville and Richard N. Dove of the residence; two daughters, Cathy D. Harville and Amy D. Scearce, both of Danville; a sister, Anne D. Jones of Danville; and six grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Charles Acree Dove; and a granddaughter, Hannah Marie Dove.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Hillcrest Baptist Church with the Rev. Ross Range Sr. officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens with full military honors given by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post No. 325.

Peggie Miller Elliott
DANVILLE, Va. - Peggie Miller Elliott, 64, of 203 Haraway Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a battle with cancer for the past year and one week in the hospital.
Born April 6, 1938, in Washington County, she was the daughter of Harry Lee Miller and Cletus Nester Miller Dalton.
She had resided in Danville most of her life. She was employed by the Virginia Health Department in the Danville and Pittsylvania County office for many years prior to her retirement. She was an active member of North Main Baptist Church, serving on numerous committees, taught the Sonshine Sunday School class, was a worker with the church annual retreat program and a member of the choir.
She married B.C. Elliott on Feb. 28, 1976.
In addition to her husband of Danville, she is survived by six daughters, Cynthia Melton and husband Sherwood of Hurdle Mills, N.C., Cathy Cieslak and husband Joseph of Louisville, Ky., Kelly Peterson and husband Roy of Keeling, Christy Cain of Chilhowie, Carla Perkins and husband Jeff of Gretna and Carter Rae Tarwater and husband Scott of Houston, Texas; and nine grandchildren, Justin and Tyler Melton; Daniel, Elizabeth and Emily Cieslak; Isaac Peterson; Tucker Roark Cain; and Jesika and Casey Perkins.
The memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at North Main Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Deryl Holliday and the Rev. Dr. J. Leroy Clack officiating. The graveside service will be private.

Haywood 'Rabbit' Osborne
DANVILLE, Va. - Haywood "Rabbit" Osborne, 78, of Danville, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born June 25, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Alfred Osborne and Mollie Dalton Osborne.
He was retired from the Public Works Department of the City of Danville. He was a Merchant Marine and of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by two sons, Kenny Osborne and Keith Osborne, both of Danville; two daughters, Karen Wyatt of Danville and Kathy Barbour of Pittsville; four stepchildren, Nadine Pruitt, Shirley Hawkins, Jerry Barbour, all of Danville and Raymond Barbour of Pittsville; four brothers, David Osborne of Gretna, Curtis Osborne of Chatham, Roncie Osborne of Dry Fork and James Osborne of Chatham; three sisters, Isabell Tuck of Pittsville, Claire Crider of Richmond and Mary Paschal of Altavista; 18 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Elmer Compton Osborne; and four brothers, Charlie Osborne, Bobby Osborne, Joel Osborne and Bernard Osborne.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Colbert-Moran Chapel with the Rev. Robert Vermillion officiating. Interment will follow in the Osborne Family Cemetery.

EDEN, N.C. - Virginia Nelson Rorrer, 83, formerly of Moir St., died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at Yanceyville Brian Center.
She was born in Rockingham County and was a member of First Church of the Brethen. She was retired from Fieldcrest Mills.
She was married to Clifford Rorrer, who predeceased her.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda Cox of Wilmington; two sons, Kinney Rorrer of Danville, Va. and Doug Rorrer of Eden; four sisters, Lucy Johnson, Janie Wall, both of Eden, Dora Lee Vernon of Hollywood, Fla. and Peggy Broznick of Cannonsburg, Pa.; two brothers, Wayne Nelson of Mayodan and Orie Nelson of Eden; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Fred Nelson and Carl Nelson; and a sister, Ruby Atkins.

RINGGOLD, Va. - Viola Owen Shelton, 99, formerly of Tom Ford Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home in Danville.
Born June 10, 1903, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Jim Owen and Georgie Anna Crane Owen.
She was a homemaker and a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.
She was married to Elison Butler Shelton, who predeceased her Dec. 7, 1991.
She is survived by a son, Bernard B. Shelton Sr. of Danville; a brother, Richard Owen of Danville; four sisters, Irene O. Yeatts, Anna O. Hayden, both of Danville, Selma Murphy of Lynchburg and Janie Shields of Danville; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Alise S. Rowland; an infant son; four brothers and two sisters.
