Jacob Yospin

Jacob "Jake" Yospin, 95, of Amelia, formerly of Elizabeth, N.J., died Thursday at Henrico Doctors' Hospital.

He was associated with the family business, Samuel Yospin & Sons, Paint & Wallpapers Store, Elizabeth, N.J., for 50 years, retiring in 1975. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Alexian Brothers Hospital, Elizabeth, N.J., Gomel Chesed Cemetery Assoc. and YM-YWHA of Union Co., N.J. He was past president of the New Jersey Paint Dealers Assoc. and the Mens Club of Temple B'nai Israel, Elizabeth, N.J.

He was a member of the Lions Club, Rotary Club, Elizabeth Lodge of Elks, Urban League, Jewish Family Service Agency and Jewish Federation of Central New Jersey; chairman of Merchants Division of United Way of Union Co., N.J.; and master mason of Azure-Masada Lodge 22, F&AM, Cranford, N.J. He was a volunteer at Delray Beach Hospital until he was 93 years old and was honored for 1000 hours of volunteer service. Born in Brooklyn, he lived in Elizabeth most of his life and moved to Delray Beach, Fla. in 1979 and to Virginia last year.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Dorothy; daughter, Lois Weiss of Manalapan, N.J.; son, Jerry Yospin of Amelia; sisters, Theodora Deneroff of Maryland, and Elizabeth Feldman; brothers, Herman and Robert Yospin, all of New Jersey; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to American Parkinson's Assoc., 1250 Hylan Blvd., Staten Island, N.Y. 10305, or your favorite charity.

Ethel Clarke Woodson

Ethel Clarke Woodson, age 77, of Powhatan, departed this life January 5, 2002, at Johnston-Willis Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John "Dutch" Woodson; and son, James Woodson. She is survived by four daughters, Sharlene (Clarence) Hieskill, Gail (Earl) Freeman, Sharon Williams and Brenda Woodson; three sons, John Woodson, Dr. Lawrence (Cynthia) Woodson and Larry (Tammie) Woodson; 10 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Horace Woodson of Queens, N.Y. She is also survived by one devoted aunt, Mrs. Sallie Harris; and a host of other relatives and friends, devoted among them, Mrs. Pearl Ross, Mrs. Frances Taylor, Mr. Bobby Clarke, Ms. Mildred Lee and a loving caregiver, Mrs. Margaret Woodson.

Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts. Funeral services will be held, Thursday, January 10, 2002, 1 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 2020 Red Lane, Powhatan, Va., Rev. Charles Kirby, pastor and eulogy by Rev. Revell Hicks. Interment in Hollywood Baptist Church Cemetery. Remains will rest in above named church one hour prior to service. Relatives and friends attending assemble at the church Thursday 12:30 p.m.

Ruby Duty Clark

Ruby Duty Clark, 70, of Powhatan, died January 6, 2002.

She is survived by one son, William "Sonny" Johnson of Powhatan; two daughters, Joan Corbitt of Powhatan and Diane Cook of Amelia; one brother, Otis Duty of Chesterfield; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and a devoted friend, William Johnson.

The family receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rt. 60), Powhatan, and where services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday. Interment Powhatan Community Cemetery.

Beatrice M. Benner

Beatrice M. Benner, 89, of Powhatan, died January 8, 2002.

She is survived by her husband, Charles W. Benner; two daughters, Annie B. Pettway and Rosemary B. Jones, both of Powhatan; seven grandchildren, Patricia Davis, Loretta Blevins, Cindy Hazelwood, Mark Pettway, Matthew Pettway, Connie Gentry and Sherry Collins; nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rt 60), Powhatan, where services will be held 2 p.m. Friday. Interment Maury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Powhatan Volunteer Rescue Squad or the Alzheimer's Association, 4600 Cox Rd. Suite 130, Glen Allen, Va. 23060.

Wilfred Ewell Stokes Sr.

Wilfred Ewell "Mr. Wilfred" Stokes Sr. finished his earthly journey January 8, 2002.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lucy Stokes; a son and his wife, W.E. "Buddy" and Kay Lucas Stokes Jr. of Powhatan; a daughter, Sue Stokes Clark of Midlothian; three brothers, Garland Stokes of Powhatan, Sydney Stokes and his wife, Evelyn Lee of Ballsville, Stuart Stokes and his wife, June of Richmond; a sister, Ruth Boatwright and her husband, Freddie of Powhatan; four grandchildren, Brandon Clark, Rachel C. Kneessi, Katy Stokes and Kelly Stokes; three great-grandchildren, Dustin Clark, Noah Kneessi and Reagan Clark. Mr. Stokes was the founder and past president of Stokes Saw Service.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rt. 60), Powhatan. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday in the Muddy Creek Baptist Church, Powhatan. Interment church cemetery.

William Henderson Stratton

William HendersonStratton, 62, of Powhatan, a dairy farmer, husband of Lillie Mae Stratton, passed away January 10, 2002.

Walter Ray Sexton

Walter Ray Sexton, 69, of Richmond, died January 11, 2002.

He is survived by his two sons, William Ray of Midlothian, and Walter Ray Jr. of Rock Hill, S.C.; two daughters, Anita Farnsworth of Amelia, and Christina Sexton of Dallas, Texas; his brothers, Raymond of Oklahoma, David of Amelia, Oliver of Chesterfield; his sisters, Pearl Durdue of Fresno, Calif., Virgie Barden of Powhatan, Deckie Wilkerson of Powhatan, Dorothy Jaciuk of Ashland, Agnes Reams of Amelia; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Claude and Arvil Sexton; and sister, Lorraine Lowery. Services will be held at Piedmont Baptist Church, Amelia, on Wednesday, January 16, 2 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Piedmont Baptist Church, Amelia, Va.

Zeph Eldridge Garthright

Zeph (Sugar) Eldridge Garthright, 70, of Powhatan, went to be with the Lord January 12, 2002.
Mr. Garthright was one of the founders of Flippen and Garthright Sheetmetal Contractors, a career he passed on to his sons which now operates as Powhatan Maintenance Contractors. He is survived by his wife, Denise; children, David Howell and his wife, Cindy, Dee Dee (Sissy) Brooks, Lynne Mawyer, Peggy Love, and Zeph (Sugar) Garthright Jr. and his wife, Diana, and Donna Case and her husband, Heath; three sisters, Carolyn Carter and her husband, Bill, Barbara Farrell and her husband, Dennis, and Margaret Daniel; and ten grandchildren, Josh, Alex, Emily, Dustin, Dylan, Bucky, Jennifer, Jamie, Zeth III and Cierra.

Throughout his years, he was gracious and giving to others who were in need. Sugar was an avid fan of auto racing as well as a sponsor, owner and driver. He was an animal lover and will be greatly missed by his Yorkies, Crissy, Sassy and Ben. He proudly served in the Marine Corps and Air Force with great honor, and loved to spend time with his family.

His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends Monday, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday. Interment Dale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society or the American Cancer Society. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his friends and loved ones. He did it his way.

Willis Anderson King

Willis Anderson King, 78, of Amelia, died January 13, 2002.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace B. King. He is survived by two daughters, Patricia Gayle Anderson and Deborah Kay Pickett; three brothers, Herbert, Fletcher and Weldon King; a sister, Lelia Mae Gills; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren. Mr. King was a retired employee of Talley Neon and founder of Outdoor Advertising.

His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd., where the family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, and where funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park.

Joseph Wilbur Harver Sr.

Joseph Wilbur Harver Sr. of Richmond died January 14, 2002.

A son, Ricky S. Harver, preceded him in death. He is survived by two sons, Joseph W. Jr. of Amelia, Va. and William Ed of Parksburg, Pa.; one daughter, Charlotte Royall of Quinton, Va.; three brothers, William A. of Blackstone, Va., Curtis L. of Richmond, Va. and Norman F. of Amelia, Va.; two sisters, Laverne King of Richmond, Va. and Margaret Webb of Amelia, Va.

Mr. Harver was a member of the Westhampton Masonic Lodge No. 302 AF&AM, the Richmond Scottish Rite Bodies, the Grottos and the Acca Temple Shrine, and was a veteran of WWII.

His remains rest at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and where a Masonic Service will be held at 7 p.m. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Amelia Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Amelia, Va. Memorial contributions may be made to Children's Hospital.

Thelma Hastings Cheatham

Thelma Hastings Cheatham, age 85, of Moseley, died on January 16, 2002.

She is survived by her daughter, Flora C. Cosby of Moseley; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Predeceased by her husband, Joseph D. Sr.; her son, Joseph D. Jr.; and her daughter, Myrtle Horst.

Funeral services Saturday 1 p.m. at Skinquater Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Visiting at the Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home, 16409 Court St. Amelia, 7-9 p.m. on Friday.

Carl Creasy

Carl Edwin Creasy, age 57, of Jetersville, died on Wednesday, January 16, 2002.

He is survived by his wife, Janet; stepsons, Charles Creasy of Jetersville, James R. Parrish of Amelia and Donald Ray Mayhew of Lynchburg; stepdaughter, Phyllis Ballinger of Jetersville; brother, Donald Creasy of Lynchburg, and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Monday from 7-9 p.m. at the Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home, 16409 Court St. A chapel service will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 22, at the funeral home with burial in the Virginia Veterans Cemetery. He was a scoutmaster with the Amelia Troop of BSA.

Donald R. Blankenship Sr.

Donald R. Blankenship Sr., age 81, of Jetersville, went to be with the Lord on January 17, 2002.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Annie V. Blankenship; his daughters, Joyce Asbury of Newport News, VA, Ola Kuske of Limestone, TN, Brenda McMillion of Amelia, Debby Little of Jetersville, and Dianne Banton of Lunenburg; son, Donald Blankenship Jr. of Jetersville; his sisters, Helen Tucker of Charles City and Ruth Wright of Newport News; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and good friends.

A memorial service will be held at Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home 2 p.m. Sunday. Interment private.

Clinton Earl Turner

Clinton Earl Turner, 68, of Powhatan, died January 18, 2002.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Audra J. Turner, and is survived by his daughter, Lora T. Beck and her husband, Russ; sister, Marie T. Utley; brother, Rev. Donald A. Turner; half brother, Ronald L. Mason; grandchildren, Stacy M. Beck and Arby Beck. Mr. Turner was a member of the Order of the Moose, the Ruritan, J.C. Penney retiree, and former employee of C & O Railroad.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10). His funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Interment in Maury Cemetery.

Braxton C. Booker

Braxton C. "Peaches" Booker, age 78, of Mannboro, entered into eternal life at his residence Saturday, January 20, 2002.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Pearl Campbell Booker; daughter, Nannie "Cookie" Ross of Mannboro; sons, Braxton Jr. and Arthur (Deborah) of Blackstone, Richard (Maria) of Chesterfield and Leonard Booker (Karau) of Tokyo, Japan; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; sisters, Beatrice Royal and Emily Royal, both of Mannboro; nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services Wednesday 1 p.m., Branches Runn Baptist Church, Mannboro, with burial in the Manassas Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Rev. C.L. Turner eulogist. Arrangements by V.Y. Scott Funeral Home, Hwy. 360E, Amelia.

James Blaine Cole

James Blaine "Jimmy" Cole, 89, of Chesterfield and formerly of Powhatan, died January 22, 2002.

Jimmy was born January 19, 1913 in Chandler, N.C., the son of James Riley and Myrtle Davis Cole. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Georgia Williams Cole; his foster son, John Gilbert Brooke; his sister, Mildred Fick; and his brother, Turner Allen Cole. Jimmy worked as an engineer for the Atlantic Coast Line before establishing his own business, Chesterfield Mobile Homes. Formerly a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church, he will be remembered as having an avid interest in Civil War history, the stock market, gardening, bird watching and trains. He was also a great admirer of Ronald Reagan.

Surviving are daughters, Joan Peters-Dolezal and her husband, Frank of Richmond, Susan Moore and her husband, Bill of Reidsville, N.C.; and son, Frank and his wife, Ellen of Powhatan. Also surviving are grandchildren, Laura Blaine Peters, Frederick Hamilton Peters III and his wife, Michelle, William Benjamin Moore III, Rosemary Riley Moore, James Frank Cole Jr., John Price Cole and Jesse Thomas Cole; and great-grandchildren, Austin Todd Padgett and Abigail Blaine Peters.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, January 26 at 2 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Hodges Manor, 410 Adkins Rd., Richmond, Va. 23236. Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, handling arrangements.
