Thomas C. Burton, 78, of Amelia, died on August 3, 2001.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary. He is survived by his daughters Mary Ann and Linda Jane Burton, both of Amelia, and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Monday at 11:30 a.m. in Union Baptist Cemetery. Visitation took place Sunday from 2-4 and 7-8:30 at the Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home, 16409 Court St. Amelia. Contributions may be made to the Amelia Rescue Squad, Fire Dept., Kidney Foundation, or a charity of your choice.
Robert L. Evans, Jr.
Robert L. Evans, Jr., 69, of Amelia died on August 3, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Irma Sue; sons, Ricky of Richmond, and Phillip; daughters, Linda Lunsford and Gloria Parrish, all of Amelia; and Kathy Rose of Richmond; sister, Bertha Duram of North Carolina; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Evans was a member of Teamsters Local 592 and had worked for A&P and B& P Trucking.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 9605 Wayside Ave. in Amelia, with burial in Mattoax Cemetery. Visiting will take place at the church from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Sunday. Contributions may be made to the Amelia Rescue Squad. Arrangements by the Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home.
Nick Ellington Oakley
Nick Ellington Oakley, 13, of Powhatan, died August 10, 2001.
He is survived by his grandparents, Robert and Paulette Ellington of Powhatan; his mother, Patricia Oakley; one brother, Anthony Collins, both of Richmond; and a devoted friend, Sylvia Gillenwater of Powhatan.
The family will receive friends Sunday night from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rt. 60), Powhatan. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Red Lane Baptist Church, Powhatan. Interment church cemetery.
T. Lewis Morris
T. Lewis Morris, age 84, of Amelia, died August 12, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Velmaleen Puryear Morris; his son, Sam; granddaughters, Bekki and Beth; and grandson, Sammy; stepsons, Johnny, Barry and Mark Puryear; stepdaughter, Becky Watson; nine step-granchildren, two step-great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours are Monday, 7 to 9 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Amelia, with the service Tuesday, 11 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, with interment at Amelia Presbyterian Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund. Hillsman Hix Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
Louise Lillie Oakley Shead
Louise Lillie Oakley Shead, 87, of Powhatan, went to be with the Lord August 15, 2001.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George D. Shead; and her first husband, Walter E. Cordle. She is survived by three daughters, Betty C. Jarratt of Powhatan, Dorothy C. Lewis and her husband, H.B. of Saxis, Va. and Nancy C. Cumbea and her husband, Herbert W. of Powhatan; grandchildren, Walter A. Baugh of Richmond, William E. Baugh of Chesterfield, Mary Bixler of Amelia, B.J. Baugh of Powhatan, Tommy Baugh of Farmville, William Crowder of Charlottesville, Michael Crowder of Nokesville, Jeff Cumbea of Buckingham and Lynn Blevins of Powhatan; 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Nettie Reams of Richmond, Maxine Bennett of Delaware, Joyce James of Richmond, Phyllis Conway of Delaware and Mary Ann Baldwin of Richmond.
Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and where a funeral service will be held 12:30 p.m. Friday. Interment in Maury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Virginia.
Roy William Jackson Sr.
Roy William Jackson Sr., age 74, of Powhatan, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, August 18, 2001 in Richmond, Va.
He is survived by a son, Roy W. Jackson Jr.; two daughters, Florence Carrington and Barbara Jackson; seven grandchildren, seven brothers, eight sisters, four aunts, one son-in-law, three sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
His remains rest at Marian Gray Thomas Funeral Home of Cumberland, Va. Funeral services will be held Thursday, 2 p.m., at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Powhatan. Rev. James Robinson, Pastor, Rev. Revell Hicks officiating with interment in the church cemetery.

Eula Smith Averette, 84, of Chase City, died August 19, 2001.
She was retired from Lake Sleepwear and a member of First Baptist Church. She was the widow of Robert Averette and is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Grandon and Ruth Anne Averette, Amelia; David and Connie Averette, Chesterfield; brothers, D.O. Smith Jr.; Chase City; Herndon H. Smith, Hopewell; sister, Mary Cunningham, Chesterfield; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren.

William Douglas Evans, age 76, of Powhatan, Va., quietly slipped into eternal rest at Johnston-Willis Hospital on Monday, August 20, 2001.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Lucille Evans; four daughters, Grace Browne, Diane Evans, Pauline Ross and Cynthia Johnson (Henry); one son, Charles Evans (Shirley); four devoted grandsons, seven devoted granddaughters, five great-granddaughters; one great-grandson, Master Devin Burgess; a brother, Alfred Evans (Margaret); four sisters-in-law, Ethel Randolph, Lois Williams, Mozelle Johnson (George) and Minnie Trent; 13 nieces and nephews, several great-nieces and nephews; cousins, two devoted, John and Mary Agnes Langhorne and family; friends, one devoted, Porter Smith.
His remains rest at Marian Gray Thomas Funeral Home of Cumberland, Va. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 24, 2001, 12 noon at the Powhatan Village Building, Powhatan, Va. Rev. James T. Lina May Lickey Cooper Murphey
Lina May (Lindy) Lickey Cooper Murphey, 75 years of age. Born April 4, 1926 in Fruitland, Idaho. Precious loving wife and mother went home to be with the Lord on August 20, 2001.
She is survived by her loving husband, Richard Sherwood Murphey; children, Lynn Evans (Mrs. Daniel W.), Sherman McDaniel (Mrs. James, 5th), Cynthia Walton (Mrs. Jeffrey A.), Michael Cooper (wife, Vanessa), Patrick Cooper (wife, Rita), Margaret Nygaard (Mrs. James C.); stepchildren: Patricia Simmons (Mrs. Jim), Leon Murphey (wife, Ann), Allen Murphey (wife, Judy) and foster daughter Kimberly Jeter. Also survived by two brothers: Arlington Lickey of Victoria, Va., and William H. Lickey of Florida; and sister Esther Pulley (Mrs. I. H., Jr.) of Maynard, Ar., 17 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by beloved husband Samuel Stearns Cooper and beloved grandson James Carter Nygaard. Murphey was retired from the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. She was a long-time resident of Highland Springs and a member of New Bridge Baptist Church. She formerly resided in Victoria, VA.
Funeral services will take place Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Woody's Funeral Home, 2110 East Laburnum Ave., with burial at 2 p.m. at Union Baptist Church Cemetery in Amelia County. Iven Martin Cole
Iven Martin Cole, CDR, USNR (ret.) and an American Airlines Captain, passed away suddenly at his residence, "Journey's End" in Powhatan August 21, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Ellen Cole; his son, Michael Cole. He was the son of Shirley Stonnell Cole and the late Hugh T. Cole Jr. Also surviving are five brothers, Taylor, Rick, David, Billy and John Cole; two sisters, Suzanne Tompkins and Sandy Nelms; many nieces and nephews and friends from all over the country. Iven was a 1971 graduate of University of Virginia.
He was a Navy veteran assigned as a P-3 "Orion" pilot in the Pacific. He was a member of Navy Reserve Squadron VP-68 and retired with twenty-one years of service. He was a Super 80 Captain with 23 years of service with American Airlines. Iven's love of family and the university is somewhat legendary. UVA has lost one of it's most avid fans as Iven traveled near and far to cheer on his beloved "Wahoos." His family has lost a husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend who will be sorely missed. Iven was also a member of the American Legion, Fleet Reserve Assoc., VP-68 Alumni Assoc., Tailhook Assoc., Powhatan Moose Lodge #1840, Virginia Student Aid Foundation, Virginia Alumni Assoc., a life long member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and a member of the Vestry and served as Sr. Warden for one term.
The family will receive friends Friday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church Parrish House, 2245 Huguenot Trail Rd., Powhatan. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in the St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Interment church cemetery. James Austin Grant, 60, of Chesterfield County, died Thursday, August 30, 2001.
He is survived by two daughters, Kathy Emerson of Amelia and Jamie Grant of Chesterfield; a son, James A. "Jimmy" Grant Jr. of Chesterfield; a stepson, Ricky Brooks of Dinwiddie; a grandson, Matthew Austin Emerson; three sisters, Ruby B. Mayton of Baskerville, Eleanor Hudson of Blackstone and Jackie Lloyd of Church Road; two brothers, George W. Grant of Blackstone and C.B. Grant of Richmond. He was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters.
Chapel funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2 at the Hamner-McMillian Funeral Home in Blackstone. Burial followed in Jonesboro Baptist Church Cemetery.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Herman Jr. and Betty Combs, Tommy and Betsy Combs, all of Powhatan; two daughters, Kay and her husband, Dave Clark of Powhatan, Shirley Bowman of Florida; two sisters, 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and a devoted friend, Courtney Hardy.

Lois Allen Marshall, age 88, of Amelia, died Tuesday, February 5, 2002.
She was the widow of Richard A. Marshall Jr. and is survived by a son, Larry W. Marshall of Amelia; a granddaughter, Rian Marshall; and grandson, Matthew Marshall, both of Chesterfield.

She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Sheila M. and Lucky Darnell Hill of Natural Bridge Station; granddaughter, Gemelle L. Hill of Powhatan; grandson, Shannon D. Hill of Henrico; and one brother, Stan Wright of Georgia.

A beloved son and brother, Mark Winston Paul, 38, of Powhatan, died January 31, 2002.
He is survived by his parents, Bette Jo and Ralph E. Paul; two sisters and their husbands, Terry and Neil Sherman, Tracy and Paul Christman.
He was a loving and cherished uncle to his niece and two nephews. His family and friends will remember his generosity of spirit and love of life. Mark was an active member and Sunday school teacher of Open Door Baptist Church.
