Aubrey Sydnor Dodson

Aubrey Sydnor Dodson, 82, of Pearisburg, Va., died Thursday, June 26, 2003.

Funeral services were held Sunday, June 29, at 2 p.m. at the Sheffey Memorial United Methodist Church in Staffordsville, Va., with the Rev. Henry Dodson of Lynchburg, Va., officiating. Interment was in the Birchlawn Cemetery, Pearisburg, Va.

He received his formal education from Hampden-Sydney College, Randolph Macon, Lynchburg College, Notre Dame University, and the University of Richmond, School of Law. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, governor of Ruritans, member of the International Order of Odd Fellows, on the Board of Trustees of Sheffey Memorial United Methodist Church, New River Valley Planning Commission, chairman of the Files County Board of Supervisors, and member of the American Legion. He went to Giles County, Va., in 1946, as a sanitary engineer with the Virginia State Health Department. He met Irene Parcell in Trigg, Va., and they married shortly after meeting. He was the owner of the Holiday Motor Lodge and the founder of the Dodson Realty Company. He was a licensed appraiser and broker for Virginia and West Virginia, where he and his daughter, Connie, worked together for 25 years. He attended Sheffey Memorial United Methodist Church in Staffordsville, Va., for 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Sydnor Dodson and Hallie Turpin Holland Dodson; brothers, Albert "Jack" Dodson, Frank Dodson, Harry Dodson, Robert Dodson, Malcom Dodson, Arthur Dodson, Bert Dodson, and William Edward Dodson; and a sister, Connie Kolden.

Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Connie Jean Dodson "Miss Conn" and Audrey Sue Dodson-Walter "Santa" and Gary Walker, all of Giles County, Va.; two grandsons, Samuel Robertson of Newport Beach, Calif., and James Robertson of Fairfax, Va.; one granddaughter and her spouse, Dommetae and Tyler Jarrells of Pearisburg, Va.; two great-grandchildren, Brittney Jarrells and Tyler Jarrells; and his friend, Gladys Parcell of Salem, Va.

Goldie Jane Hamilton Gordon

Goldie Jane Hamilton Gordon, 102, of the Mechanicsburg section of Bland County, Va., died Sunday, June 29, 2003, in Asbury Place, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 2, at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home, White Gate, Va., with the Rev. Donald White officiating. Interment will be in the Mechanicsburg Community Cemetery.

Before her seven-month stay at Asbury Place, she was a lifetime resident of the Mechanicsburg section of Bland County, Va. She was born Oct. 3, 1900. She was a member of the Byrnes Chapel United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Thomas Gordon; her parents, Saunders Moore Hamilton and Sally Ann Mustard Hamilton; an infant daughter, Anna Lee Gordon; and a son and daughter-in-law, Donald Frederick Gordon and Nell Virginia Franklin Gordon.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Douglas Lee and Nedde Irene Hounshell Gordon of the family home; grandchildren and their spouses, Michael Don Gordon of Keokuk, Iowa, Terry Stephen and Sharon Strock Gordon, Douglas Lee Gordon II, and Andrea Jane Gordon, all of Mechanicsburg, Va., Laura Evelyn Gordon Harkey and Jonathan Lee Harkey of Macon, Ga., and Robert Thomas Gordon of Roanoke, Va.; two great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, July 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home.

William Franklin Ring

William Franklin Ring, 68, of Bastian, died Sunday, June 29, 2003.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, July 3, at 2 p.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery in Bastian, Va., with the Rev. Lee McIntosh and the Rev. Paul Looney officiating. Full military honors will be conducted.

He has lived in Bastian, Va. for the past 25 years. He was a member of the Bastian Union Church and a member of the V.F.W. Post 7969. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Gerlie Mae Ring; a stepfather, Noah R. Hopkins; two brothers, Robert D. Ring and James L. Ring.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley C. Ring; two sons, Robin "Butch" Malmberg of Mt. Vernon, Va., and Ron Malmberg of Bland, Va.; two daughters, Brenda Crain of Albuquerque, N.M., and Renee Schultz of Bastian, Va.; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a close family friend, Charlie Delph of Alexandria, Va.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 2, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home in Bland, Va.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bland County Volunteer Rescue Squad, Bland, VA 24315; or to Hospice of Southwest Virginia, 600 W. Ridge Road, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Wanda Enola Croy Boothe

Wanda Enola Croy Boothe, 76, of the Kimberling section of Bland County, Va., died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at the home of her sister, Thelma Smith of Wytheville, Va., after a battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 27, at 7 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, Va., with the Rev. Donald White and the Rev. Frank Clifton officiating. Burial will be Saturday, June 28, at 11 a.m. in the Grandview Memory Garden Cemetery on the Bluefield/Tazewell Road. Those planning to attend the burial services are asked to meet at the cemetery at 11 a.m.

She was born July 12, 1926, in Alabam, Ark. She grew up and lived most of her life in Bland County, Va., working in Bluefield, Va., and retiring from Tultex in Bastian, Va. She was a longtime member of Salem United Methodist Church in Kimberling section of Bland County, Va. She had been the treasurer for many years and was the adult Sunday school teacher, having served in this position since 1985.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William M. and Lillie Morehead Croy; a brother, William Lowell Croy; a stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Frances Boothe and Estel Singleton; a stepson-in-law, Jimmy Johnson; a stepgranddaughter, Veronica Lynn "Vicky" Richard.

Survivors include her husband, James "Jim" Otis Boothe of the home; a sister and brother-in-law, Thelma Croy and H.L. Smith of Wytheville, Va.; a nephew, Ronnie Gene Croy of Iowa; four nieces, Frieda Smith Jeffers of Cockeysville, Md., Belinda Smith Motley of Manassas, Va., Adina Croy serving in the Navy, and Willie Sue Croy Wolfe of Bastian, Va.; a stepdaughter, Mattie Boothe Johnson of Weirton, W.Va.; four stepgranddaughters, Kimberly "Kim" Huffman, Rosa "Elaine" Olshenski, Jamie Johnson and Mattie Michelle "Buffy" Scicchitano; two stepgrandsons, Estel "Junior" Singleton Jr. and James Michael "Mike" Singleton; and great-nieces and great-nephews, Tracy Werner, Scott Werner, Emma Werner, Heather Longley, John Longley, Michael Denholm, Jackie Denholm, Christopher Denholm, Nathan Wolfe and Aaron Wolfe.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Bland County Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 585, Bland, VA 24315; or to the Salem United Methodist Church, Route 1, Bland, VA 24315 in care of Sandra Burton.

G. McNutt "Mac" Muncy, 79, of Fort Washington, Md., formerly of Bland County, Va., died Thursday, June 26, 2003.

Ima Rae Burkett Pearson, 72, of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2003, on Flight No. 5481 at Douglas International Airport, Charlotte, N.C.

A memorial service was held Monday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m. at the Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church, North Myrtle Beach, S.C., with the Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Carlisle and the Rev. Robert Emory officiating. A funeral service was held Saturday, Jan. 18, at Calvary Baptist Church, Ware Shoals, S.C., with the Rev. Robert Emory officiating. Burial was in Greenville Memorial Gardens, Greenville, S.C.

She was born in Bluefield, W.Va., a daughter of the late Phillip and Marie Givins Burkett. She was a nurse anesthetist for 27 years at the Shriners Hospital in Greenville, S.C. She was a member of Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church, North Myrtle Beach, S.C., where she served several organizations.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence Frederick "Larry" III and Lana Pearson of Carlisle, Penn.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Carol Elizabeth Pearson and Alan Todd of Barstow, Calif., and Paula Rae Pearson of Ware Shoals, S.C.; one sister, Loretta Grimes of Rocky Gap, Va.; six grandchildren, Heath Pearson and Laura Pearson, both of Carlisle, Penn., David Todd, John Todd, Ashley Todd and Vanessa Todd, all of Barstow, Calif.; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

Elizabeth Mandaleen Smith Wills

Elizabeth Mandaleen Smith Wills, 66, of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 2 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va. Interment to be in the Bethany Lutheran Cemetery.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Norman "Coon" and Rosa Hoback Smith; and one brother, Rudolph Smith.

Survivors include husband, Charles "Mickey" Wills of Bastian, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Damon O. "Danny" Jr. and Debbie Rosenbaum of Cripple Creek, Va., and Timothy and Cynthia Rosenbaum of Wytheville, Va.; one sister and brother-in-law, Sissy and Bob Dickerson of Max Meadows, Va.; three grandchildren, Danielle Rosenbaum of Norfolk, Va., Jacob Rosenbaum of Cripple Creek, Va., and Kevin Gillman of Fayetteville, N.C.; and three great grandchildren.

Marvin Lewis Hayton

Marvin Lewis Hayton, 76, of Speedwell, Va., died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 31, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Doug Stuart and the Rev. Scott Adkins. Interment will be in the Groseclose Chapel Cemetery. The American Legion Post No. 9 will conduct military graveside rites.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and he was retired from the American Screw Company.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James C. and Nina Williams Hayton.

Survivors include his wife, Edna Whalen Hayton of Speedwell, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Joseph Daryl and Barb Hayton of Speedwell, Va.; brothers and sister-in-law, Thomas Andrew and Betty Hayton of Marion, Va., and James Cleveland Hayton Jr. of Ceres, Va.; sister-in-law, Felicia Hayton of Ceres, Va.; grandchildren, Ashley Hayton, Mikey Auxer, both of Speedwell, Va., and Brian Schmitt of Pennsylvania.

Martha Saunders Cobb, 82, of Rocky Gap died Friday, March 28, 2003.

Oscar Kenneth James Stanley, 73, of Max Meadows, Va., died Saturday, March 8, 2003, at his home after a long illness with cancer.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 11, at 2 p.m. at the Jubilee Baptist Church with the Rev. Kelly Marshall officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

He was born Oct. 26, 1929, at Hollybrook, Va., a son of the late Charlie William and Lillie Ellen Dalton Stanley. He was the youngest son of 15 children.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Frost Stanley; three daughters and a son-in-law, Carol Frost of the home, Edith Lineberry of Dublin, Va., and Janet and Bobby Ratcliffe of Pearisburg, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Karen Stanley of Pembroke, Va.; a stepdaughter, Mary Ann Shelton of Wilmington, N.C.; two stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law, Freddie Lee and Susan Frost of Charlotte, N.C., and Tommy Gilmer and Amanda Frost of Fredericksburg, Va.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, Daniel Stanley of Bland, Va.; a sister, Virginia Hazel Branham of Pulaski, Va.; and a special niece and nephew, Lou Ann and Allen Branham of Pulaski, Va.

Mary Lee Williams, 73, of Cleveland, Tenn., died Friday, March 7, 2003, in a healthcare facility.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 10, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Ralph Buckner Funeral Home, Cleveland, Tenn., with the Rev. Doug Armstrong officiating. Interment was in Tasso United Methodist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Rocky Gap, Va., and had lived in the Cleveland, Tenn., area for the past 25 years. She attended the Chestuee United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Williams; her parents, Ballard and Eula Mae Stowers; and one sister, Brizendine Stowers.

Survivors include four children and their spouses, Donna and Dale Wyrick of Gate City, Va., Kathy and Robert Killian of Ocoee, Tenn., Vicky and Steve Clark, and Ronald Williams, all of Cleveland, Tenn.; four grandchildren, James Lundy, Deborah Wyrick, David Wyrick and Bryan Killian; two great-grandchildren, Briana Lundy and Dixie Lundy; three sisters, Freda Williams and Nancy Gilpin, both of Rocky Gap, Va., and Judy Grubb of Bluefield, Va.; two brothers, Howard Stowers of Rocky Gap, Va., and Jim Stowers of Bluefield, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Herbert Carl Farlow, 68, of Radford, Va., formerly of Bland County, Va., died Sunday, June 29, 2003.

Funeral services were Thursday, July 3, at DeVilbiss Funeral Home Chapel, Radford, Va. with Pastor Jerry Gibson officiating. Interment was in Highland Memory Gardens.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Edna Farlow.

Survivors include his wife, Betty L. Sharon Maria Romano Meadows, 52, of Bland, Va., died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at her home.

A rosary service will be held Wednesday, Aug. 13, at 8:15 p.m. at Grubb Funeral Home. Funeral mass will be held Thursday, Aug. 14, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Wytheville, conducted by Father Rene Castillo. Interment will be in the Roselawn Cemetery, Princeton, W.Va. approximately at 1 p.m.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Jim and Adeline Romano and Jim and Ethel Janutolo.

Survivors include her husband, Ralph Lee Meadows Jr. of Bland, Va.; four children and their spouses, Jenny and Chris Mishoe of Christiansburg, Va., Stephanie and Mark Shropshire of Old Saybrook, Conn, Ralph Lee Meadows III, and Joseph Brian Meadows, both of Bland, Va.; her parents, Joseph A. and Hila J. Romano of Bland, Va.; one sister and three brothers and spouses, Vince and Denise Romano, Bridget and Mark Sarver, Tim and Sharon Romano, all of Bland, Va., and Kevin and Charlene Romano of Winchester, Va.; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Lillian and Garland Ragan; a granddaughter, Anna Kathryn Mishoe; and several nieces and nephews.

Elmer Shell "Bub" Stuart, 72, of Ceres, Va., died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Nov. 9, at 6 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, Va., with the Rev. Tom Oliphant and Pastor Jim Conley officiating. Interment will be private.

He was born Oct. 27, 1930, at Mechanicsburg, Va., a son of the late Ed and Reba Melvin Stuart. He was a past governor of the Ceres Ruritan Club and a member of the Mechanicsburg Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Dare Neel Stuart of Ceres, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert E. and Tamela Stuart of Mechanicsburg, Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, Judi K. Stuart and Stan Wellford of Mechanicsville, Va.; a brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Clara Stuart of Ashland, Va.; a sister, Nell S. Morehead of Mechanicsburg, Va.; a sister-in-law, Shirley N. Repass of Wytheville, Va.; three grandchildren, Hunter Stuart, Kendell Stuart and Sarah Wellford; and several nieces and nephews.

Bobby Stanford Hylton

Bobby Stanford Hylton, 69, of Princeton, W.Va., and formerly of Bland, Va., died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, in a farming accident in Bland, Va.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 19, at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Mercer Street, Princeton, W.Va., with Dr. David Dockery and the Rev. Ralph Kidd officiating. Burial followed in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Courthouse Road, Princeton, W.Va.

He was born Feb. 25, 1933, in Bland, Va. He was educated in Bland, Va., and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving from 1951 until 1955 during the Korean War. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Navy occupation service medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He retired in March 1995 from the American Electric Power Company in Princeton, W.Va. after 37 1/2 years of service. He was a deacon and longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Princeton, W.Va., and was the handyman for the church. He was a member of Princeton Moose Lodge No. 1561, the B.P.O.E. Princeton Lodge 1459 and the VFW of Mercer County, W.Va.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Sherman Hylton and Bertha Marie Dillow Hylton; a brother, Billy "Casey" Hylton; a brother-in-law, Howard Wilson; and a nephew, Tracy Hylton.

Survivors include his wife of 49 1/2 years, Pearl Wilson Hylton of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Benjamin S. and Shirley Neely Hylton of Knoxville, Tenn.; a daughter, Alisa Carol Hylton of the home; grandchildren, Elaine Michelle Hylton of Cork, Ireland, Valerie Mariah Hylton and Zachary Benjamin Hylton, both of Knoxville, Tenn.; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Jimmy L. "Wimpie" and Betty Hylton of Bland, Va., Jacky R. and Peggy Hylton of Cummings, Ga., and Sallie "Weedie" Hylton of Bland, Va.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Raymond and Louise Wilson of Pearisburg, Va., Buzz and Mildred Richardson of Bland, Va., Betty Muncy of Cedar Bluff, Va., Don and Ruby Ayers, Robert and Thelma Owens, all of Abingdon, Va.; an adopted brother, Richard Shumate of Princeton, W.Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
