Douglas Jasper Thomas, 70, of Montcalm, W.Va., formerly of Bastian, Va., died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, in the Princeton Community Hospital, Princeton, W.Va.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 9, at 2 p.m. at the Bastian Union Church with the Rev. Lee McIntosh officiating. Interment will be at the Rose Hill Cemetery, Bastian, Va. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Bland and Giles American Legion and V.F.W. Posts.
He was born Sept. 16, 1932, at Bastian, Va. He served his country for 23 1/2 years in the U.S. Army and was a staff sergeant. He was commander of the Bland V.F.W. Post No. 7969 from 1985 to 1991.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jasper Earnest and Maggie Neal Thomas; a sister, Frances Hull; and a brother, Donald Thomas.
Survivors include one brother, William Arthur Thomas of Montcalm, W.Va.; two sisters, Jewell T. Richardson of La Belle, Fla., and Ruby T. Munsey of Montcalm, W.Va.; and three nieces and three nephews.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, Jan. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bastian Union Church.

Charles Anderson Tweedy Sr., 56, of the Grapefield community in Bland County, Va., died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002.
Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 25, at 8 p.m. at Newberry Funeral Home in Bland, Va., with Pastor Jim Conley officiating. A private burial was held Saturday, Oct. 26, in Temple Hill Cemetery, Bland, Va.
Born April 1, 1946, he was a lifelong resident of this area. He was a member of the Hollybrook Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Teresa Tweedy; and his parents, William and Rosia Madeline Grant Tweedy.
Survivors include one son, Charles "Andy" Tweedy II of the home; three brothers and sisters-in-law, William "Bill" Tweedy of Tazewell, Va., Robert and Irene Tweedy of Taylorsville, N.C., and George and Margaret Tweedy of Spring Hill, Fla.; one sister, Margaret T. Gillespie of Tazewell, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

The Rev. Raymond B. Davis, 59, of Tampa, Fla., formerly of Bland, Va., died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, in a Florida hospital.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 11 a.m. at Hopewell Funeral Home Chapel in Plant City, Fla. Interment was in Hopewell Memorial Gardens, Plant City, Fla. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, at 6 p.m. at the Bland Bible Church on Route 42 in the Slide area of the county, with Brother Dewayne Martin officiating.
He was born in Bland, Va., a son of the late Carl Davis and Bertie Harden. He moved to the Tampa, Fla., area in 1973. He had served time in the U.S. Army and was a carpenter.
He is survived by his wife, Miriam Davis of Tampa, Fla.; two sons, Lee Davis of Richlands, Va., and Christopher Davis of War, W.Va.; two daughters, Lynn Mayle of Plant City, Fla., and Rebecca Hewitt of Tazewell, Va.; four brothers, Glenn Davis of Cherrypoint, N.C., Teddy Davis, Johnny Davis and Carl Davis Jr., all of Bland, Va.; 13 grandchildren, one great-grandson, several nieces and nephews.

Effie Haga Pennington, 90, of Bastian, Va., died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 10 a.m. at the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel, Bland, Va., with the Rev. Lee Macintosh officiating. Interment will follow in the Azen Church Cemetery, Konnarock, Va.
She was born in Smyth County, Va., a daughter of the late John Wesley and Nancy Pennington Haga. She was a member of the Bastian Union Church, Bastian, Va.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Banner Pennington, four sisters and one brother.
Survivors include her husband, Fred Pennington of the home; two daughters and son-in-law, Eleanor and Garland Dillow of Bastian, Va., and Beverely Miller of Wytheville, Va.; one stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Geraldine and Wayne Perry of Bastian, Va.; two stepsons and stepdaughter-in-law, John Pennington of Bastian, Va., and Russell and Nancy Pennington of Bastian, Va.; one brother, Clarence Haga of Bastian, Va.; three sisters, Winnie Thompson of Mullins, W.Va., Martha Hoosier of Bastian, Va., and Mary Blevins of Chilhowie, Va.; four grandchildren, Pam Gore of Bastian, Va., Rita Bradshaw of Bland, Va., Penny Bowman of King, N.C., and Ronald Miller of Bland, Va.; four stepgrandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, four great-stepgrandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Alene Nicewonder Stowers, 72, of Bland, Va., died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, in Kegley Manor, Bastian, Va.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 11 a.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Bland County, Va., with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Interment will be in the Stowers Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.
She was born in Bland, Va., a daughter of the late Andrew and Lilia Thompson Nicewonder. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, was a 4-H All Star and active in the community.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Andrew Nicewonder Jr.
Survivors include her husband, Seldon Stowers Sr. of the home; a son, Seldon Stowers Jr. of Bland, Va.; two grandsons, Joseph Stowers and James Stowers, both of Ceres, Va.; four sisters, Hazel Beasley of Greensboro, N.C., Rosa Hall of Pulaski, Va., Dolly Hart of Payson, Ariz., and Freeda Brookman of Taylorsville, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Meda Dalton of Dublin, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Alfred and Ruby Lucille Starling Cox; and a brother, David Michael Cox.

He was born in Kentucky. He was a member of the Bland Lutheran Presbyterian Church and the Masonic Lodge in Mt. Rainier, Md.
