Kathleen Mullins Lane Ratliff, 56, of Route 2, died Tuesday, July 1, 1997, at her home. She was a native and lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of the Holiness Church and was a homemaker. She was the widow of her first husband, Estil F. Lane. Survivors include her husband, Jim Ratliff Jr.; two daughters, Diane Dotson, Maxie, and Stephanie Stiltner, Harman; three sons, Curtis Lee Lane and Rocky Dean lane, both of Tazewell, and Jerry Wayne Lane, Maxie; two sisters, Geraldine Lester, Oakwood, and Peggy Blankenship, Harman; two brothers, Kennith Mullins, St. Augustine, Fla., and Ronnie Mullins, Taylorsville, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Hattie Wilson Stiltner, 90, of Route 2, Poplar Creek section, Buchanan County, died Tuesday, July 1, 1997, in Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy. She was a native of Buchanan County, a 52-year member of Old Regular Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was the widow of Fred A. Stiltner. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Ruby Keen, Pikeville, Ky., Mrs. Robert (Alice) Copeland, Brandywine, Mich., Mrs. John (Brenda) Myers, Fountain Town, Ind., and Mrs. Dewey (Pearl) McClanahan, Grundy; one son, Denver Stiltner, Grundy; 28 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
Mack Walter Matney, 54, of the Kents Ridge section, died Tuesday, July 1, 1997, in a Richlands hospital. He was a native of Buchanan County and was a self-employed building contractor for 23 years for MWM Construction, Inc. He was a member of the Tazewell County Airport Authority, a member of Tazewell County PSA and a member of Tazewell County Fair Committee. He was also a member of the Tazewell County Habitat for Humanity and a member of Belfast Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Lester Matney; two sons, Calvin Matney, Blacksburg, and Barry Matney, Cedar Bluff; three daughters, Mrs. Robin Templeton, Charlottesville, Va., Le Chrystie Matney and Amy Matney, both of the home; his mother, Mrs. Nora Bailey Matney, Cedar Bluff; seven brothers, Roger Matney, Sterling, Va., James Matney, Arcola, Va., Jack Matney, Tazewell, Joe Matney, Bobby Matney, Keith Matney and Tim Matney, all of Cedar Bluff; and four grandchildren.
Linda Cooper Skeens, 78, died Tuesday, July 1, 1997. She was a native and lifelong resident of Buchanan County and attended the Church of Christ. She was a homemaker and was the widow of Charlie Skeens. Survivors include two sons, Bobby Joe Skeens, Big Rock, and Bernard Lee Skeens, Yorktown, Va.; three grandchildren; two step-granddaughters; two step-grandsons; four step-great-granddaughters; three step-great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.
OAKWOOD, Va. -- Mr. Luchion Carlos (LC) Hale, 62, passed away Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, in Buchanan General Hospital following a long illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Willie E. and Zella Lewis Hale. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Buford Hale. PILGRIM KNOB, Va. -- Mrs. Elizabeth (Lizzy) Mullins Crockett, 83, formerly of Grundy, Va., passed away Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at the home of her son, Enoch Mullins, in the Elkins Branch section of Buchanan County, following a short illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Milton and Sarah Vandyke. She was a member of the Grundy Senior Citizens. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Jake Mullins, and her second husband, Grat Crockett; and several brothers and sisters. She is survived by one son, Enoch Mullins and wife Mary of Pilgrim Knob; two daughters: Mrs. Juanita Elswick and husband David of Grundy, and Mrs. Geraldine Woods and husband Lloyd of Vansant, Va.; 12 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild also survive. GLADE SPRING, Va. -- Mrs. Dollie Baldwin Puckett, 84, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Buchanan County and had lived in Glade Spring for the past 21 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Puckett. She is survived by a daughter, Peggy Fox of Rosedale, Va.; six sons, Larry Puckett of Stafford, Va., Jerry P. Puckett and Tommy Puckett, both of King George, Va., Freddie Puckett of Lancaster, Pa., Sammy J. Puckett of Kodak, Tenn., and Danny Puckett of Fredericksburg, Va.; a brother, Wilson Baldwin of Lakeland, Fla.; a sister, Lois Owens of Lakeland; 18 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. HAYSI, Va. -- Ray Deel, 63, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, in Buchanan General Hospital at Grundy, Va. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Parrot and Icey Deel. He was a miner and member of UMWA Local 7170 and was former owner of Golden Chip Coal Company. He was of the Old Regular Baptist faith. He is survived by his wife, Omalene Deel; son, Arnie Deel of Haysi; sisters, Dorothy Newsome and Evelyn Deel, both of Haysi; brothers, Tom Deel and Auty Deel, both of Haysi, and Charlie Deel of Grundy; and a granddaughter, Pebbles Steele of Grundy. The funeral service will be Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Russell Prater Church on Greenbrier with Elders Eddie Newsome and Danny Yates officiating. GRUNDY, Va. -- Jamie Frank Justus, 65, of the Roseann area of Route No. 1, passed away Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Buchanan General Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Boyd Justus and Mary Ramsey Justus Lieby of Dover, Del. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of the Presbyterian church. He attended Hurley High School and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1962 assigned to the 4751st Air Defense Squadron Missile ADC, receiving several medals, including the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. At the time of his separation, he was stationed with the Tachikawa Air Base, Honshu, Japan. He was a member of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion. He was a former employee of Pet Milk Company and was chief mechanic for Twinstar Mining Company. Mr. Justus is survived by his wife of 43 years: Judith Fay Howell Justus, Route No. 1, Grundy; three daughters: Virginia Lee Justus Popowicz and husband, Bill Popowicz, Goldsboro, N.C., Teresa Ann Justus and friend, Keith Larsen, Baltimore, Md., and Barbara Sue Justus Carr and husband, Eddie Carr, Las Vegas,. Nev.; two sons: Jamie Frank Justus Jr. and wife, Patsy Justus, Hurley, Va., and Curtis Boyd Justus and wife, Jerri Justus, Roseann, Va.; two brothers: Carter Justus, Cincinnati, Ohio, and George Justus, Dover, Del. She was born in Buchanan County, Va., and was a daughter of the late Walter Edward "Peabody" and Julia "Tootsie" Wimmer Mullins, both Buchanan County natives. She was a 1971 graduate of Whitewood High School and was a former employee of the Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Billy Edward Mullins. DAVENPORT, Va. -- Carol Compton, 62, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at his residence after losing his battle with cancer. A native of Buchanan County, he was a son of the late William Compton and Nora Hess Compton. In addition to his parents, a brother, Sam Compton, and a sister, Vickie Caldwell, preceded him in death. He was a blacksmith and well-known for his ability to shoe horses. He was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. He is survived by a son, Timothy Compton of Honaker; a daughter, Belisha Compton of Davenport; sisters, Ellen Weiss of Dayton, Ohio, Nannie Ray of Troy, Ohio, and Hattie May of West Milton, Ohio; brothers, Billy Compton of Dayton, Ohio, and Don Compton of Centerville, Ohio; and two granddaughters, Hannah and Tish. BELLEVUE, Iowa -- Lucy Marrs Hipps, 89 years of age, formerly of Buchanan County, passed away Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, in Mill Valley Care Center following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Ballard P. and Roxie Flemings Marrs. She was a resident of Buchanan County most of her life until she went to reside with her daughter, Mrs. Judy Maynard in Bellevue. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and a homemaker. She was a member of the Jubilee Christian Center. Mrs. Hipps was preceded in death by: her husband, Darrell Hipps, July 31, 1983; two daughters; three sisters; four brothers; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild. She is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Starkey (Helen) Adkins of Columbus, Ohio, and Mrs. Jim (Judy) Maynard of Bellevue; two sons: Ralph Hipps of Carpentersville, Ill., and Larry Hipps of Sherman, Texas; and one sister, Ruth Knovac of Jacksonville, Fla. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Bob and Florence Moore Chambers. He was a retired coal miner, a farmer and member of UMWA Local 7327, Jewell Valley, Va. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Evelyn Day Chambers; four sisters, Mary Carter, Bell Osborne, Margie Riley and Edith Rose; and three brothers, Clarence Chambers, Claude Chambers and Walter Chambers. ABINGDON, Va. -- Mr. Earnest "Buck" Matney, 76, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, in Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn. Born in Buchanan County, Va., he was a son of the late Wade Matney and Elizabeth Davis Matney. He was the widower of Dolly Mae Kelly Matney. Mr. Matney was a retired heavy equipment operator. He had resided in Freehold, N.J., for 26 years before moving to the Abingdon area 27 years ago. Mr. Matney was well liked and admired by his friends and neighbors. He was often referred to as "Mr. Fit It" because of his willingness to work on machinery of all types for them. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and John Gualtieri of Edison, N.J.; and a grandson, Chad Earnest Gualtieri also of Edison. The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday in Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jason Nunley officiating. GRUNDY, Va. -- Riddle Stiltner, 87 years of age, of the Lynn Camp section of Route 1, passed away Friday, Jan. 25, 2001, following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Miles and Sarah Jane Fields Stiltner. He was a member of Blackey Church of Christ, a retired self-employed coal operator and a member of John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion. He was a veteran of World War II, having enlisted in April 1941. He entered the continent of Europe in December 1943 and served there until his departure in October 1945. He was assigned to the 979th Signal Motor Mess Co. and earned the American Theater Service Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon. He served in campaigns in Rhineland and Central Europe. He is survived by one daughter, Bessie Riddle Hawkins of Grundy; one son, Ricky Darrell Stiltner of Route 1, Grundy; and one sister, Virginia Fern Farmer of Route 1 , Grundy. He is also survived by four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maudie Farmer Stiltner on June 29, 1992; two sisters, Callie Spencer and Elizabeth Farmer; and five brothers, Oscar, Lilburn, Marvin, Lawson and Arnold Stiltner. He was also preceded in death by one great-grandson, Tyler Brett Stiltner. ABINGDON, Va. -- Mr. Ralph Thacker, 54, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center. He was born in Buchanan County and had lived most of his life in Washington County. He was the son of the late Oliver Thacker. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Vietnam Conflict. He was a member of James Peters DAV Chapter 57, the UMWA Local 1640 and of the Baptist faith. He was a loving father, granddaddy and son. Survivors include two sons, John Thacker and wife, Amy, Abingdon, Va., and Daryll Thacker and wife Sherry, Abingdon, Va.; his mother, Dessie Arms, Abingdon; one brother, Bill Thacker, Vansant, Va.; three grandchildren, Kayla Marie Thacker, Conrad Jordan Thacker and McKenzia Nicole Thacker; and his wife, Frances Thacker. A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at 2 p.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. John W. Price officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with military rites by Patton-Crosswhite VFW Post 6975. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday night at the funeral home. LEBANON, Va. -- Carrie M. Arrington of Route 1, Vansant, Va., 87, passed away Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at her daughter's home. A lifelong resident of Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Jake and Emmy Compton Owens. She was a homemaker and a member of the Sandy Basin Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Wanda Elaine Arrington; four brothers; and three sisters. Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Clinton Arrington Sr.; a daughter and her husband, Sue and Clifford Edwards of Lebanon; a son and his wife, Clinton Jr. and Gladys Arrington of Route 1, Vansant; a brother, Jack Owens of Route 1, Haysi, Va.; seven grandchildren and spouses, Wanda and Robert Coleman, Kathy and Vester Deel, Jeffrey and Kim Ramey, Jonathan and Jenny Ramey, Anthony and Angie Ramey, David and Debbie Arrington and Randy and Shawna Arrington; two step-grandchildren and spouses, David and Tammy Edwards and Debbie and Eric Nicholson; seven great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29, 2000, at Haysi Funeral Home with Elders Joe Edwards, Daryl Davis and Danny Smith officiating. BIG ROCK, Va. -- Kenis Darnell, 87 years of age, passed away Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, in Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness. Born in Pike County, Ky., he was a son of the late Colbert and Virgie Coleman Darnell. He had been a resident of Buchanan County several years, a member of the Free Pentecostal Church of God, Mouth Card, Ky., a retired employee of Pittston Coal Corporation and a member of United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 8588. Mr. Darnell is survived by his wife, Udell Ratliff Rice Darnell, Big Rock; two daughters: Loretta Sue Whittaker, Stanford, Ky., and Virgie Ellen Carter, Terre Haute, Indiana; two stepdaughters: Charlotte Ann Pennington, Maynardsville, Ky., and Rebecca Owens, Grundy, Va.; four stepsons: Jim Radford Rice, Grundy, Julius Rice Jr., Vansant, Va., Robert Rice, Big Rock, and Jeffery Scott Rice, Big Rock; three brothers: Earl Scott Darnell, Mouth Card, Ky., Lloyd Darnell, Mouth Card, and Forester Darnell, West Terre Haute, Indiana. He is also survived by five grandchildren; 20 step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ethel and Mary Magalene Darnell; one half-sister, Icie Shortt; five brothers, Culbert, Charles, Lundy, Herman and Arville Darnell; one half-brother, Columbus Shortt; and one stepson, Jerry Rice. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Ministers Jimmy Kerr, E.C. Honaker, Ralph Taylor and Jessie Taylor officiating with burial to follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
