BUCHANAN COUNTY -- Vicey Ramey Yates, 95, of the Conaway section, passed away at her home Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, following a lengthy illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late G.T. "Thompson" and Louise Looney Ramey. She was a member of Sumac Grove Primitive Baptist Church and a devoted mother and housewife. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert H. Yates on Jan. 18, 1971. She is survived by three sons, Ralph Edward and wife, Edith Yates, of Big Rock, Va., Glenn Thomas and wife, Mae Yates, of Yorktown, Va., and Harry Eugene and wife, Judy Yates, of Conaway; one sister, Mrs. Ocie and husband, Don Cantrell, of Big Rock; one half-sister, Sue Justus of Big Rock; and one half-brother, Johnny Mullins of Big Rock. She is also survived by eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Helen Yates and Ruby Puckett; three sons, Elbert Harvey Yates Jr., Harold Yates and Kermit L. Yates; two sisters, Clementine Mullins and Ethel Hagy; and four brothers, Clell Ramey, Wilson Ramey, Bud Ramey and James Ramey. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evangelist Mike Rife officiating with burial to follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock. Friends may call at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel after 6 p.m. Saturday evening. There will be evening services at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel at 7 p.m. Saturday evening. GRUNDY, Va. -- Narcie Lee Hale Skeens, 66 years of age, of the Stiltner's Creek section of Route 1, passed away Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, in Clinch Valley Medical Center, Richlands, Va., following an extended illness. Born in Russell County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Willie E. and Zella Lewis Hale. She had been a resident of Buchanan County most of her life and a member of Grace Baptist Church. She was a former nursing aide at Grundy Hospital for 10 years, a former employee of Buchanan County School System and a former employee of Vansant Food City. Mrs. Skeens is survived by her husband, Keister Allen Skeens of Grundy; one daughter, Teresa Brown and husband Gary, Meadowview, Va.; six sisters, Dolly Hale, Richlands, Joyce Ross and husband Ray, Bristol, Tenn., Darlis Armes and husband, Ersel, Lebanon, Va., Sue Meadows and husband, Jimmie, Claypool Hill, Va., Maxine Perry and husband, Bill, Grundy, and Polly Riley, Bristol, Va.; and one grandson, Christopher Eric Endicott, Meadowview. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Buford and L.C. Hale. VANSANT, Va. -- Hazel Madilene Boyd, 62, of the Boyd Ridge section passed away Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at her home following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Fanning and Ethel Jackson Boyd. She was a life-long resident of Buchanan County and a member of Sandlick Primitive Baptist Church. She was a homemaker. Miss Boyd is survived by five sisters, Martha May and husband Walter, Freeburn, Ky., Myrtle Boyd, Waldo, Fla., Marie Charles and husband Glen, Vansant, Kathlene Lockhart and husband Donald, Vansant, and Dorothy Hibbitts and husband Robert, Vansant; two brothers, Jennings Boyd and wife Audrey, Bishop, Va., and Ernest Boyd and wife Betty, Freeburn; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Teddy Wayne Boyd, July 25, 1955, and David Francis Boyd, July 22, 1996. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, March 1, 2001, at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Elders, Paul Varney, Elmer Brown, Price Viers, Don Stacy, Franklin Viers and Mike Smith officiating, with burial to follow in Boyd Family Cemetery on Boyd Ridge on the head of Leemaster near Vansant. ABINGDON, Va. -- Mr. Elmer Deel, 68, has gone to be with his Heavenly Father on Feb. 26, 2001. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Emory Floyd Deel and Nancy Jane Deel. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ocie Hill, formerly of Haysi, Va., and a brother, Earl Deel, formerly of Abingdon. Mr. Deel was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. He was retired from the Buchanan County School System and was a member and elder of Shakesville Church of Christ in Bristol. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kathleen Mayo Deel; two daughters, Debra Mitchell and husband Alvin of East Brookfield, Mass., and Kimberly Lambert and husband Lanny of Hudson, N.C.; two grandchildren, Sarah Lambert and Steven Mitchell; a sister, Rosa Ramey of Haysi, Va.; five brothers, George Deel of Haysi, Joseph Deel of Birchleaf, Va., Robert Deel of Abingdon, David Deel of Richlands and Emory Deel of Johnson City, Tenn. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 1, 2001, in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Mr. Steve Bufkin of Wilkes Christian Church, Michael F. McCoy, evangelist, of Macedonia Church of Christ, Mr. Wayne Lambert of Shakesville Church of Christ, and Mr. Don Cooper of Bluefield College of Evangelism officiating. HAYSI -- Bobby Deel, 61, of Route 2, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Buchanan County, a son of the late Noah and Cora Oquinn Deel. He was a retired coal miner with Clinchfield Coal Co., a member of UMWA Local 2888 and was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Ann Deel; two sons, Ronald Deel of Haysi and Greg Deel of Birchleaf, Va.; two daugthers, Tammy Deel of Lincolnton, N.C., and Donna Edwards of Cartersville, Ga.; two sisters, Bonnie Oquinn and Trula Oquinn, both of Haysi; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 1 p.m. in Haysi Funeral Home Chapel. Elders Frank Newsome, Toby Bailey and Johnny Paul McClanahan will officiate. PRATER, Va. -- Polly Louisa Oquinn, 85, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, in Buchanan General Hospital. She was born in the Greenbrier section of Buchanan County, a daughter of the late Miles Harvey and Mary Elizabeth Coleman Deel. She was the widow of Rufus Paul Oquinn and was a member of Paw Paw Old Regular Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Leona O. Church of Clintwood and Ledna O. Bunn of Big Sandy, Tenn.; three sons, Jess Oquinn of Hudson, Fla., Casby Oquinn of Clinchco, Va., and Terry Oquinn of Prater; 24 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and six step-great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 11 a.m. in Paw Paw Old Regular Baptist Church by Haysi Funeral Home. Elders Frank Oquinn, David Oquinn, Freelin Yates and Danny Yates will officiate. Burial will be in A.F. Deel Cemetery, Route 2, Haysi. Mrs. Oquinn was also preceded in death by a son, Billy Oquinn; and three daughters, Vicey Perkins, Martha Oquinn and Lorene Oquinn. ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Paul Evans Kiser, 89, of 59 Lynwood Circle, formerly of Bluefield, Va., died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999, in Brian Center Nursing Home. He was born in Buchanan County, a daughter of the late Elbert and Matilda Stacey Kiser. He lived in Bluefield, Va., for 32 years prior to moving to Asheville, N.C., in 1990. He retired in 1972 as sales manager with Peoples Life Insurance Co. He was a member of Abernathy United Methodist Church in Asheville and a former member of Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church in Bluefield, Va. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Berwind, W.Va., a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the VFW and American Legion in Bluefield, W.Va. Surviving are his wife, Jacqueline T. Kiser; two sons, Paul David Kiser of Carson City, Nev., and Donald Malcolm Kiser of Asheville; a daughter, Janice Rebecca Kiser of Lawrenceville, Ga.; a stepson, Steven Michael Summey of Asheville; four sisters, Dorcas Overbey and Ocie Jaber, both of Cleveland, Tenn., Alice Smith of Chattanooga and Frances Turpin of Newark, Del.; two brothers, Hubert Kiser of Pensacola, Fla., and Ralph Kiser of Kingsport; and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, Va. The Rev. Larry Ramey will officiate. Entombment will be in Woodlawn Park Mausoleum in Bluewell. RAVEN -- Stella Mae Boyd, 80, of Route 1, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, in a Bluefield, W.Va., hospital. She was born in Buchanan County, a daughter of the late Washington and Bessie Osborne. She was a member of Pilgrim Knob Church of God and the Keen Mountain Pentecostal Holiness Church. Surviving are her husband, Cloyd Boyd; three daughters, Mrs. Dallas (Anna Ruth) Horne and Mrs. Jim (Mary) Keen, both of Clifton Fork, Va., and Mrs. Bill (Ellen) Gray of Conway, S.C.; a son, John Boyd of Clifton Fork; three sisters, Ora Foran of Cedar Bluff, Cora Arnold of Raven and Ollie Ward of Chincotague Island, Va.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel in Keen Mountain, Va. Don Smith and the Rev. Randy Webb will officiate. Burial will be in Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Va. Mrs. Boyd was also preceded in death by a son, Michael Boyd; and three brothers, Milton, Jeff and Beverly Osborne. OAKWOOD, Va. -- Roland Howard Deel Jr., 38, of Garden Creek, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, at his home from injuries sustained from a house fire. He was born in Buchanan County, a son of Roland Deel Sr. of Vansant and Florette Bentley Deel of Oakwood. He was a disabled coal miner and was of the Holiness faith. Surviving, besides his parents are, a daughter, Ashley Page Deel of Vansant, Va.; a sister, Teresa Lynn Deel of Fort Pierce, Fla.; and two nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. in Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel in Grundy. The Revs. James Chapman and Dewey Ward will officiate. Burial will be in Bentley Cemetery on 620 Mile Branch in Grundy. Mr. Deel was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Ezra and Gertha Deel; and maternal grandparents, Genesee and Gracie Bentley. Among survivors are nephews, Richard Lee Deel and Robert Lee Deel, both of Oakwood. Pallbearers will be family and friends. TAZEWELL, Va. -- Ida Belle Hackney Stewart, 94, formerly of Wardell, Va., died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, in a Tazewell hospital. She was born in Cleveland, Va., a daughter of the late George and Rachel Nash Hackney, both Buchanan County natives. She lived in the Wardell area for the past 24 years. She was a graduate of Cleveland High School and a member of First Baptist Church in Knoxville. Surviving are six nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon by Hurst-Scott Funeral Home of Richlands. The Rev. Leonard Ferguson will officiate. CEDAR BLUFF -- Ethel Aleen Ratliff Russ, 79, formerly of Oakwood, Va., died Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, in a Richlands hospital. She was born in Mount Heron, Va., a daughter of the late John P. and Mary K. Jackson Ratliff. She was a member of Garden Baptist Church and a retired teacher's aide and bus driver for Buchanan County Public Schools. She was the widow of Claude Lee "Cobb" Russ. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. James Shelby (Jo Ann) Jewell; four brothers, Don Ratliff, Ira Ratliff, Bill Ratliff and Eugene Ratliff, all of Oakwood, Va.; and three sisters, Elsie McGlothlin of Richlands, Mildred Smith of Hurley, Va., and Pauline Brown of Oakwood; three grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel in Keen Mountain, Va. The Rev. Ancil Childress will officiate. Burial will be in Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Va. Mrs. Russ was also preceded in death by a son, James Lee "Cobb Jr." Russ; three brothers; and a sister. Among survivors are grandchildren, Mrs. Louie (Rhonda) Mullins of Rosedale, James Lee "Rusty" Russ Jr. of Oakwood and Jamia Leigh Russ of Kernersville, N.C.; great-granddaughters, Leigh Ann, Ashley Dawn and Billee Jo Mullins, all of Rosedale; and two special caregivers, Rosie Price and Martha Dunford. LOUISA, Ky. -- W.A. "Bill" Combs, 88, of 605 North Lock Ave., died Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, in Three Rivers Medical Center. He was born in Knott County, Ky., a son of the late Shade Combs and Sarah Ritchie Combs. He was a longtime resident of Buchanan County, a retired office manager with United Coal Co. and was of the Baptist faith. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Gayle Mitchell Combs; two sons, William M. Combs of Jacksonville, Fla., and Lloyd W. Combs of Cedar Bluff; three grandchildren, Willard Vinson Combs, Harold Lawrence Combs and Victoria Combs Chester; and six great-grandchildren, Cody Chester, Mitchell Combs, Michelle Combs, Melissa Combs, Christopher Combs and Matthew Combs. Funeral services will be held Monday in Louisa. Wilson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Rife, 86, of the Pilgrim Knob section of Buchanan County, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jack (Brenda) Cole, following a long illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Sylvester and Syrilda Horn Rife. He was a member of Hale Creek Old Regular Baptist Church for 14 years, a member of the U.M.W.A. and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was a retired coal miner, having worked 36 years with the Jewell Ridge Coal Co. In addition to his parents, Mr. Rife was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Mae Rife; a daughter, Irene Rife Lester; ten brothers, George, John, Millard, Ervin, Gordon, Alda, Earl, Burl, Authur and Nelson Rife; and one sister, Watie Deel. Mr. Rife is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Brenda Cole and husband, Jack, of Pilgrim Knob; two sons, Kermit Rife and wife, Lee, of Winnabow, N.C., and Ken Rife and wife, Cindy, of Abingdon, Va.; three brothers, Henry Rife of Flint, Mich., Carl Rife of Burton, Mich., and Bill Rife of Pickens, S.C.; two sisters; Mrs. Georgia Smith of Hurley, Va., and Mrs. Mary Rowe of Pilgrim Knob; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Janice Deel GRUNDY, Va. -- Janice Deel, 55, of Rt. 4, passed away Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Buchanan General Hospital. A native of Buchanan County, she was a daughter of Sarah Ann Oquinn Deel and the late Charlie "Hop" Deel. She was of the Old Regular Baptist faith and a former employee of Food City at Grundy. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Jerry "Don" Deel; three sons, Danny Deel, Jerry Wayne Deel and Kevin Deel, all of Prater, Va.; a daughter, Marla Deel of Prater, Va.; a brother, Garnie Deel of Prater, Va.; five sisters, Mrs. Olin (Scema) Deel, Mrs. Johnny (Betsy) Kelly, Mrs. Kyle (Pansy) Kelly, all of Haysi, Va., Mrs. Tommy (Joyce) Boyd of Grundy, Va., and Mrs. Marell (Katie) Deel of Vansant, Va.; and eight grandchildren. Funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at 11 a.m. at Haysi Funeral Home with Elders Freddie Ramey, Freelin Yates and David Oquinn officiating. Ralph Harrow Mitchell, 42 years of age, of the Dry Fork Section of Vansant, Va., passed away Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, following a short illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Beatrice Marrow Mitchell and Jennings Mitchell, Rt. 1, Raven, Va. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of the New Life Full Gospel Church, a graduate of Grundy Senior High School Class of 1977, and a disabled coal miner. Mr. Mitchell is survived by his wife: Cathy Sandra Yates Mitchell of Vansant, Va.; one son: Joshua Caine Mitchell, Rt. 4, Grundy, Va.; two sisters: Elizabeth Gay Yates, Patterson, Va., and Kathy Lynn Dennis, Wellington, Ohio; and one brother: Doug Mitchell, Bristol, Va. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Junior and Maggie Stacy Davis. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a retired employee of M.W. Mining Corp., Phelps, Ky. Mr. Davis is survived by his wife: Brenda "Bunny" King Davis, Route \1, Hurley, Va.; 1 daughter: Stephanie Stiltner and husband Tony Stiltner, Abingdon, Va.; 3 sons: Brian Davis, Hurley, Va., Bradley Davis and wife Teresa Davis, Stopover, Ky., and Brandon Davis, Emory, Va.; and 1 sister: Margie Davis, Floyd, Va. Also, survived by 2 grandchildren: Toby Slone and Haley Stiltner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Frank Davis; and grandparents: Bud and Lou Davis and Ben and Sally Stacy. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy is in charge of all arrangements.

James E. Murphy, 86, of Mavisdale, Va., died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, in Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, Va., following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Bud and Rosa Belle Looney Murphy. He was co-owner and general manager of Ben Franklin Stores in Iaeger and Bradshaw, W.Va., for many years, a 32nd degree Mason, Past Master of Iaeger Masonic Lodge 148, Past District Deputy Grand Mast of 6th Masonic District, Past Patron Lotus Chapter Eastern Star, Past Director McDowell Shrine Club, member of Beni Kedem Shrine Temple, former director McDowell Library, former director Welch March of Dimes Chapter, former Iaeger Town Cuncilman, past president of Iaeger Rotary Club, past chairman and trustee Iaeger Methodist Church and many other activities. He was a retired miner and of the Methodist faith. Mr. Murphy is survived by his wife, Thelma Honaker Murphy of Mavisdale; three stepdaughters: Lucy Sheets of Pilgrim Knob, Va., Mary Hampton of Pilgrim Knob and Patsy Keen of Whitewood, Va.; one sister: Lucy Adkins of Yelm, Wash.; two stepsons: Jack Keen of Wirtz, Va., and Michael Keen of English, W.Va.; 17 step-grandchildren; and 16 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Leah Viers Murphy; his second wife, Bessie Hill Murphy; one daughter; one son; four brothers; and one sister. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Leonard Meadows officiating with burial to follow in the Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery, Richlands, Va. Friends may call at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Wednesday evening at 5 p.m. Active pallbearers: members of Prayer Warrior House. Honorary pallbearers: Coy Keen, Jack Keen, Michael Keen, Gary Hampton, Hurley Ratliff, Joel Burks, Tim Hess, Harold Creed and Dr. V. Modi. There will be services at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy Va. is in charge of all arrangements.

James W. O'Quinn WEBER CITY, Va. -- James W. O'Quinn, 93, formerly of Haysi, Va., died in Brian Center Nursing Home, Monday, Dec. 11, 2000. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late John and Mary Owens O'Quinn and was the widower of Edkar Deel O'Quinn. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Frenchman, Finis and Rufus. He was a retired UMWA miner and was a member of Russell Prater Old Regular Baptist Church. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and C.B. Slemp of Blountville; granddaughters, Sabrina and husband, William Groceclose, and Martha Slemp; great-grandchildren, Samuel Groceclose and Sarah Groceclose; sisters, Cora O'Quinn, Emily Yates, Louannie Yates and Bertha O'Quinn, all of Haysi, and Rosie Mitchell of Blacksburg; and one brother, Walter O'Quinn of Holister, Fla. Funeral service will be Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at 1 p.m. at Haysi Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Frank O'Quinn and Freelin Yates officiating. Burial will follow in A.F. Deel Cemetery, Route 2, Haysi. Nephews and friends will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Haysi Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Delmer Lester Stiltner, 81 years of age, of Grundy, Va., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, in the Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Charlie W. and Julie Ann Clevinger Stiltner. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of the United States Armed Forces, having served in the United States Army during World War II. During his enlistment, he earned the rank of corporal and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal for World War II, American Campaign Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal. He was a retired heavy equipment operator. Mr. Stiltner is survived by one daughter: Doris Lee Stiltner of Grundy; one son: Delmer Lester Stiltner Jr. of Florence, S.C.; one grandson: David Lester Stiltner of Renton, Wash.; six sisters: Mrs. Polly S. Parish of Abingdon, Va., Mrs. Zona Dyer of Longweed, Fla., Mrs. Lona Kerley of Taylorsville, N.C., Mrs. Lockie McDonald of Painesville, Ohio, Mrs. Mary McPhail of Winter Park, Fla., and Mrs. Janice Smith of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; one brother: Frenchman Stiltner of Grundy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eloise Ridenour Stiltner on April 18, 1997, and three brothers, Leon, Elmer and Kirby Stiltner. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Joel Thornton officiating, with burial to follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock, Va. Friends may call at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel after 6 p.m. Friday. Active pallbearers will be friends. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy, Va., is in charge of all arrangements.
