Mrs. Nora Florence Childress, 87, of Tazewell, Va., formerly of Amonate, Va., passed away Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, following a long illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Basil Hatfield Stacy and Cynthia Looney Stacy. She was of the Free Will Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Arvil Childress; daughter, Watie Gay Edgin; and two infant daughters. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family in her generation. Mrs. Childress is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Nora Bostic of Springfield, Ohio, Mrs. Janice Patrick of Tazewell, Mrs. Elizabeth Monk of Tazewell, Mrs. Wilma Hall of Bristol, Tenn., and Mrs. Darlene Lewis of Salem, Va.; three sons, James Childress of Bell Spring, Va., Clyde Childress of North Tazewell and Raymond Childress of Bandy, Va.; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson also survive. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, in Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff, Va., with Rev. Sam Altizer officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Ralph E. Dotson of Hurley, Va., 37, of the right fork of the Paw Paw area of Hurley, passed away Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Buchanan General Hospital. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Green Dotson Jr. and Mrs. Pearl Scarberry Dotson of Hurley. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a graduate of Hurley High School and was a tree surgeon. Mr. Dotson is survived by his mother: Mrs. Pearl Scarberry Dotson, Hurley; three sisters: Darlene Dotson of Paw Paw, Ky., Ella Mae Prater of Hurley and Brenda Sargent of Hurley; two nieces: Stephanie Hurley and Jessica Lynn Spencer; and two nephews: Hershal Lee Prater and Allen James Spencer. Also, he is survived by a host of friends. He was preceded in death by one sister: Barbara Ann Dotson. Donald Ratliff, 67, of Oakwood, Va., passed away Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, in a Richlands hospital following a short illness. Born in Buchanan County, Va., he was the son of the late John P. and Mary Katherine Jackson Ratliff, both Buchanan County natives. Mr. Ratliff was retired from Island Creek Coal Co., a disabled coal miner and operator, a member of the U.M.W.A. District 28, a member of the New Life Fellowship Church at Oakwood, Va., and, with his wife, owned and operated the Oakwood Tastee Freeze for many years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Eldon Ratliff, Junior Ratliff and Garcel Ratliff; and two sisters, Marie Jackson and Ethel Russ. Mr. Ratliff is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mrs. Anne Ratliff; one daughter, Mrs. David (Marianne) Fletcher of Portsmouth, Va.; four sons, Mr. Stoney Ratliff and wife, Karen W., of Mooresville, N.C., Mr. Terry Ratliff and wife, Sandora, of Oakwood, Va., Mr. Johnny Ratliff and wife, Jasmin, of Oakwood and Mr. Bert Whitt and wife, Bonnie, of Seattle, Wash.; three brothers, Mr. Bill Ratliff, Mr. Ira Ratliff and Mr. Eugene (Shorty) Ratliff, all of Oakwood; three sisters, Mrs. Pauline Brown of Oakwood, Mrs. Mildred Smith of Hurley, Va., and Mrs. Elsie McGlothlin of Richlands, Va.; 11 grandchildren: Jeremy B. ROXBORO, N.C. -- Jennifer Lynn Kinser Street, 39, formerly of Buchanan County, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, in Durham Regional Hospital, Durham, N.C., following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Uless and Edith Dotson Kinser. She was a graduate of Grundy Senior High School, attended Southwest Virginia Community College and was a member of Vansant Church of Christ. She was an employee of Blue Cross and Blue Shield Insurance Company. Mrs. Street is survived by her husband: Cecil Monroe Street, Roxboro; two stepdaughters: Kay Street Rodriquez, Columbia, S.C., and Renee Simons, Columbia; two sisters: Judy Looney of Pelion, S.C., and Martha Owens, Vansant; four brothers: Fred Kinser, Richlands, Va., Rick Kinser, Hickory, N.C., Bill Kinser, Richlands, and Gerald Kinser, Vansant. GRUNDY, Va. -- Mr. Charles Jackson Brown Jr. died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, in the Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie, Va. He had been a resident of Buchanan County and had lived at the Valley Health Care Center since September 2000. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, Lodi, Va., a 50-year member of the Sandy Valley Masonic Temple, Grundy, and a 42-year employee of Appalachian Power Company. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II from 1941 to 1945, serving in the Pacific campaigns. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Clarice Rachel Widener Brown who died in 1950; his second wife of 40 years, Verneda Dickens Brown who died in 1991; his parents, Charles J. Brown Sr. and Martha Widener Brown of Washington County; and brothers, Forrest Brown and Morton Brown. Survivors: his wife, June W. Brown of Grundy; son and daughter-in-law, Charles J. Brown III and Jonnie S. Brown, both of Corona del Mar, Calif.; brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Lenora Brown of Chilhowie; grandchildren: Courtney S. Brown, Whitney L. Brown and Ross A. He was born in Buchanan County, a son of Edna Stacy Meadows of Hurley, Va., and the late Ayers Meadows. He was of the Baptist faith, attended the Unity Baptist Church and was a graduate of Hurley High School. He was employed by Cable Consultants as a telecommunications technician. Surviving, besides his mother, are his wife, Pat Hill Meadows of Atlanta; two daughters, Phyllis Ann Sprague and Beverly Sprague, both of Fort Myers, Fla.; a son, Danny C. Meadows of Stockbridge; seven sisters, Jean Justus and Sue Keen, both of Hurley, Va., Judi Horn of Grundy, Va., Sandy Estep of Stockbridge, Wanda Rowlette of Greenville, Ga., Patti Taylor of Abingdon and Thelma Belcher of Bland, Va.; three brothers, Ayers Randall Meadows of Greenville, Paul Meadows of Springfield, Ohio, and Benny Mitchell of Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a son of Myrtle Faye Boyd Yates of Prater, Va., and the late Frenchman Yates. He attended Coleman Methodist Church, was an employee of Misty Bee Coal Co. and a member of United Mine Workers of America. Surviving, besides his mother, are his wife, Allene Smith Yates; a daughter, Rebecca Y. Childress of Glade Spring; a son, Jennings David Yates of Grundy; four sisters, Christine White of Oakwood, Va., Hattie Prater of Hamilton, Ohio, Roxie Fain of Mocksville, N.C., and Rebal Keen of Grundy; and three grandchildren. She was born in Pan, W.Va., a daughter of the late George and Lilly Bell Keene Goodman, both Buchanan County, Va., natives. She lived in the Jewell Ridge and Pea Patch areas her entire life and was a member of Shelter Freewill Baptist Church at Whitewood, Va. She was the widow of Rufus Wimmer. She was a lifelong resident of the Richlands area, a retired employee of Mattie Williams Hospital and a member of Old Premier Full Gospel Temple at Red Ash, Va. She was the widow of Lee Cox. PILGRIM KNOB, Va. -- Elder Wallace R. Cooper, 96, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, in a Grundy hospital. He was born in McDowell County, W.Va., a son of the late Dave and Luvene Rife Cooper, both Buchanan County natives. He was a retired miner and farmer and served as an elder in Primitive Baptist Church for 71 years. He lived in the Buchanan County area most of his life and was a member of Pilgrim Rest Primitive Baptist Church at Pea Patch, Va. He was a member of UMWA Local Union 7327 of Jewell Valley, Va. He was the widower of Elzena Wimmer Cooper, Rachel Boyd Cooper and Rosie Horn Cooper. ABINGDON -- Glen Nickles, 78, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at his home. He was born in Buchanan County, a son of the late William Bowen and Ida Nickles. He lived most of his life in Dayton, Ohio, before moving to Abingdon in 1988. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 82nd Airborne Division. While in Dayton, he volunteered as a cook for several nursing homes and hospitals. Surviving are his wife, Faye Sesco Nickles; a brother, Thomas Harold Nickles of North Tazewell, Va.; four sisters, Bessie Sammons of South Williamson, Ky., Ruby Hagy and Ruth Pridemore, both of Abingdon, and Wanda Wright of Huntington, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews. GRUNDY -- Larkin A. Clevinger, 72, of the Home Creek section of Route 1, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, in Buchanan General Hospital. He was a life-long resident of Buchanan County and a son of the late Elder John W. and Mandy Keen Clevinger. He was a member and deacon of Home Creek Old Regular Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 382nd Military Police Battalion in Germany. He was the recipient of the Army Occupational Medal and World War II Victory Ribbon. He was a member of Sandy Vally Lodge 17 AF&AM, I00F Lodge 17 of Grundy and of the American Legion. He was a retired employee of Harman Mining Co. and a member of United Mine Workers of America Local Union 7025. Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Mable McClanahan Clevinger; two daughters, Mrs. Jesse (Carolyn) Cammer of Gastonia, N.C., and Mrs. Jerry (Peggy) Thompson of Florence, S.C.; two sons, Wesley Clevinger of Grundy and David Clevinger of Vienna, Va.; six sisters, Alice Coleman of Abingdon, Lou Owens and Jean St. Clair, both of Grundy, Rachel Cochran of Green Cove Springs, Fla., Stella Dales of Franklin, Ohio, and Polly Bateman of Shuqualak, Miss.; a brother, Gilbert Clevinger of Haysi; and four grandsons. ABINGDON -- Pearl Armes Clark, 74, formerly of Mavisdale in Buchanan County, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born in Drill, Va., a daughter of the late Rufus and Louisa Baldwin Armes. She was the widow of Carless Clark and resided in Mavisdale for 36 years before moving to Abingdon in 1978. She was of the Baptist faith, a homemaker and attended Spoon Gap Freewill Baptist Church in Abingdon. Surviving are a son, the Rev. James Clark of Richlands; a daughter, Judith Taylor of Abingdon; two sisters, Bea Shell of Orwell, Ohio, and Faye Whitt of Mavisdale; three grandsons; and a great-grandson. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a daughter of the late Noah and Carrie Bailey Helton. She was a member of Helton's Chapel Free Will Baptist Church on Stinson Ridge and the widow of Woodrow Reynolds. Surviving are her husband, the Rev. HONAKER -- Lee Crouse, 77, of the Gardner community, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tenn. He was born in Buchanan County, a son of the late Walter and Madie Musick Crouse. He lived in the Drill area, near Honaker, for many years and moved to the Gardner community in 1974. He and his wife operated Crouse's Grocery in Drill for several years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the infantry on the Phillipine Islands. He was a retired coal miner, formerly employed with Island Creek Coal Co. at VP 1 and a member of UMWA Local 1589 in Oakwood. He was the widower of Maude Martin Crouse. Surviving are a son, Roger Crouse of Honaker; two sisters, Mrs. Clarence (Jean) Griffith of Blacklick, Ohio, and Fay Perkins of Mount Vernon, Ohio; a brother, Curtis Crouse of Mount Vernon; and two granddaughters. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Ancil Childress will officiate. Burial will be in Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon. Mr. Crouse was also preceded in death by a brother, Claude Crouse; and three sisters, Jeanette Clutter, Ethel Murphy and Kathleen Hamilton. ABINGDON -- E.M. "Bud" Coleman, 80, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, in Wellmont Hospice in Bristol, Tenn. He was born in Buchanan County, Va., a son of the late Hugh and Florence Arms Coleman. He lived in Buchanan County before moving to Abingdon in 1991. He was a member of the Pilgrim Baptist Church, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of John Gentry VFW Post 7360 in Grundy and John Ratliff American Legion Post 164 in Grundy. He was a member of Sandy Valley Masonic Lodge 0017, the IOOF in Grundy and the UMWA District 28. He retired from Harman Mining Corp. in Grundy and was a member of Buchanan County Board of Supervisors for 10 years and the Buchanan County Electoral Board for nine years. He was the widower of Alice H. Coleman. Surviving are two daughters, Sue Edwards of Pembroke, Va., and Judith Fuller of Abingdon; a sister, Lorene Lester of Casstown, Ohio; four grandchildren, Vicky Lumpp of Roanoke, Joseph Edwards of Richmond, David Edwards of Charlottesville, Va., and Steven Fuller of Abingdon; and six great-grandchildren, Shane Lumpp, Chauncey Lumpp, Gabe Lumpp, Creed Lumpp, Jacob Edwards and Kaci Fuller. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel. Pastor Chris Alford and the Rev. Ancil Childress will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Va., with military honors by John Ratliff American Legion Post 164, Grundy. Mr. Coleman was also preceded in death by a sister, Ona Johnson; and three brothers, Elmer Coleman, Thurman Coleman and Virgil Coleman. Among survivors are two sons-in-law, Victor Edwards of Pembroke and Garnett Fuller of Abingdon; and caregivers, Susie Keaton, Sandra Thayer and Louise Meade. Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be Glenn Stroud, Mike Pridemore, friends and deacons of Pilgrim Baptist Church and the Buchanan County Mens Club. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home, where a song service will be held at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Pilgrim Baptist Church, 16438 Pilgrim lane, Abingdon, VA 24211. GRUNDY -- Edna McClanahan Elswick, 87, of the Home Creek section of Route 1, died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, in Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a daughter of the late James Milton and Caroline Looney McClanahan. She was a member of Home Creek Old Regular Baptist Church, a homemaker and the widow of John Elswick. Surviving are three daughters, Nellene E. Clevinger Hutchinson, Mary Louise E. Case and Rebecca Lynn E. Hutchinson, all of Grundy; two sons, Otis Daniel Elswick and Billy Gene Elswick, both of Grundy; three granddaughters; seven grandsons; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. in Home Creek Old Regular Baptist Church on Home Creek, Route 1, Grundy, by Grundy Funeral Home. Elders Frank Oquinn, Jerry Newsome, Jackie Yates, Mack Varney, Freddy Ramey, Willis Conrad and Roby Raines will officiate. The body will be taken to the church Monday at 11 a.m. to await the funeral hour at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock, Va. Mrs. Elswick, a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, was also preceded in death by six sisters, Gracie Fields, Lucy Clevinger, Ethel Dotson, May Justus, Lillie Stiltner and Orie Fletcher; and five brothers, Roscoe, Hufford, George, Ellis and Dorsey McClanahan. Among survivors are two sons-in-law, Robert James Hutchinson and Roger Allen Hutchinson, both of Grundy; two daughters-in-law, Clara Elswick and Naomi Elswick, both of Grundy; three granddaughters, Billie Jean Warton of Elm City, N.C., Valerie Massengill of Bristol Virginia and Jennifer Hutchinson of Grundy; seven grandsons, Michael Case and John Allen Hutchinson, both of Grundy, Mark Case of Wolford, Va., James Neal Clevinger of Harman, Va., Robert John Hutchinson of Kingsport, Dwayne Elswick of Christiansburg, Va., and Victor Elswick of Alexandria, Va.; and five great-grandchildren, Christian McCrae Case, Cassidy Renee Case, Christina Marie Clevinger, Chastity Lynn Clevinger and Zachary Massengill. Pallbearers will be Michael Case, Mark Case, James Neal Clevinger, Dwayne Elswick, Robert John Hutchinson, Victor Elswick and John Allen Hutchinson. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Larry G. Mitche, Dr. M.J. Thakkar, staff of the ICU Unit at Buchanan General Hospital and members of Home Creek Old Regular Baptist Church.
